I really dislike the Charmin bears. I've probably seen a few cumulative hours of this bizarre animated dingleberry-based drama by now, and I think that's enough.

RIP Ralphie May.

Some really bad stuff had come out about him in the last year or so, but it's still a shame to see someone with so much potential just let themselves go.

What was the bad stuff?

I hate it when porn stars can't decide on a fucking name and end up with 10 different non de plumes on IAFD.

I just finished watching the finale of the second season (technically the third since there was a horrible season many years ago) of Australian Survivor and, like the first season, I cried like a baby during the final immunity challenge. I have watched almost all of the US seasons and haven't experienced anything like the same level of emotion.

BTW Jonathan LaPaglia is our version of Jeff Probst and has done a fantastic job of hosting.

I feel like an asshole for saying this, and when it comes to it they do a job that most people wouldn't have the balls to do, but at their core, most small town fire departments seem like clubhouses for adults.

There's a certain ring of truth to that (says the guy who has several relatives that are/have been part of small town fire departments).

There's other elements of course -- as you fairly alluded to -- but that aspect can't really be reasonable denied either.

(though I'd argue 'hunting club' more than "clubhouse" perhaps)

I should make clear what brought this thought on. I live in a town that's about 15 blocks long and 5 blocks deep, so not very big at all. There are rural areas yes, and there are 2 adjacent towns that are even smaller, but we're book ended on all sides by bigger towns. At one point we had 4 different fire companies. About 10 years ago 3 of them consolidated into one state of the art new building which housed them all easily. I suppose it's a big thing which fire company you belong to, and the usual politics and what not. But now one of the companies wants to leave and restart their own, with a new building and new trucks and it just seems like a senseless waste of money. And quite frankly we don't need 3 friggin fire companies.

I've seen the first half of that (the consolidation) where I grew up.

The next phase (the breakup) is pretty much inevitable. It's a power thing, human nature.

Yeah, It is, but there's something weirder about than just human nature. It's almost like kids and clubhouses, as I alluded to in my first post.

The other disconcerting thing is that I've seen guys who really had a passion for the "job", put in quotes only because these are all volunteer houses, leave because of the bullshit.

Huh. Hadn't heard that but then again I don't follow the lives of comedians all that closely.

He tweeted in December of 2013 that when he dies he didn't want people to cry but to make jokes about him. Go find that tweet and read the responses starting on October 7th. Some funny stuff, just as he wanted.

I can't begin to understand how the firefighter shift thing works. But 48hours on and 96 off seems unhealthy and a taxpayer waste. But I'm sure it isn't.

I'm just making the distinction between the clubhouse atmosphere (which can occur with both volunteer as well as paid firefighters incidentally) and the actual reason that underlies why consolidation like that seems likely to eventually lead to separation.

I've seen the latter occur with a number of similar entities (law enforcement, schools, even city/county government or sub-units of them), in the end it comes down to having more people want to have power/control than there are positions that afford them control. So at some point there's a push to separate & create more of those positions.

Neighbor explained his time as a volunteer firefighter (even though they got paid, if they volunteered enough) and this is exactly what it sounded like to me. Clubhouse is a perfect description.

The Gasbuddy app is great. I usually stay away from these types of things but this has saved me money on multiple occasions since I downloaded it over the summer. I dont even use it to find low gas prices, I just wait for the emails warning me of impending gas price hikes in my area. It's been spot on at least a half-dozen times in the past few months. Gas here was $2.05 yesterday and I got an email saying that within 35 hours prices would rise to $2.49 +/- 7 cents. I went out and got gas last night. At 11am, my wife texted that gas is now $2.49.

It's too late (or early?) for me to explain what I do for a living but I'm damned good at it. Once in a rare while, I end up having to prove that.

There ARE some advantages to being around before computers and knowing how to do stuff by hand, like we did it EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. back in olden times.

And do NOT fucking tell me that your damned software won't do something that a rural HS educated motherfucker has been doing since back when we had to make changes with WhiteOut.

I'm helping oversee a major project for my company. We have been trying to get data out of a database that we are not allowed to access, so have been utilizing another team to give us this information. On Friday, we found a gap in their query that meant an entire segment of data was being omitted erroneously. The gap was fixed, and we moved on.

Someone out in the field changed things on Saturday, and we identified another gap in the query. They fixed this gap as well. They also inexplicably rolled back the correction we made on Friday.

I have spent multiple hours today trying to figure out why this error would still be in play after we fixed it. I don't know what made me think to ask if we were still looking for the error from Friday, but good lord.

The response I got: "Do you think it would be helpful to put that fix back in?"

It looks like you're pretty much right on the nose, since they appear to contain Sorbitol, a 'sugar alcohol' apparently made mostly made from corn syrup. Someone would probably need a couple different advanced scientific degrees to tell us why that is/isn't considered an added sugar and whether it's any more or less 'healthy'.

I hate knowing that my brain simply can't do what it could do when I was younger.

If I'm feeling the difference at 50, not sure I want to get to 60.

Leaving shortly on a 4-day road trip with the wife.
May God have mercy on us all.

To add insult to unspeakable suffering, on Saturday I get to endure Ole Miss v Arkansas in person, complete with an Ole Miss backup QB making his first start. That's kind of the college football equivalent of watching a mediocre semi-pro hockey team play a really bad semi-pro hockey team. And, hey, it only costs me hundreds for the "pleasure".

Whee.

I do believe this sorbitol is the cause for certain ailments that have befallen me over the past week 2 two and sadly it appears that these delicious treats will have to be eliminated from my diet. Ironic that thesloppy was the one to break the news to me.

Your tone is bringing to mind the phrases 'anal leakage' and 'fecal urgency' from the days when they introduced Olestra.

I had a similar experience when I got hooked on shit with Sucralose/Splenda in it...which it turns out was supposed to be a pesticide, but was accidentally tasted during testing and proved so sweet that they made it a sweetener. Eventually I conceded that as horrible as sugar is health-wise, almost every artificial sweetener seems to be even more of a threat and I'm probably better off just eating stuff made with straight up sugar....the irony is even that's actually getting harder and harder to do, as everything's got 15 kinds of synthetic sugars or sugar derivatives or some kind of sugar sawdust in it these days.

It's bad dude. Everything you mentioned, along with the feeling of being stabbed with a sharp knife from the inside out. I knew something had to be up, cause those things were addicting on whole other level.

I guess this is a random thought.

I think that Sports should follow the same rules as the Screen Actors Guild. The first player with a unique name gets the name and then subsequent players with the same name need to use either a middle initial or a stage first name. I was reading the box score of the Suns game last night and Mike James had 12 points. And all I can think is, isn't that guy about 40 years old right now?. But no it's another guy named Mike James.
