Celo is right, though... if McBride is standing in front of the goalie on an offsides position, he's involved in the play .

That's the first time I've seen a player that was onsides shoot the ball and have it called offsides. I don't buy the interference call, the guy was 15 feet away from the goalie.

By the rules as they are, McBride was only offside if he attempts to play or move towards the ball. So the question is was the flick an attempt to kick it or get out the way?

That's why this rule is dumb - under the old rules: offside, no question. Under the new rules there is this massive grey area. And the 50:50 calls are going against the US at the moment

Its because McBride moved out of the way. he blocked the ref, and by moving thereby affected the play. If an offsides player makes a play on the ball at all, offsides.

Again, Zambrotta fouled the US player, but it was never a yellow card

And that was not a yellow card offense for the Italian. This ref sucks.

I apologize if this comment is out of frustration, but I'd like to say something from the point of view of someone who doesn't watch soccer really. But honestly, people wonder why soccer isn't more popular here. I know this isn't a typical game persay, but how can any casual observer, tuning in to see they country play, be interested at all? All we see are Italians acting like "pussies" taking falls (getting "hurt" then all of the sudden being back 2 minutes later), questionable calls and a feeling of America getting cheated (whether they are or aren't), and just now a seeming goal that was discounted for a guy blocking the goal keeper (I understand that is a legit rule but it seems stupid to the casual observer).

Now I know falls are part of the game, the calls might not be really questionable, etc. But at the same time, who wants to feel like their team is getting cheating? I think someone tuning in to watch just this game is going to feel: "why should I care about soccer if it is just all this BS?"

Sorry if I am not making any sense.

Should that have been a yellow because of him being the last player back? I'm not sure of all the soccer minor rules...

Like I said, I had never seen that called during a shot on goal. The shot itself is usually the play. If he had deflected the ball, then yep, offsides, but a clean shot in the back of the net? That's a dubious call. If he was standing directly in front of the goalie, then yep. But 15 feet away, nope.

Not a dive per se, but more of a larger player just muscling another guy down. its always called a foul, but rarely a yellow.

Debates over officials' decision is part of what makes the game great. But you are 100% correct about the diving: it does threaten the games appeal IMHO.

nope. makes sense. even applies to those who do like the game and are fans. take me...i'm as big a futbol fan as anybody out there/on this board, but I just threw my hands in the air and turned to "i love the 80's" on vh1 when it became apparent that this ref was hellbent on ruining the game. frankly, like Troy said, I fully expect an Italian dive in the box to be called a PK and us to lose that way. This one particular game frankly just isn't entertaining enough for me to watch anymore, regardless of the fact that I don't get that many chances to see my national team play on tv.

The last yellow to the Italians was the wrong call. Just call a foul for chrissakes.

But, I have to say, this has been an awesome match, and the kind ofplay I was hoping to see in the Czech Republic match. Just fun to watch, albeit a little frustrating at times.

Hit the nail on the head... take an already hard to call rule and make it a complete judgment/situational call. Don't even bother to clearly define what "interfering" is. Of a number of moronic FIFA rules put in over the last 10 years, by far the worst.

I still think McBride was offside though, even under the new interpretations. Buffon couldn't see the ball at all because he was directly in his LOS.
