I wonder if the debate B-team squad will be cleaned out by the next debate in mid-December.

That data on Carson would match my heavily Georgia-oriented social media streams anecdotal experience. I don't have any feeling that he's slipped more than 1-2 points in recent weeks, certainly not enough to fall to fifth or anything of that sort. I think it's possible that the establishment guys cannibalize each other in Georgia unless more drop out though.

Ben Carson Can't Place New England On A Map (PHOTO)
I know it's just a hapless staffer blunder, but I'm starting to think that the Carson problem is just the looming sense of everyone except the supporters he already has basically responding "seriously?" when informed that their conversation partner is supporting Carson. I know you're not pursuing the left-leaning with this campaign, but you do have to pursue the middle. I confess, though, I have been wrong so far about how long the surge could last... this process is playing out so oddly. It's great fun. |

The speculation was some graphic designer shifted the map, but for some reason, part of NE wasn't shifted along with the rest of it.
Well... and then no one caught it.

wondering if anyone has gone back and re-taken the isidewith.com survey, and how their results have changed in the few months since it was originally posted in this thread. i took it again, this time spending more effort on each question, and was surprised at the changes in matching candidates. (i am now clearly aligned with dems, getting
clinton 82% sanders 78% paul 65% I the makers of that website wanted, they could have an influence on some voters by skewing the results in a particular direction...

Speaking of isidewith, interesting little analysis tool they've added since I last looked (still in beta).
"Your Political Themes" Security vs Privacy You side extremely towards “Security”, meaning you very strongly believe the government should do everything within its power to ensure the security of its citizens. This theme is most important to you. There are like 10-12 of those, among the more interesting (and perhaps revealing about the questions they use for each) are me being exactly Centrist (0% lean) on centralization vs de-centralization and me being scored as moderately secular rather than religious (I can only guess that they weight abortion far too heavily)

There's definitely an established tier of candidates for me from isidewith
Rubio 93, Cruz 91, Santorum 91, Trump 90, Carson 90 (which is a higher score than he had previously IIRC) Fiornia & Bush 83, Huck 79, Paul 76 Graham 74, Kasich 69, Christie 64 Clinton 17, Webb 16 O'Malley 6, Sanders 3

I just took it, and no surprise Rubio and Cruz were tied for me at 93%. EDIT: It has me pegged as a right-wing libertarian which is how I describe myself. I have to admit, this nailed me fairly well.

I think the other interesting thing about the isidewith results are that they sort of help quantify where my lines are drawn. There really isn't anybody other than Huckabee that scored below 90 that I'd be willing to vote for in November.

There's a narrative out there that Trump has gained since the Paris attack. That seems false. His numbers haven't changed in the last couple of weeks. That's understandable, because his position (shoot first, ask questions later) is one likely echoed by his supporters.
The question with Trump is whether he's close to his ceiling. When others drop out of the race, who will they support? And the "second choice" data seems to indicate Trump is close to his ceiling. What has happened, however, is that Carson is in decline. So Trump has a lead again. Cruz is starting to pick up the right-wing votes. Fiorina, too, has declined quite a bit. She made a name for herself with her ability to control debates with a few sound bytes. They sound good. But the last two debates have shown that there isn't much else there. This is starting to look a little like "Trump versus the establishment." Last edited by Solecismic : 11-19-2015 at 03:16 PM. |

Isn't a great deal of the Carson/Trump support interchangeable? I thought polling was backing that up. Cruz could really survive this thing a long time, waiting for the far right guys to implode.

I think Cruz winning the nomination might be as entertaining as if Trump did.

I'm beginning to believe the conspiracy theories that Trump was a plant by the Clintons to give Hilary an easy general election win.

Haven't there only been two national polls released since the Paris attacks? Bloomberg, which showed Trump with slight favorable growth (51 to 55) among Republicans. And showed him as first choice +4 (21 to 25) and 2nd choice +10 (from N/A to 10). PPP, which showed him flat but also with the biggest lead (+7 overall) of any of the polls. edit to add: Are there polls you're referring to that RCP is ignoring?

Yeah, this is probably the one you mean http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/...Tmha3i47v2C.97 1/3rd of Republicans deemed Trump best suited to handle terrorism, Rubio was next at 17 percent. More importantly perhaps Of the Republicans polled, 36 percent said they now have more confidence in Trump's ability to be president - the largest show of support in the primary field. Only 10 percent said they were less confident in his abilities following the attacks.

Whether or not Trump is serious, his supporters are still excited by the same neo-facism. The years of tolerating and encouraging the fringe are coming back to haunt the party. God help us if Trump actually wins.

Regarding his comments about a database, I would not want a database on muslims only but I think a database that keeps tabs on foreigners/immigrants/refugees etc. is fine and the monitoring of them also. Effectively, there already is a database on them already as they come into the country and stay for a visit/school etc. It's a matter of keeping it more current and paying more focus on those that we are concerned about e.g. instead of a database field for "faith", there is one for "country of origin" |

Exactly how does this database work? Would you want weekly check-ins with a database officer? A national system that logs every credit card purchase? RFID implants?
Not only is the idea repellent for a free people, it's entirely unworkable.

Legal foreigners/immigrants are already tracked through the visa process, entering/exiting the country, employment etc. Note I'm not saying target a religious group. Credit Card companies are already tracking every purchase. I assume you are not saying the database/tracking is repellent but the purpose of the database/tracking is repellent? It certainly is not unworkable technically, what are you saying is unworkable? |

I think the title should be "Why Mass Immigration to U.S. doesn't fix worldwide poverty". Sure I agree with that. Selected, smart immigration policies will help the US. The US should be making it much easier for well educated to stay in the US (after the appropriate vetting process etc). I know this is not "fair" but it helps the US if we retain this talent. |

A database like that won't do anything to stop a terrorist attack, which is the only justifiable theoretical reason for such a database to exist. The only way a tracking database would be valuable for security purposes is to track people week to week or day to day or hour to hour. We do that for wiretaps for those individuals we're most concerned about, but we can't do that for millions of "foreigners." It would be either an incredible expansion of the security state or nothing more than security theatre, either explicitly contrary to our national values or unworkable.
