This probably doesn't need its own thread (like a "Meet a Chief" thread), but I will be in NYC November 13-16 and attending the Pats-Giants game that Sunday. I thought I would see if anyone was around out there if they wanted to meet up for a drink or whatever.

I hate the market confusion that invariably happens by adding a rep.
If you there is more business that we aren't getting to, how about add some back end support and free up busy work from your alpha dogs and let them go hunt.(Or farm as the case may be depending on industry) |

I had to laugh at this. This parallels my day today. I was the #1 regional manager going into this week. I booked more business this week than any other regional manager has booked this year to date (other than myself). The note I get from my boss? "When you update status in the database, you need to make sure and add a comment. I should not have to remind you again." Meanwhile, his boss (our owner), "Great work on these projects! You will be plied with alcohol and showered with praise at the tradeshow next week." The hell of it is, I have no issue with updating the sales database (the busy work), but don't play gotcha with the one project that I updated status on, but did not put in a comment for (and the comment I would have made was one they told me to stop putting in in 3 months ago, but then changed their mind two weeks ago, and they really want it in there now). I got sidetracked because I took a call that led to me landing one of the projects that came in this week. EDIT: I apologize for the venting, but my boss is in rare form this week. HA. They have barns that house a bunch of little shops. I'd walked by the computer place hundreds of times and always just dismissed it as old, used crap. Until my video card died last year and I needed old, used crap. Turns out the little 60 year old german lady who runs the shop, knows as much about computers as anyone I've ever met. She had 3 of my exact video cards (about 10 years old at this point) and got my machine running as smooth as it's going to. It's like an organ bank for antiquated machine.

In a lot of surveys, people in Scandinavian countries are often at the top of the lists for happiest people, and the US not so high.
I'm watching a documentary right now on divorce and the family courts in the US, and at points in it they contrast it with how simple it is in Scandinavian countries, and I'm pretty sure I now know why people there are so much happier than people here. |

I've seen polls that said that the US was happier than Europe. I guess if you change the sample size to a small collection of Nordic's and then compare it too...everybody in the US, I could see how they win. Try comparing us to Greeks or Serbs or the Polish or even the Spanish or Italians.
A lot of the US buzz about the greatness of Europe is awash with fantasy. The further south you go in Europe, the less likely you'll want to compare...the further east you go, the less likely you'll want to compare. If anything, I would liken Scandinavia to the upper class of Europe. Of course they are happiest! They are pretty happy in the United Arab Emirates too...and that's a Shiekdom...maybe we should look into it. In any event, we fall in line more or less with France and Germany and the UK but we have our warts just like Europe does and there is no denying those similarities exist and becoming more socialistic isn't going to change that. Ever. |

I think Americans of Scandinavian descent do pretty well here relative to the population too. Maybe even better than in Scandinavia, considering the U.S. is already #15 ranked in the "happiness index" poll I just looked up. Exclude just the Scandinavians from that and I bet they'd be up there in the top 5 or higher.

I believe NC requires a separation of a whole year before it will grant a divorce, which is pretty damned silly.

My post does not look anything like a serious political post! For one, where is the reference to Hitler? Where is the link to an article that has a headline that backs up my argument, but the body of the article is actually a bit contradictory to the headline and my argument!? Do you see me copy and pasting from an overtly biased website and not linking to it as my source, hoping someone doesn't check it? And, Dutch, where do you see me calling someone an idiot simply for disagreeing with me, but doing it in a passive-aggressive way so that I can deny it if someone calls me out on it!? You must not spend a lot of time in political threads if you think my post looked anything like a serious political post! |

I definitely wasn't a "serious political post", but I definitely missed the humor in a post about how stress from family law issues impacts one's happiness. I thought it was a good point. I think there's something cultural there in addition to the differences with the law. I've always been surrounded by a lot of people of Scandinavian-descent through family and the church I grew up in (people who still spoke Finnish and whatnot), and just anecdotally, they always did seem to have their shit together in terms of marriage and family relative to everyone else. Even when there's a divorce, they didn't tend to be drawn-out and hostile. Of course there's a bunch of other factors too.

Correct. How the logistics of divorce should play out within the legal system is a great question with philosophical undertones, though. There's no natural law there. |

I credited the difference in happiness between cultures based solely on how easy it is to get a divorce...kinda thought that was over the top a bit. On an individual basis, yeah, I can see why many people who got the shit end of the stick would be bitter about the process (and life in general). Friends of mine who have gone through divorce had a relatively easy time with it. (Probably because neither side could afford an expensive lawyer.) But it was still an expensive process involving multiple court appearances. And some of them still have to go to court from time to time (child custody stuff). In the countries the documentary (DivorceCorp) highlighted, they don't get the courts involved unless they absolutely have to. If both people want out, you just sign a form, wait 6 months, they say "You sure?" and if you say yes, you're divorced. No courts, no lawyers. I'm sure the documentary made it sound simpler that it is, but it would have to have been outright lying for it to come anywhere close to how messed up our family courts are. |

You should tell the owner that your boss is making it REAL hard for you to keep selling. I am in a non-sales job in a sales organization, and one thing that makes us work really well is we keep work that does not involve SELLING off of the salesmen's desks. Yeah, it causes some hardship at times, but at the end of the day when you are up double digits every year, it makes the hardship worth it.

I wonder if people who end up with massive amounts of tatoos all over, including their face and neck ever wake up one day, look in the mirror and think, "I fucked up."

Tonight my buddy took his family to the Giants game, to watch Clayton Kershaw blank them and the Dodgers clinch the playoffs and eliminate the Giants on our own field.
I was left to manage our softball team. In the semifinals of the playoffs. Win the first game, you get to play in the championship game right after. Two other guys outside of my best friend (who typically manages the squad) bailed as well, so we were down to 8 guys. In a 10-man softball league. So instead of your typical baseball alignment + one extra outfielder, we're now down to three outfielders and no second baseman. Against the 1st place, 10-0 in the regular season team. We scraped together an excellent defensive game and beat them 10-5. In the second game, I hit into a triple play in the top of the 2nd inning, and in the bottom of the inning they drop a 7-spot on us to take a 10-2 lead. We outscore them 18-3 over the next five innings and win going away, 20-13. I'm a little pumped at the moment |

Third championship overall, second consecutive. Very, very unexpected this year.
Triple play was a grounder to the second basemen with men on first and second. 4-6-3-2. The call on me at first was horseshit, I was safe by a step and a half. While the ruckus was going on, our guy from second rounded third and tried to score. The call on him was pretty lame as well (tag was very high, up around his shoulders), but in post game conversation, he says he thinks he was out. |

It's actually an interesting thing to do as gifts for our girls. Last Christmas we gave them several different "blind" presents like the My Little Pony figures or Lego minifigs. I admit, I held my breath seeing if I got unlucky and they doubled up on a figure of one kind or another. Fortunately, they got different ones. Definitely added a bit more to the gift-giving rather than simply saying "here, enjoy". That site, however, seems a bit of a rip-off because Lego minifigs tend to go a few dollars cheaper than what's listed there at any Target. |

It irrationally irritates me when they refer to Wild Card teams in Baseball as making the playoffs. Win the WC game and you make the playoffs. Right now you're just playing a 163rd game.

I had actually never heard of this site until Pilot listed it. I wouldn't pay $6 for something I can get for $4 at Target, that's for sure. I've also found it odd that Kidrobot sells their blind boxes for $11 on site, but I can find them at a local music store for $7.97

Based on my completely unscientific examination, it appears that a higher than usual number of porcupines are being hit by cars. In the past, I hardly ever remember seeing a porcupine dead on the side of the road. But over the past few months, I've seen at least a dozen.
