Yup. They are, unless of course you cut a guy and want to re-sign him later on and can't. I'm VERY glad to hear that this has been toned down!

EDIT: Typo.

Sorry - a combination of real life and other beta testing has pulled me away from the diary... but I hope to have another one written today.

I'm sorry Quiksand, but you need to get your priorities straight. Putting your real life ahead of my entertainment just isn't acceptable.

There is a link for new diary entry (entitled opening up the engines), but when I click on it, it pulls up the last entry from the 25th. Just thought I'd let you know, in case you didn't already. Hope to see the actual new entry soon.

After reading that latest entry, I'm getting attached to the Cleveland Maroons too a little, but mostly it is really getting my juices flowing to start playing again. I hope it comes out soon as I just can't get myself to play FOF4 again right now, knowing that the new game will be out soon.

The diary is definitely getting me excited to play the new game. I really hope with the electronic distribution settled Jim will be able to release the game as soon as it's finished the beta testing.

This is just what I did over the weekend. Simply couldn't wait, I started a career and I'm trying not to get attached to my players too much, this is tough

Nice job, Quik. Although it might be more accurately titled a beta player's diary than a beta tester's.

I keep waiting for the detailed entry where you discuss cutting all of your players and signing nothing but punters just to see what happens.

Well, Jim mentioned this somewhere (maybe a page or so back in this thread....not sure), but Quik is actually running two instances of the game, having to un-install and re-install different beta builds to test as opposed to play the diary career. As he mentioned in this entry, he's moving forward to a newer build with the next.

In other words, it sounds like Quik is going through a royal pain in order to get the diary to us.

I don't doubt that Quik is doing an excellent job testing the game. I'm poking fun at the fact that the diary is a play diary, and not a test diary. I didn't expect that I'd have to explain that.

yep...and half my staff is off today for some reason. Never quite figured out how that happens. 3 weeks and no one takes a day off and then on a Thursday 9 people decide not to show up.

I believe the final diary entry has been posted. Sort of a wrap up and reflection on the whole process, with a little detail on some of the larger changes that have taken place during the beta process.

Here's the general link again: Beta Diary

Another area of the game that has gotten even more work (but will be less outwardly visible) is the AI mechanisms for teams filling out their rosters. It's a source of frustration that just about any gamer can keep looking and looking until he gets close enough to find something that doesn't make sense. Sometimes, the criticism follows an "impossible" result like a team winning despite completing only two passes or a team handing the ball off 51 times to their top running back. Other times, it's that one of the computer-run teams made a roster decision that someone doesn't think was in the team's best interests.

In terms of signing free agents, pursuing rookie players, and completing the roster for the season, this game has made some real strides forward. I have no doubts at all that there will still be hiccups, and that there will be things to criticize. I'm a non- programmer myself, but even I can understand that there are limits to how layered these things can really get in a game like this. But, there has been no shortage of effort and dedication from Jim to tackle this, even at the very minute level. One thing that I am very impressed with (and will be a real help to the gamers) is that the general screen showing each team's "top need positions" does a rather solid job of accurately portraying the team's immediate needs. I checked this out pretty well when testing, and eventually got to where I felt I could really count on it to see what each team really needed at that stage. Having reliable shortcuts like this makes the game a lot easier to navigate, I think.
This section has me salivating.

What Skydog said.

Excellent news. My interest in this release has just taken a big jump forwards. Looking forward to hearing how the new game will play out. Sounds like it could be much more challenging to win.

I don't think it has, either, and I was wondering the same thing, only because QS' latest diary indicated that he was the only one without technical programming knowledge.

From the diary:
One reader has remarked that the diary has read more like a "beta player diary" than a "beta tester diary" because of this approach.

Nothing but warm feelings for you, Quik...you did a great job with the diary. I tease because I love.

(The rookie signing process is also a little more intriguing on this account - it's possible to have rookies hold out and miss training camp, which lessens your ability to know quite where you are at that position as they remain unsigned - a good systematic addition, I think).

Another awesome element that was missed in v4.

Thanks! again QS, excellent reading material. Oh, and I went from 'waiting on impressions' to 'my amx card is sitting next to the pc' just by your writings and Jim's envolvement back into the community. Seems like FOFC is alive again, and that's a great thing!

I wonder how these play out in an online league (like rookie holdouts)? I am still interested in playing this more for multiplayer than solo but it does sound like there is a lot there for many here.
