Moot point on the draft classes as they will not be available for online franchise. It is something they are looking at for the future. |

OS has revealed a few more details about the game in general and online franchise specifically:
There is no salary cap in online mode, so we'll have to set one and monitor it ourselves. If we don't fill up the league, the CPU doesn't have any trade logic for the CPU controlled teams, which is part of why the commish has to approve every roster move. |

I'm sliding further and further off of the fence.
Maybe I'll be doing two NCAA Online Dynasties this year.

Wow, that is shocking. I can't believe it won't have a cap. I agree we'll need to police it ourselves and this pretty much guarantees that I will only do this online league....can you imagine the cheese in other online leagues? |

I don't understand how there can be a working cap in offline dynasties but online dynasties aren't able to have one.

I don't get it either. Even if they wanted to give online franchises flexibility, they should have made it an option to turn the cap on/off. |

How in the world does free agency work with no cap?

The only fear, I assume, is that your team could go broke if they spend too much on players. Otherwise, FA could just be a free for all without some house rules. |

There is some talk that they might add the cap back in before it goes gold, or in a patch, but I wouldn't hold my breath on either of those. If they don't, we are just going to need to have a league set cap that we all adhere to with the commish/admin monitoring to make sure that we do.

After thinking about it some more, I don't think it's going to be too tough. It will be a lot of work for the commish, especially foe the cpu teams and keeping them under the cap, but assuming we do the AFC/NFC representative thing, it's nothing that can't be taken care of in a single nights work.

It makes me think they really just copied the NCAA OD code and only made minimal adaptions to it. I agree it makes no sense and is very disappointing. |

So, do we need to confirm interest with everyone after these "revelations?" I wish I could be surprised...but EA has disappointed me so many times that I'm not. I'll probably still get it, just for the continuous human vs human games.

I wonder if the commish could run a copy league in single player mode, controlling all of the teams. Might make it easier to track everything.

Would it be easier to just do a season? Reset and repeat. Online franchise mode seems fun but it doesn't really seem like what they have is online franchise. Just seems like it could get real messy.

Well...I don't know that I'd be up for this really. I mean I am/was all fired up about Online Franchise...but if the general consensus is to drop the whole idea because a complete lack of any kind of contracts whatsoever, I think I'd just wind up playing in a couple NCAA dynasties again.

Could work with a super dedicated commissioner. I have been part of some older Madden PC leagues that were very similar in nature. It was a great experience but it was a ton of work for the people that ran it. |

Agreed. So this basically makes the league identical to FOF MP leagues, since Free Agency is pretty much pointless and everybody has way too much money to let important players go
I could see implimenting some house rules too. Shouldn't be too difficult. It's kind of like playing a super advanced Front Page Sports: Football Pro 98

We're definitely going to have to spell out the rules before the game launches to avoid any issues. I didn't see anything mentioned in there about sliders for the dynasty. Hopefully we'll be able to implement those to make the game fit our league's "style"...whatever that is.
Honestly, I don't really care that much about free agency and the salary cap and all of that. I play console video games to play the games...not to do the ownership stuff. Though I am excited about the draft for some weird reason. The good news about the lack of features is that the offseason won't take nearly as long as it could have. |

So...
I pre-ordered NCAA a few days ago, but now the more I read the more I'm concerned about the direction the franchise is headed. So I'm curious - has anyone thought of/seen/hear of/whatever a real plan on how to make the online franchise work with Madden? Is there any real logistical plan on how to iron out the salary issues, etc? There's a part of me considering switching my pre-order to Madden.

Well...
I read on the EA dev's blog that they worked out a system where everybody had to release X number of players with a OVR rating above 70 during every offseason. That might be one place to start. We could also assign a point value to every player based on their OVR rating when they were signed...and then have a point cap. Maybe something like this. 0 < 50 = 0 51 - 60 = 1 61 - 70 = 2 71 - 80 = 3 81 - 85 = 4 86 - 90 = 5 91 - 95 = 6 95 - 100 = 7 We could add up the points of a team like New England who will probably have the highest number, and then set the cap slightly below what they currently have. This is just an idea, but If we have someone keeping track of it via Excel Spreadsheet and posted on a yearly basis I don't think it would be too hard. In all reality even if there was a cap included in the online dynasty, I think 90% of us would be nowhere near it. In my experience most teams in Madden are so far under the cap to start with that it very rarely plays a role in the game. This self enforced cap would just keep people from creating absolutely unstoppable dynasties via free agency. Now we just have to come up with a way to determine who is allowed to sign who in free agency . I would imagine we would go with whoever has the worst record gets first dibs, almost like a draft. Thoughts?

Here's a thought..
What if we took on the mindset that Quiksand does here: FOF House Rules Idea - "Action Points" - Front Office Football Central And tried to develop an "action points" system. It wouldn't be as elaborate probably as what he has because we're not going to want to restrict things like drafting, but we could apply it to FA and maybe a few other things. So, maybe you have an action points cap. Somehow players cost an Action Point per X overall rating. You have Y Action Points per season. These Action Points could apply to: FA Acquisitions Playbook Changes Other? Maybe we could give "bonus" action points for being one of the worst 4, 8, whatever teams? Just thinking out loud here.

I get the feeling that it's going to be tough to find a "fair" way to handle free agency. I think handling like a draft might be the best way to go. It may be a 10-15 round draft and I think it would put a new layer of strategy on the offseason. But I think it would really cripple the top 5-10 teams. Maybe I'm wrong on that. Some of these decisions may not get made until we have the game in our hands, though. And don't forget the 3 weeks we'll have after the game comes out when online dynasty won't be working properly. That will be extra time for us to figure things out

Another issue is that the draft has pre-made classes which could allow overly ambitious people to sim through all of the classes in a single player dynasty and find out who the studs, sleepers, busts, etc are. For that reason, I'd think that NCAA classes may need to be used after all.

a) Carefully pick people who wouldn't b) Considering leagues would only probably make it 4 seasons or so before Madden 2011, you might never have the same draft classes anyhow. Honestly, 30 draft classes (or whatever) would be fine if they had a mechanism in place to randomize names. Or just have huge pool of premade players and randomly draw them into draft classes. You're right. With Madden, people are just trying to figure out how to make it work, since the game itself seems to be in better shape than NCAA from a gameplay perspective. EF may be right. I might just go back to all offline this year. Sometimes multiplayer seems like more hassle than it is worth. Last edited by Kodos : 06-18-2009 at 09:20 AM. |
