I hope they don't fuck up the build to Mania.

No Way Out suddenly became a buyable PPV.

2 Title Matches, 2 Elimination Chamber Matches. Who goes on to Mania?

Not sure. It's just odd that somebody could tear a pec, come back early, and not lose any mass.

He must have a really good trainer.

I'm sure Congress has better things to do than review performance enhancing drug usage in a non-competitive pseudo-sport with predetermined winners.

...or do they?

Interesting, and somewhat confusing to me. It's not as though the CW has much in the way of hit shows, Smackdown has been their highest rated show other than Next Top Model.

NEW YORK — Pro wrestling is getting smacked down by the CW network.

The long-running "Friday Night Smackdown" won't be airing on the CW this fall, the network and World Wrestling Entertainment said late Thursday. In separate announcements, they stated that "after a successful decade of `Smackdown,'" they had agreed to conclude their partnership after the 2007-08 season.

No reasons were offered.

WWE added that it began talks with other networks after the CW's exclusive period to negotiate a renewal ended Jan. 31. Although no details were disclosed for a possible new home for the show, candidates might include NBC Universal, whose USA cable channel already carries "WWE Raw," and MyNetworkTV, where some affiliates aired "Smackdown" when they were UPN stations.

The two-hour "Smackdown" premiered on then-fledgling UPN in fall 1999 as strategic counterprogramming on Thursdays. "Smackdown" gave UPN a foothold on that night of bruising prime-time competition, but even as a ratings contender, it proved to be a sometimes uncomfortable fit with UPN's image.

When UPN, owned by CBS, merged with Warner Bros.' WB in 2006, "Smackdown" seemed no less out of place on the resulting CW network.

Sounds like the TNA PPV in Greenville has turned into a near disaster for them, with less than 1500 tickets actually sold. They've resorted to "papering" the crowd with comps and are still reportedly having problems (literally unable to give the tickets away, although trying to give them to Bi-Lo corporate contacts probably meant they were missing their audience anyway).

It's pretty obvious they missed the price point badly, as the $150 price pretty much killed them. Similar problems happened with the event last year outside Atlanta but were helped by pretty good walk-up sales & some group purchases in the final week or two. But how bad is the PR from giving away dozens or even hundreds of tickets that someone else paid anywhere from $79 to $225 for? I'd feel pretty screwed if I was the sucker who paid the top dollar. Meanwhile though, early sales in Norfolk for the March PPV are running well ahead of expectations. Different markets, different price tolerance, which most people could have told them well ahead of the results.

And, also meanwhile, the bill that would kill all pro wrestling in Georgia was introduced in the legislature earlier this week & the committee behind it all has pretty much blown off the very recommendations they requested from the industry. Looks like this is a done deal barring a miracle (which happened to save the business here a few years back). And that leaves SC as the nearest location for wrestling for me, so the dismal response to the TNA event has more concerned that it would otherwise.

Report by TNAWrestlingNews.com Staff on 02/09/2008 at 09:37 PM

As noted earlier tonight here on TNAWrestlingNews.com, former WWE and TNA star "Razor Ramon" Scott Hall has apparently taken up WWE's rehab offer after a recent breakdown in Puerto Rico. We reported that Hall is staying at the same rehab center former WWE star Jake "The Snake" Roberts is currently situated at, which is in Atlanta.

Also, Dave Meltzer is reporting that current WWE RAW star Ron 'Farooq' Simmons has also taken up WWE's rehab offer. Simmons is currently staying at a rehab center in Atlanta (we believe it's the same facility that Hall and Roberts are currently at).

Best coverage of this is probably at http://www.georgiawrestlinghistory.com/gaec/home.html

There's links there for the full set of rules proposed, as well as information about the committee that promoters were asked to form to make improvements to the new rules (which the entertainment commission has since failed to even read & has their original rules introduced to be passed into law later this month).

Basically it's a set of state board rules & regulations that treat pro wrestling as though it were a legitimate competitive event such as boxing or MMA and includes provisions that raise the cost of promoting an event far beyond what any independents could ever hope to come close to and to a point that both the WWE and TNA have already said would prevent them from even considering Georgia for any future events.

It's a program set up by the WWE last year just before the Benoit tragedy. Basically, any wrestler who has ever been under contract with the WWE is eligible for treatment for alcohol and/or drugs with the WWE paying for the entire treatment.

Meanwhile, I'm glad to see that B.G. & Bullet Bob are playing the patriotic heroes against those evil foreigners Tomko & A.J.

Oh. Wait ...

I swear, does anybody with a clue actually look at the scripts before this stuff airs?

Meanwhile, it looks like they managed to paper the crowd sufficiently to at least fill most of the bottom section, but the sudden increase in audio to cover the quiet nature of the crowd was awfully obvious.

edit to add:
Armstrongs vs Tomko/Styles - odd finish, not any of the ones anybody expected at least in terms of how they got there

All in all a kind of peculiar PPV last night.

Most of the results were as expected -- Angle retained, Tomko/Styles retained, Kong retained, Lethal recaptured the X Division title -- but a lot of the routes taken to the results were different than expected.

-- No Kip James turn, instead it's a B.G. injury
-- Kong wins, but has to get outside help to do it
-- Dudleys lose & the X Division is saved, but it's via a virtuoso performance by Lethal and minimal input by the Machine Guns. Considering they're the top selling merchandise in the company and they're featured on the advance promotion for the next PPV, having them disappear last night seems like an odd choice
-- Angle wins with interference ... from Tomko ! WTF? And that's after a Red Bull speed sequence of attempted interferences that saw involvement by Karen, Joe, a ref bump, and A.J. all to bring us to that point.
-- Booker & Roode was indecisive with a countout finish in the parking lot, one that probably weakens Booker without really putting Roode over as a threat (although he's at least a little more heelish)
-- Steiner wins thanks to a distraction by his newest freak, a 6'2" former WWE trainee. I guess TNA found the "Amazon sized attractive black female" they were reportedly looking for. Probably didn't have to look too hard, since she has worked with Kong in Japan recently.
-- Abyss wins, although I'd call the barbed wire match pretty lackluster.
-- Eric retains the drinking title. Naturally he does so in a wrestling match. Obviously the next step would be to determine a wrestling title with a drinking contest ... and since Rhino returned last night that isn't out of the realm of possibility.

And in the next couple of weeks we can look forward to Kurt & Karen renewing their wedding vows and (reportedly) a NASCAR match complete with NASCAR drivers both in the ring & on commentary.

Yeppers. Must see TV there.

If TNA isn't the "wrestling alternative" what the hell is it's purpose? RAW once again delivered a main event (Michaels/Hardy) that trumps anything going on with TNA.

Who are they trying to appeal to? Fans who long for the days of the WCW circa 2000?

Wrestling needs an alternative, but that alternative needs to give us something the WWE is not. TNA just isn't doing that, it's putting on a crappy, low-rent version of the WWE.

To stroke the egos of Carter, Jarrett, Russo, and Mantel apparently.

Even worse, maybe, is what appears to be the new company tag line that debuted after the end of the PPV last night -- TNA Wrestling: Cross The Line

What line would that be exactly?
Logical booking? Clean finishes? Focus on wrestling instead of sideshows?

That Michaels/Hardy match was a great one tonight. Its a great thing when a guy like HBK will put over the next in line superstars. This win could make Hardy a legitimate Main Eventer.

Hardy now has clean TV wins over HHH and HBK in the last 2 months. I never thought they'd trust him with a main event spot, but he's there.

This angle hasn't been done very well, which is disappointing, since WWE has been on a streak of good celebrity utilization (K-fed, Trump, Steve-O).

But the biggest travesty of the night is all of us getting robbed of the Shiek/Volcoff v. Windham/Rotundo Wrestlemania I rematch. I'm sure WWE's insurance wouldn't cover the Iron Shiek or something, but I'm still pissed off.

Hmm ... wonder why Batista is suddenly so much smaller than he used to be?

Also, speaking of "celebrity" appearances, gotta love the backstage story about Fairplay propositioning Shelly Martinez for, umm, a "three way dance" last night in Norfolk.

referring back to last week:

Ive have been growing more and more impressed with Maria. her Mic skills are excellent, her acting was above average for WWE, and her look is evolving. Of all the girls I think she is doing the best job and Santino is a proven mic artist so keeping them together for some time may be a bonus.

according to PWI the Show/Floyd segment was almost a riot when Floyds posse tried showing how tough they were and the wrestlers went after them. Shane was legit knocked down and pissed off backstage. there is a lot of heat with Floyd and his crew

Looks like Georgia has dodged another legislative bullet, as the state Senate passed an alternate bill that removed most of the unworkable provisions of a proposal that would pro wrestling under the control of the former boxing commission. It calls for a $20/year license for wrestlers & proof of a basic physical, and still allows blood as long as they've got current certification saying they have no communicable diseases.

Here's the wrestling take on the story.

And included in today's legislative recap is some of the mild chuckles about the bill's passage (including a comment from the sponsor that "wrestling is as real as the Rules Committee")

I think that the brawl on RAW may have just saved the Mayweather - Big Show feud.

Isn't this a good thing? People are phrasing this as a criticism of past steroid use, but between this and the Hardy suspsension, it seems like the WWE has a more effective substance abuse policy than any of the major sports (and especially ROH or TNA, who don't do anything).

I don't think it's so much meant to be criticized as a "bad thing" as it is such striking visible evidence of how significant a difference the usage was for some of the guys.
