Souray had a few giveaways, no? I guess it counts as a giveaway when you leave the puck behind to smash someone into the glass!

Eric Lindros, Marty Turco, Patrick Wellar and Adrian Aucoin have refused to join Team Canada at the World Championships.

Derian Hatcher, Bryan Berard, Tom Poti, John Leclair, Mike Modano, Jeremy Roenick and Mark Parrish have refused to join Team USA at the World Championships.

Interestingly, none of the European teams have any refusals from NHL players who are out of the playoffs.

Game 1: Calgary @ Colorado
Joe Sakic, Teemu Selanne and Steve Konwalchuk are out for Colorado. None of them will be available for this series. Toni Lydman, Jordan Leopold and Joel Lundqvist are out for us. Lydman won't be available at all. Kiprusoff will clearly start. I place Regehr and Warener on the top defensive pairing. Souray is taken away from penalty killing, 4-on-4 even strength and is #3 on defence. My number two line is Lombardi-Bell-Kobasew but I'm worried it's a young line with not much defensive awareness. Both Gelinas and Simon are experienced left wingers, have good morale and Simon's skating and conditioning has improved to the point where I won't hesitate to move him up if I have to. We still need to play a defensive game to have any chance.

We lose 3-1 despite outshooting Colorado 28-21 (GWG: Donald Brashear). Our only goal comes on the powerplay by Iginla. Tanguay-Forsberg-Hejduk were a non-factor but the supporting players like Vyborny and Brashear showed up. Tanguay's goal was an empty netter. Kobasew and Ruutu got a '6' rating. My fear of the "Kid Line" was correct. They were on for all three goals against. I'm going to break them up.

* David Vyborny (1g, 1a, '8')
** Tommy Salo (27 saves, '8')
*** Alex Tanguay (1g, '8')

Game 2: Calgary @ Colorado
Kipper starts. Regehr is only at 83% and seems to get banged up every game. Chris Clark comes in for Ruutu. Gelinas moves up to take Lombardi's spot on the second line. Lombardi drops to the fourth line but still sees action on the second powerplay unit with Bell and Kobasew. Simon takes a shift on the third line.

We lose 4-2 (GWG: David Vyborny) and were outshot 32-20. Vyborny gets a hattrick. No one gets a '6' rating for us, but out top two lines were victimized for all of the goals. Souray gets banged up and drops to (65%). Gelinas and Clark get the goals for us. Gelinas is definitely a big-game performer.

* David Vyborny (3g, '10')
** Adam Foote (1g, '8')
*** Alex Tanguay (2a, '8')

Game 3: Colorado @ Calgary
Kipper starts. Souray is only at 74% so I take him out and put in Lynch. No changes to the forward lines. My top guys are all in so there are no excuses.

We win 4-2 (GWG: Jarome Iginla). We killed off five penalties but were only 1/8 on the powerplay. Souray was inserted into the lineup against my will but managed an '8' rating. All four lines got in on a goal.

* Chris Clark (1g, '8')
** Bryan Smolinski (1g, '8')
*** Brad Richards (1g, '8')

Game 4: Colorado @ Calgary
Kipper starts. I put Souray back in. No change to the forward lines.

We lose 3-1 (GWG: Alex Tanguay). Again, no one on our team played poorly - no '6' ratings and several 8s - but it was the Peter Forsberg show tonight. Regehr is banged up again (65%).

* Peter Forsberg (1g, 2a, '9')
** Milan Hejduk (1g, 1a, '8')
*** David Aebischer (26 saves, '9')

Game 5: Calgary @ Colorado
Kipper is only at 86% but I go with him. His performance has been great. Regehr is only at 74% but he stays in. I reduce his workload however. I'm going to go down with my best guys in. No change up front.

We lose 4-2 (GWG: David Vyborny). We outshoot Colorado 33-21 but go 0/8 on the powerplay. Leopold or Lydman would have helped there but Souray should be the one with the rifle on the point. Gelinas, Clark, Nilson and Ference all get 6 ratings.

* David Vyborny (2g, '9')
** Milan Hejduk (1g, '8')
*** Alex Tanguary (1a, '8')

Colorado defeats Calgary, 4 games to 1.

Not entirely unexpected considering how we struggled to make the post-season. Definitely some changes need to be made this off-season. I think I'm overrating my defence.

Interesting observation IMO -- from reading the dynasty, I've somehow gotten the impression that you have always considered your defensemen to be your biggest problem area.

I expected a lot more out of Leopold and Regehr this year. I see it as a weakness but when I said "overrating" I meant as #1 or #2 defencemen. When Lydman played as a #5 for most of the year, he put up great numbers. So, I'm overrating each defenceman's spot on the depth chart.

The same holds true with Souray. Since Regehr, Leopold and Lydman at the time weren't cutting it, I made the trade for Souray. He immediately became my #1. Now, it's clear he also isn't cut out for that and is probably at best a #3.

Also, without a true #1 defenceman, my powerplay hasn't been good for two seasons now. I'm hoping my second round pick from last year can develop into a mobile offensive defenceman but he's far away. Phaneuf is a stud but he's more in the mold of Warener, not an offensive playmaker.

The Board is "generally satisfied" with my performance. Clearly more than a first-round exit was expected. Many of the players also feel the team has more potential than it is showing.

World Championships Quarter-Finals
Germany 1 vs. Canada 5
USA 4 vs. Czech Republic 1
Norway 4 vs. Sweden 5 (in a shootout)
Finland 4 vs. Switzerland 3 (in a shootout)

I'm about to lose exclusive rights to a few prospects so I offer contracts to F Cam Cunning (19), D Dion Phaneuf (20) and F Nick Taransky (20). I decide not to give an offer to F Thomas Bellmare (21) - Darryl Sutter's 7th Round Pick in 2003. My scouts say he'll never make it and he's struggled in the Q. He's a goon who can't skate so I'm not going to waste money on him. Each player receiving a contract is delighted to agree to terms.

I give Martin Brodeur my vote for the Vezina Trophy.

NY Rangers trade the rights to D Chris McAllister (29) to Detroit for the rights to D Dominic Granak (20).

Pittsburgh Penguins have won the NHL Entry Draft Lottery. The NHL Entry Draft will be held at the HP Pavilion in San Jose.

It's interesting to me that former NHLer Pat Conacher got a job coaching the NJ Devils and then won the Jack Adams trophy!

From the hundreds of players returned to my scouts, I've narrowed it down to the following list. I won't mention guys I won't have a shot at; I don't have a pick until the third round. The score listed is the score generated by my Excel spreadsheet. I really don't want to take overagers but I may have no choice.

LD Daniel Ljungqvist (24) - 31.01
RD/LD Janne Niskala (24) - 26.68
RW Deny Bartschi (23) - 25.06
RD David Jobin (24) - 19.61
RW/LW Jack Skille (18) - 19.36
LD Beat Gerber (23) - 19.19
C Tyler Spurgeon (19) - 14.50
C/RW Brett Sutter (18) - 13.93
RD/LD Chris Zarb (20) - 13.56
C Colin Stone (19) - 9.77
RW/LW J.D. Watt (18) - 6.25
LW/C/RW Mathias Trygg (19) - 4.10
RW Jonas Westerling (23) - 1.96
C Cory Vitarelli (20) - -0.80*
LW Niko Maaninka (19) - -2.41
C Niklas Lihagen (22) - -4.16
C/RW Austin Sutter (20) - -6.06*
G Martin Barek (23) - -6.80
RW/LW Ashton Rome (20) - -7.50*
C/LW Dale Mahovsky (20) - -12.18*
LW Jordan McLean (18) - -13.64
RW/LW Mike O'Dwyer (18) - -13.84
LW/RW Moises Gutierrez (19) - -14.11
LW Ivo Ruthemann (28) - -17.70**

*These players are 20 years old or more and will be able to be signed as free agents if undrafted. It would be foolish to waste a draft pick on any of these guys as none of them are highly rated and should easily slip through the draft.

**This is the German star I mentioned earlier. He has 20s in speed, acceleration, agility, teamwork and wristshot, 19 in faceoffs and determination, and 18 in positioning. He ripped up the World Championships last year which is where I first noticed him in a media report - my scouts never reported on this guy. When I sent my scouts over to look at him, they each said he'd be a very good signing. Europeans need to be drafted in order to sign in North America so he will be my last pick in the draft; a similar strategy was used last draft to select Marco Buhrer. Ruthemann reminds me a lot of Samsonov. I see that he is also on St. Louis' shortlist but I would be shocked beyond belief if he is selected before me. In last year's draft, the AI teams did not select anyone over the age of 21.

Phoenix trades F Jakub Koreis (20) to Chicago for D Kristian Kudroc (24) and a 7th Round Pick in 2005.

Calgary Flames trade D Brennan Evans (22) to Pittsburgh for a 5th Round Pick in 2005.

San Jose trades F Nils Ekman (28) to Colorado for F Riku Hahl (24).

The 2005 NHL Entry Draft from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California is about to begin!

The first overall selection belongs to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Round 1

1(1) - Pittsburgh selects

C Sidney Crosby (18) - 6'0, 224 lbs. - Rimouski Oceanic, Canada (ISS Ranking: #1)
Crosby is the consensus number one pick. The comparisons to Gretzky are probably unfair but there is no doubt that Pittsburgh has a legitimate superstar to anchor its team for many years to come. In 66 games with Rimouski this year, Crosby scored 70 goals and 141 points on his way to being named the QMJHL's Offensive Player of the Year. He is a fluid skater with an exceptional work ethic. He has a drive to win and will elevate the game of those around him. His offensive flair is unquestionable but his defensive game is only average. He is also of only average strength but is still exceptionally difficult to knock off the puck. Physical conditioning will be required to take his game up a level in the pros. There isn't much for him left to prove in Junior so expect to see him to be in the NHL as an 18 year old and immediately the favourite to win the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year. Player Projection High/Low: Steve Yzerman/Doug Gilmour

1(2) - San Jose selects

C/LW Andrew Cogliano (18) - 5'11", 200 lbs. - Toronto St. Michael's Majors, Canada (ISS Ranking: #2)
The drop off from number one to number two overall is substantial. Despite putting up 95 points in 68 games in the OHL, Cogliano lacks the physical development or mental attributes of Crosby. He is an average skater and prefers to dangle using his skill rather than head into the corners for loose pucks. He is exceptional one-on-one and has a heavy slapshot. There is no question that Cogliano has elite level skill; the question is whether he has the mind to go with it. He definitely needs some maturing to do before playing for San Jose. It would be a mistake to rush him. Player Comparison High/Low: Pavel Datsyuk/Marcel Hossa

1(3) - Chicago selects

LD Carl Gunnarsson (18) - 6'4, 233 lbs. - Lulea HF, Sweden (ISS Ranking: #6)
Gunnarsson is the best defensive defenceman in this year's draft. He represented Sweden at the World Junior Championships. His defensive game is exceptional but most of that is due to being in the right position at the right time, reading the plays well and anticipating what will happen on the ice. Despite his size, he is not strong enough to clear guys in front of the net; he'll need to work on that before heading to the NHL. Offensively, he won't hurt you but don't expect him to quarterback the powerplay. He is in exceptional physical condition brought about by his maturity and professional approach which is probably why he succeeded in playing in the Swedish Elite League as an 18 year old. His one major drawback is his speed - he is slow as molasses. He will get beat wide by speedy wingers unless he improves his skating or learns to compensate for the speed of the NHL game. Player Comparison High/Low: Richard Matvichuk/Marcus Ragnarsson

1(4) - Detroit selects

C Daniel Ryder (18) - 6'0, 191 lbs. - Belleville Bulls, Canada (ISS Ranking: #3)
Imagine Cogliano, just not as good. Ryder is small and can't skate very well. He also lacks motivation, relying on his skill to get him to this point in his career. Perhaps this will change but it is unlikely. He is technically sound with the puck, being more of a set up man than a goalscorer; he scored 65 points in 67 games in the OHL. Definsively, he has a lot to learn. He may become a piece of a puzzle but he'll never be the guy to take the team to the promised land. Player Comparison High/Low: Mike Comrie/non-NHL

1(5) - Carolina selects

LW Mika Halava (18) - 5'10, 154 lbs. - Porin Assat Jrs., Finland (ISS Ranking: #5)
This is a selection based on statistics rather than what you see on the ice. Halava is small, a very slow skater, doesn't impress you at all and then when you look at the scoresheet you realized he had three assists. He played for Finland at the World Junior Championships. The debate is whether he can continue that trend in higher competition because his point totals were accumulated in a junior Finnish league but he did rack up six points in seven games at the junior tournament against his peers. Unless he physically matures - his lack of strength makes him easy to knock off the puck - his skill level will have to improve dramatically if he is to succeed in a professional hockey career. Slow, small guys are just not prototypical NHL players. Player Comparison High/Low: Tyler Arnason/non-NHL

1(6) - Nashville selects

LD Matt Lashoff (18) - 6'2", 213 lbs. - Kitchener Rangers, Canada (ISS Ranking: #4)
Lashoff is the best offensive defenceman in this year's draft and represented the United States at the World Junior Championships. His skill level is very high although he tends to make the safe play rather than try something outlandish. He is good at head manning the puck out of the offensive zone but can just as easily spring a forward with a long pass. He is perfect for the powerplay with his vision and his shot. Both his slapshots and wristshots usually hit the net. Lashoff still needs to work on his defensive game to go to the next level but he hasn't been hurt by it so far. You don't want to overwork this guy however, as that could sap all of his creative energy and leave him prone to defensive mistakes. Player Comparison High/Low: Jordan Leopold/Nathan Dempsey

1(7) - Edmonton selects

LD Risto Korhonen (18) - 6'3", 218 lbs. - Oulun Karpat Jrs., Finland (ISS Ranking: #22)
Korhonen is an offensive defenceman who represented Finland at the World Junior Championships. He is technically gifted and may be one of the best pure passers in the draft. Contrarily, he may be the worst skater in the draft. He relies on his smarts and positioning in his own zone rather than strength. He gets knocked off the puck easily so he compensates by dishing it off quickly - he doesn't have the speed, acceleration or agility to rush the puck. The only thing holding this guy back are his physical tools. Everything else is there. Player Comparison High/Low: - Don Sweeny/non-NHL

1(8) - Columbus selects

RW Bobby Ryan (18) - 6'2", 233 lbs. - Erie Otters, Canada (ISS Ranking: #7)
Ryan is a huge winger from the United States, who represented his country at the World Junior Championships. He scored 35 goals and 77 points in 60 games in the OHL. He has a very good slapshot and wristshot but is just as comfortable setting up teammates. This guy loves to hit but picks his spots; he won't be taking stupid penalties. Ryan isn't afraid to dig in the corners or stand in front of the net but some have questioned his desire, especially when his team gets down by a few goals. His skating is average so there is definitely room their for improvement but don't be surprised to see this power forward playing for Columbus in the near future. Player Comparison High/Low: - Bill Guerin/Brad Isbister

1(9) - Dallas selects

RW Michael Blunden (18) - 6'4", 218 lbs. - Erie Otters, Canada (ISS Ranking: #9)
Blunden has all the tools. Now the question is whether he can stay healthy to put it all together. A concussion cost him part of the season this year, just as he was hitting his stride. As a result, he only racked up 36 points in 52 games in the OHL. He is a good skater, strong, has a good shot, is a good passer, is responsible defensively, likes to hit, doesn't mind getting in the corners - everything you want. If he stays healthy, he is definitely an asset. He needs some luck. Player Comparison High/Low: - Brendan Morrow/Brett Lindros

1(10) - New York Rangers select

RW/LW Gilbert Brule (18) - 6'1", 176 lbs. - Spokane Chiefs, Canada (ISS Ranking: #16)
Brule is an offensive winger from Canada who represented his country at the World Junior Championships. He scored 35 goals and 67 points in 51 games in the WHL. He has an offensive flair that is second to only Crosby in this draft, with a dynamite wrist shot. He is an above average skater and only fair defensively so both those areas need some work. He is close to being NHL ready but it would be nice to see this guy spend another year in junior followed by a year in the minors. Player Comparison High/Low: Alex Tanguay/Simon Gagne

1(11) - Philadelphia selects

LW/C Brock Bradford (18) - 6'0, 185 lbs. - Kamloops Blazers, Canada (ISS Ranking: #18)
Bradford scored 72 points in 70 games in his first year in the WHL. Bradford has very good speed but is more of a playmaker than a goal scorer. There are no glaring weaknesses in his game but he tends to be a bit selfish and hold onto the puck too long. He definitely needs a few years of seasoning to improve in all areas before making the jump to the NHL. Rushing him could destroy his career. Player Comparison High/Low: Steve Reinprecht/Dean McAmmond

1(12) - Boston selects

RW Steve Downie (18) - 6'0", 183 lbs. - Windsor Spitfires, Canada (ISS Ranking: #25)
Downie is a stick-handling winger who likes to set up teammates for goals although he possesses a good enough shot that notched him 29 goals in the OHL this past season. He is average defensively but below average in skating and his committment to the game is lacking; when Windsor struggled, he showed little desire to elevate his game or the team. He can be selfish at times, not only in holding the puck too long but also in taking needless penalties. Downie is rough around the edges and needs some work. Player Comparison High/Low: Esa Tikkanen/Ville Nieminen

1(13) - Ottawa selects

RW Michael Lombardi (18) - 6'1", 220 lbs. - Belleville Bulls, Canada (ISS Ranking: #26)
Lombardi likes to hit and score goals but his passing ability isn't that far off from his shot. He is good defensively but a below average skater. Although he has good size, he doesn't always put it to use and at times it is possible to intimidate him. He has to show more of a committment to the game if he wants to succeed at the next level. Player Comparison High/Low: Brad Isbister/non-NHL

1(14) - New York Islanders select

C Dan Bertram (18) - 6'0", 218 lbs. - Medicine Hat Tigers, Canada (ISS Ranking: #17)Bertram was rookie of the year in the WHL this past season, putting up 88 points in 70 games. He is very strong and well conditioned and uses this to his advantage along the wall. He is a good skater and has a flair and touch with the puck that you wouldn't expect and is a better passer than shooter. He gets lost in his own zone so he'll need to work on all defensive aspects of his game or he will be a liability. He just turned 18 so he has time to work on his game. Player Comparison High/Low: Olli Jokinen/Jason Weimer

1(15) - Minnesota selects

LD Patrick McNeil (18) - 6'0, 178 lbs. - Saginaw Spirit, Canada (ISS Ranking: #15)
McNeil is an offensive defenceman who put up 46 points in 68 games in the OHL. He isn't a very good skater and lacks size. He has a good shot but is a better stickhandler. Despite his small stature, he loves to hit but he doesn't do it enough. In fact, he doesn't do anything enough and you sometimes wonder if he enjoy's hockey when he takes a night off. He really should be a forward because he doesn't have the defensive awareness to be a steady defenceman. Player Comparsion High/Low: Patrice Brisebois/non-NHL

1(16) - Carolina selects

C Chris Lawrence (18) - 6'4", 176 lbs. - Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, Canada (ISS Ranking: #24)
Lawrence has good offensive skills and is liked by his teammates but other than that, his game is raw. He needs to put on muscle and dramatically improve his skating. He hasn't shown a willingness to work consistently and is very much a perimeter player. He simply doesn't like to get hit and if he does, will usually disappear the rest of the game. His stats aren't that impressive either, scoring only 26 points in 52 games in the OHL this past season. Lawrence is a gamble. Player Comparison High/Low: Nik Antropov/non-NHL

1(17) - Phoenix selects

LW Mike Roelofsen (18) - 6'0", 196 lbs. - Belleville Bulls, Canada (ISS Ranking: #13)
A very good slapshot and wristshot are Roelofsen's best assets. The rest of his game is average at best. He needs work in all areas, especially defensively. He won't be able to rely on his shot in the pros. He lacks the desire you would like to see from a guy with his talent. Player Comparison High/Low: Brett Hull/non-NHL

1(18) - San Jose selects

C Sean O'Connor (18) - 6'0", 178 lbs. - Erie Otters, Canada (ISS Ranking: #12)
O'Connor played for the United States at the World Junior Championships. He is an average skater but strong for his size. He's a good stickhandler and has a good wristshot. He likes to hit and doesn't mind defensive responsiblity but he needs tutoring in that area. You'd like to see him work harder but he takes nights off; consistency is a big problem. He only scored 29 points in 57 games in the OHL this past season. Player Comparison High/Low: Chris Gratton/non-NHL

1(19) - Tampa Bay selects

C Chris Durand (18) - 6'2", 178 lbs. - Seattle Thunderbirds, USA (ISS Ranking: #32)
Durand scored 51 points in 66 games in the WHL. He has some offensive upside but is good defensively. His major weakness is his skating which needs to be improved. He doesn't mind hitting but hates receiving and can be intimidated into quiet games. Player Comparison High/Low: Alyn McCauley/non-NHL

1(20) - Toronto selects

RD Phil Oreskovic (18) - 6'4", 218 lbs. - Kitchener Rangers, Canada (ISS Ranking: #67)
Went much higher than ranked. Oreskovic is a stay at home defenceman. He suffered a torn ACL which has put him out of action for 6 months. He isn't a very good skater and for his size you would think he would show more strength but smaller players can muscle him off-balance. He has a good slapshot from the point and is a good stickhandler. He likes to hit but needs to work on his defensive positioning. In fact, he needs to show a greater willingness to work if he ever wants to play in the ACC. Player Comparison High/Low: Cory Cross/non-NHL

1(21) - Florida selects

RD Kyle Lamb (18) - 5'11", 211 lbs. - Sudbury Wolves, Canada (ISS Ranking: #21)
Lamb relies heavily on hit shot and passing, racking up 36 points in 55 games in the OHL. He is a below average skater and isn't particularly strong on the puck. A bit of a show boat with the puck, he needs to improve his work ethic to be an effective team player. As with most young defensemen, he will also need some time developing greater defensive awareness. Player Comparison High/Low: John-Michael Liles/non-NHL

1(22) - Atlanta selects

LD Marc Staal (18) - 6'5", 213 lbs. - Windsor Spitfires, Canada (ISS Ranking: #34)
A towering offensive defenceman, Staal still needs to fill out and projects to probably play at 225 lbs. For now, his offensive skills are above average; he accumulated 31 points in 64 games. He really needs to work on his skating and show more consistency if he's going to be a player at the next level. Player Comparison High/Low: Martin Skoula/non-NHL

1(23) - Carolina selects

C Tuomas Huhtanen (18) - 6'1", 213 lbs. - Porin Assat Jrs., Finland (ISS Ranking: #19)
Huhtanen played for his country at the World Junior Championships. He hasn't shown much offensive flair, scoring only three goals in 53 games in the junior Finnish league. He seems willing to commit to a defensive game but will need to substantially improve in all areas if he's ever going to get a chance at the NHL level. Player Comparison High/Low: Artem Chubarov/non-NHL

1(24) - St. Louis selects

LW Guillaume Latendresse (18) - 6'3", 216 lbs. - Drummondville Voltigeurs, Canada (ISS Ranking: #12)
A strong and physically capable offensive winger, Latendresse scored 76 points in 67 games in the QMJHL. He's an all round player who is willing to work hard. He plays a team game and it wouldn't shock anyone to see him eventually be a captain in the NHL. He won't make an immediate impact and needs to work on his skating before ever getting a chance to play regularly. Latendresse was voted the Fans Player of the Year for Drummondville this past season. Player Comparison High/Low: Trevor Linden/Jarkko Ruutu

1(25) - Montreal selects

LD/RD Andrei Zubarev (18) - 6'0", 198 lbs. - Salavat Yulajev Ufa, Russia (ISS Ranking: #10)
Zubarev is a defensive defenceman who shows a lot of awareness in his own end at a young age. He is strong and a good skater with enough technical skills to cope although he won't impress anyone with offensive numbers. He can be intimidated by bigger players on the forecheck, especially considering his tendancy to hold onto the puck too long trying to deke past opponents rather than make the safe play off the boards. This past season he made Team Russia at the World Junior Championships. Player Comparison High/Low: Brian Raflaski/non-NHL

1(26) - Washington selects

RW Jussi Peltomaa (18) - 6'2", 218 lbs. - Porin Assat Jrs., Finland (ISS Ranking: #8)Peltomaa scored five goals in seven games for his country at the World Junior Championships. He shows offensive capability but his main asset is his ability to get into scoring position. He shows a willingness to play defensively but will have to improve on his skating. He also must definitely play bigger; he rarely uses his physical strength at 218 lbs., one would expect more in that department, especially if he continues to grow. Player Comparison High/Low: Yannic Perreault/non-NHL

1(27) - Colorado selects

RW/LW Devin Setoguchi (18) - 6'1", 205 lbs. - Saskatoon Blades, Canada (ISS Ranking: #14)
Setoguchi is a very fast winger who can blow by you just as easily as outmuscling you. He has offensive flair but also likes to hit people in the open ice. He shows an understanding of the defensive came but needs to be more committed to it. He has an edge to his game and will probably be around the 100 minute mark in penalties; he's an agitator that you won't like to play against. His skills need some seasoning but he should be a solid player. Player Comparison High/Low: Mike Peca/Kurt Maltby

1(28) - Anaheim selects

C Ryan O'Marra (18) - 6'2", 224 lbs. - Plymouth Whalers, USA (ISS Ranking: #27)
A big center who is good, but not great, at all aspects of the game. Nothing really impresses you about O'Marra. He's a meat and potatoes type guy who'll show up most nights. He good develop into a solid NHLer or be on the outside looking in. Player Comparison High/Low: Craig Conroy/non-NHL

1(29) - New Jersey selects

LW Oscar Sundh (18) - 6'4", 216 lbs. - Almtuna IS, Sweden (ISS Ranking: #23)
Sundh is a huge winger with good speed and a great wristshot to go along with offensive awareness. He has all the skills and has no fear going into high traffic areas. If there is a drawback to his game is that he is selfish with the puck and doesn't use his teammates effectively. He's had one concussion in the past year which could be a cause for concern. Sundh represented Sweden at the World Junior Championships. Player Comparsion High/Low: Fredrik Modin/Marcus Nilson

1(30) - Vancouver selects

C Mattias Ritola (18) - 5'11", 198 lbs. - Vastra Frolunda HC, Sweden (ISS Ranking: Unranked)
A small offensive center who represented his country at the World Junior Championships. He's on the big squad Frolunda, at the Swedish Elite League level, but hasn't seem much action over the past two years and you'd like to see him play more regularly to enhance his development. Ritola is an exceptionally well conditioned athlete and has great speed. He loves to challenge one-on-one and often uses the defenceman for a screen for his good wristshot. However, you'd like to see him use his teammates more. One wonders how committed Ritola is to making the NHL, prefering the less physical European game; he avoids high traffic areas at all costs. Player Comparison High/Low: Sami Kapanen/non-NHL

Round 2

2(31) - Pittsburgh selects G Carey Price (18) - 6'4", 213 lbs. - Tri-City Americans, USA (ISS Ranking: #30)
The first goalie selected.

2(37) - Edmonton selects LW Cal O'Reilly (18) - 6'0", 174 lbs. - Mississauga Ice Dogs, Canada (ISS Ranking: #38)
Good conditioning and determination, average all round skills, below average speed.

2(38) - NY Rangers select RW/LW Jack Skille (18) - 5'11", 183 lbs. - Toronto St. Michael's Majors, Canada (ISS Ranking: #46)
I was hoping Skille might be available for me in the third round. Double digit attributes in all but two categories - balance and aggression. Racked up 60 points in 56 games in the OHL. Played for the USA at the World Junior Championships.

2(38) - Dallas selects G Joonas Hallikainen (18) - 5'10", 207 lbs. - Helsingen Jokerit Jrs., Finland (ISS Ranking: #47)
Played for Finland at the World Junior Championships. Dominated his domestic junior league.

2(43) - Dallas selects RW Mark Lytwyn (18) - 6'0", 218 lbs. - Owen Sound Attack, Canada (ISS Ranking: #52)
Hasn't played regularly in the OHL but when he has, he's on a point a game pace. Good technical skills but the physical and mental game is lacking.

2(45) - Dallas selects RD/LD Mike Stuart (18) - 6'5", 222 lbs. - US National Development Team, USA (ISS Ranking: #66)
Played for the US in the World Junior Championships. This guy looks like a stud and I can't believe he's ranked so low. What's more worrying to me is that I somehow overlooked this guy and he wasn't on my list - an oversight by me or my scouts.

2(49) - Tampa Bay selects C Cory Vitarelli (20) - 5'10, 205 lbs. - Toronto St. Michael's Majors, Canada (ISS Ranking: Unranked)
The first player drafted who wasn't 18. I don't remember anyone selecting a 20 year old this early in last year's draft. This was one of the guys who I thought might slip through undrafted and I'd be able to pick him up as a free agent. Now I have to rethink my draft strategy. There are so many other players I would have selected before Vitarelli; I'm shocked this undrafted player went so early although the fact he's on my list and has already been drafted is a good indication that maybe the AI is pretty darn good.

2(55) - Edmonton selects C Peter Franchin (19) - 6'4", 194 lbs. - Kitchener Rangers, Canada (ISS Ranking: #29)
Dropped 26 spots lower than his ISS ranking. He's also the first 19 year old selected. Nothing exceptional but no clear reason why he dropped either.

Round 3

3(65) - Philadelphia selects C Tyler Spurgeon (19) - 6'0", 209 lbs. - Kelowna Rockets, Canada (ISS Ranking: #50)
Was on my list. Really have no idea who I'm going to select now with my first pick.

3(66) - Edmonton selects C Jacob Blomqvist (18) - 6'2", 167 lbs. - Brynas IF, Sweden (ISS Ranking: #82)
Good technical and mental skills but bad skating.

3(67) - Toronto selects G Tuukka Rask (18) - 6'2", 200 lbs. - Tampereen Ilves Jrs., Finland (ISS Ranking: Unranked)
Has played four games in two years but he's never been injured. Complete unknown. My scouts never looked at him.

3(71) - Edmonton selects C/LW Matti Vuorela (18) - 5'8", 198 lbs. - Seinajoki Hockey Team Jrs., Finland (ISS Ranking: #54)
Single digit technical attributes, skating 4, bravery 5 - yuck.

3(76) - Calgary selects RW David Laliberte (19) - 6'1", 194 lbs. - P.E.I. Rocket, Canada (ISS Ranking: #79)
He's the highest ranked non-twenty year old on my list. Laliberte was drafted third overall in his QMJHL draft. I was also thinking about Darryl Sutter's son, Brett, but Laliberte has similar skills with more offensive upside. He potted 86 points in 68 games, including 42 goals and maintained a 7.46 AvR. I realize his numbers are probably inflated being he played in the Q but he' s probably a depth player in the future. He's got good physical tools, works hard and isn't afraid. I tend to draft mental attributes because they don't change much, if at all. Laliberte was on my draft list last year so the fact that he's still around now makes the decision somewhat easy.

3(90) - Dallas selects LW Patrick Asselin (18) - 6'1", 222 lbs. - London Knights, Canada (ISS Ranking: Unranked)
Saw only 34 games in the OHL this past season. Average technical attributes, below average physical attributes.

Round 4

4(94) - Calgary selects C/RW Brett Sutter (18) - 6'0", 200 lbs. - Brandon Wheat Kings, Canada (ISS Ranking: #119)
Typical Sutter. Good physical and mental tools, average physical tools. What he lacks in talent, he makes up for in heart and desire. Won a Memorial Cup with Kootenay last year. Looks to be a future captain with an influence of 17.

4(96) - Edmonton selects LW Aleksei Belousov (18) - 5'9", 200 lbs. - Metallurg Novokuznetsk Jrs., Russia (ISS Ranking: #44)
Dropped 52 spots from his ISS ranking. A speed of 5 and single digit technical attributes - doesn't look great to me.

4(98) - Toronto selects RD Adam McQuaid (18) - 6'4", 218 lbs. - Sudbury Wolves, Canada (ISS Ranking: #143)
Good technical attributes, speed of 6, work rate of 5. Played only 15 games in the OHL this past season but no injuries. What's up with Toronto selecting guys who've never played?

4(103) - Toronto selects C Danny Revelle (19) - 6'0", 206 lbs. - Mississauga Ice Dogs, Canada (ISS Ranking: #62)
Dropped 41 spots from his ISS ranking. 51 points in 68 games. Good technical attributes but lacks in other areas.

4(106) - Calgary selects C/LW Brock Nixon (18) - 6'1", 178 lbs. - Medicine Hat Tigers, Canada (ISS Ranking: #84)
Very similar attributes to Sutter except can play the left side and may have a bit more offensive potential.

4(109) - NY Islanders select C/RW Austin Sutter (19) - 5'10", 200 lbs. - Powell River Kings, Canada (ISS Ranking: Unranked)
Damn. My gamble failed. I was hoping this unranked played who didn't even play major junior would slip through the cracks and I'd pick him up later this year once he turned 20. Now that I see him again, he looks to have much better offensive potential than any of the players I've selected so far, although my scouts have said he'll be at most a depth player. This appears to be the real life son of Brent Sutter, owner, general manager and head coach of the Red Deer Rebels.

4(120) - Vancouver selects RW/LW Ashton Rome (19) - 6'2", 209 lbs. - Moose Jaw Warriors, Canada (ISS Ranking: #138)
I have the very next pick in the draft but this is another guy on my list I was hoping would still be around as a free agent when he turned 20. I'm very impressed with the AI.

Round 5

5(121) - Calgary selects LW Jordan McLean (18) - 5'11", 211 lbs. - Sicamous Eagles, Canada (ISS Ranking: Unranked)
My scouts weren't high on this guy but my gamble paid off last year in following my hunches. This player just turned 18 and is looking to play major junior. He played in an obscure junior league but he's double digit everything in attributes. He could be a diamond in the rough.

5(126) - Edmonton selects G Pierre Wahlgren (20) - 6'2", 231 lbs. - Mora IK, Sweden (ISS Ranking: Unranked)
Played only ten games in the past two years. My scouts never looked at him so I have no idea. He was signed for this year by Frolunda.

5(129) - Dallas selects LW Filip Riska (20) - 6'0, 200 lbs. - Oulun Karpat, Finland (ISS Ranking: Unranked)
Played in the SM-Liga this past season but only a 5 in skating and 3 in bravery.

5(132) - Calgary selects RW/LW Mike O'Dwyer (18) - 6'3", 224 lbs. - Red Deer Rebels, Canada (ISS Ranking: Unranked)
Won a Memorial Cup this year along with Dion Phaneuf. Big strong kid with double digit attributes in almost everything. One of my scouts wasn't high on him but five of them say he'll be a depth player.

5(136) - Calgary selects G Martin Barek (23) - 6'1", 198 lbs. - HC Moeller Pardubice, Czech Republic (ISS Ranking: Unranked)
I start my run of late round overage Europeans with the best goaltender according to my scouts. This year's draft was very weak in goal as compared to last year. Not too many have been selected. I don't have any expectations of Barek as he's a back-up with a strong Pardubice team in the Czech Extraliga, but he's double digit in every technical attribute and may develop. I only have one goalie prospect so I need another. He can play in Europe for two or three more years before I'll have to consider bringing him over.

5(138) - Edmonton selects G Joel Davis (20) - 6'0", 169 lbs. - Linkopings HC, Sweden (ISS Ranking: Unranked)
Interesting. I looked at him last year and this year because his attributes warrant it but my scouts are convinced he won't play in the NHL.

5(140) - Toronto selects LW Alexandre Sundstrom (18) - 6'0", 171 lbs. - Skelleftea AIK, Sweden (ISS Ranking: #120)
A player born in Vancouver, Canada. Good speed and off the puck skills. May develop in time.

Round 6

6(157) - Columbus selects C/LW Dale Mahovsky (20) - 6'1", 209 lbs. - Kootenay Ice, Canada (ISS Ranking: Unranked)
Here we go again. Another player I was hoping would go undrafted and I'd pick him up as a free agent. I look at his profile again and wonder why the hell I didn't draft him earlier. My scouts weren't high on him but 98 points in 72 games including 49 goals?

6(159) - Dallas selects LW/RW Daniel Waschuk (20) - 6'3", 189 lbs. - Regina Pats, Canada (ISS Ranking: Unranked)
Looks ok except the 4 in Determination would scare me away.

6(160) - Florida selects RD Evan Schafer (19) - 6'2", 220 lbs. - Tri-City Americans, USA (ISS Ranking: #61)
Drops 99 spots from his ISS ranking. He was highly rated on my list and by my scouts but there's just something about him that scared me off and apparently many others as well. He is strong with a big slapshot and high checking skills but this is combined with low skating and positioning - enough of a deterent for me.

6(170) - Toronto selects LW/C Joni Toykkala (21) - 6'1", 209 lbs. - Tampereen Tappara, Finland (ISS Ranking: Unranked)
Playing in the SM-Liga. Has very good technical skills but only a 7 in skating. You never know.

Round 7

7(186) - Edmonton selects G Jan Cech (18) - 5'9", 189 lbs. - IHC Pisek Jrs., Czech Republic (ISS Ranking: Unranked)
My scouts didn't like him but I did take a look. Young and could develop.

7(189) - Dallas selects LW Travis Fuller (19) - 6'2", 183 lbs. - Barrie Colts, Canada (ISS Ranking: #86)
Dropped 103 spots from his ISS ranking. Put up 41 points in 62 games. Good technical skill but single digits in every mental attribute.

7(190) - Minnesota selects LW Jon Grecu (19) - 6'1", 194 lbs. - Calgary Canucks, Canada (ISS Ranking: #160)
Here's a Calgary native playing in the Alberta Junior Hockey League that I was thinking of drafting. All the attributes are there but what scared me off was the message saying he's having trouble motivating himself.

7(196) - Calgary selects RD/LD Chris Zarb (20) - 6'4", 224 lbs. - Notre Dame Fighting Irish, USA (ISS Ranking: Unranked)
Fearing that I would lose yet another 20 year old to another team, I decide to draft a defenceman who was quite high on my list and can play the right side. This means one less European. Zarb is a stay at home defenceman. He was on my shortlist for last year's draft so I've had my eye on him for a while.

Round 8

8(216) - Edmonton selects G Dan Turple (20) - 6'0", 209 lbs. - Oshawa Generals, Canada (ISS Ranking: Unranked)
The fourth goaltender selected by Edmonton! Again, his attributes look pretty good but my scouts were not impressed.

8(219) - Dallas selects LW/RW Petteri Tasku (19) - 5'10, 216 lbs. - HIFK Helsinki, Finland (ISS Ranking: #125)
Dropped 94 spots from his ISS ranking. The plus is that he's playing in the SM-Liga and has double digit technical attributes. The minus is that he's all single digits in mental attributes.

8(226) - Calgary selects RD/LD Janne Niskala (23) - 5'11", 178 lbs. - Rauman Lukko, Finland (ISS Ranking: Unranked)
I really didn't know who to select here as my ninth round pick is reserved for that 28 year old German I talked about earlier. But as I compared Niskala to Andrew Ference, I realized that Niskala is already superior in many things and would probably supplant him on the right side. My scouts have raved about Niskala who has been steady for some time in the SM-Liga. I don't know if I'll bring him over immediately but more defensive depth can't hurt.

8(230) - Toronto selects LW/C Richard Clune (18) - 5'11", 202 lbs. - Kingston Frontenacs, Canada (ISS Ranking: Unranked)
Double digit techncial attributes, single digit mental attributes and only 7 in speed. Not a player I'd look at.

Round 9

9(246) - Edmonton selects G Tomi Fogstrom (20) - 5'10", 198 lbs. - Jeppis HT Pietarsaari Jrs., Finland (ISS Ranking: Unranked)
Unbelievable. The fifth goaltender drafted by Edmonton - from that prospect factory Jeppis? This is a long shot as Fogstrom is playing on a junior squad of a third division team in Finland. One of these goaltenders have to turn into something, right?

9(249) - Dallas selects LW Alexander Eaton (19) - 6'3", 227 lbs. - Toronto St. Michael's Majors, Canada (ISS Ranking: Unranked)
57 points in 64 games. Looks pretty good but the 4 in work rate and bravery would scare me off.

9(256) - Calgary selects LW Ivo Ruthemann (28) - 5'8", 169 lbs. - Adler Mannheim, Germany (ISS Ranking: Unranked)
This is a long shot. Ruthemann is a German star, having played 10 years in Switzerland before this past season in Germany. He dominated last year's World Championships so he was playing against some high level competition. I'll be bringing him over right away.

9(258) - Edmonton selects G Martin Hamrlik (18) - 5'10", 189 lbs. - HC Minor Prerov Jrs., Czech Republic (ISS Ranking: #117)
Dropped 141 spots from his ISS ranking. Edmonton drafts six goaltenders in this draft. Unreal.

9(260) - Toronto selects LW Sebastian Karlsson (18) - 6'1", 216 lbs. - Djurgardens IF Jrs., Sweden (ISS Ranking: #118)
Dropped 142 spots from his ISS ranking. I'm not sure why. His attributes look really good.

Edmonton is a mess. Dismantle the team and then draft 6 goaltenders. Wonder which one of them gets traded first...

Karim: I am sorry, its early and I am out of it, but where at Kovalchuck and Heatley playing right now? In my dynasty they refuse to resign with Atlanta, so Illya is in Russia, and Heatley in Sweden. I tried trading for both of their rights individually, and i got nodda. The price is too steep.

Just curious about with you.

Both Heatley and Kovalchuk were instrumental in Atlanta making the playoffs this season. Heatley won the Richard, Art Ross, Hart and Pearson trophies. For whatever reason though, they were quiet in the playoffs and were beat in the first round by Florida.

Im happy with Toronto's draft, though im still shocked they made the playoffs....It's nice to see Andrew Colgiano, Cory Viteralli and Jack Skille get picked up, 3 guys that I had during my shortlived St. Mike's dynasty back when the game was flawed....

Vancouver trades G Alexander Auld (24) to Pittsburgh for the rights to F Andy Sertich (22) and a 3rd Round Pick in 2006.

Nashville trades F Rem Murray (32) to Boston for the rights to F Byron Bitz (20).

F Jarome Iginla (27) has once again been voted Player of the Year by the fans.

The Calgary owners had paid out dividends totalling $5 million. The means we lost $2,772,490 this past season. My payroll budget is $36 million and I'm currently at $33.5 million so there isn't much wiggle room. Once again, I will probably not be involved in free agency but nonetheless, I have shorlisted D Sergei Gonchar (31), D Adrian Aucoin (31) and D Scott Niedermayer (31).

Notable unrestricted free agents:
F Anson Carter (31)
D Scott Ferguson (32)
F Glen Murray (32)
D Jason Smith (31)
D Adrian Aucoin (31)
D Bob Boughner (34)
D Eric Cairns (31)
D Jassen Cullimore (32)
D Eric Desjardins (36)
F Martin Gelinas (35)
F Eric Lindros (32)
D Scott Niedermayer (31)
D Todd Simpson (32)
D Scott Stevens (41)
D Chris Therien (33)
G Mike Dunham (33)
G Roman Cechmanek (34)
D Roman Hamrlik (31)
D Jaroslav Modry (34)
F Martin Rucinsky (34)
F Teemu Selanne (34)
D Sandis Ozolinsh (32)
F Pavel Bure (34)
F Valeri Bure (31)
D Sergei Gonchar (31)
G Nikolai Khabibulin (32)
F Alexei Kovalev (32)
D Danil Markov (28)
D Sergei Zubov (34)
F Zigmund Palffy (33)

F Ivo Ruthemann (28) has joined the Calgary Flames. He's in fact Swiss, not German, and has a 'Good' reputation. He was inexpensive as well, accepting a contract worth $1.9 million/3 years. I think he'll be an adequate replacement for Gelinas.

F Niklas Johansson (19), the prospect I traded to Carolina for F Erik Cole (26), has signed with Carolina. Young players are rushed a bit too much for my liking. I probably would have left him in Europe for two or three years.

Of the three defencemen I've shorlisted, the Board will only meet the demands of Adrian Aucoin. Both Gonchar and Niedermayer are asking for more than my Board is willing to pay. If I sign Aucoin at his demands, that would immediately put me $1.5 million over my payroll budget. It would also leave me with nine defencemen on my roster, all of whom have to clear waivers. I will not be signing any of these defencemen.

It is now July 1st. I bring up all of my young prospects and put them into a light offseason workout. I'll ramp it up in a couple weeks.

Another thing to consider is free agent status following this season. F Mark Bell (24), F Chris Clark (29), F Erik Cole (26), D Andrew Ference (26), D Jonas Frogren (25), D Toni Lydman (27), and D Karel Rachunek (25) will all be restricted free agents after this season, not to mention a few of my minor league prospects. F Chris Simon (33) and F Stephane Yelle (31) will be unrestricted free agents. I have enough up an coming young forwards who could replace Simon. I don't have anyone quite like Yelle and would like to resign him, if possible. I decide to make Ference and Simon available. Simon is unhappy at being shopped around.

One of my scouts has retired so I'll need a replacement.

F Jakub Sindel (19) has joined Dallas. I really like this player and think he'll make a big impact.

F Nick Taransky (20), F Cam Cunning (20), and D Dion Phaneuf (20), have joined the Calgary Flames. Both Phaneuf and Lewis have a chance to make this roster but we simply have too many defencemen now. I decide to make Toni Lydman available.

Los Angeles have re-signed Anson Carter as an unrestricted free agent for $10.2 million/3 years.

Vancouver have signed Chris Therien from Ottawa for $5.8 million/2 years.

Toronto have signed Roman Cechmanek from Los Angeles for $10.25 million/2 years.

New Jersey have signed D Glen Wesley (36) from Carolina for $1.3 million/1 year.

St. Louis have traded F Petr Cajanek (29) to Edmonton for D Sean O'Donnell (33), a 3rd Round Pick in 2006, and a 5th Round Pick in 2007. St. Louis won this deal hands down.

NY Rangers have signed Eric Cairns from Edmonton for $7.3 million/3 years.

Tampa Bay have signed F Michael Nylander (32) from Boston for $5.4 million/2 years.

NY Islanders trade F Junior Lessard (25) to Detroit for G Ty Conklin (29).

Philadelphia have signed Adrian Aucoin from the NY Islanders for $13.2 million/3 years.

Calgary Flames have traded D Toni Lydman (27) to Phoenix for the rights to F Fredrik Naslund (19), and a 3rd Round Pick in 2006.

NY Rangers have signed Danil Markov from Montreal for $14.1 million/4 years.

St. Louis have signed Sergei Gonchar from Toronto for $18.25 million/3 years.

Los Angeles have traded the rights to F Yannick Tifu (20) to Calgary for D Andrew Ference (26).

I'm pleased with my trades. Both Naslund and Tifu were on my draft board in 2004. Naslund is a sniper and played with my other Swedish prospect, F Jens Jacobs (19), on the top line for Sweden at the World Junior Championships. Tifu may be a defensive center that could eventually replace Yelle. I also get a 3rd Round Pick in 2006 out of it. This makes room for either Frogren, Phaneuf or Lewis to win the #6 defenseman's job. Another bonus is that I've reduced the payroll by $2.25 million, room that I'll need to re-sign Cole, Bell, Frogren and Rachunek and maybe Clark or Yelle.

San Jose have signed Nikolai Khabibulin from Tampa for $10.8 million/3 years.

Montreal have signed Alexei Kovalev from Los Angeles for $14 million/2 years.

Edmonton have signed D Mattias Timander (31) from Philadelphia for $5.5 million/3 years.

Colorado have signed Eric Lindros from NY Rangers for $14 million/2 years. He scored 18 goals and 38 points last season.

St. Louis have signed Scott Niedermayer from New Jersey for $23.25 million/3 years. Wow. St. Louis have both Niedermayer and Gonchar on the point.

Los Angeles have signed Teemu Selanne from Colorado for $6.2 million/2 years.

Los Angeles have signed Valeri Bure from Minnesota for $12.9 million/3 years. He had 16 goals and 41 points last season.

Tampa Bay have signed F Jozef Stumpel (32) from Los Angeles for $4.8 million/2 years.

Brett Hull (41) has finally retired after playing a year in Houston and is unemployed, looking for work as a non-player. So is Eddie Belfour (40), Curtis Joseph (38), Chris Chelios (43), and Al MacInnis (42). Dave Andreychuk (42) is the General Manager of the WHL's, Regina Pats. Looks average. Igor Larionov and Adam Oates have chosen a life away from hockey. Ron Francis (42) played the past season in St. John's of the AHL and is still looking to play. James Patrick (42) is still playing in Rochester of the AHL. Dominik Hasek (40) played for $85,000 this past season with HC Vitkovice of the Czech Republic. Mark Messier (44) is an unrestricted free agent and would be willing to sign with me as a player for the $250,000 minimum. Other than a Stamina rating of 5, the guy has the tools to play. I decide not to bring my All-Time favourite player to Calgary. It's better F Joel Lundqvist (23) gets regular playing time. Steve Yzerman (40) is making $220,000 as an Assistant Coach with San Jose, coming off a terrible season. He's proud to be in San Jose and is enjoying life at the team. Mario Lemieux (39) is making $190,000 as an Assistant Coach with Minnesota. Claude Lemieux (40) is making $130,000 as an Assistant Coach with Los Angeles but is turning into one hell of a coach. Look for him to eventually get a head coaching job somewhere. Patrick Roy (40) is the General Manager of the QMJHL's, Quebec Remparts. He doesn't look to be particularly good.

Los Angeles have signed F Trevor Linden (35) from Vancouver for $1.9 million/1 year.

Los Angeles have signed Mike Dunham from Detroit for $4.9 million/2 years.

Los Angeles have signed Pavel Bure from Tampa for $7.5 million/2 years.

Los Angeles have signed F Craig Conroy (33) from Tampa for $2.8 million/2 years.

Boston have re-signed Glen Murray for $7.1 million/2 years.

Joel Lundqvist will be out of action for 2 months after he suffered broken ribs in practice. That should make him available just in time for the home opener. I'm giving up on training and will just be setting everything to medium.

NY Islanders trade D Anders Eriksson (29) to Boston for the rights to F Tomi Mustonen (22).

Los Angeles have signed Sandis Ozolinsh from Anaheim for $11 million/2 years. That means to date, Los Angeles have issued $57.4 million in contracts during free agency this off-season.

NY Islanders trade the rights to D Jorgen Sundqvist (22) and a 4th Round Pick in 2006 to Edmonton for F Shawn Horcoff (26).

Phoenix trades the rights to F Dan Collins (18) to Nashville for D Jamie Allison (30).

Edmonton trades the rights to D Mikael Svensk (21) to Buffalo for the rights to F Maxim Sheviev (21).

I've gone through every team in Canada excluding Major Junior and the pros, shortlisting every player 18 years and older who I don't have a scouting report on. It came to 402 players or 29 pages on the shortlist. It could or should be a lot easier to assign scouts to the junior leagues but I'm curious if any of those players will be worth drafting.

Phoenix have signed F Cory Stillman (31) from Tampa for $4.7 million/2 years.

San Jose have signed Jason Smith from Edmonton for $7 million/2 years.

Vancouver trades F Geoff Sanderson (33) to Colorado for the rights to D Mikko Kalteva (21).

Yannick Tifu has agreed to terms with the Flames. An '18' in checking, along with great speed, strength and stamina might make him the perfect replacement for Yelle. I managed to get a two-way clause because I doubt he'll be playing this year.

Edmonton is giving another look to F Jason Bonsignore who is now 29 and coming off of playing two years on a second division Swiss team.

Exhibtion Game 1: @ University of Calgary
This game was scheduled just for my young players, prospects and minor leaguers. There is no reason to put the veterans in for a game like this. I set the lineup but I load up the default tactics and turn it over the head coach, Brian Sutter. We win 6-0, as we should. First star of the game is our British draft pick, F Matthew Myers (20), who had two goals and an 8 rating. Second star of the game was F Michael Lambert (21), with a goal and an assist and an 8 rating. Third star of the game was my undrafted free agent signing F Josh Bonar (21), who had a goal, a fight and an 8 rating. Even with the default tactics, our defense is giving the puck away much too often. Dion Phaneuf and D Grant Lewis (20) were unimpressive. F Eric Nystom (22) shows flashes of skill but gave the puck away four times. I don't think F Jarret Lukin (21) and F Chris Hodgson (21) will ever be regular NHL players. They get another exhibition game and then they will be demoted.

Exhibition Game 2: @ University of Lethbridge
Same deal here. Lundqvist is now healthy so I put him in. G Curtis McElhinny (22) gets the start in place of G Brent Krahn (23). This is the performance I was expecting. Phaneuf is first star with a goal, two assists and a 10 rating. Myers is second star with another two goal performance. McElhinney is third star with 14 saves, a shutout and an 8 rating. D Robyn Regehr (25) will be out for a month with a sprained MCL. I've become tired of this act and once he gets healthy I will try and trade him.

Dallas have signed Roman Hamrlik from Philadelphia for $19.5 million/3 years.

Exhibition Game 3: @ Vancouver
Kiprusoff and Buhrer split time in this one. All the regulars are in except for Phaneuf and Lewis. It'a wild 8-5 Vancouver win. Markus Naslund had four goals and an assist. He schooled Phaneuf on his fourth goal. Phaneuf scored a powerplay goal but was a -3, had two giveaways and a 6 rating. Lewis had one assist, one hit, three giveaways and an 8 rating. Ruthemann did nothing. The best lines for us was the third line of Reinprecht-Yelle-Bell and the fourth line of Simon-Lundqvist-Nilson. Simon did enough in this game that he's no longer available. Spets and Lambert have impressed enough that I make Ruutu available and think about making Clark available as well.

Exhibition Game 4: vs. Vancouver
Same story here but Lewis has been demoted for a year in the AHL. I've placed my two young goaltenders as available for loan because it doesn't look like they'll get much playing time in the minors. Hopefully some team will come in to get them. I want to see a line of Cole-Lambert-Spets to see if either Clark or Ruutu or both will be supplanted. I also want to try Bell at center instead of the wing on a line of Lombardi-Bell-Kobasew. Vancouver wins 3-1, the third goal being an empty net goal. F Lars Erik Spets, my 8th Round draft pick last season, has a goal, four shots, a takeaway and an 8 rating. F Michael Lambert (21) was also impressive. Phaneuf had an assist, four hits and an 8 rating. Can Phaneuf, Lambert and Spets all make the team? Lambert doesn't have the greatest attributes though. The 28 year old, Ruthemann, has done absolutely nothing so far, with time on the top line.

The coaches reports are worthless. I was hoping they'd help me make a decision. Last year Spets was going to be a player of quality. Despite a great pre-season, they want me to place him on the block. Also, Phaneuf will never be any good and Warrener has worn out his welcome. I don't think I'll waste any time reading their assessments any more.

Exhibition Game 5: @ Edmonton
Kobasew is out with a minor injury. Iginla is out because he's already in game condition. Simply another chance to verify who makes the team. The lines are all shuffled around to see different combinations. Tactics are still controlled by Brian Sutter. We lose 6-3, giving up three powerplay goals. Lambert looked out of place and his -2 performance tonight has cost him a chance to make the roster. Ruutu didn't play well either. With one exhibition game left, it looks like by Norweigan draft pick will make the squad.

Vancouver have signed Eric Desgardins from Philadelphia for $2.6 million/1 year.

Vancouver have signed D Sergei Zubov (35) from Atlanta for $5.6 million/2 years.

Exhibition Game 6: vs. Edmonton
Buhrer will play the whole game in this one and I play the regulars. Ruthemann finally shows up in this one and we win 5-1. Spets has won a job with the big club.

NHL Waiver Draft
Carolina selects D Lars Jonsson (23) from Boston.
Nashiville selects F Jarkko Ruutu (30) from Calgary.
Boston selects F Denis Shvidky (24) from Edmonton.
Boston selects G Martin Biron (28) from Buffalo.
Toronto selects D Brad Brown (29) from Buffalo.
Los Angeles selects G Mathieu Garon (27) from Montreal.
Montreal selects D Radek Martinek (29) from Washington.
Montreal selects D Josef Boumedienne (27) from Washington.

Game 1: @ Minnesota
Kiprusoff starts. Joel Lundqvist and Chris Clark are healthy scratches. Robyn Regehr is out. Here are the line combinations:

Ruthemann-Richards-Iginla
Cole-Bell-Kobasew
Reinprecht-Yelle-Spets
Simon-Lombardi-Nilson

Leopold-Warrener
Souray-Rachunek
Phaneuf-Forgren

Kiprusoff
Buhrer

I set everything to normal/default and turn the tactics over to the head coach. Team instructions are set to normal/mixed, rolling four lines and normal shooting. I'm not sure if Team Instructions are followed if I have tactics turned off. Lombardi scores first on a penalty shot. Ruthemann adds one on the powerplay from Iginla and Richards. Gaborik deflects a point shot from Schultz to make it 2-1 Calgary. Half-way through the third, Richards scores, from Phaneuf and Ruthemann, to make it 3-1 Calgary. We kill off a 5-on-3 late in the game to win it 3-1. Spets was the only one with a '6' rating.

* Ivo Ruthemann (1g, 1a, '8')
** Brad Richards (1g, 1a, '8')
*** Miika Kirprusoff (17 saves, '8')

Philadelphia have signed Bob Boughner from Colorado for $4 million/1 year.

Game 2: vs. Phoenix
Kiprusoff starts. No reason to change lineup or strategy. Novoseltsev scores early on the powerplay to make it 1-0 Phoenix, on a deflection from a Mara point shot. Kiprusoff robs Novoseltsev a couple of more times on another Phoenix powerplay to keep the score 1-0. Iginla ties it up early in the second with a short handed goal. Krajicek scores to make is 2-1 halfway through the third. We get a late powerplay where we can't even muster a shot on goal, followed by a two-minute penalty on Spets to end the game. The last goal is an empty netter by Nagy. Phoenix 3 - Calgary 1. Spets, Simon, Frogren and Leopold got '6' ratings.

* Paul Mara (2a, '8')
** Daymond Langkow (2a, '8')
*** Ivan Novoseltsev (1g, '8')

Game 3: vs. St. Louis
Kiprusoff starts. No change to the lineups. I'm not playing this one out in full. The only change to Team Instructions is to Barrage the puck on goal. Simon fought McKenna to a draw in the second but it was scoreless after forty minutes of play. Rycroft scores twenty second into the third to give St. Louis a 1-0 lead. Three minutes later Reinprecht ties it up on a rebound from Hnlicka after a Yelle shot. Another three minutes sees Yelle score on the breakaway to make it 2-1 Calgary. Richards scores into an empty net from Ruthemann and Kobasew but Drew Stafford scores for St. Louis with 23 seconds left. Final score: Calgary 3 - St. Louis 2. Simon was the only person with a 6 rating. The Cole-Bell-Kobasew line was a combined -5. Spets got his first point with an assist on Yelle's goal. Frogren led the way with 5 hits.

* Stephane Yelle (1g, 1a, '8')
** Sergei Gonchar (2a, '8')
*** Drew Stafford (1g, '8')

Tifu may be better than Lundqvist in a few years so I think I definitely got the better deal.

Pittsburgh trades F Sergei Anshakov (21) to Columbus for D Wade Belak (29).

Game 4: vs. Vancouver
Kipper starts. No linup changes. I switch Boardplay from Mixed to Power. What the hell is finesse boardplay anyway? Morrison scores first on the powerplay to make it 1-0. He adds another top shelf on a feed from Bertuzzi to make it 2-0. No scoring in the second. Iginla scores early in the third from Cole and Bell. Bell then gets a penalty and Bertuzzi scores on a one-timer to make it 3-1 Vancouver with about ten minutes left in the game. 9 seconds later Ruthemann scores from Richards and Nilson. 3-2 Vancouver. With 1:35 left in the game, Bell scores right under the crossbar to force overtime. 32 seconds into overtime, Naslund muscles Warrener off the puck and scores the winner. Final Score: Vancouver 4 - Calgary 3 (OT) We gave up two powerplay goals but went 0/4 ourselves. No one got a '6' rating but Chuck Kobasew will be out for a month with a sprained MCL. Two major injuries in his first two years and I'm starting to wonder if he's injury prone. Dion Phaneuf was +3 with 3 hits, 1 blocked shot, 1 giveaway and 1 takeaway for an '8' rating.

* Todd Bertuzzi (1g, 2a, '10')
** Markus Naslund (1g, 1a, '9')
*** Brendan Morrison (2g, 0a, '8')

Game 5: @ Columbus
Buhrer starts. Lundqvist comes in for the injured Kobasew. Bell moves to right wing on the second line while Lombardi centers him and Cole. Lundqvist replaces Lombardi on line four, centering Simon and Nilson. Rostislav Olesz scores on a deflected Marcel Goc shot. 1-0 Columbus. Lindstrom scores halfway through the second to add to the lead. Lundqvist scores 17 seconds into the third on a pass from Simon. 2-1 Columbus. 14 seconds later Simon sets up Nilson to tie the game at 2. A minute and a half later Jason Marshall gives the lead back to Columbus. Olesz scores his second to make it 4-2 Columbus. Warrener takes a hooking penalty and Nash scores on the powerplay to make the final score, Columbus 5 - Calgary 2. Leopold was -3 and Warrener was -2. Buhrer, Leopold, Cole, Reinprecht and Bell got '6' ratings. I really can't tell what went wrong in this game but I was kind of expecting a loss because Buhrer is "lacking match fitness."

* Rostislav Olesz (2g, '8')
** Rick Nash (1g, 1a, '8')
*** Sascha Goc (2a, '8')

Game 6: @ Edmonton
Kipper starts (91%). Souray (70%) and Phaneuf (76%) are left in the lineup but I remove them from special teams. No changes up front. 9 seconds into the game Laraque takes a penlaty. 25 seconds later, Iginla scores on the powerplay on a feed from Ruthemann. Yelle scores from Reinprecht and Spets to make it 2-0. The first period ends with Iginla scoring on a breakaway to make it 3-0. Halfway through the second, Rachunek scores a powerplay goal to make it 4-0. Ruthemann scores on a feed from Richards and Nilson to make it 5-0 Calgary. Marc-Andre Pouliot puts Edmonton on the board in the third with a backhand shot. Ruthemann scores again on a feed from Iginla and Richards. Final Score: Calgary 6 - Edmonton 1. Lombardi was the only player with a '6' rating. The Board is pleased with the victory over our arch rivals.

* Jarome Iginla (2g, 2a, '10')
** Ivo Ruthemann (2g, 2a, '10')
*** Brad Richards (3a, '9')

Rostislav Olesz (Cbs) wins Offensive Player of the Week.
Toni Lydman (Pho) wins Defensive Player of the Week. 4 points in 5 games with a 8.00 rating - why didn't he ever do that for us?

My scouts have finished scouting all 400+ players on the shortlist. Not even one is worth considering. Last time I'm going through that clicking exercise. I trust the players returned by my scouts when I send them to look at draft eligible players will the main ones worth considering.

Game 7: vs. Buffalo
Buhrer starts because I'm saving Kipper for Vancouver. No change to the lineup but Souray and Phaneuf are back on special teams. Jillson starts the scoring with the assist to Hecht. Drury deflects a McLaren point shot to put Buffalo up 2-0. Richards scores on the powerplay from Iginla and Ruthemann to cut the lead in half. Buffalo regains the two goal lead on a goal by Satan on a feed from Dumont. Iginla leaves Adam Mair in the dust and sets up Ruthemann for a goal. 3-2 Buffalo. Ortmeyer takes a penalty and Iginla ties it up on the powerplay. Lundqvist scores another powerplay goal to give us a lead for the first time as we head into the third period. Souray scores two minutes in from Cole and Lombardi. Richards puts the nail in the coffin on a feed from Iginla. Final Score: Calgary 6 - Buffalo 3. We outshoot Buffalo 27-16. Buhrer had a '5' rating but Nabokov had a '4'. Yelle was the only other player who didn't have at least a '7' rating; he ended up with a '6' rating.

* Jarome Iginla (1g, 3a, '10')
** Ivo Ruthemann (1g, 2a, '10')
*** Joel Lundqvist (1g, '8')

Game 8: @ Vancouver
Kiprusoff starts. No change to the lineup. Johan Davidsson opens the scoring on the powerplay on the backhand. 1:24 later, Jovanovski gives Vancouver a 2-0 lead. In the second period, Vancouver scores again; Morrison on the powerplay. Iginla puts are first goal on the board a few minutes later. 1:07 into the third period, Kariya salts it away with another goal; 4-1 Vancouver. Reinprecht scores on a breakaway only to be answered by Morrison. Final Score: Vancouver 5 - Calgary 2. We outshot Vancouver 35-31 but were 0/2 on the powerplay, yet 2/5 on the penalty kill. We outhit them 23-11. Simon, Richards and Nilson had '6' ratings.

* Brendan Morrison (1g, 2a, '9')
** Ed Jovanovski (1g, 1a, '8')
*** Paul Kariya (1g, 1a, '8')

Game 9: vs. Tampa Bay
Buhrer starts. Regehr goes in for Frogren. Demitra scores first to give Tampa a 1-0 lead. Souray ties it up late in the first. 1:55 in the second, Richards strips Sarich of the puck and puts it five-hole to give us a 2-1 lead. St. Louis ties it up. Dingman takes a penalty and Iginla scores on the powerplay on a feed from Ruthemann to give us a 3-2 lead heading into the third. With five minutes left, St. Louis second of the game forces overtime where nothing is resolved. Final Score: Tampa Bay 3 - Calgary 3 Buhrer, Lundqvist and Reinprecht got a '6' rating.

* Martin St. Louis (2g, '8')
** Sheldon Souray (1g, 1a, '8')
*** Pavol Demitra (1g, '8')

St. Louis have signed Zigmund Palffy from Los Angeles for $18.25 million/2 years.

John Leclair (Phi) wins Offensive Player of the Week.
Eric Brewer (Edm) wins Defensive Player of the Week.

Game 10: vs. Columbus
Kiprusoff starts. Chris Clark comes in for Lundqvist, for his first game of the year. Spets centers the fourth line while Clark replaces Spets on line three. Lindstrom scores the first goal of the game to give Columbus a 1-0 lead. Iginla scores three minutes later to tie it up. No scoring in the second. Reinprect scores two minutes into the third on a feed from Phaneuf. 2-1 Calgary. Richards one-times an Iginla pass for another goal. Final Score: Calgary 3 - Columbus 1 We outshoot Columbus 33-18 but go 0/4 on the powerplay. No one had a '6' rating.

* Steve Reinprecht (1g, '8')
** Jarome Iginla (1g, 1a, '8')
*** Miika Kiprusoff (17 saves, '8')

So far in my game, he looks ready to play except he has a wimpy wristshot, only rated '9'. He's doing well in the AHL though.

Game 14: vs. Toronto
Kiprusoff starts. I have to call up Darren Lynch (22) to replace Souray (64%). Rachunek (80%) is removed from special teams. No changes up front. Domi starts the scoring on a feed from Alexander Steen. Sundin uses his great backhand to make it 2-0 Toronto. Clark and Domi get into a scrap. Iginla strips Kaberle and sets up Bell for our first goal. Iginla then sets up Warrener for the tieing goal before the first period ends. In the second, Mogilny follows up his own rebound to make it 3-2. Domi gets a hooking penalty and Ruthemann sets up Iginla for a powerplay goal to make it all even at 3 at the end of the second. With 4:41 left in the game Domi gets the winner after he stripped Leopold of the puck. Final Score: Toronto 4 - Calgary 3. Yelle, Reinprecht and Kiprusoff got '6' ratings. Nilson will be out for 10 days with a twisted knee.

* Jarome Iginla (1g, 2a, '9')
** Mark Bell (1g, 1a, '8')
*** Harold Druken (2a, '8')

Todd Bertuzzi (Van) wins Offensive Player of the Month.
Fedor Tutin (NYR) wins Defensive Player of the Month.
Dion Phaneuf (Cgy) wins Rookie of the Month.

Game 15: vs. Nashville
Buhrer starts. No change on defence. Simon in for the injured Nilson. 1:45 in Upshall puts Nashville on the board. Late in the second Weinhandl puts Nashville up 2-0. 32 seconds late Cole scores on a feed from Spets. With about five minutes left, Reinprecht scores to force overtime. 23 seconds into overtime, Upshall scores the winner on his second of the game. Final Score: Nashville 3 - Calgary 2 (OT). Warrener suffered a dislocated shoulder and will be out for two months. No one had a '6' rating but our top line was a combined -7.

* Scottie Upshall (2g, '9')
** Ryan Suter (2a, '9')
*** David Legwand (1a, '9')

Game 16: @ Edmonton
Kiprusoff starts. Warrener and Phaneuf, Kobasew and Nilson are out. A scoreless game. Completely even in all stats. Lombardi, Rachunek and Simon had a '6' rating. Regeher suffers yet another "potential" injury and his conditioning drops to 65%.

* Ryan Miller (29 saves, '9')
** Miika Kiprusoff (31 saves, '8')

Sebastien Bordeleau (Min) wins Offensive Player of the Week.

Game 17: @ Montreal
Kiprusoff starts. Phaneuf back in for Regehr (75%). No change up front. Comrie scores first off of a Kiprusoff rebound on a Zednik shot. Ruthemann scores on a feed from Iginla on the powerplay. 1-1. Spets scores on another powerplay to give us a 2-1 lead. With 2 seconds left in the first period, Sundstrom strips Souray and feeds Nokelainen to tie the game at 2. Phaneuf loses the puck and Boumedienne blasts it by Kiprusoff. 3-2 Montreal. Sundstrom stickhandles by Souray and feeds Komisarek who makes it 4-2 Montreal. The third period starts with a fight between Cole and Worrell with the decision going to Montreal. Kovalev pads the lead on a solo effort. 5-2 Montreal. Another point shot, this time from Martinek, beats Kipper. 6-2 Montreal. Worrell deflects a Komisarek point shot to add another. Final Score: Montreal 7 - Calgary 2. Iginla, Reinprecht, Ruthemann, Yelle and Leopold all got '6' ratings. Richards, Souray and Rachunek got a '5' rating. Kiprusoff got a '3' rating. I give an official warning to Kiprusoff for a poor performance. He accepts his warning without comment.

* Josef Boumedienne (1g, 1a, '8')
** Mike Komisarek (1g, 1a, '8')
*** Petr Nedved (2a, '8')

I set Robyn Regehr's status to available. I have tried several various combinations to try and land D Brooks Orpik (25), D Brendan Witt (30) or D Cory Sarich (27) without any luck.

Game 18: @ Nashville
I throw Kipper back in after that dreadful performance. Regehr is in for Lynch. Filip Hollstrom opens the scoring on a breakaway. Yelle shoots, Reinprecht jumps on the rebound to tie the game. 11 seconds later Hartnell regains the lead. Suter then scores on the powerplay to make the score 3-1 Nashville. Lundqvist eats into the lead by deflecting a point shot from Regehr. In the third, Isbister scores on the powerplay to widen the lead. Just as another penalty expires, Weinhandl adds more insurance with a goal top shelf. 1:15 seconds later, Jarkko Ruutu gets his revenge with another goal. Final Score: Nashville 6 - Calgary 2. Souray had a '6' rating. Kiprusoff got a '5'. The game stats were even but our top line has been awful the past two games. I wish I could criticize everyone right now.

* Brad Isbister (1g, 2a, '10')
** Scott Hartnell (1g, 2a, '8')
*** Jarkko Ruutu (1g, '9')

Phoenix trades D Aaron Johnson (22) to Edmonton for F Radek Dvorak (28).

Edmonton trades G Ryan Miller (25) and a 4th Round Pick in 2006 to Carolina for G Cam Ward (21). What, is Miller too old for the Oilers?

Game 19: @ Florida
Buhrer starts. Warrener, Nilson and Kobasew are out with injuries. I change the team instructions to hard forecheck, pressing, hitting and backchecking. I also use a normal setting for the forward lines, instead of equal. Half-way through the first, Simon stops Holik with a hit, strips the puck and scores his first of the season. No scoring in the second. Spets goes in on a breakaway to start the third but is stopped. Fortunately, Iginla was following up on the play and puts it in for a 2-0 lead. Final Score: Calgary 2 - Florida 0. We outshot Florida 23-13. Yelle and Reinprecht got '6' ratings. Regehr once again gets a banged up knee which sees his conditioning drop to 65%.

* Jarome Iginla (1g, '8')
** Marco Buhrer (13 saves, '8')
*** Chris Simon (1g, '8')

Ilya Kovalchuk (Atl) wins Offensive Player of the Week.
Jimmy Howard (Det) wins Defensive Player of the Week.

Detroit have claimed G Kevin Weekes (30) from waivers.

Game 20: @ Phoenix
Buhrer gets another start. Regehr is out, Lynch is in. Nilson is now healthy and comes in for Clark. Iginla muscles Brad Ference off the puck, Ruthemann picks up the loose puck and blows it bye Boucher with a quick wristshot. A powerplay goal gives us a 1-0 lead. Iginla then deflects a Leopold point shot for another powerplay goal. 38 seconds into the second, Brad Ference blows a slapshot by Buhrer to get Phoenix on the board. 51 seconds later, Langkow strips the puck from Phaneuf and jams it home to tie the game at 2. Spets and Reinprecht work down low and eventually Spets sets up Reinprecht for our third goal that regains the lead. Late in the third, Phaneuf scores his first NHL goal which provides enough insurance for us to hold on. Final Score: Calgary 4 - Phoenix 2. Erik Cole was the only player with a '6' rating. After a 5 game road trip we finish .500. I take Regehr off of the available list. He's better than the players I'm getting offered and is still useful when he does play.

* Steve Reinprecht (1g, '8')
** Jarome Iginla (1g, 1a, '8')
*** Ivo Ruthemann (1g, '8')

Game 21: vs. St. Louis
I'll ride Buhrer until he falters. Regehr in for Lynch. Kobasew has returned healthy and replaces Simon. I make Souray and Rachunek the third defence pairing and decide to use them more as specialty teams. I also change up the forward line, focusing more on morale and form then attributes. With about three and a half minutes left in the first period, Petr Sejna scores on a backhand on a feed from Kapanen and Chipchura. 59 seconds later, Nilson scores on a solo effort to tie the game. The newly promoted Reinprecht sets up Kobasew for a goal 2:28 into the second. 2-1 Calgary. Reinprecht continues his solid play, blowing by Zabransky before blowing a wrister past Osgood. 3-1 Calgary. 9 seconds later, Yelle adds another tally. There is no scoring in the third period. Final Score: Calgary 4 - St. Louis 1. We outshoot St. Louis 24-10.

* Chuck Kobasew (1g, '8')
** Markus Nilson (1g, 1a, '8')
*** Steve Reinprecht (1g, 1a, '8')

Mike Grier finishes it off with another. Finals Score: Colorado 4 - Calgary 0. Souray will be out for 10 days with a twisted knee. Lombardi, Cole, Phaneuf and Buhrer got a '6' rating. Phaneuf struggled with a -3 but he wasn't the only one.

* David Aebischer (19 saves, '9')
** Mike Grier (1g, '8')
*** Kimmo Timmonen (2a, '8')

Jeff Halpern (Wsh) wins Offensive Player of the Week.
Bryan McCabe (LA) wins Defensive Player of the Week.

Game 23: vs. Detroit
Kiprusoff starts. No lineup changes but lines are scrambled based on average rating. The first period is scoreless. Rachunek scores, on a pass from Phaneuf to start the scoring. Lombardi strips Lang of the puck, spins and fires for a 2-0 lead. Datsyuk feeds Landon Wilson to get Detroit on the board. Late in the period, after an amazing acrobatic save by Kiprusoff, Whitney jumps on the rebound and ties the game at 2. Draper to Maltby and Detroit takes a 3-2 lead in the third. Datsyuk feeds Scott Walker who beats Regehr and then the goalie. 4-2 Detroit. Lundqvist drops the gloves and catches Kasparaitus by surprise, winning the fight fairly easily. With 43 seconds left, Ruthemann and Richards set up Iginla to make it 4-3 but with the goalie pulled, Datsyuk puts it into the empty net. Final Score: Detroit 5 - Calgary 3. Kiprusoff was the only player with a '6' rating. Forgren will be out 10 days with knee pain.

With 1 second left in the first period, a Yelle backhander beats Cloutier. 1 minute into the second, a Kobasew wristshot beats Cloutier on the glove hand side to make it 2-0. Chris Nielsen responds for Vancouver with his first of the season. Henrik Sedin ties the game at 2 on a breakaway. Johan Davidsson then gives Vancouver a 3-2 lead. With about ten minutes left, Joffrey Lupul makes it 4-1 Anaheim. Lombardi's shot is saved by Giguere but Lundqvist is there for the garbage and it's 4-2. With three and a half minutes left, Lundqvist strips Salei and scores his second of the game but that was as far as we could get. Final Score: Anaheim 4 - Calgary 3. Spets, Nilson, Reinprecht and Souray all got '6' ratings. Buhrer was rated '5'.

* Chris Kunitz (2g, 1a, '10')
** Petr Sykora (1g, 2a, '9')

Game 27: @ Los Angeles
Kiprusoff finally gets another start. No change to the lineup except I put the hot Lundqvist up on the first line and demote Richards to the second line. Game 29: @ Phoenix
Kiprusoff starts. Frogren is now healthy so he replaces Lynch. Iginla is only at 75% so I keep him in but remove him from special teams. No scoring in the first. Bell scores an unassisted goal in the second for a 1-0 lead. One minute into the third, Lundqvist strips Morris of the puck and shoves it in for a 2-0 lead. 1:22 later Cleary scores for Phoenix. Dan Lacouture ties the game at 2 a few minutes later. Ruthemann then strips Morris of the puck and flips a backhander past Boucher for a 3-2 lead. Ruthemann then scores an empty netter. Final Score: Calgary 4 - Phoenix 2. Spets was the only player with a '6' rating.

* Ivo Ruthemann (2g, '8')
** Daniel Cleary (1g, '8')
*** Miika Kiprusoff (1a, 29 saves, '8')

Game 31: @ Dallas
Kiprusoff starts. No change on defence but Regehr (75%) is removed from special teams. I move Bell to right wing; he's struggled as a center. * Brad Richards (1g, '8')
** Jordan Leopold (2a, '8')
*** Milan Michalek (1g, '8')

I demote F Lars Erik Spets (20) to Lowell. After a good start, he tailed off and produced too many '6' ratings.

Game 38: @ Philadelphia
Kiprusoff starts. No change to the lineup. Ruthemann banks one in off the post to give us a 1-0 lead. In the second, a Reinprecht slapshot finds the mark, on a feed from Simon. *** Steve Reinprecht (1g, '8')

I offer a contract to D Chris Zarb (20), my 7th Round draft pick from this year. He's playing for Notre Dame but with a 8.40 AvR, he needs better competition. He is delighted to have come to terms.

Game 39: @ St. Louis

Chipchura scores to give St. Louis the lead. Richards answers less than a minute later. Ricci scores in the second to regain the lead for St. Louis. 29 second later Palffy scores on a feed from Weight to make it 3-1. Edmonton's, F Mike York (27), will be out for 4 months after suffering a separated shoulder.

Nathan Horton (Fla) wins Offensive Player of the Week.
Zdeno Chara (Ana) wins Defensive Player of the Week.

Montreal has placed D Karl Dykhuis (33) on waivers. I submit a claim because he has better attributes than Rachunek and would be an easy way to add veteran presence on the blueline. I win the claim.

Detroit Red Wings have claimed F Marcel Hossa (24) from waivers.

For whatever reason, D Sheldon Souray (29) has seen his reputation jump from 'Very Good' to 'Superb'. I don't know why.

* Ivo Ruthemann (1g, 1a, '8')
** Andreas Lilja (2a, '8')
*** Erik Cole (1g, '8')

I'm starting to worry about my goaltending. I don't think it's up to the quality needed to win in the playoffs. Buhrer is at best a backup, but he's unreliable. Kiprusoff is not consistent. I been looking at G Dan Blackburn (22), G Alex Auld (24) and G Rick DiPietro. DiPietro has 20s in every goaltending category but is not untouchable. Nonetheless, I haven't been able to try any of these goaltenders away from their teams.

Game 41: vs. Edmonton
Buhrer starts. I demote Lynch. Souray is back and in for Frogren. Dykhuis is in for Rachunek. There was no scoring in the first. Simon and Scott Barney go at it in the second and it's no contest; Simon destroys Barney. However, Petr Cajanek gets the first goal of the game. Halfway through the second, Lundqvist tips a Ruthemann shot to tie the game at 1. Late in the period, Lundqvist scores another, this time a powerplay goal on the backhand to make it 2-1. 1:10 later, Bell scores to end the period with a 3-1 lead. In the third, Kobasew adds to the lead with a powerplay goal. With 1:14 left in the game, Bell adds his second. Final Score: Calgary 5 - Edmonton 1. We outshot Edmonton 33-24, killed off eight powerplays, scored two powerplay goals of our own and outhit Edmonton, 29-10. No one had a '6' rating.

* Marco Buhrer (23 saves, '8')
** Dion Phaneuf (2a, '8')
*** Matthew Lombardi (2a, '8')

New York Ranger's, F Josef Balej (23), will be out for five months after suffering a broken leg.

Game 42: vs. Philadelphia

Marc Chouinard ties it up for Minnesota. 58 seconds later, Kobasew scores a powerplay goal to regain the lead. Iginla then scores his 300th career goal by again deflecting a Cole shot to make it 3-1. Iginla completes the hattrick by tipping in a Souray shot from the point on the powerplay. Chouinard scores his second with 53 seconds left in the second period. There was no scoring in the third period. Final Score: Calgary 4 - Minnesota 2. Kiprusoff and Yelle had '6' ratings.

* Jarome Iginla (3g, '10')
** Erik Cole (3a, '9')
*** Chuck Kobasew (1g, '8')

Dany Heatley (Atl) wins Offensive Player of the Month.
Kevin Weekes (Det) wins Defensive Player of the Month.
Dion Phaneuf (Cgy) wins Rookie of the Month. With this award, Phaneuf's reputation jumps from 'Very Good' to 'Superb'.

I check out the finances of my team. Bell, Clark, Frogren, Richards and Rachunek are all restricted free agents. Both Richards and Cole want in the $3.5 million range while Bell wants approximately $2.2 million. Frogren wants $650,000 and Rachunek wants a little over a million. Simon and Yelle are unrestricted free agents. I'm currently at $33 million and my budget is $36 million. I won't be resigning Simon or Yelle. I make Clark, Rachunek and Simon available due to financial reasons. The other players have to stay with this team. Interestingly, my board will allow salaries of $9.5 million/year for both Richards and Cole, even though they're only asking for less than half that amount.

Ivo Ruthemann and Marco Buhrer have been selected for the Swiss roster in the upcoming Winter Olympics.

Game 44: vs. NY Islanders
Buhrer starts. Frogren in for Phaneuf, who is at 80% and in need of rest. The guy is only 20 and has been my #1 defenceman, on the top powerplay and penalty killing unit. Simon in for Reinprecht. 49 seconds into the game, Lombardi scores an unassisted goal. That's the only scoring in the first. Simon and Perrott got into a fight but Simon lost this one. 8 minutes into the second, Richards gives us a 2-0 lead. 28 seconds into the third, Richards pots another on a breakaway to make it 3-0. Cole scores on a deflected Souray point shot to make it 4-0. Nilson scores with 38 seconds left in the game. Final Score: Calgary 5 - NY Islanders 0. No one had a '6' rating.

* Brad Richards (2g, 1a, '10')
** Matthew Lombardi (1g, 1a, '9')
*** Erik Cole (1g, 1a, '8')

World Junior Championships Quarter-Finals
Switzerland 2 vs. Finland 1
Sweden 0 vs. Slovakia 2

Mark Bell has signed a new contract with Calgary worth $4 million/2 years with the potential of adding $500,000/yr. in bonuses.

Erik Cole has signed a new contract with Calgary worth $6 million/2 years with the potential of adding $1.72 million/yr. in bonuses.

One thing I've noticed is that playing time is key to development. I thought Lundqvist might be a fouth liner or fringe NHLer, maybe a 3rd line center if I was lucky. He had a lot of 11 & 12s in attributes. As soon as I bumped him up to the second line and also gave him some playing time on the first line and powerplay, his attributes have moved up to 13, 14 and some 15s. The things he was already good like deflections, have also improved. My British prospect, Myers, who is playing in the AHL, has seen a slower improvement but he is improving. Spets, on the other hand, had a lot of 14s and 15s to begin with, and seems to have levelled off. He won't supplant anyone on the first two lines so his development might stagnate at where he is right now.

Game 45: vs. Colorado
Buhrer starts. Phaneuf in for Frogren. Reinprecht in for Simon, who suffered a mild injury in practice. Ruthemann scores on a feed from Iginla to make it 1-0. 22 seconds later, Forsberg strips Phaneuf of the puck and it's a tied game. There was no scoring in the second. Ortmeyer gets his revenge by scoring eight minutes into the third. 41 seconds later, a Blake slapshot finds the range to make it 3-1. Richards scores late to make it interesting but Brashear puts another into the empty net. Final Score: Colorado 4 - Calgary 2. We outshot Colorado 21-14. Cole had a '6' rating. Buhrer had a '5' rating.

* Peter Forsberg (1g, 2a, '9')
** Rob Blake (1g, '8')
*** Jed Ortmeyer (1g, '8')

Brad Richards has signed a new contract with Calgary worth $11.1 million/3 years with the potential of adding $1.254 million/yr. in bonuses.

Russia has been relegated from the World Junior Championships.

World Junior Championships Semi-Finals
Switzerland 2 vs. Canada 3
Slovakia 1 vs. USA 4

Game 46: vs. Toronto
Kiprusoff starts. No change to the lineup. Spets opens the scoring on a breakaway. In the second period, Yelle makes it 2-0. In the third, Alexander Steen finds the net but that's all Toronto could muster. Final Score: Calgary 2 - Toronto 1. We hold Toronto to 15 shots. Leopold and Nilson had a '6' rating.

* Lars Erik Spets (1g, 1a, '8')
** Stephane Yelle (1g, 1a, '8')
*** Alexander Steen (1g, '8')

Mike Modano (Phi) wins Offensive Player of the Week.
Alexander Auld (Pit) wins Defensive Player of the Week.

World Junior Championships Final
Canada 4 vs. USA 3

I place F Chris Clark (29) on waivers after several attempts to trade him. No one would take him, even for a 9th round pick.

Game 47: vs. Florida
Kiprusoff starts. Rachunek in for Dykhuis. No change up front. Cole scores on the powerplay in the first period and we hold yet another team to under twenty shots. Final Score: Calgary 1 - Florida 0. Reinprecht and Spets got '6' ratings.

* Erik Cole (1g, '8')
** Miika Kiprusoff (17 saves, '8')
*** Jarome Iginla (1a, '8')

Game 48: vs. Vancouver
Kiprusoff starts. Dyhuis in for Phaneuf, Frogren in for Rachunek. Simon in for Reinprecht. No scoring in the first. In the second, Iginla beat Desjardins and then beat Cloutier with a wristshot to make it 1-0. With 1:39 left in the period, Kris Beech ties it up. Then with 1:04 left in the game, Morrison scores to win it. Final Score: Vancouver 2 - Calgary 1. We again hold the opposition to less than 20 shots. We need better goaltending although Kipper got an '8' rating. Yelle and Simon had '6' ratings.

* Dan Cloutier (26 saves, '9')
** Brendan Morrison (1g, '8')
*** Jarome Iginla (1g, '8')

NY Rangers', D Danil Markov (29), will be out for 4 months with a broken pelvis.

Toronto Maple Leafs have claimed Chris Clark off of waivers.

NY Islanders trade a 2nd Round Pick in 2006 to Calgary Flames in exchange for D Karel Rachunek (26).

Game 49: @ St. Louis
Buhrer starts. No change to the lineup. There is no scoring as we head into overtime. 2:36 into OT, Palffy scores. We were outshot 29-9 and went 0/5 on the powerplay. Ouch. Bell, Spets, Yelle, Richards, Nilson and Simon all had '6' ratings.

* Zigmund Palffy (1g, '8')
** Chris Pronger (1a, '8')
*** Nikolai Khabibulin (9 saves, '8') - Khabibulin in goal with Pronger, Niedermayer, Gonchar and Jackman on the blueline. Wow.

Dan Cloutier (Van) wins Defensive Player of the Week.

Game 50: @ Detroit
Kiprusoff starts. Phaneuf in for Regehr (70%) and Lynch in for Warrener (70%). Reinprecht in for Simon. No scoring in the first. Wilson scores first for Detroit on a feed from Kasparaitus. 2:08 into the third Whitney makes it 2-0. Wilson gets his second of the game a few minutes later. Final Score: Detroit 3 - Calgary 0. Four goals in the last five games won't get it done. Lombardi, Lundqvist and Reinprecht had '6' ratings.

* Kevin Weekes (22 saves, '9')
** Ray Whitney (1g, '8')
*** Darius Kasparaitus (2a, '8')

Calgary Flames trade the rights to D Janne Niskala (24), the rights to F Kristopher Persson (22) and a 4th Round Pick in 2006 originally from Buffalo to Buffalo for F Taylor Pyatt (24).

Game 51: vs. Anaheim
Kiprusoff starts. Simon in for Reinprecht. Kobasew scores a powerplay goal to make it 1-0. Richards then scores two minutes later on a feed from Iginla. That's Iginla's 600th career point. With 7 seconds left in the period, Simon scores on a feed from Spets. Kobasew scores another powerplay goal in the second. No scoring in the third. Final Score: Calgary 4 - Anaheim 0. We hold Anaheim to 9 shots. No '6' ratings.

* Chuck Kobasew (2g, '8')
** Brad Richards (1g, '8')
*** Dion Phaneuf (1a, '8')

St. Louis trades G Chris Beckford-Tseu (21) and D Simon Skoog (22) to Buffalo for F Ales Kotalik (27).

Souray's reputation has dropped back to 'Very Good'. I have no idea what controls this.

Game 52: vs. New Jersey
Buhrer starts. Leopold is out (74%) so Regehr is back in as is Warrener. Ruthemann got injured in practice so the newly acquired Pyatt takes his place. Madden scores the first goal for an early lead. Elias scores early in the second for a 2-0 lead. Langenbrunner then scores on the powerplay. No scoring in the third. Final Score: New Jersey 3 - Calgary 0. We were held to 18 shots. Lombardi had a '6' rating.

* John Madden (1g, '8')
** Patrick Elias (1g, 1a, '8')
*** Corey Schwab (18 saves, '8')

Brett Hull has become the general manager of the WHL's Seattle Thunderbirds. He told the media that my first round draft pick, F Kris Chucko (19), still has a lot to learn, only serving to make Chucko unhappy.

Game 53: @ San Jose
Kiprusoff starts. Leopold in for Regehr (75%). Ruthemann back in for Spets. Simon scores three minutes in for an early 1-0 lead. Iginla scores, deflecting a Warrener shot. That's Warrener's 100th career point. Two minutes in the second, Ruthemann scores on a wristshot for a 3-0 lead. Richards scores early in the third on a breakaway. Milan Michalek ruins the shutout with 1:28 left in the game. Final Score: Calgary 4 - San Jose 1. We held San Jose to 16 shots. Lombardi had another '6' rating.

* Chris Simon (1g, '8')
** Ivo Ruthemann (1g, 1a, '8')
*** Brad Richards (1g, 1a, '8')

Final Score: Calgary 3 - Buffalo 1. We kept Buffalo to 16 shots. Nilson, Reinprecht and Lombardi had a 6 rating.

Interestingly, Ruthemann and Buhrer have been called up to play for Switzerland. This would never happen in the NHL. I have to call up Brent Krahn to be a back-up to Kiprusoff now.

Game 58: @ Carolina
Kiprusoff starts. Warrener in for Frogren. With Ruthemann out, Pyatt moves onto the second line. No scoring in the first. In the second, Calgary native Craig Adams gets Carolina on the board. With about five minutes left in the game, Dykuis forces overtime with his first ever goal for Calgary. In overtime, with 1:01 left, Kobasew scores on a breakaway. Final Score: Calgary 2 - Carolina 1 (OT). We were outshot 30-20. Bell, Nilson, Lombardi, Spets, Reinprecht and Pyatt all got '6' ratings.

* Jarome Iginla (2a, '9')
** Robyn Regehr (1a, '8')
*** Miika Kiprusoff (29 saves, '8')

Game 59: @ Detroit
Krahn will get his first ever NHL start because Kiprusoff is only at 75%. Krahn has only played 2 games in the minors this season so he is lacking match fitness. Simon in for Lombardi. Zetterberg scores first on the powerplay. Scott Walker scores another powerplay goal to make it 2-0. Cole scores on the powerplay in the second. Draper scores with 17 seconds left in the second period to regain a two goal lead. Shanahan scores another powerplay goal in the third to seal the deal. Final Score: Detroit 4 - Calgary 1. Nilson, Yelle, Lundqvist, Spets and Krahn got '6' ratings.

* Henrik Zetterberg (1g, '8')
** Kevin Weekes (22 saves, '9')
*** Robert Lang (2a, '8')

Montreal trades the rights to G Jaroslav Halak (20) to Atlanta for F Tommi Santala (26) and a 4th Round Pick in 2007.

Game 60: @ Dallas
I give McElhinney a try in goal because neither Krahn nor Kiprusoff are ready to start. McElhinney hasn't played a game all year in the minors. Lombardi in for Spets. Bell scores in the first to make it 1-0. Morrow answers in the second. Lombardi trips Primeau and a penalty shot is awarded. 2-1 Dallas. Tomica scores on the powerplay to make it 3-1 Dallas. 22 seconds later, Lombardi scores. No scoring in the third. Final Score: Dallas 3 - Calgary 2. We outshoot Dallas 19-15. Kobasew, Simon and McElhinney get '6' ratings.

* Keith Primeau (1g, '8')
** Brenden Morrow (1g, 1a, '8')
*** Marek Tomica (1g, '8')

The East All-Stars have beaten the West All-Stars, 8-6, at the Gaylord Entertainment Center in Nashville. Only 8,477 bothered to show up - sounds about right. Jamie Langenbrunner wins MVP.

Brian Rolston (Bos) wins Offensive Player of the Week.
Rob Blake (Col) wins Defensive Player of the Week.

Game 61: vs. San Jose
Kiprusoff starts, Krahn backs up. Spets in for Cole, who suffered a minor injury in practice. Simon scores late in the first to make it 1-0. Spets makes it 2-0 in the second, on a feed from Simon. Bernier answers for San Jose. With three minutes left in the game, Derek Roy forces overtime, which solves nothing. Final Score: San Jose 2 - Calgary 2. We outshot San Jose 32-19. Lundqvist and Pyatt got '6' ratings.

* Chris Simon (1g, 1a, '8')
** Derek Roy (1g, '8')
*** Steve Reinprecht (2a, '8')

Washington trades G Rostislav Stana (26) and a 3rd Round Pick in 2006 to Columbus for the rights to F Ryan Callahan (20) and a 2nd Round Pick in 2006.

Tampa Bay trades the rights to D Charles Fontaine (20) and a 4th Round Pick in 2006 to Edmonton for F Bill Muckalt (31).

The scheduling is off. The NHL is still playing games while the Olypmics are on. As a result, Ruthemann, Buhrer, Richards and Iginla won't be available for this game. I recall F Eric Nystrom (23) from Lowell. Kiprusoff starts. No change on defence. Lines are all shuffled around. Warrener opens the scoring. Lundqvist re-directs a Regehr point shot to make it 2-0. Olesz scores a shorthanded goal to end the period. To start the second period, Simon absolutely destroys Svitov in a fight. Pyatt scores a subsequent powerplay goal to make it 3-1. Souray adds a tally for a 4-1 lead. Cole adds one more as does Pyatt with his second of the game. 6-1. Grand-Pierre adds a goal two minutes into the third. Final Score: Calgary 6 - Columbus 2. We outshoot Columbus 30-10. Kiprusoff and Simon had '6' ratings.

* Taylor Pyatt (2g, '8')
** Rhett Warrener (1g, '8')
*** Jordan Leopold (2a, '8')

Brian Rolston (Bos) wins Offensive Player of the Month.
Martin Grenier (Tor) wins Defensive Player of the Month.
Martin Grenier (Tor) wins Rookie of the Month.

Kobasew seems to be developing into quite the player. What are his stats on the year? Are you training him any different than the rest of the forwards?

Amazingly, I won the Stanley Cup for Philadelphia in 2005 (2004 I was knocked out in the Eastern Conference final by Washington(!!!) who were swept by an awesome Vancouver team).

I was pretty proactive with trading, but a lot of the better trades occurred when the computer submitted trades. I managed to get the young defender from NJ, later on I managed to grab an unhappy Brian Giota from them (they were in turmoil even though they were in 3rd place). Managed to get a few other great young players. Tried to grab an angry Kobasew from Calgary but they turned me down...I was dumbfounded when Columbus traded away Rick Nash for a 33 year old Canadian player while in the midst of a playoff run (they wouldn't respond to any of my trades for him).

Really enjoying the game, I don't play it much because it sucks me in for long long periods of time.

Before the season started, he suffered a sprained MCL which caused him to miss 5 weeks. Last season, he missed 4 months with a separated shoulder. I hope he isn't injury prone.

His stats so far this season:

48GP - 19g, 19a, 38pts, +10, 10pim, 7.63AvR, 49ht, 30ga, 29ta

I train him with a medium across the board. Once I saw that his slapshot and wristshot went up to 18, if either of those attributes drop below 18, I bump up shooting to intensive.

Spets is injured for about 10 days and my internationals have returned so I need to reduce the roster by one. F Eric Nystrom (23) is demoted to Lowell after playing his first NHL game and registering an assist and an '8' rating.

Game 63: vs. Detroit
Buhrer starts. Regeher suffered a mild injury in practice so Frogren is in. Simon is the only healthy scratch up front. Pyatt rips a shot that hits the post and Lombardi is quick on the rebound to make it 1-0. In the second, Ruthemann puts it five-hole on Weekes to make it 2-0. 1:05 later, Phaneuf sets up Warrener for a 3-0 lead. 2:42 into the third period, a Lundqvist slapshot finds the mark. Final Score: Calgary 4 - Detroit 0. Yelle was the only one with a '6' rating.

* Marco Buhrer (28 saves, '9')
** Matthew Lombardi (1g, '8')
*** Joel Lundqvist (1g, '8')

The trading deadline is one week away. The only position I'd like to upgrade is goaltending but there is no way I'll bring in something better than what I have without trading away some serious quality. I like my major league roster, my twenty-year olds are developing nicely in the AHL and there isn't a prospect I have that I really want to unload as they are now all my original draft picks. There is depth at every position. I don't want to deal away my draft picks. This is the team we're going to war with.

NY Rangers trade F Martin Samuelsson (24) and a 3rd Round Pick in 2007 to Minnesota for G Josh Harding (21).

Game 64: @ Ottawa
Buhrer starts. No change to the lineup. Iginla scores a powerplay goal on the backhand on a feed from Ruthemann. 1-0. Mirnov scores for Ottawa a few minutes later on a breakaway to tie things up. Less than two minutes later, Ruthemann regains the lead for Calgary. With 1:38 left in the first, a Lundqvist backhand extends the lead to two. No scoring in the second. In the third, Leopold does his best Bobby Orr impersonation, carries the puck from behind his own goal, gains the offensive zone, splits the defence, tries to deke the goalie but Lalime pokechecks it but fortunately the puck bounces right to Leopold who pots it into the open net for his goal of the year and a 4-1 lead. 34 seconds later, Reinprecht adds another. A few minutes later, a Bell backhand from the slot finds the mark. Final Score: Calgary 6 - Ottawa 1. We outshoot Ottawa 39-21. No '6' ratings on this night. We officially have a goaltending controversy in Calgary.

* Jordan Leopold (1g, 2a, '10')
** Ivo Ruthemann (1g, 1a, '8')
*** Marco Buhrer (20 saves, '8')

Sergei Samsonov (Bos) wins Offensive Player of the Week.
Marco Buhrer (Cgy) wins Defensive Player of the Week. Buhrer tells the media that I'm the reason for his recent form. His reputation jumps from 'Good' to 'Very Good'.

San Jose trades F John Pohl (26) to Philadelphia for the rights to D Juhamatti Aaltonen (20).

I have signed F Fredrik Naslund (20) from VIK Ungdom Hockey Jrs. He shouldn't be playing in the junior leagues in Sweden. He has 95 points in 47 games, including 65 goals and an 8.17 AvR. F Kris Chucko (19), Naslund and F Jakub Sindel (19), who is playing in Dallas, were all guys I would have drafted in the 1st round of the draft two years ago. Naslund is a guy I've wanted since the beginning so I think in the long-run, the trade for Lydman will work out fine. I plan on giving him a year in the AHL unless he lights up the pre-season and maintains it during the regular season.

Game 65: @ Washington
Buhrer starts. Regehr is healthy so he replaces Frogren. No scoring in the first or second. 44 seconds into the third, Axelsson scores for Washington. Zubrus scores another with eight minutes left. Final Score: Washington 2 - Calgary 0. Kobasew and Pyatt got '6' ratings.

* Olaf Kolzig (21 saves, '8')
** P.J. Axelsson (1g, '8')
*** Dainius Zubrus (1g, '8')

NY Rangers trade G Henrik Lundqvist (24) to Buffalo for the rights to D Thomas Morrow (22) and a 2nd Round Pick in 2006.

Calgary Flames trade D Robyn Regehr (25), F Michael Lambert (21) and the rights to D James Hakewill (23) to Pheonix for D David Tanabe (25). Ok. I've shaken things up big time. This is my attempt to solidfy this team for the placeoffs. Regehr was unreliable because of this frequent injuries - often he'd get banged up with a minor injury during a game and wouldn't be available for the next game or two. Tanabe gives us an offensive defenceman on the right side that we didn't have; I was playing Leopold or Souray there and they are both natural left-sided players. Lambert will be an NHL player. He has all the mental and physical tools and is a leader. His technical attributes are good but I didn't see them improving in the AHL although he was pulling off major numbers. I simply have a lot of depth at center/left wing that he was expendable asset. Hakewill will never be a player. I hope this trade doesn't shake up the chemistry too much. Regehr wasn't an alternate captain because he wasn't in the lineup often enough but still had an influence of 17. Many teams were trying to acquire Tanabe because he had a requested a trade. That makes three former Flames blueliners on Phoenix - Lydman, Regehr and Morris.

Game 66: @ Tampa Bay
Buhrer starts. Tanabe and Frogren in, Souray is out (80%). 33 seconds in, Ruthemann follows his own rebound and scores on the backhand. In the second, a Dykhuis shot hits the post but Lombardi is quick on the rebound for a 2-0 lead. With 1:53 left in the period, Demitra gets Tampa on the board. In the third, Lundqvist uses his great hand-eye coordination to deflect a Warrener slapshot to regain the 2 goal lead. Unfortunately, 17 seconds later, Lecavalier answers for Tampa. Kobasew scores into an empty net to seal the deal. Final Score: Calgary 4 - Tampa Bay 2. We were 2/6 on the powerplay and outhit Tampa 26-12. Frogren had 6 hits while Phaneuf had 4. No '6' ratings.

* Pavol Demitra (1g, '8')
** Jonas Frogren (2a, '8')
*** Vincent Lecavalier (1g, '8')

Philadelphia trades the rights to D Michal Sersen (20) to Columbus for D Trevor Hendrixx (20).

San Jose trades F Niko Dimitrakos (26) to Montreal for F Andrei Kastsitsyn (21).

St. Louis trades D Shawn Belle (21) to Philadelphia for F Radovan Somik (28).

Los Angeles trades F Mark Rooneem (23) to Chicago for D Kevin Kantee (22).

NY Rangers trades D Corey Potter (22) to Anaheim for F Martin St. Pierre (22).

Washington trades D Luke Fritshaw (21) to Detroit for D Tyler Reid (23).

Edmonton trades F Antti Miettinen (26) to Atlanta for F John Mitchell (21).

Philadelphia trades D Shawn Belle (21) to Edmonton for D Brett Hedican (35). Three way deal?

Pittsburgh trades G Maxime Daigneault (22) to Ottawa for F Brad Tapper (27).

Ottawa trades F Mikhail Yakubov (24) to Florida for a 4th Round Pick in 2006, a 4th Round Pick in 2007, and the rights to F Troy Brouwer (20).

NY Islanders trade a 1st Round Pick in 2006 and F Joel Perreault (23) to Chicago for F Steve Sullivan (31) and a 2nd Round Pick in 2006.

Tampa Bay trades D Duncan Keith (24) and an 8th Round Pick in 2006 to Boston for F Patrice Bergeron (20).

Detroit trades a 5th Round Pick in 2006, a 4th Round Pick in 2007, a 4th Round Pick in 2008, and the rights to D Steve Ward (20) to Buffalo for D Brian Campbell (26).

Philadelphia trades D Casey Borer (20) to Dallas for the rights to G Eero Kilpelainen (20).

Minnesota trades a 4th Round Pick in 2006 to Boston for F Brandon Seagal (22) and a 7th Round Pick in 2006.

San Jose trades F Alyn McCauley (28) to Montreal for F Rane Carnegie (21).

Washington trades D Rick Berry (27) to Columbus for a 2nd Round Pick in 2007, a 4th Round Pick in 2006, and the rights to F Sean Courtney (20).

Nashville trades D Shane Hnidy (30) to Ottawa for F Adam Taylor (21).

Colorado trades F David Jones (21) to Carolina for D Nikita Korovkin (22), a 4th Round Pick in 2006 and a 4th Round Pick in 2007.

21 trades at the trade deadline.

Game 67: @ Atlanta
Buhrer starts. Souray in for Dykhuis. Kozlov scores four minutes in to get Atlanta on the board. Iginla scores on the powerplay to ties it up. Cole scores to give us a 2-1 lead. In the second Stacy Roest scores on a rebound from a shot by Randy Robitaille to tie the game at 2. 2:20 into the third, Richards scores to regain the lead. Lundqvist takes a penalty and Heatley scores on the subsequent powerplay to tie the game at 3. With 8:30 left, Cole's wristshot finds the mark for a 4-3 lead. Final Score: Calgary 4 - Atlanta 3. We were outshot 38-29 but outhit Atlanta 25-12. Bell was the only player with a '6' rating.

* Erik Cole (2g, '8')
** Stacy Roest (1g, 1a, '8')
*** Slava Kozlov (1g, 1a, '8')

Kovalchuk was on pace for a great year but then he suffered a partially torn MCL in January. He's healthy now as Atlanta heads into the playoffs

Here are his final stats:

48gp, 31g, 31a, 62pts, +17, 10pim, 7.75AvR, 38ht, 26ga, 27ta

I decided to offer contracts to three goalies on my ECHL team. The only reason I'm doing so is to move them out of the way for my real prospects. These washed-up has-beens are taking playing time away from my players.

Brendan Morrison (Van) wins Offensive Player of the Week.
Dick Tarnstrom (Wsh) wins Defensive Player of the Week.

Game 68: @ Chicago
Kiprusoff starts. No change to the lineup. No scoring in the first. 3:51 into the second, Kobasew scores on a breakaway. 1:22 later, Iginla strips the puck on the forecheck and fires it home for a 2-0 lead. Warrener scores on a slapshot from the point later in the period for a 3-0 lead. 31 seconds into the third, Arnason gets Chicago on the board. However, Lombardi answers for Calgary. Final Score: Calgary 4 - Chicago 1. We were outshot 28-22 but outhit Chicago 20-11. Ruthemann suffered a shoulder contusion and will be out for about a week. No '6' ratings but a lot of our guys are banged up which sees their conditioning drop to around the 60% mark.

* Miikka Kiprusoff (21 saves, '8')
** Matthew Lombardi (1g, '8')
*** Chuck Kobasew (1g, '8')

Game 69: @ Boston
Buhrer starts in this back-to-back situation. Dykhuis in for Warrener (76%). I also reduce Phaneuf's playing time (84%). Spets in for Ruthemann. Richards scores first to get an early lead. Boynton ties it up 1:02 into the second. Battaglia later gives Boston a 2-1 lead. In the third, Iginla ties it up with his 30th of the season. Blake Wheeler scores on the powerplay and Boston retakes the lead. Thornton scores into an empty net. Final Score: Boston 4 - Calgary 2. Kobasew, Spets and Reinprecht all had '6' ratings.

* Blake Wheeler (1g, 1a, '8')
** Erik Cole (2a, '8')
*** Nick Boynton (1g, '8')

One of my goalie prospects, G Taylor Dackers (19), playing in the WHL, suffers a torn ACL and will be out 7 months. In the last six months, he's had serious injuries to his groin, ankle and wrist, and now this. I get the hint.

Game 70: vs. Atlanta
Kiprusoff starts. No change to the lineup. No scoring in the first. In the second, Lundqvist follows his own rebound and fires it top shelf for a 1-0 lead. Bell and noted fighter Kip Brennan get into a scrap with Bell coming out on the losing end. 1:32 into the third, a Souray wristshot from the point finds the twine. Final Score: Calgary 2 - Atlanta 0. We outshoot Atlanta 44-15 but only manage two goals. Nurminen was in net for Atlanta. Spets and Yelle get '6' ratings.

* Sheldon Souray (1g, '8')
** Miikka Kiprusoff (15 saves, '8')
*** Joel Lundqvist (1g, '8')

Lundqvist, Kobasew and Cole suffer minor injuries in practice over the span of a couple off-days. I think I'm going to reduce conditioning training to light. It's late in the season and guys who log a lot of ice-time really don't need conditioning training. If I see physical attributes dropping, I'll change it but the last thing I need late in the season is a bunch of injuries.

Markus Naslund (Van) wins Offensive Player of the Week.
Dan Cloutier (Van) wins Defensive Player of the Week.

Game 71: vs. San Jose
Kiprusoff starts. Warrener in for Dykhuis. Simon in for Spets. 21 seconds in, Matt Cooke scores on his own rebound. He scores another a few minutes later on the powerplay. Cheechoo scores to make it 3-0 San Jose early. Bernier scores San Jose's fourth goal in the first period. No scoring in the second. Marleau adds a meaningless goal in the third. Final Score: San Jose 5 - Calgary 0. A very poor outing against the worst team in the NHL even though we outshot them 38-26. Tanabe and Leopold got '6' ratings. Kiprusoff got a '5' and I'm tempted to warn him but decide not to. Worse yet, Lundqvist, our second line center, will be out for a month with a sprained ACL, which means he will miss our first playoff series.

* Johnathan Cheechoo (1g, 3a, '10')
** Patrick Marleau (1g, 3a, '10')
*** Vesa Toskala (38 saves, '9')

Physical attributes have dropped for a couple players so I'm putting conditioning training back to 'Medium'.

Game 72: vs. Minnesota
Buhrer starts after that awful performance by Kiprusoff last game. No change on defence. Ruthemann is healthy and in for Spets. Simon will get lots of playing time now that Lundqvist is out for a month. Lombardi becomes our second line center. Nilson scores in the first to give us a 1-0 lead. About three minutes later, Ruthemann feeds Iginla in the slot who fires it home. 2-0. With 1:49 left in the second, Daigle scores to get the Wild on the board. Gaborik scores in the third to force overtime which settles nothing. Final Score: Minnesota 2 - Calgary 2. No '6' ratings.

* Dion Phaneuf (1a, '8')
** Marcus Nilson (1g, '8')
*** Marion Gaborik (1g, '8')

Game 73: @ Colorado
Kiprusoff starts in this back-to-back game. No change to the lineup. Blake scores to give Colorado a 1-0 lead. In the second, Brashear deflects a Blake shot to make it 2-0. Hejduk scores shortly after for a 3-0 lead. Richards scores a consolation goal in the third. Final Score: Colorado 3 - Calgary 1. We were outshot 30-15. Pyatt suffered a groin strain and will be out for two weeks. Yelle was the only one with a '6' rating.

* Rob Blake (1g, 1a, '8')
** Donald Brashear (1g, 1a, '8')
*** Brad Richards (1g, '8')

Hugh Jessiman (NYR) wins Offensive Player of the Week.
Chris Pronger (Stl) wins Defensive Player of the Week.

Game 74: vs. Nashville
Kiprusoff starts. Dykhuis in for Leopold (74%). No scoring in the first. Ruutu and Simon got into a fight in the second but Simon seemed an unwilling combatent and lost the fight. Isbister scores a powerplay goal to get Nashville on the board. With 4:31 left in the game, Reinprecht scores to tie it at 1. With 2:45 left, Glazachev regains the lead for the Predators. 33 seconds later, Cole ties it up at 2. 28 second later, with 1:44 left in the game, Upshall scores the winner. Final Score: Nashville 3 - Calgary 2. We outshot Nashville 33-19. Yelle, Bell and Simon had '6' ratings. Worse yet, Reinprecht will be out for three weeks with a broken wrist. Suddenly, we are short on centers.

* Konstantin Glazachev (1g, '8')
** Steve Reinprecht (1g, '8')
*** Rhett Warrener (1a, '8')

I recall F Yannick Tifu (21) from Lowell of the AHL.

Game 75: vs. Los Angeles
Buhrer starts. Leopold in for Warrener (75%). Tifu starts in place of Reinprecht. Iginla scores about halfway through the first to make it 1-0. Pavel Bure ties it up on the man advantage. With 1:49 left in the first, Ruthemann scores his 25th to regain the lead. In the second, Tifu winds up with a slapshot to score his first ever NHL goal and give us a 3-1 lead. In the third, Kobasew adds one to make it 4-1. Ruthemann then adds another on the powerplay. Final Score: Calgary 5 - Los Angeles 1. Yelle was the only one with a '6' rating. We officially qualify for the playoffs in Game 75.

* Jarome Iginla (1g, 2a, '10')
** Ivo Ruthemann (2g, '8')
*** Marco Buhrer (24 saves, '8')

Game 76: vs. Dallas
Buhrer starts. No change to the lineup. Iginla scores in the first. Sindel quickly ties it up for Dallas. Daze scores on the powerplay to make it 2-1 Dallas. 56 seconds into the second, Cole ties it up. Borer answers for Dallas. With 6:35 left in the game, Daze scores another powerplay goal to give Dallas a two goal lead. At 58:36, Iginla finds the mark to bring us within one. With 50 seconds left and the goalie pulled, Ruthemann ties the game. Overtime solves nothing. Final Score: Dallas 4 - Calgary 4. We were outhit 24-9 and gave up two powerplay goals. Tifu, Simon and Buhrer had '6' ratings.

* Ivo Ruthemann (1g, 1a, '8')
** Eric Daze (2g, '8')
*** Jarome Iginla (2g, '8')

Markus Naslund (Van) wins Offensive Player of the Month.
Craig Rivet (Mtl) wins Defensive Player of the Month.
Dion Phaneuf (Cgy) wins Rookie of the Month.

Alexei Kovalev (Mtl) wins Offensive Player of the Week.
John Grahame (TB) wins Defensive Player of the Week.

Game 77: vs. Edmonton
Kiprusoff starts. Warrener in for Dykhuis. No scoring in the first. In the second, Ruthemann stripped Laflamme of the puck and beat Markkanen with a wristshot. Later, Iginla scores his 35th on a powerplay. Bell then scores on a feed from Spets. Bell scores his second, again with the set up from Spets. No scoring in the third. Final Score: Calgary 4 - Edmonton 0. We outshot Edmonton 32-14. No one had a '6' rating.

* Ivo Ruthemann (1g, 1a, '8')
** Lars Erik Spets (2a, '8')
*** Miikka Kiprusoff (14 saves, '8')

One of my scouts with a 'Superb' reputation has his contract expiring and does not want to renegotiate. His attributes indicate that he may be destined to move up the coaching ranks. I decide to give him an offer as an Assistant Coach which is exactly what he wants.

Game 78: @ Anaheim
Kiprusoff starts. Dykhuis in for Warrener (80%). Four minutes in, Sykora gets Anaheim on the board. With 2:18 left in the period, Richards ties it up. Lupul scores a powerplay goal in the second to regain the lead. In the third, Ruthemann ties it up from the slot. With 5:46 left in the game, Iginla makes it 3-2. With the goalie out, Bell scores an empty netter. Final Score: Calgary 4 - Anaheim 2. Kobasew and Spets have '6' ratings. Dykhuis suffers a twisted knee and will be out a few days.

* Jarome Iginla (1g, 2a, '10')
** Ivo Ruthemann (1g, 2a, '9')
*** Brad Richards (1g, 1a, '8')

I recall F Eric Nystrom (23) from Lowell because Cole is banged up (65%) and won't be ready for tomorrow's game.

Game 79: @ Los Angeles
Buhrer starts in this back-to-back game. Warrener in for the injured Dykhuis. Nystrom in for Cole. Iginla scores a powerplay goal to initiate the scoring. 1:18 later, Lombardi scores another powerplay goal. In the second, Lombardi adds his second of the game to make it 3-0. 1:30 later, Pavel Bure gets LA on the board. 12 seconds after he first scored, Bure pots his second of the game to cut the deficit to 1. 49 seconds after that, Spets regain a two goal lead for Calgary. 1:35 after that, Souray scores on the powerplay. No scoring in the third. Final Score: Calgary 5 - Los Angeles 2. No one had a '6' rating.

* Jarome Iginla (1g, 2a, '10')
** Matthew Lombardi (2g, 1a, '10')
*** Pavel Bure (2g, '8')

F Ivo Ruthemann (29) suffers a groin strain in practice and will be out for 3 weeks. It couldn't happen at a worst time.

Game 80: vs. Phoenix
Kiprusoff starts. No change to the lineup. With 2:32 left in the first, Paul Mara scores a powerplay goal for Phoenix. 2:26 into the second, Langkow scores on another powerplay. A Simon slapshot then finds the mark to make it 2-1. A Yelle wristshot then manages to tie the game. Nagy then regains the lead for Phoenix but Leopold answers back quickly. Souray scores in the third to break the deadlock. Final Score: Calgary 4 - Phoenix 3. Lombardi and Kiprusoff have a 6 rating. Phaneuf and Iginla get banged up and may not be ready for the next game - the last thing I need.

* Daymond Langkow (1g, 2a, '10')
** Ladislav Nagy (1g, 2a, '9')
*** Chris Simon (1g, 1a, '8')

For some reason, Kiprusoff's attributes have jumped.

Game 81: vs. Minnesota
Kiprusoff starts. Dykhuis in for Phaneuf (84%). Pyatt, who is now healthy, in for Iginla (76%). I can't afford an injury to either of these players. No scoring in the first or second periods. 27 seconds into the third, Pyatt scores. Lombardi adds another to make it 2-0. 2:05 later, Lombardi adds his second of the game for a 3-0 lead. Nilson then gets his tenth of the season to make it 4-0. 1:00 later, Wiemer gets Minnesota on the board. Gaborik then scores on the powerplay and that's as far as the comeback goes. Final Score: Calgary 4 - Minnesota 2. We went 0/7 on the powerplay. Nystrom was the only one with a '6' rating.

* Matthew Lombardi (2g, '8')
** Marian Gaborik (1g, 1a, '8')
*** Marcus Nilson (1g, '8')

Game 82: @ Edmonton
Kiprusoff starts. Phaneuf in for Dykhuis, Iginla in for Nystrom. Iginla scores to make it 1-0. 47 seconds later, Lombardi makes it 2-0. 38 seconds into the second period, Kobasew makes it 3-0. Iginla then makes it 4-0 on the powerplay. Lombardi then adds his second of the game. 5-0. Kobasew adds his second of the game. 6-0. In the third, Shawn Belle gives the Oilers a goal. Schremp adds another but that's all she wrote. Final Score: Calgary 6 - Edmonton 2. Tifu, Yelle and Pyatt get '6' ratings. Simon gets a '5' and a warning which he admits was deserved.

* Jarome Iginla (2g, '8')
** Matthew Lombardi (2g, '8')

That gives us 101 points for the season but only 5th place and we get to face Colorado in the first round of the playoffs who only had 2 points more than us. Iginla finishes fifth in league scoring. Phaneuf had 30 points and was +21 in his rookie year along with a 7.69 AvR. He better be Rookie of the Year. More on this stuff later.

As soon as the last game of the regular season was played, Chicago fired its General Manager, Justin Bilodeau.
