Good analogy. Almost every picture with "FAIL" on it would be funnier without the "FAIL"

It must derive from some mix of someone's lonely need to make a mark (a literal, physical mark) in order to take faux ownership of something and feel a part of it. A bit of that special brand of blunt humorless cruelty inherent to the internet generation (not enough to post someone's failing. You need to do it with BIG RED LETTERS). And people just not being that subtle in their humor--and assuming that without a big FAIL!!!!!! on the image, no one would get it.

Not, of course, referring to the posters here, who just post the images that come to them pre-failed.

Oh. You can't tell from the pic that those are the clear plastic discs, not just normal blank cds.

I think in most cases the FAIL on the image is because it specifically comes from failblog.org. When seeing the images here in standalone fashion I would agree with you, but since that's the whole point of the website it makes more sense when visiting it, to me at least.

Really this is just the Internet version of every annoying catch-phrase that people use. It is the print version of "git 'er done", or "here's your sign". Seemingly the catch-phrase makes anything more funny though its inclusion. At least that is the theory.

It is also the equivalent of a 6-year old hearing a joke that made them laugh and then trotting out every variation of the joke that leads to the same punch-line.

Worse than the 'fail' images are some forums where everyone is racing into the thread to be the first (or the 100th) person to post 'fail' to someones opening post, most the time without ever even reading anything but the title.

That just changes the funny from simply "lol vagina repair" to "Christ the King Maternity Clinic is the place offering that???"
