Defense gets raped on opening drive. On offense, Ronnie Brown runs his ass off. The first pass play is called, and its a fumble.
Season. In. A. Nutshell.

It's weird that I remember this since I'm not a Florida sports fan, but I specifically remember all the excitement on the field after the Marlins '97 world series win, and then on-field interview with Huizenga, who waited about 20 seconds before telling the celebrating fans that "we won't be competitive next year". What odd, total douche thing to say, at that moment.

You have to think that the Dolphins will be able to get at least one win somewhere in there. Maybe when the Jets come to town? If not, it'd be pretty cool for the same organization that went 16-0 to have gone 0-16.

There was a blurb in Peter King's column this morning that of all the players drafted or traded for by Miami between 1998 and 2003, exactly zero of those players are still on the roster.

Of course this made me go back and see who these players were. God, what were they thinking? John Avery? J.J. Johnson? Jamar Fletcher? Kenny Mixon? Eddie Moore? On a side note, how is it possible that the Dolphins have drafted only 4 players from the University of Miami, Florida State, or the University of Florida since 1998? I know there aren't any sure things based on where you went to school. I know all the schools have had their up and downs during that time. However, all three have won BCS titles during that time. That has to count for something? We have drafted more players from the top three Mississippi universities (Ole Miss, Miss. State, and Southern Miss.) with five than the top three Florida universities. Don't you take a runner on a player from UM,FSU, or UF before you take one on a player from one of the Mississippi schools?

The Avery one really burns, because we got him instead of Randy Moss, and then decided to bring in such high character guys like Demetrius Underwood and Cecil Collins the next couple of years.

Well, drafting Yatil Green did wonders in 1997. I don't think after that pick I'd take anyone from the U either. Also, between 98 and 03 they only had like 2 1st round picks or something. I'd argue that their rate for success isn't that far off the NFL for non 1st round picks.

I just took a look at the Lions' to do a comparison. I don't know of any players who the Lions traded picks for during that time (who are still on the team). So, just looking at draft picks there are exactly 7 players from those drafts still on the team. Of those 7, four are quality starters (Shaun Rogers, Dominic Raiola, Jeff Backus, and Cory Redding) and three are back-ups (Boss Bailey, Jared DeVries, and Kalimba Edwards). Bailey and Edwards may start, but they really shouldn't be. Only one of those players, Backus, was a first rounder.

So one bad pick should disqualify a school from having the Dolphins picking? If that were the case, what the hell were they doing pick Todd Wade from Mississippi two years after picking the GREAT John Avery from the same school. Call me a homer, but I think I'll take my chances with a player from UM, UF, or FSU especially during that time period.

Drafting Randy Moss would have given us an excellent shot at the Superbowl in 1998.

Possibly after the bye, with Buffalo in town? Philadelphia is a very bad team, maybe them. Jets always have the Dolphins number, especially late in the season. Not a chance against Buffalo IN Buffalo. Maybe against NE if NE packs it up (they'll be 14-0 at this time). Cincy will be fighting for a playoff berth on Dec 30. |

I don't think NED is packing it up this year. My working theory is that the team is set out to destroy the rest of the NFL and as many records as possible, with Bill retiring after the season. The only way NED packs it in then is if there is NOTHING to fight for at that point: playoff position all sown up, Brady has destroyed Manning's passing records, at least one game already lost, etc.

I seriously wonder if someone is pulling a Godzilla Blitz with the Dolphins. It's the only explanation that makes sense. Lemon to remain starter for Dolphins Associated Press, Updated 13 minutes ago DAVIE, Fla. (AP) - Cleo Lemon will remain the Dolphins' No. 1 quarterback when Miami plays against Buffalo on Sunday. Coach Cam Cameron announced the move Monday, ending speculation that rookie John Beck would get his first NFL start for the winless Dolphins. "We have two guys who don't have a lot of experience," Cameron said. "We're going to need them both." Trent Green started the first five games, but his season ended Oct. 20 when he went on injured reserve following his second severe concussion in 13 months. The Dolphins have lost their last three games with Lemon as the quarterback. Beck was the first quarterback the Dolphins drafted in the first or second round since Dan Marino. |

But they can't start Beck. QB is a tough position to learn in the NFL and you can't expect him to do well. What? You mean Buffalo start their rookie QB already? Damn.

WTF?? is Cam just trying to save his ass from the 0-16 season? What is the point on trying to win now instead of developing rookies? even more stupid when your "win now" guy is not able to win anything.

I read somewhere (maybe ProFootballtalk.com) that the thinking was that the Dolphins would continue to start Lemon until they won a game and then would go to Beck. They didn't want Beck to feel additional pressure trying to not be the QB of an 0-16 team.
I think that's what I read.

That is pathetic. Never mind trying to figure out if he is any good. Let's not put the pressure of 0-16 on him. If anything, there is less pressure on this team now than there has ever been. They suck, we all know it. Losing is not a surprise.

Can this season seriously get any worse?
No Chambers, No Brown, Cleo effing Lemon as the starting QB... I mean shit, at least throw Beck in. Dude's not a spring chicken so start his ass already.

What worries me is that Huizenga will just say it was a rebuilding year so we can't blame Cameron and he'll get another year.
The thing is, if this was a rebuilding year, then Cameron has done an even worse job. The signing of Porter, the trade for Green, drafting an old ass rookie QB. None of that makes sense from a rebuilding standpoint.
