That was a terrible throw. How is Desmond Ritter paid to play football?

It is just bad coaching. According what I'm seeing, it was Bijan that ran the wrong route. He was supposed to be there and instead he was running the same route as Jonnu Smith. As hyped as he was as being a receiving threat, he can't has been awful as a receiver. It is the same problem with Pitts. He can run seams and simple routes. but ask him to read off the safety and he gets lost.

The UK coverage has just shown a Steelers play, and wow.

Diontae Johnson barely moved on an run to his side (albeit only just), then ignored the fumbled ball on the ground, and then didn’t bother chasing after the defender that recovered it.

It was twice as poor as anything Chase Claypool ever did

I saw that. That guy shouldn't be allowed back on the field for awhile.

Eagles have not nearly been as good this year as their record suggests and really should have lost to the Chiefs. Between this Bills game and their next two games, I figure they suffer at least two losses over the next three weeks.

What absolute bullshit roughing calls in this league. Dorian Thompson-Robinson got hit in the middle of a throw shoulder to chest and yes, he took a hard hit and may not even return, I don't know, but a hit that hurts someone is not necessarily a penalty. Jesus I hate the way they officiate in this league.

And then a fumble. That's a "ball don't lie" moment if I ever saw one.

Here's a statement that about 6 weeks ago would have sounded absurd:

The Broncos may really regret that loss to the Jets by the end of the year if it costs them a playoff spot.

So... the Red Zone channel studio has to evacuate because an alarm is going off. You could hear it on the TV. Wife and I were trying to figure out what we were hearing.

So they just left it on the Eages/Bills games and said sorry!

I sure as hell hope someone didn't burn their popcorn...

I'm not writing off the Bucs yet. They have two against the Panthers and one each against the Falcons and the Saints. Although the Falcons have the inside track and have Jets, Panthers and Bears.

I mean it always has been. The challenges didn't fix it either.

To revisit the roughing the passer thing. Did I hear right that they changed what is considered roughing the passer this year?

Jason Garret sucks. They just keep increasing how many analysts/commentators each station has, but none of them are worth a shit.

I find that I like Greg Olsen but I was trying to think of anyone else that's "good". I don't care for Romo or Collinsworth, really. TBH, I don't think I'm the target audience. I want insightful analysis without hyperbole. That doesn't really seem to be what they want to provide for me.

He's 61. Could just retire.

If not, I think that he's lost enough of his shine that even an OC position might be hard to find.

Could probably get on as a QB coach/offensive assistant somewhere.

So is this a "You told me to draft the Bryce Young guy You told me that you could make him the next Drew Brees. This is terrible." firing?

or

Is this a "I drafted the next Drew Brees and look what you did to him. This is terrible." firing?

I think Bobble hit on the answer. It's not so much that the commentators are 'good' or 'suck', but that they aren't doing what you want them to do - most likely because the broadcasters don't think that's what most of the fans/viewers are actually looking for.

I don't think so. A fair number of the people were talking about were objectively better at the exact same job a handful of years ago (Al Michaels, the whole Fox crew, etc) and they don't replace broadcasters/analysts that are long in the tooth they just add new ones at the ends of the table (or whole new tables) which only creates noise. Even if you love the current state of lowest-common-denominator sports commentary it's gotten obviously worse over the past few years.

I would agree with this. I think the commentators are broadcasting at like intermediate/advanced Madden game level. Yeah, you will get a bit of hardcore fan stuff but for the most part they are talking to the casual fans because well because the hardcore fans stop paying attention years ago. They have to entertain those folks. They don't have to entertain us. They could probably bring in someone who could talk at an expert level that will teach the hardcore fan things. I for one would enjoy that. Unfortunately I probably would not hear it because I would be explaining even more things to the casuals I may be watching the game with than I did before.

If there were no regards to costs, every game would be a multicast. A Nickelodeon type broadcast, a main broadcast similar to what we have now, and a broadcast with a panel of whoever is considered the best of people who played/coached/executive, an analytics person, and an gambling expert to cover that area. Different strokes for different folks

The best sports broadcasts are those where the connection with the commentators is lost, while the stadium crowd noise is still running.

But how much of that is a function of how much more we all hear now than we did then?

I mean, most people only heard a fraction of the crews once upon a time. Now? Now we hear a dozen or more a week a lot of times.

For sure that's a large part of it. As plenty of folks have noted, in here and elsewhere, it's an obvious strategy of "try to appeal to as many people as possible for as much time as possible" without much regard to the quality of what's going out, as long as something is getting broadcast 24/7. I think the amount of scripted/canned content has also increased over the years, and this feels like peak shitty NFL commentary in large part because the NFL media machine has gotten sophisticated enough to serve us content and games practically all the time, but not sophisticated enough to make all of it actually interesting or good.

...and the part that rubs me the most is I don't believe that even the casual fans enjoy seeing 4 dozen different analysts repeat canned opinions out of their earpiece, but I guess what I am undervaluing is that all of this constant, easily-digested content lowers the barrier of entry for new fans.

That's certainly a theory I reckon but at the same time ... who could POSSIBLY hear some of the stuff and think "hey, this makes me MORE interested"?

I mean, you can't really have a lower opinion of the average human being than I already possess but even I struggle to make that scenario work.
