Oh geez....you know, all this time I thought the graphics (textures, stadiums, playe rmodels, logos, etc.) Were done by David Winter himself. Now, he references some "artist".

Which means one thing. Those player models, logos, textures, stadium graphics, etc....he PAID someone for that work...let that sink in a for a moment. Someone actually was able to pass those models and textures off as professional work. Scary.

The serious answer: in the early days of electronics, you'd turn the device on. If it didn't smoke (or catch fire or anything bad like that), it passed the test.

For programmers, it means "I ran the app and it didn't crash". Very, very basic testing, no attempt to break it, use it much, or do much more than activate the feature for a second.

The question then becomes--do they check every logo in the game provided by this "artist" (who seems like a pretty smooth operator if he got paid for his "work") or just assume that the Yellow Jacket was the only improper image there?

Hahaha. So, this guy thinks that all he needs to do is "Does it compile? Does it load up? Yes and yes. Another fine day's work."

I really hope he does deeper into his programming style. This is priceless.

The answer to what they should do and what Daivd Winter will do are two different answers I suspect.

(They should just throw out every logo provdied by this "artist" and get new ones)

I think at this point I'd pay Matrix $20 just for the laughs I've gotten from this thread alone. I've spent more time in this thread than watching 2-3 movies I'd say, and I've definately gotten more laughs than in the theater!

I've heard that the turducken customization piece is working fine. You can have anywhere from one to 73 legs on the beast to give out as prizes for the players of the game on Thanksgiving day. However, I think the calendar is messed up because Thanksgiving appears to always be on the second Monday in October...

Unbelievable thread and we are barely into this year. This thread will surpass the reference thread for sure because that game won't be released until Mid March.

If people stop pointing out the bugs in the video and screenshots, we can actually see a release and the madness that will ensue when people actually buy it.

I am by no means defending him in this train-wreck. But smoke-tests are pretty standard procedure. The standard procedure would be to run tests on his development machine while developing. If that looks good, then it gets built on a "clean" build machine. He would then quickly try that build out to make sure that it runs. The testers would then be given that build to test extensively. Nothing he said is out of the ordinary.

Assuming that this IS a recent bug, it is understandable for David miss it during his testing. However, I have doubts as to whether this is a recent bug.

And... recent bug or not, they are doing WAY, WAY, WAY too much development for this to be anywhere near release. Any software engineer knows that you have to freeze the code long before it is ready for release. I seriously doubt they have any formal regression testing.

LOL!

But for some reason I thought that once Matrix games got a hold of it, there would be no more games with release dates. But now they have morphed into Wintervalley zombies bent on telling false promises and fabrications.

Someone else in this thread wondered if Matrix is going to take a hit for taking on this game. At first I thought that was a little far fetched, but now I don't know. While I am not sure how many of the buyers frequent the forums, they will not buy another Matrix game if Maximum Football is ever purchased. I seriously doubt he is going to be committed to squashing any bugs. Instead he will pretend those are features in the Maximum Football experience.

I found this looking for something witty.

The CFL Sock Museum

I hope the "artist" didn't steal any of these.

Or put the burden on you to fix/deal with it. The game crashes whenever a team scores over 50 points? Well, then design a ball-control offense and a strong defense and no one will ever score over 50 points.

Fast running backs can always make big yardage to the outside? Then make a playbook that keeps them running inside if you don't want unrealistic results.

Maximum customizability is not just a privilege. It is a responsbility.

After enjoying this thread for the past 33 pages I thought I'd post and rant a little.

I would say that if Matrix is using any copyrighted images in screenshots, since those are technically advertisements, that's breaking the law.

I'm an indie game developer, I've been following MF since it was first posted about on football-gaming.com 5 years ago, and I have to say that this will be a fucking trainwreck.

Virtually everything you can do wrong in releasing a game they've done it.

Multiple missed release dates spanning YEARS, the developer insulting other products, the developer getting pissy with customers, the developer's WIFE coming on the forums expecting the customers to feel sorry for a man creating a game to release to make money off of. I'm sorry but when you decide to charge for your game you're not longer in hobbyist territory, run with the big dogs or get the fuck out of the way. The developer has posted PUBLICLY that he almost quit on the project 2-3 times in the past month, you don't tell your customers that you idiot.

Actively working on the game code all the way up til release date. Uh, NO.

Showing videos and screenshots without screening them first for errors, bugs, or other things that may cast a negative reflection on the game. Completely bushleague.

Multiple other comments DW had no business making public.

Oh, and for those of you who don't know what happened with his CFL game. The way it was explained to me was that CFL '99 was released barely playable, DW got mad at all the negative criticism, promised a patch to fix all of the issues, then out of nowhere removed the game from the online store and labeled it as "SOLD OUT". Next thing you know he's working on a new game. Based on his posts I would doubt his maturity level has improved to the point to expect anything else this time around. Even if Matrix put into their publishing contract with him that he has to support the game for a certain amount of time, he can still release crap patches and find a way to wiggle out of it.

I've really tried to be supportive of DW through all the delays and missed release dates because I believe that Indie game dev's should support other indie's. As soon as he ripped the text sim guys that went out of the window. Pompous ass.

I'm just watching and shaking my head at all of this. I'm really hoping I'm wrong, I'll gladly eat crow to see another football game hit the market that is enjoyable to play. I think that's a pipe dream at this point, atleast for MF.

I was looking at a few of the other Matrix forums as I have generally really enjoyed their wargames. It seems that Maximum Football isn't the only trainwreck they're dealing with.

I think it has already been established that GoA will move in earnest once Frank has finished his duties on Black Powder Wars: Battles Of Napoleon, so I guess once BoW goes gold, then we can hope for some more news here....

I was going to post something similar last night, but then figured that nothing is really going on and won't be until Frank finishes work on BON. At this point, I am simply hoping that GOA is very close to completion and once Frank returns, it will be a matter of some minor teweaking before it is released. This has been the strangest developement path that I can remember for any game. Considering that I paid in full for the game 3 1/2 years ago, I think I have been very patient.

We recently got a new build from Frank on this between his other projects and it included quite number of very good additional improvements from the planned changes list. We're not done, but just wanted you all to know that it is moving along.

Regards,

Well it's nice to know that some progress is being made; especially since I had assumed that no work was being done until BON got finished. I will continue to wait patiently for what I hope will be a great strategic WW1 game.

Actually you could say that this game is quite possably one of the most authentic out there.

We wait hours, days, weeks, for a few moments of frezied activity.

I think Maximum Football is really a secret code passing system for terrorists. Its the only logical explanation for everything.

The down and distance system alone could be communicating troop movements.

This post had me crackin' up for five minutes! It reminds me of Coming to America and the Big Mic:
"We're not McDonald's, we're McDowells. They got the golden arches. I've got the golden arcs. They got the Big Mac. We got the Big Mic. We both have 2 all beef pattties, special sauce, but they have a sesame seed bun. Our buns have no seeds."

A few things in this thread that need to be addressed so I'll try to do them all in one post.

1. Midwave. Yes, you've emailed me about the indoor league you have permission to do artwork for. I am sure if you can get Matrix and myself a copy of the agreement (a signed letter would be best) then I'm sure we can accomodate you putting those logos on the board. As long as we're satisfied permission has been granted.

2. Okay, my ignorance about US College is showing here so forgive me. I thought Georgia Tech used a bull dog logo. When my artist presented these graphics to me I had no reason to suspect it was close to any other logo. The bee, although modified, is probably too close for use so we'll pull that out. Thanks for making us aware of that.

3. Shaggyra: Yes, this wasn't noticed until now. I certainly didn't at anyrate.

4. Toddzilla: I was asking him to explain more clearly his point about George Tech. No reference to logos was made, no reference to team names was made. No reference to anything other than a school was made. Hence my comment.

I was not going to play Georgia Tech anyway so if you can just leave it in there we wont use it and you wont have any problems that way we can go ahead and play the game. I almost took off from school today fake sick but I only started to cough a little to set it all up and now that I am home for lunch it looks like I was right about not being sick, so I will just wait to get sick to play and will keep checking when I can go buy it.
