Total score for 2002 was 72 - helped a lot that the Redskins were very profitable.

Some offseason moves for the Redskins:
* Re-hired Coach Kent Burroughs. He was the best talent available. * Hired new scout T.J. Moss. Young guy who should get better. * Boosted ticket prices a bit. I like nice round numbers. And my team salary is only going to get higher. After importing the draft, it looks like all of our supplemental draftees are sure-fire first rounders, with the exception of Heath Shuler and Rob Nielsen - although Nielsen has "breakout player" written all over him. Chris Coles will probably go first - he looks like the most talented kid on the board. I've already re-named the guys who had problematic names. |

Free agency was a drag - as it probably will be for the next 3-4 seasons, since we're starting from scratch here. On to the draft.
Washington picks 20th. There's every possibility that I won't even get a sniff of any of the draftees we submitted. Picks 1 through 19 go as follows: Code:
Walt Church, Brian Mitchell, and Darren Woodson are still on the board, as are Nielsen and Shuler. I figure I can grab Nielsen or Shuler in the next round, and I don't desperately need a QB right now. The choice boils down to Woodson or Mitchell. As much as I'm sentimental about taking Mitchell, a good CB would be more help right now. I take Woodson. The remainder of the first round is: Code:
Mitchell is still available to me in Round 2. So are Nielsen and Shuler. Shuler will probably last to Round 3. I'd like a good backup QB, but I gamble, and take Mitchell. Surprisingly, Nielsen is still around in Round 3. No brainer. He's a Redskin. I take Shuler in Round 4. There's really not much other great talent in the draft - I'll have to plug the holes with whatever's leftover. In Round 5, I select P Lincoln Slutzker out of Central Florida. Hey, he's been the top-rated guy on the draft board the whole time... and at this stage of the game, a good punter could actually come in handy. Round 6 gives me C Danny Ragsdale from Pitt. He sucks. In Round 7, its ILB Johnny Rhodes from Virginia Tech. Local kid. Woo hoo. That's it. I sign some cannon fodder to fill the roster, and then it's off to training camp. |

Darren Woodson is a corner? When did that happen?
Boba Fett for the Cowboys, eh? Well, we certainly did need to go defense. Hopefully he'll help the team a bunch...

Rob Nielsen is backup to no man. I curse your starting QB to season ending injury! Curse him I do!
Edit: And did Payton and Miller wind up healing with the Bears, by chance? Poor guys. Last edited by Coffee Warlord : 10-27-2003 at 08:58 PM. |

I'll probably end up trading Nielsen after this season anyway, as long as Jurgenson is healthy and capable. I drafted him knowing that he was the best talent available, and that he'd be worth something in the future. After training camp, Miller has healed, but Payton is still out for 19 weeks. If I were managing the Bears, I'd put him on IR. |

Or maybe I just really wanted to have two stud CB's on the Redskins. Actually, Darrell Green doesn't seem to be nearly as good as I had hoped he would be... so Woodson will end up being my "shut down" CB, and Green may eventually be relegated to nickel status after a few seasons. |

2003 Wild Card Round Preview
Cincinnati, Houston, Moe's Tavern, and St. Louis have byes this week, with the Reservoir Dogs and the Maroons enjoying home field advantage throughout the playoffs. Baltimore is at New England. The Patriots are a one point favorite. I think that spread should be larger, but New England is missing WR Paul Revere (shoulder), DE Sam Adams (adductor muscle), and MLB Drew Blizzi (MCL). Cleveland is a six point favorite at Kansas City - the Chiefs are only there because the AFC West HAS to send somebody, and that division is totally weak. The Browns are missing G Ray Brown (strained calf). New York is a one point favorite at Detroit. The Giants are without QB Phil Simms for 4 weeks with a strained foot ligament (looks like he was hurt in the last game of the season - rotten luck for the Giants). Detroit is missing MLB Chris Spielman (ankle surgery), and WR Mel Gray is listed as questionable. San Francisco is a three point favorite at Washington. Bad weather works to the Redskins advantage, as they have the stronger running game. However, Washington is without DT Dave Butz and WR Art Monk. The Niners are without DE Dana Stubblefield. |

The Cowboys missed the playoffs again? With the great numbers put up by Emmitt and Roger Dodger I was hoping for a good season. Our defense must be awful...

Keep in mind that the NFC East is the only division to have every team fully stocked with "seed" players, thus making it the most difficult to compete in. The Cowboys are probably much better than their 9-7 record indicates. FWIW - MLB Lee Roy Jordan missed 5 games due to a separated shoulder. Other than that, I see no substantial missed time due to injury on any Dallas "star" players. |

Well...Byars domintated again...but Cunningham went down for at least 8 games and my backup was the worse QB in the league...lovely!!!
Looks like that was difference for my Eagles...am I right?? Last edited by johnnyshaka : 10-28-2003 at 01:11 PM. |

Upon further inspection... Dallas was 14th in Rushing Defense, and 18th in Passing Defense. Better than the Redskins in both categories, and better than New York in Passing Defense (the Giants had the league's 3rd best Rushing Defense).
Dallas had the league's best rushing offense (Washington was a close second), and the 13th ranked passing offense. The big difference might have been turnover margin. Washington led the league with +24. Dallas was -3. New York and Washington were 4th and 5th in Red Zone defense. Dallas was 20th. |

9-7 is reasonable. Just need to pick up another good defensive player (preferably a DE or DT) and we should be in the playoff mix...

Let's see... Sonny Liston missed 11 games with a ruptured adductor muscle. That didn't help. Cunningham missed 8 games. In the 8 he started, he threw 6TD's and 3INT's, and had a rating of 87.4 (not great, but better than his backup Ryan Monroe, who put up a rating of 45.5). The -7 turnover margin probably didn't help much, either. Other than that, the Eagles were statistically similar to their divisional rivals - just bad luck with Cunningham being out is my guess. |

2003 Wild Card Round Results
Baltimore upset New England by a score of 23-17. (I'm not keeping box scores and game logs for every game - so no details... sorry) Cleveland beat Kansas City 31-27. Detroit beat New York 24-9. Washington got embarassed by San Francisco, 41-24. So much for their rushing advantage. Roger Craig had 166 yards to John Riggins' 73. |

2003 Conference Championship Preview
Cincinnati is at home against Houston. The Reservoir Dogs look strong, and are 4 point favorites. The Oilers are still the defending champs, but can they overcome what may have been an ill-advised trade of WR Haywood Jeffries? Moe's Tavern hosts St. Louis. The Brawlers are also 4 point favorites, but will Haywood Jeffries make the difference for the Maroons? |

2003 Conference Championship Results/Super Bowl Preview
Road Warriors On The Way To The Super Bowl Upsets ruled the day, as both the St. Louis Maroons and the Houston Oilers overcame the odds on the road and earned trips to the title game. St. Louis upended the Moe's Tavern Brawlers 32-29. The Houston Oilers beat the Cincinnati Reservoir Dogs 27-24. Both teams will return to the Super Bowl in a re-match of the league's first championship game, which the Oilers won by a score of 26-20. The Oilers traded star wideout Haywood Jeffries on draft day to the Maroons in order to draft LB Winfred Newkirk and bolster their defense. Newkirk had only two tackles in four games with the Oilers in his rookie season. Jeffries was the Maroons' leading receiver, with 108 catches for 1433 yards and 8 TD's. |

2003 Super Bowl Results
The Curse of Haywood Jeffries In what is sure to be remembered as a game for the ages, the St. Louis Maroons narrowly defeated the Houston Oilers, 21-20. The Maroons avenged their loss to the Oilers in last year's title game, and WR Haywood Jeffries exacted his revenge over a draft-day trade that sent him to St. Louis. Jeffries becomes the first player in league history to wear two Super Bowl rings. |
