Thanks. I have to say I felt strongly about this pick because
A. I think he's a clear #1 in his field and am not concerned about finding either a military or political leader (especially political), which is what the early picks were. B. By picking him I also knock-out one of the next best alternatives, Keynes. Since I'm safe with my economist pick, I'm going to say that I think the no duplicate country rule is going to lead to some people having some might weak economists. |

I thought that only applied to a single person and not the whole draft. So since Jesus is off the board does that mean I can not pick anyone from Israel?

I beleive it is one country per category. I choose Greece for Alexander ot block Leonidas as a military leader later as a pick, for example. But other Greeks could be chosen easily

This is a controversial pick. I actually believe Jesus is the Son of God, so I would not have picked him. You can compare the value of One person to Another in society, but it is sort of unfair to judge Julius Caesar or Adam Smith to the actual Son of God.

The problem with these drafts is that once you get out of the first round, perhaps first two rounds, you never know if the picks you think are the top on the board will go early, middle or late.

Well I wish I had known(read) that earlier because it certainly would have changed my pick.
Restrictions on picks- 1) A country may only be used once per category. 2) Half of a participants picks must be pre-20th century, and the other half post-20th century. That seems a little vague to me.

Technically, Israel shouldn't be eliminated (It didn't exist when Jesus lived).

Right, but we already clarified that. We're going by modern countries, even if it didn't exist at the time the person was alive. Sorry about the confusion, Noop.

I didn't understand that only one country per category rule applied across the board. That makes this pick even better, because it takes out the whole black American and women's civil rights movement out in one go.

The draft is falling largely how I expect so far. Except for Saudi Arabia's oilfields and Adam Smith this early.

I'm personally very surprised that the Army Chief I'd consider far and away the #1 is still yet to be nabbed after two selections in that category.

A few notes:
1) I notice I've been saying post-20th century, which is pretty stupid. I clarified it in the original post, but it looks like people already figured out what I meant anyways. 2) Be careful about announcing picks that you think are eliminated. While I'm sure no one is going to select Keynes as an athlete, there are others that could possibly fit multiple categories. 3) As I noted to DT earlier, the person does not have to have actually performed this duty at any point in history to be selected. It's up to you to make your case to the voters as to why someone would be good.

Not to get into a tangent religious discussion, but I picked him solely on his historical existence & signifigance, not the man that Christianity believes him to be (son of god, etc etc). All faith-based arguments aside, he was quite possibly the most influential religious leader ... ever, such that one of the most widely known and practiced religions in history was formed around him. I knew it was possibly going to be controversial, but anything touching on religious beliefs is going to be. |

Someone was going to pick him, and they were going to pick him early, and he will ring-ding-ding the voters and it's a great pick from every angle, no question. I just can't get past the fact that in a draft of humans, someone picks aspect of God, you know what I'm saying?

I thought it was a point of emphasis in Christianity that Jesus was human.

It is also a point of emphasis that Jesus is one of three aspects of God called the Trinity. God made flesh.

From your point of view, sure. We don't share the same beliefs, so we're coming from two quite different points of view, but whaddya gonna do. But, that said, I'm picking the historical, quite human figure, not the divine figure. I understand for many its hard to seperate the two, but again, and you said it...somebody was gonna pick him. |

And I hereby am going to avoid yapping about this one much further in here, to avoid threadjacking the draft.

It was BAD! BAD BAD BAD!
Honestly, thus far, the Oil Fields is my mega bust, and Sun Tzu, believe it or not, is my second bust. The Oil coulda been had ages later in the draft, and while Sun Tzu is the man, I think there were better picks available. Last edited by Coffee Warlord : 05-12-2009 at 08:01 PM. |

I had the Nelson pick #1. I agree that MLK, knocking off the whole American Civil Rights movement, is a great pick both in its own terms and for its strategic assets.
