Can't argue against that move, other than it seems like strange timing. I guess it gives them a head start on the coach carousel?

I give it a 50% chance that Ron Rivera is the head coach of the Giants next year. (25% Shurmur is kept on, 25% Matt Rhule). A few weeks ago I would have said Shurmur was definitely staying on, but the owners are already saying "We'll get together at the end of the year and discuss our future". That's owner-speak for 'some people are about to get fired'. Either Pat is gone or there's going to be a lot of openings on his coaching staff.

That was pretty much the owner's explanation of it. That, and the timing being that he'd decided to make a change & didn't want to be soliciting replacements behind Rivera's back.

Tepper (the Panthers owner) was a former minority owner of the Steelers, so he has seen how a well run franchise that plays the long game does things.
He also is a hedge fund billionaire who isn't used to taking no for an answer for anything (His proposed team headquarters in South Carolina includes plans for a casino even though casino gambling is illegal in SC. His response was simply that a lot can happen in the time it takes to build a headquarters). It will be interesting to see if he embraces the Steelers model, or if he is more of a Dan Snyder impulsive-rich-kid-who-thinks-he-can-buy-a-shortcut-to-a-title type. As a Saints fan, I hope he's Snyder 2.0 :-) |

As a Rams fan this Snyder talk takes me back to the Greatest Show on Turf years. We had Tamap Bay as a NFC rival and the only team that I thought could consistently give the Rams problems. Then they announced some rich guy named Snyder was buying the Redskins and with his money was going to take them, and keep them, a top contender. I was nervous, there was another tough rival in the making! How did that work out? lol Turns out we were our own worst enemy forcing out Vermeil to keep the new shiny toy in Martz |

Exactly. In my mind if the Rams keep Vermeil and let Martz be someone's new head coach they get the 6-8 year run they should have had instead of the 3. Note Vermeil had no problem running a Martz type offense in K.C.. It's not like the man was a football dummy, he could take what he saw from Martz and build on it. Warner never leaves because Vermeil makes adjustments to protect him instead of, Martz the genius, never having to change anything because, well, he is a genius. |

Martz was good, but he had to have a top notch line. Every where he went where he had that, the offense was solid. However, most OCs can do well with a solid line. With Martz, if you have a slip up anywhere on your line, your QB would get killed. What turned me off of Martz was his flippant attitude towards turnovers. If you don't mind an INT on a 50 yard bomb on 3rd and long, that is one thing, but that mentality seeps over into not caring about an INT on 2nd and short on your 40 due to a bad read, etc. The assistant that Vermeil took to KC, Al Saunders was no slouch either running that KC offense. |

No argument on Saunders but to think Martz was the only coach that could keep or make a good run is wrong. If Martz had left for a HC job and Vermeil stayed he has Saunders in St. Louis instead of K.C. He has Warner and not Green (no disrespect to Trent Green but he was not Warner). You're right about the line but to me Martz's problem was he would never adjust, just put Warner on an island and if you hit him every play so what, he got the pass off didn't he? Under Martz people started to write Warner off, he did not look good anymore. Yet he was coming back with NY when Eli had to be given the job and in Arizona he was great again. Leaving St Louis he was certainly not going to the HOF. Even within the division I was happy to see Warner make a comeback and every time I saw Bulger\Martz I would think, what if? We had Warner and went to Bulger? Really? The cost of Martz's genius. |

Looks like Eli gets at least one more game. Daniel Jones down with a high ankle sprain.
This will be the first time the starting QB of the NY Giants will miss a game due to injury since December 13th, 2003. |

The hell of it, Martz changed that game plan a bit when Bulger was in compared to Warner. Conwell was a pretty big part of the offense when Warner was running things, but he stayed into block a lot more when Bulger was the QB. So in 2003 (I think that was the year), Warner got killed, but Bulger looked great because of the extra blockers helped against the blitz. I still wonder what would have happened had the Panthers not beat us in OT that year. That team was solid and on a run. |

Moving Martz to HC and pushing Vermeil out was the start of the downfall of the St. Louis Rams.

This whole Martz conversation reminded me that he was the Lions offensive coordinator for a while. I kinda forgot about that.

Lovely touch on the ball by Trubisky, right where only the Dallas CB can get it.

Yeah, and if I recall correctly against the Panthers the Rams had the ball at the end of regulation and sat on it letting the game go to OT instead of at least making some kind of effort to get to FG range. Lost the toss and never saw the ball. I don't recall time, down and distance, but it was the Rams offense. I do remember thinking WTF is Martz doing? |

Man, that's an awful block in the back call, which potentially cost the Bears 4 points, particularly when you consider the missed face mask on the same play.

This Cowboys team is so terribly coached.
Every team the Bears have played has made it a point to take away the crossing routes and the stuff out of the backfield. Force Trubisky to use the sidelines. Not the Cowboys. They're letting Nagy run the same stuff they were successful with last year. Stupid penalties Running back not understanding down and distance on his route Bad special teams |

WTF Cowboys? I just want to pronounce time of death on this Eagles' season but you keep the door wide open long enough so the Eagles and Wentz can f*ck up again.

Garrett is just a straight up terrible coach. Some of it is on Prescott’s inconsistency but still... they’ve mortgaged the future for a team with easily enough talent to win that terrible decision and they are just trying to fuck it up every which way possible.

Trubisky looking just competent enough to convince the Bears to roll with him for one more season is definitely my favorite subplot of the second half of the year

It was more of a reflection of the complete standard deviation busting, outlier scoring that took place.

Over the past 10 weeks Brady and Trubisky's numbers are eerily similar. I don't see him making it to 45. At least not with the Pats.

I try to not be a prisoner of the moment, but I think Brady is done. He just can't do it anymore. I honestly think BB wanted to keep Jimmy G and got overruled by Kraft.

Are we talking about that today if the refs didn't screw the Pats out of 2 TDs?
The entire discussion changes if they win. N'Keal Harry gets the TD there and the Patriots go on to win, the narrative today is about how great Brady was leading them to a comeback.

It would also probably helped him if the Pats invested in a WR (I know they brought in Brown). If he has Antonio Brown or anyone not named Edelman who could catch a pass, it may help.

The last three times Kyle Shanahan has played against a Dennis Allen defense, he has averaged 41 ppg. That's . . . not good for Dennis Allen.
Also, Drew Brees has now has 19 late game drives to take the lead or tie the game in games that the Saints eventually lost because the defense gave the game right back. |
