Oh I think Stand up is the better place for Cosby. He would have also been good in sitcoms, but I think his stand up makes him a more than worthwhile first rounder.

I was going to take Cosby for sitcom if he was still there for my next pick.

I'd take Cosby at standup. The pilot for The Cosby Show was based on the stand-up concert "Bill Cosby Himself"

Cosby would be stand up for me, also, and it was a good pick.

See I don't disagree that standup is Cosby's best art. But looking at the relative fields I feel he is a strong pick in sitcom than standup given the overwhelming strength of standup.

When I knew I'd be picking at 1.4, I went in with a top four (in order) of: Carlin, Pryor, Carson, Cosby.

I probably would have gone with Cosby at sitcom, since I think that's going to be a tougher spot to fill. Still, hard to argue either way.

albionmoonlight was kind enough to send in his pick:

At 2.2, albionmoonlight takes Lucille Ball (sitcom).

Personally, I love this pick. Albion is running a risk of going too old school for the voters, but he has two legends achoring his team right now.

Hold that thought until the person is taken -- I'd like to hear who it is once they're off the board. I can think of two -- one who'd I strongly disagree on, and one who you could make an argument for.

Lucille Ball. There's someone who wasn't on my draft board, but this is a wonderful pick. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a better comedian who is a woman and she is arguably the best pick in the sitcom genre. I just love what albion is doing early on here.

I love the Chris Rock pick. You open yourself to the old-timers who don't want to see any current generation guys go high, but I really think Rock has been the best standup comedian in the business for at least five years. He's this generation's Pryor. He doesn't have the longevity to be a first round lock, but this is a good spot to take him.

kcchief is up, and has two of the next four picks. Should be interesting to see what he does with it.

Chris Rock is a good pick. His newest special wasn't as good, but bring the pain and bigger and blacker were both great.

I was hoping she might slip until the third round. Valuable to me because she's a comedy sitcom legend AND a woman, fulfilling another crucial criteria.

This is a homer pick, but I have to do it because this will be no fun if somebody else gets him.

David Letterman - Variety/Talk Show

My idol. My entire sense of humor was formed in the summer of 1980 watching the morning show. I had to do it.

Dave Chapelle Sketch Comedy.

Chapelle's Show is one of Comedy Centrals biggest hits and Chapelle showed off just how funny he is at sketch comedy. In just two seasons, the show spawned more catch phrases than I can count.

Bill Cosby for standup was my #1, and to me it was the first person who popped into my head when I saw this. I mentioned earlier that I had a top 6 that I thought were pretty clearly head and shoulders above the rest of the field. Cosby, Carlin, Robin Williams, Jerry Seinfeld, Richard Pryor, and Johnny Carson, not necessarily in that order, though I would have quickly selected Bill Cosby #1.

Chaplain and Ball are great picks IMO, Lucille Ball had not crossed my mind at all.

No kidding. Staying up to watch Late Night on a Friday when I was a kid was the highlight of a week, and probably shaped my sense of humor more than anything I can remember.

That's why I get sad when I watch him now. He's still good, but the spark is gone. He's been mailing it in for the better part of a decade. I really think that losing the Tonight Show drained something out of him that hasn't come back.

I like the Murphy pick. Tough call as to where to put him, but I think movies will end up being the right call.

Reminder: kcchief has my second round pick, so he's on the clock.

I struggled with this one, there are 2 or 3 left out there that I really wanted to take, but in the end I decided Murphy was the best pick...thanks for the props

Sorry ... I left work and got home and had to track down a furnace guy to come in tomorrow and fix my blower motor. Thank goodness it's only going to be in the 30s tonight.

This pick is painful ...

Jay Leno, standup

Two reasons:

Before he became evil by selling his soul to Helen Kushnick and stabbed in the back the man who gave him his break when Carson didn't like him, Leno was the best standup in the biz. During the 1980s, I don't think there was a better standup. He still has moments, they are just too few and far between. But during the 1980s, he was one of maybe five people for whom I would sneak past my bedtime and stay up late to watch Dave on a school night.

Reason No. 2: I figure the variety/talk show host category will get thin with Carson, Letterman and Leno off the board. If I have him at standup, somebody else will need to dip a bit deeper in the pool for a talk show guy.

I double prop. I think Eddie Murphy is well on his way to being the next Bill Cosby. Their careers have many parallels, although Murphy has been more successful on film than Cosby was. But when the rose was off Cosby in the '80s, he reinvented himself as a family comedy star -- a path that Murphy is following now. It's just a matter of time before Eddie Murphy ends up with a top-rated sitcom on NBC Must See TV Thursday Night.

I pretty much agree with this 100%. I had Leno on my list, also as a standup instead of talkshow host. People forget how good he was back then. He's good now too -- still among the hardest working standup comedian in the business.

The only downside to the pick is that some people have such a negative reaction to him (usually because they're big Letterman fans) that you may lose votes on name value alone.

Without giving much away, I am interested to see how the sketch comedians fill out. I think a lot of them will come from one show in particular, but there are a lot of very successful comedians that have participated in short-lived sketch shows.

To me, the sketch category feels like the centers in an FOF draft. So much talent to choose from that you feel like you can get somebody late -- but the top guys are so good it's hard to resist.

at 3.2, I'll take one of my all-time favorites, Bill Murray. I'll stick him in as a movie actor.

From Stripes to The Royal Tannenbaums, he is a versatile comedian who has gotten better with age, IMO. Welcome to my team, Bill.

Woody Allen - Stand-up

I know, I know, he's mostly known for his movies, but he was a very popular stand-up in the 1960's. Also, I need to start thinking about filling my stand-ups with quality players.

I may regret not taking a sitcom or movie pick here, but this guy was my favorite comedian as a kid and I don't think he'd be around in the next round. Not every day you can pick a standup legend who also has an Oscar.

Steven Wright, standup

There are three women who, IMO, are head and shoulders above the rest for this draft. I got one. And Oliegirl just got another. Great pick in what will be a need catagory for a lot of teams.

While we all wait for sab to make his pick, now would be a good time to send in some advance picks if you know you won't be around. You don't have to send them to me if I pick near you -- anyone else is fine too.

Do you have the other half of this amulet? I have four comedy albums in my collection, and his "I Have a Pony" is one of the four. Seinfeld and Cosby are two others, and I can't mention the fourth because I don't believe he's been selected yet.

Wright was off-kilter in a way that cracked me up. I used one of his jokes just yesterday when Mrs. kcchief19 asked me if I slept OK and I said, "No, I made a few mistakes."
