After a quick search I think this is what Rainmaker was referring to. Looks like all charges were eventually dropped.

Seeing a lot of this on the right,

1 Fuck you. We'll never unite with Dems after the past four years.

2 If Dems pursue impeachment it will make it impossible to unite the country.

There's like this weird cognitive dissonance of "I hate you" and (faux?) vulnerability that I don't entirely understand. It's like they've seen what works on them from genuinely emotional and empathetic people or those who want to have reasonable arguments and just want to weaponize it right back in completely insincere ways.

#2 is the go to line right now, especially for the elected members in Congress who have been suckling Trump this entire time.

I struggle with this too. I read a great analysis in the Reddit comments of all places that pointed out how folks conditioned by conservative media alternate strictly between RIGHTEOUS RAGE and ABSOLUTE VICTIM because that's what triggers the most powerful emotional receptors in their brain. It's comparable to a drug response, and there's literally no payoff to having anything like a moderate discussion. As much as they whine about wanting respect, or double standards, or free speech, the actual act of whining is giving them a positive emotional reward. They may genuinely & righteously desire & deserve those things, but most crucially if these folks were given every single desire they could think of, they would absolutely still find something else to whine about, because they have been conditioned to do so. The crueltywhining is the point

Of course, non-conservative media of every and any stripe is trying their best to condition everyone as well, and perhaps doing an even better job in some regards. Likewise left-leaning folks are surely just as suceptible to media manipulation as the who lean right, but those qualifications aside, it's also entirely obvious that modern conservative media is its own rabid animal.

They were dropped after the DoJ lost their first round of cases and saw the writing on the wall. Did make their lives hell for a year by forcing them to and from DC under the threat of 60 years in prison.

Dramatically different responses from the justice department.

Agree 100%. There are laws on the books that more than cover what happened at the Capitol. They just aren't enforced for certain people.

We also don't need more surveillance. These people posted their plans openly on the internet. I can go to Parler or that Donald site and find hundreds of posts threatening people and planning to commit crimes. It was no secret. But again, they were given a pass because of who they are.

If you want to deter this activity, you have to punish people who do it. Not create more draconian laws that will only be used on minorities.

There are some (though I haven't seen the argument) suggesting that they would only need a simple majority to convict if they had the trial after Trump is out of office. The only historical reference we have on this doesn't support that (a Secretary of War that was impeached after he resigned, but didn't get a conviction with 2/3 majority). I wonder what their legal argument is. I am also wishing I went to law school because I enjoy this stuff too much.

May I also mention that law school is not necessarily what you may expect. It's a lot of case reading and learning the tools to use precedent to argue for almost anything .

The headline seems clickbaitey when the article contains this paragraph:

Quote:
The Utah demonstrators are unlikely to serve prison time, said the Salt Lake county district attorney, Sim Gill. Though they would get at least five years if convicted as charged, criminal cases often end with a plea to lesser counts.

So the bar for the 25th Amendment according to Pence is “more unstable”.

And here I was thinking just plain old unstable would be enough.

I believe Lawrence Tribe mentioned that since "removal from office" is the penalty for conviction in the Senate, once Trump leaves office the penalty becomes moot and therefore a trial would not take place.

I'm torn on this. The idea that you funnel the herd into one pen so you can watch them is a valid point versus dissipating them as sleeper cells all around.

Guns & ammo were already in short supply. I would have thought anyone inclined to have a weapon would have bought one already but apparently not.

LA Gun Stores See Spike In Business After Capitol Riot – CBS Los Angeles
Quote:
BURBANK (CBSLA) – Gun stores in the Los Angeles area were seeing a drastic increase in sales following Wednesday’s violent breach of the U.S. Capitol building.

Several area gun stores were seeing an uptick in first-time buyers. Redstone Firearms in Burbank told CBSLA it saw a sudden 40% increase in people looking to purchase a gun, take safety classes and shoot at their range.

“All of a sudden the text messages and the phone calls and the emails began to skyrocket,” Redstone Firearms co-owner Geneva Solomon told CBSLA Thursday “We woke up and just had a lot of different sales online, and today we’ve had an influx of business that we typically wouldn’t see on a Thursday.”

So, which reason do you think wins out? They bought up guns to be ready for more violence, or they bought them up expecting Biden to immediately outlaw guns now that they know he will be president? Gun and ammo sales skyrocketed in the Obama years because they were always afraid that guns were going to be band.

MSNBC talking head said VPs don't get the lifetime Secret Service protection. And considering Pelosi's and McConnell's houses were vandalized a week ago, I'm okay they they want to spend some tax payer money to provide additional protection to the higher risk folks.

I assume Pence and McConnell already own and know how to use firearms. I would suggest Pelosi get and learn how to use a weapon for a just in case.

I posted Biden's gun policies from his site about 2-3 weeks ago. What I remember is he does want to ban assault weapons, have additional checks etc. He also wants "smart guns", I'm okay with the option but wouldn't want it to be compulsory.

There was already a run up on gun buying last year. I think much of that was because of Biden's policies and early unknowns about the flu. But this latest article indicates the latest surge (at least in LA area) is because of the thugs rioting in DC.

So my guess is buying guns in case of more violence due to Wed not because of Biden's policies.

FWIW, low odds there will be shootouts. But good chance there will be violence here and there.
