Quik I think that supposes games end the 4Q tied due to some sort of deficiency on the part of the teams playing. I think you could conversely say that due to the skill required to achieve the tie that both teams deserve a chance to display that skill in the OT.

All this can simply be avoided if people would stop using "we", "us", "your", "my" in refering to sports teams, unless you work for them. That is so immature and moronic. If you like one team, that's great. Or if you like multiple teams, that's cool too. Same thing if you hate one or more teams. Just refer to them in the third person like we do with anything else we do not personally possess. |

Just my opinion....if a game goes to OT, the entire quarter should be played no matter what. Like having a 2nd fourth quarter. Regular season, game ends in a tie, playoffs if still tied, just move onto the next quarter.

A lot of what the NFL (and other sports leagues) are about is putting the best and most popular products on the field to ensure maximum revenues. I think minimizing the chance of injuries to the best and most popular products plays into sudden death or shootout overtimes, and probably lack of college playoffs, to some extent. |

Eh...when I say it, it's usually just because it's easier to say "we couldn't move the ball for shit" than "the 49ers..." constantly. I'm lazy, not immature or moronic. |

But I don't grant the premise that is always true or that it was true in this case. As much as I've seen people say that San Diego outplayed Indianapolis, the fact is that the Chargers were in overtime because they made plenty of mistakes too. By this logic, why bother playing overtime at all? Why not just flip the coin to choose the winner? I really don't see the harm in ensuring at a minimum that both teams get a possession in OT. What is the harm in doing something that makes more sense? |

You probably are right that it is immature. Rooting for the teams that I have since I was a child probably is pretty childish in its own right though. I have not staked anything in the team, so shouldn't derive any pleasure from their success or disappointment from their failure, yet I still do. I probably could be far more mature and productive by focusing only on the sports I do play (now limited pretty much to just bowling, tennis and an "over-the-hill" softball league), but the child in me still longs to see "my" teams win and do well. So I can easily see others that have the same passion for "their" teams in whichever sport it may be. I just get confused when people talk about 2, 3 , 4 or more teams as "theirs" as I then don't necessarily find where the passion is coming from or at least don't understand it or can not relate. My original post was meant more to be fun then any kind of attack and I don't think I agree with your taking it to the next level. I do think you are correct in what you say, but I am not a completely logical being without feeling, so sometimes I do likely do things that are immature I suppose (such as derive far too much pleasure in "my" team from childhood). |

The Colts have become my favorite team over the past 5 years or so. I've never really regained my feelings for the Dolphins after the Jimmy Johnson/Dave Wannstedt/Saban/Cameron debacles. My rooting interests have been swayed heavily toward the Colts over that period. I was happy to see the Dolphins do better this year, but I doubt I could name 10 players on the current roster. It doesn't help that I have a real dislike for Bill Parcells. Usually, if the Colts and the Dolphins were on at the same time, I was watching the Colts. |

Honestly, giving a shit about the fortunes of a team of millionaires from your city of choice is pretty irrational in itself. But obviously, people do feel something about their teams for whatever reason. At the end of the day, it is entertainment. It gives you a chance to see "good vs. evil" played out in an entertaining manner. Life is more interesting with sports than without them, even if they don't really matter in any way aside from affecting the economy of the cities they are located in.

The thing that I probably reaction against in the team personalization is the flip side - the depression, anger, upset, etc. of when your personal team loses. I see that in my young son and to me, it is not healthy and both my wife and I are trying to teach him to be more even keel. Such immature behavior extends to adult and I have personally witnessed spousal abuse, anger and temper tantrums to others, substance abuse and poor work performance after a painful loss (and to some extent, internet rages) and that's where it becomes moronic. That's not worth it, imo. I also think destructive celebrations after a big win is moronic too, imo. Being lazy? That's cool though.
I think that the many fans that are in fantasy leagues help a lot. They end up not seeing things (teams, players, leagues) in so extreme or black&white manner. There are a lot of good performances and games being played, regardless of the emotions tied to the uniform. |

Nice goal-line stand there. Announcers seem to be fellating the Ravens, which is irritating me a little.

People trying to kill my joy in this thread.
Immature or not, "my" Miami Dolphins are in the playoffs after a 1-15 year and I'm jacked. I hope "we" can figure out how to stop the Ravens O.

I use to take everything personal when it comes to Florida State but now I don't because I learned that no matter what happens the sun will rise tomorrow. Now when Florida State loses I just laugh and go read the message boards because to me I learned to find entertainment in our losses.

Flacco is apparently untouchable in this game. Dolphins aren't doing a good job putting pressure on him.

That being said, as a person pulling for the Ravens (financial reasons only) I am uncomfortable every time he drops back to pass. He's starting to force some passes and I wouldn't be shocked to see a pick real soon.

Ravens are leaving htese outside routes open. I hope Pennington keeps an eye on Ed Reed when he throws those.

Yeah, if they were gonna do that, then they should have had him throw. Everyone on Miami keyed on him the second they saw him.

MVP play from Pennington today eh?
Just messing around guys, don't take it personal. I like the guy, though I think I lean towards the Ravens since I have never liked Miami much at all.

I honestly feel like we're lucky to only be down 13-3 at the half. Baltimore's just been stifling as hell on D.

This is getting fucking ridiculous. Pennington throws another pick and then the Ravens ST comes up with a second assfucking downed punt near the goal line.
I'm tempted to say they should just say fuck it and throw Henne in there.
