I wonder if there is even a single bracket out there who had GMU in the Final Four. What a run!

They're a surprisingly huge school (about 30,000 students - bigger than UConn), and this'll certainly help recruiting. I could see them becoming more "relevant" in college basketball. |

Apparently an 11 made it in 1986. Don't know who.

GMU is a big commuter school, so...I dunno, it'll be tough. But maybe this will help them with some institutional focus or maybe with the state giving them more money to do some other stuff.

GMU is notably the first mid-major to make the final four since it expanded to 64 teams (according to CBS). Naturally you can debate on whether UMass is a mid-major because they don't play football and play in the A-10, but I don't believe them to be one..at that time, they were a fairly major program and UMass isn't some commuter school using basketball as a way up.

Wow, I don't think I've ever been as sick about a game between two teams I really don't have a rooting interest for as I was for GMU at the end of regulation. Incredible game, and incredible play in OT!

LSU in 1986 was a #11 seed.
Looks like #11 seed is the lowest to make the final 4. |

If Florida wins today, it will be the first time since 1979 that at least one #1 seed not making the final 4

For some reason, after that last game, I have next to zero interest in the Florida/Villanova game.

I said earlier in this thread that this George Mason team reminded me more of '99 Gonzaga than any team since then. I don't know if they can extend this run over a long period of time (or if Larranaga will make the same mistake Dan Monson did), but this particular team is totally legitimate. Like the '99 Zags, they have the ability to win the title if everything breaks right. |

Incredible incredible game... I just shot way up in the pool as I have a UCLA-Villanova championship with UCLA winning it all (Kentucky was my Final Four pick for this region) and everyone else had UConn picked just about.
Plus, I love upsets like this. Awesomeness.

If 'Nova wins today, then the potential storyline exists where Mason could play the biggest Cinderella champion in the semis and then play the previous #11 seed to make it in in LSU. |

20 years after the last 11 seed (the only one up to now) to make the Final Four.. another one does it.
Who was more unlikely? 11 seed LSU? (They beat 6 seed Michigan St, 3 seed Memphis St., 2 Seed Georgia Tech, and 1 seed Purdue to get there.. the total combined seed fof 12 is the lowest possible # you can get making your way through the playoffs?) or 11 seed George Mason? (6 Seed Michigan St (woah, creepy), 3 Seed NC, 7 Seed Wichita St and 1 seed Uconn.. I think while LSU was more unlikely from a numbers perspective.. LSU played in the SEC. GMU.. doesn't. George Mason, the most unlikely F4 team ever.

Actually, the LSU run was #6 seed Purdue, #3 Memphis State, #2 Ga Tech and #1 Kentucky. It is also noteworthy that LSU won the first two rounds on their own homecourt in Baton Rouge. From that perspective, George Mason had a tougher road to the F4 (though playing the regionals in DC certainly didn't hurt). LSU also had two future NBAers in their starting lineup in 1986. |

Two home games as an #11 seed. Wow. I'm sure it was like GMU having what amounted to having a home game in the Elite 8. But still. There is no contest here. George Mason was among the biggest underdogs ever to make it this far. Do you realize that a few weeks ago, we were discussing the merit of whether this team should even BE in the tournament? No contest and no way if they were in the Big East or C-USA that we'd think as little as them as we did because they're from the CAA and well, given how they'd played up to this point, who can blame anyone for thinking that. But still...

Yeah, I believe LSU getting those home games actually led to the rule change disallowing teams from playing on their home court in the tournament. I think the rule was changed starting the next season. I remember Gene Keady being really pissed about that, rightfully so. Purdue lost that first round game to LSU in overtime. |

Fustrating game to watch from a Villanova perspective. They look so sluggish and slow. For how quick these guards are supposted to be, they sure can't break anyone down off the dribble.

If Nova continues to suck, the top 3 conferences in the RPI will have no teams in the final 4. The teams are coming from the 4, 7, and 10th ranked conferences.

Mike Nardi win's the "I'm too scared to play" award over the past few weeks. Talk about a guy just shying away from playing. Ever since he blew that layup in the UConn win at the wachovia center. He just hasn't been the same.
Ok, the game is going off now. |

By the way, for the record, I love George Mason but I tend to think Florida will finish them next week. Yeah, Noah's a dick but the Gators' defense has been extremely impressive. They're peaking at the right time and have been snuffing out very potent offenses the entire tournament.

Just getting to the Final Four is great for them. I think their run has to end sooner than later. But at the same time, it would be really cool to see them run the table on this thing.

I don't see why George Mason is being written off. They beat some solid teams in the past two weeks. Even though I'm hating on Florida, Nova's had this loss coming for awhile. They haven't shot the ball well in about a month.

Again, I think GMU is totally legitimate. This is not flukey, they're damn good, and I think they would have matched up pretty well with Villanova. It's just that Florida has been devastating this entire tournament. I think they will win it all. |

To quote myself, that is easily the worst conference RPI's dating back to 1999 (the earliest I could find the RPI). Also, this will be the 8th consecutive season where a conference has at least two teams in the final 4. This is the first time an SEC team has been in the final 4 since 2000, and the first time its had 2 teams in the final 4 since 1996. UCLA is the first PAC 10 team in the final four since 2001. i don't feel like researching the CAA. |
