The Chairman confirmed as dying in the accident, as presumed. Very sad news, he’ll be forever remembered for what he has done for the club and the city

And the other victims named: two members of Vichai’s staff, Nursara Suknamai and Kaveporn Punpare, pilot Eric Swaffer and Izabela Roza Lechowicz, who is listed as a passenger, but appears to be a pilot attached to the Polish embassy (and makes sense as reports said the copter would have had two pilots)
Edit - yes, they were both pilots, and were a couple too.

Weirdly I was alright about it until it was confirmed, and now I’m a little choked up about it tbh.

The closest thing I can think of for comparison would be if something had happened to Ted Turner during his heyday in Atlanta. My condolences to the club & its supporters.

Man, they might as well play the Spurs v Man City match in Spurs' unfinished stadium given the quality of the pitch at Wembley today.

yeah, strange that they wouldn't consider (at least not that i read about) a home/sway swap, playing today at City and then the 2nd half of the season matchup at Tottenham.

IIRC, City did not want to make the switch. I believe they would have been on the road something like three of four weeks if the switch happened.

I imagine the baseball equivalent of 3 goals in 18 minutes is like a 9-0 lead after 2 innings.

I’ve only watched a game there once, the 4-3 against Leicester (obvs!) that was the first game of last season, but I was amazed about how loud it was. Granted it was an amazing game, with multiple lead changes, but I honestly can’t remember any stadium being louder.

My guess is that Pickford did not want to concede a corner. That is the only explanation I can offer.

Looked to me like he was in between catching it and popping it over the net and misjudged where it was coming down. Which is a little understandable given the amount of spin on that ball. The best part of that video is watching Van Dyke spin around all pissed at himself and jogging back the other way as his team scores.

70,000 people are watching two U.S. based soccer teams compete for a title of a U.S. based soccer league. On a Saturday night. In Atlanta, Georgia.
As a kid whose father used to take him to Strikers games in old Lockhart Stadium, this is still shocking.

The crowds make absolutely no sense to me, but it's been enough that people who don't ostensibly care at least noticed. (Saw that several times in my social media tonight). I know one person who was a legit fan of the sport before Atlanta ever got a team who has gone several times. The others I know that have been are, well, trendy types.
Let's see how it goes once the seemingly inevitable downturn into mediocrity comes though. (Not an Atlanta dig, but losing the coach and apparently on the brink of selling on at least one key member if not others has me thinking mid table is in their future sooner than later)

Just back from the game. They market it to a demographic that cares about the sport. It's cheap to go to a game ($40/ticket for our season tickets/game) and when they open the top level the tickets are $25. Who wants to trek out to Cobb where there is no transit (and horrific traffic) or pay $150/game for a Hawks/Falcons. It actually makes perfect sense. Almiron will transfer to Newcastle or Serie A for a lot of money (I heard 20-25M being bandied) and Atlanta is deep bringing Villalba and Barco (the 15M man) off the bench. What is really to be seen is how the teams drawing poorly like NE will survive.
I would imagine if there were a team in Miami, San Antonio, San Diego, they would all do well.

You're talking about a concept that is pretty foreign to the average U.S. sports fan. Thanks to decades of FM I get it, I can at least says "sucks but that's how it works". Not sure a lot of the crowd is that savvy frankly. The next coach selection feels pretty enormous.

Losing the coach hurts more than losing Almiron, but Atlanta has been good about scouting and development. They did not make it far last season, but sold out every game this year and had 70k+ on the season opener. Looking over the MLS attendance averages and records set this year, a lot of teams could learn something here.
But I also wonder if the excitement will die down if they are a 3rd place team and get knocked out a few years in a row. But as I said, as long as ticket prices stay reasonable, people will come. Most of my buddies on Buford Highway would much rather watch mediocre soccer at the Benz for $25-50 than slightly above mediocre baseball/football/basketball for $100.

Bunch of people I went to high school with from an Atlanta suburb are huge fans. It was all over my FB feed this week and tonight. Most of them were into soccer back in the 80s though so I'm not surprised.

Love the fact that pretty much 20 guys are contributing, not missing a beat when guys get a rest or are injured. Witsel is amazing in centre mid, dominant as hell. On a much sadder note: The father of Stuttgart captain Gentner died in the stadium watching the Stuttgart-Hertha game ...

Miami had a team for 5 years and folded after drawing under 10k per game. They have an expansion team trying again in 2020 (the one Beckham co-owns), but it's been such a shitshow I doubt it'll have much success. Miami (and Chivas USA in East LA) had the sane problem where they assumed a large Hispanic population would automatically support them, but a lot of those first generation immigrants are still more loyal to leagues/clubs in their home country (plus in places with nice beaches sports are always a tougher sell!) Atlanta & a couple.others have shown you can get those fans to support you too, but it requires competence & outreach.. plus they didn't limit themselves to that market, but also reached out to the hipsters and suburban soccer playing family's. San Antonio has been in the running for an expansion team, and a potential Columbus move (before they were bought by a new owner). Though Austin is as well, and only one will.get it. (Just like Carolina where either Charlotte or Raleigh/Cary will get a team, but not both.) |

The upside is that he's played & coached in a similar system that's in place in Atlanta. The downside is not one but two flameouts in a row. Me? I'm thinking that if he can maintain the status quo with the roster & the personalities mesh then he'll be okay. If not then it could be another short stay.

The take around Atlanta seems to be (best I can tell) is that he's mostly tasked with continuing what's already in place. It sounds like maybe they picked him because "his own system" is close to what's already there?

I do think, Internazionale, but Crystal Palace in particular, didn't give him a fair chance to achieve anything. Stints of 3 and 2 months respectively. Sample size and all. At the same time, the four championships with Ajax came with unusually low point totals, whatever that's worth.

"The blind soldier fought for me in this war. The least I can do now is fight for him. I have eyes. He hasn’t. I have a voice on the radio, he hasn’t. I was born a white man. And until a colored man is a full citizen, like me, I haven’t the leisure to enjoy the freedom that colored man risked his life to maintain for me. I don’t own what I have until he owns an equal share of it. Until somebody beats me and blinds me, I am in his debt."- Orson Welles August 11, 1946 |

Emery needs to revamp the defense. The two signings during the winter are forgettable and Holding going down with an ACL hasn’t helped.
We’ll have to see how balancing workloads affect Liverpool and Man City during the second half of the year to determine the PL.

Just turned on the TV and the first thing I see is Rashford making fools of the Bournemouth defense and setting up Pogba. This is not the team we saw at Bournemouth earlier this season.

The boards inexplicable decision to not get rid of Mourinho earlier will cost United champions league football this year. Solskjaer is hardly a savant manager but he’s basically just let all the talent they have play and he’s got three very good results. Just a bizarre situation that he lasted as long as he did. |
