Umm good thread as i have been thinking about it a lot lately, so i'll use it as self psychotherapy.
Right now I do a lot of different things, all them related to internet marketing/advertising. I started in 1998 with a few adult websites just to get some extra earnings, when i was in college studying to become software engineer. All the sudden internet boomed, and of course porn was the main use of it. In a few months those websites became gold mines, i created more and more, working up to 14 hours per day, sleeping only around 3 or 4 and i was earning way more than what any software engineer ever could, so i decided to follow that path, leaving studies and forming a LLC to be able to better manage my income and taxes, invest the earnings in properties, etc. After some time i had to slow down a bit, as i was becoming a workaholic and it was even affecting my health. So as those sites where more or less running on autopilot, and with me never being a big fan of porn myself, i started to use most of my time on talking with a lot of people, attending to webmasters meetings worldwide, etc. Basicaly making contacts in the industry and learning a bit of everything, from graphical design to web programming, search engine optimizing, internet marketing, etc. So i discovered that there are more things in internet besides porn, that could make good money too. Next thing were casinos/poker advertising in search engines, that introduced me to PPC advertising and was great for a while too, until governments became more restrictive. Once i learned a lot of tricks about ppc and other online advertising methods, and knew a lot of big traffic sites owners, i started to search and find more products to advertise for a commission in those sites/methods. And that is basicaly what i do now, research the market, find products and advertise them online, also managing thousands of "surfers" and driving them where it could be more profitable. Mainly for a % of sales as affiliate but sometimes also hired to manage campaigns for other companies. So my job has moved from mainly web design/programming to internet marketing/traffic management with less designing/programming work. As side job and mainly as hobby i work as graphical designer for Wolverine Studios. My first job was the interface and graphics for Music Wars Rebirth and then for the new Basketball sim that will enter in open beta this weekend. I really enjoy this and i wish i could dedicate more time to it or to become a full time job one day. I'm happy overall with my job, specially the freedom of working on my own schedule and from anywhere just with a notebook, and the creativity needed for internet marketing, but i must admit that lately it has burned me a bit to be always a freelancer and always burning my brain to find the next thing to do, as everything runs too fast in the internet biz, and what could be making you rich this month, could become nothing next one. Both me and my wife are a bit tired of me working almost 24/7 as when i'm not directly working, i'm thinking about what i could be doing instead of enjoying my free time. So lately i have been toying with the idea of being hired by a bigger company that would appreciate my internet knowledge and experience to manage and expand their online business, and/or as graphical designer, that would give me more stability and less headaches even earning less than working on my own. I have started to shop myself around my contacts to see if it could be worth it. I guess we are never happy with what we have, most of my friends would kill for having a job from home like mine, while sometimes i wonder if i wouldn't be happier just having their fixed schedule and a repeating task and enjoying my free time without having to think about work, specially now that my kid is 2 years old and i would like to enjoy more time with him. Ufff i feel better after writing all that, you can pass me the psychologist bill now

I'm a Software Development Engineer.
The company I work for here in the Philippines is one of the world's larget BPO providers. In 2006, they purchased a big healthcare billing company based in Chicago, and in 2007, I was assigned as the tech lead for the Philippine IT division for the billing company (which is why I went to Chicago in '07).

My job is similar to Pumpy's. I am a senior analyst for my company, which markets specialty food products to a major grocery chain. Trying to figure out where we can get our products and how best to utilize the space we're given is a major part of my job. I also supervise 3 people who pretty much do the same thing.
To think I started here 7 years ago in A/R and as the backup receptionist. Things have worked out pretty well!

so if any FOFCer gets pulled over in Texas now you know we're busting out the "so i know this state trooper..." thing now i think we have a really cool mix of people on this board, pilots, cops, firemen, IT-geeks, consultants, ministers, small business people, large corporation people, government people. it's a really cool mix.

I am a consultant in the marketing analytics group of a market research and tracking conglomerate. I mainly work on marketing return on investment, but I can be asked to do anything from test marketing to crisis "wargaming". That, plus getting to travel globally keeps things interesting.

I'm a software developer for about a 200 person company, I generally rant and rave about what our industry will be like in 5 to 10 years and insist that we can invent it today. Generally anything I predict comes true, except my project deadlines (an obvious limiting factor to my success). That is related to....
My sideline is economics based artificial intelligence, I build bots that gather in tons of data, other bots that process that data, and temper it with my own analysis to make predictions of the stock market. I trade that for free trading with my contact in finance. I make more on the side than the job I spend most of my day doing. But my end goal is my own business and I have a lot to learn still. Thankfully, my company hired some people who know what they are doing, and it turns out they implemented a lot of the stuff I was proposing, so there is hope that I might have a gift for business after all (beyond number crunching). |

Thanks, glad to finally be out of it. Some of the companies I have worked for have been great, but I do not miss the hours and I do not miss the customers (not entirely true, some customers are great). I bounced around a few places... mainly Home Depot, CompUSA, and Computer City. Most of the stores (and companies) I have worked for are now gone. I believe that I have personally destroyed 3 or 4 former fortune 500 companies As computer operator, I basically am a glorified mail clerk. I oversee the printing and inserting of almost 1/2 the mail the IRS sends out (Ogden, UT does the other 1/2, not sure who sends out the checks, we don't do that). Any mail that needs to be sent out is sent to a computer in my department, where we print it, insert it into envelopes with any applicable forms or documentation, and send it out on trucks. If you ever get a piece of mail from the IRS where something is missing, chances are that someone in my dept messed up (probably me). Last edited by fantom1979 : 10-09-2009 at 09:15 AM. |

I know exactly how you feel. I've been working from home for nine years now, and with two kids, 6 and 3. You don't realize until it's gone the benefits of having a "normal" job. There is never a night or a weekend that there's not the possibility (and probably need) that I could be working, and so even though I don't work as many hours as many do, I also never feel like I have any time off. The idea of coming home and *knowing* that I will not work until tomorrow would be great, I envy that. But it's been great being home with the kids, and so I don't really intend on changing anything until they're older. Still, there's a lot of downsides to working at home. Like you whenever I walk downstairs I'm really still thinking about work. |

I am an ASP.NET Web Developer. I work as a contractor for a government agency (OPM). We are a team of about 15 people and work on a long-term contract inside the building. We have no contact with the rest of our company so it feels much like we're part of the agency. We do, however, have the laid back feel of a private company. I've been doing this for about 9 years now (5 years here, but web development in general for 9).

I'm currently a Commercial Lending Credit Analyst. Graduated in 2007 from BU, started as an Assistant Branch Manager for my hometown community bank shortly after that, and then kind of leaped at this position when it became available last year. There's a possible opening for a new Commercial Lender at some point in the next year or so, so I'm hoping to snag that as a Jr. Comm. Lender in the (hopefully) not to distant future.

Okay for you IT/Techy types what specific degrees do you have? My son has just started college as a 17 year old who graduated as a junior. He is a computer person and since there sure were a lot of tech/IT jobs in the top 50 best job in America report i am trying to help him get a better grip on the field. I am also back in school to finish my degree/figure out what i want to be when i grow up (42 yrs old). Not sure where the mortgage industry is headed so i need to be prepared.

I went for two years and didn't finish. IMO he should do what he wants to do, not what he thinks will make the most money. The IT field is pretty lucrative, but if you're passionate about what you're doing you tend to work harder and be more successful at it. Also, the degree doesn't really matter. Having a degree is better than not having one, but I know Physicsts, English Majors, etc that are successful in the IT field.

I've been buying and updating for years, but it's almost too complicated to enjoy these days. Well and the lack of a community and no multiplayer makes it hard to really get into long term. I ran a community back in the day, but not enough people frequented it to make it all that interesting.
