We have to go back to LA after the Atlanta series. I'm sure they'll remember this series.

It was good to see Reyes keep the ball down a little better in this one. I am concerned on how this kid develops with Duncan and TLR and if they keep shoving the 2-seamer and "pitch to contact" mentality down his throat, when he appears to be a natural power arm/strikeout (high in the zone) pitcher.

With Weaver, however, I can't wait to see Duncan dig into him. These are the type of veteran pitchers Duncan works wonders with.

It will be interesting to see what Duncan can do with Weaver, but I didn't think Ponson was that bad.

I do like his kid Chris though, he could develop into a good hitter.

I have the same worry about Reyes. And the same optimism about Weaver. Basically, you have my opinions.

Hmmm...can you tell me what I would like for breakfast tomorrow? And what I should wear?

Anyone hear about the rumored trade with the Braves?

Cards would get:
Andruw Jones
Edgar Renteria
O. Villarel

Braves get:
Wainwright
Rico Washington
Pomeraz
Gall

The Renteria part of it makes me laugh.

Both in the Nelson Muntz "Ha, ha!" vein but also in the sense of "David Eckstein is hitting .314, why the hell do you want Renteria back?"

Hadn't heard that rumor though, now.

It was on email going around my work (which is full of hard-core Cards fans). Some guy on XM mentioned it as a chance.

I think the plan would be to move Eckstien to 2B.

Hmmmm... Renteria back in Cardinal red? Not sure that would happen, but weirder things have.

I would take Andruw Jones in a minute.. but that's tough giving up Wainright, next year's starting pitcher.

Of course Renteria is hitting well this year, so we'd have one hell of a lineup.. but who do you replace Wainright with?

I'm going to be the Reds fan that breaks up this love fest by saying that we will catch you. Unless we give away Dunn and Griffey in some trade for Terry Mulholland first.

I don't know... I'm not good at the heat-of-the-moment machismo style betting. I'm open to suggestions.

So, what's the deal with cutting Sidney Ponson?

He sucked, got sent to the bullpen, and didn't take it well at all. Quick ticket to DFA.

Didn't the Reds just trade their starting SS and RF for some pitching? Isn't Adam Dunn the strikeout king of the NL? (ok maybe 2nd behind Jimmy E)

I wasn't ripping on cutting him, I honestly haven't followed it much. I know the Reds were trying to get him for several years, it seems like it's just as well that they didn't.

Especially when his contract was attached to incentives relating to starts.

I wonder what the odds were that the Braves would score 15 runs without a single RBI from their top 2 in the category & only 1 RBI from their top 3?

Because he was lazy, had a terrible attitude and was pitching terribly. Those aren't good enough reasons for you?

Ponson
REC 4-4 | SV 0 | ERA 5.24 | WHIP 1.62

Weaver
REC 3-10 | SV 0 | ERA 6.60 | WHIP 1.56

Not much different here.
Where did you read he was lazy, had a terrible attitude, and was pitching THAT bad.. or better yet worse than Weaver's pitched this year?
Oh yeah LaRussa said this and that, must be true.
I really don't care about their feud. What I do care about is spending money on Weaver when Ponson cost us peanunts and didn't pitch any worse than Weaver has so far.
I'll eat my words if Weaver finishes with better stats than Ponson.

You're right. Ponson actually is a fantastic guy to have around the club house and they just shit canned him for the hell of it.

Not pitching that bad? He gave up 26 earned runs in his last 6 starts. He had a whopping 9.55 ERA in his last 6 starts. How bad does it have to get?

Don't lump me in with the Jeff Weaver fan club. However I am all for at least trying something different instead of running Ponson out there every 5 days to get slaughtered. If Duncan can turn Weaver around then great. If not then it is no worse than if Ponson stayed.

When the manager says a player has a terrible attitude and he is giving up 26 earned runs in a 6 game stretch then yeah I am ok with them showing him the door.

First, it will allow him plenty of innings in which to work out his struggles over the past couple of months. Second, it potentially provides the Cardinals with a sixth-starter option, while Mark Mulder is on the disabled list. At this point, there is no obvious candidate to receive a start if a member of the current St. Louis rotation were injured or needed a break for whatever reason

Was he struggling that bad...with an ERA in the 4 range?

I was at that pitiful effort last night...cooked in the right field sun and watched Braves home runs...Weaver was all over the place...and the Braves are hot right now, so I wasn't too surprised. Don't know if you guys read viva el birdos cardinals blog...best one out there right now (IMO). I should have known the Cards would lose...bad things usually happen when I score tickets at the last minute and make that 2.5 hour drive.

Thompson's big issue right now is arm slot and he's decreased the efficiency of his sinker (i.e., it doesn't), so he'd bring his 88 mph non-sinker in and was getting ripped. I like him and hope he gets straightened out in Memphis...wish he'd incorporate his changeup more.

And that trade rumor above w/ Renteria and company is crazy. Who would make that deal??? Wainright will be good, but he hasn't been stellor in the past 2 months. Rico Washington is a career minor leaguer w/ no range that we signed to keep Springfield afloat while our young OFs (Haether, Stavinoha, Gorecki) learn to hit w/o losing every game. Pomeraz is a soft tosser whose record is more a product of run support then talent. Gall is your typical AAAA player...little to no impact at the major league level (although I think he deserves more a shake then TLR has given him). Wainright is a longterm gem (if he stays healthy)...but ATL wouldn't give up Renteria, let alone Jones and the MR...for that package. Just my opinion.
