15 minute mark -

I entered this game with a plan to slow it way down and try to play good defense. Limit the number of possessions. So far, it is working, well sort of. Our offense is pathetic but our defense is hanging tough. We are up 3-2.

10:39 - We are up 9-7. McCurry is doing a great job defensively including 1 beautiful block. I rest McCurry, Blizzard, and Camara who are all tired.

5:45 - We are up 16-15. Detrick and Walton come into the game. Camara comes back into the game.

Halftime - We are down 24-19. We are shooting 29% from the floor yet are still hanging in there.

Shumate is the player of the half. He has 8 points and 4 assists.

Camara leads our team with 6 points. Mendoza has 5.

15 minutes - Farley is killing us. He's scoring and kicking it out to Guinn for 3's. They are up 37-22.

12:28 - Mendoza in for Camara. We are down 40-27.

9:31 - Down 46-29, I go to the entire 2nd unit.

We just don't have any guys who can create their own shot against superior athletes.

We lose the game 68-44.

Farley was the player of the game. 15 points, 13 boards, 4 assists, 2 blocks.

Shumate with 14 points and 6 assists against us.

Guinn with 14 points.

Camara led our team with 11 points on 4 of 12 shooting.

Mendoza with 5 points, 4 boards, and 4 assists. He shot 2 of 10.

Blizzard with 3 points, 1 board, and 1 assist. He shot 1 of 7.

McCurry with 4 points and 2 boards. He shot 1 of 6.

Didlake with 6 points and 2 assists. He shot 2 of 7.

Enzweiler with 7 points and 8 boards on 3 of 7 shooting.

For some reason this team just isn't fun to play with. I think they'll be a lot of fun in a year or so. I'm going to sim ahead this year. Hopefully, it doesn't cost me. I think we'll do good enough to keep my job safe, but if this recruiting doesn't turn around it could be bad for the future..

Jan 4, 2027 -

We win the game 87-64. Mendoza, Boxley, Blizzard, and Detrick all had 12 points. Blizzard led our team with 8 boards. Camara had 3 blocks.

Jan 9, 2027 -

USC (10-4) at ASU (10-5.) We have a slight talent advantage, but this will be a tough game on the road.

We pull out the win 69-64. Camara led the effort with 16 points, 8 boards, 3 assists, and 3 blocks. He shot 7 of 10. Blizzard with 12 and Mendoza with 9 points. Didlake had 8 assists.

Jan 14, 2017 -

We host Arizona (12-5.) They are favored over us even at the Galen Center. We lose 87-81. Camara had 20 points and 10 boards but Blizzard and Mendoza were both held in check and only had 7 points.

Jan 21, 2027 -

We play at the hated Bruins (10-7.) They are favored at home.

We pull out the surprise win, 81-69! Camara with a huge game, 22 points, 4 boards and 3 blocks. He shot 10 of 11 from the field.

Detrick was our 2nd leading scorer with 12 points off the bench. His outside shooting is helping him push Didlake for the starting job. Detrick is also showing the most growth of any player on my roster.

Jan 23, 2027 -

The tough road trip continues with a game at Washington. They are 14-4 and are 9th in the polls. We are heavy underdogs.

We lose the game 74-62. Detrick led the team with 10 points. I don't want to mess with our chemistry, but he is getting very close to being named the starter.

Camara and McCurry each had 12 points to lead the team. Didlake had 12 points and 6 assists. Detrick only had 4 points and 2 assists. Blizzard was held to 0 points. Mendoza had 6.

Jan 30, 2027 -

Toda we host Washington State (7-13.) We are heavily favored. We win the game 65-61.

Mendoza led our team with 15 points, 4 boards, 4 assists, and a steal. He shot 5 of 9.

Didlake with 12 points. Walton with 10. Blizzard was held to 2 on 1 of 7 shooting.

Feb 11 -

We are favored at Oregon State (9-14.)

We win the game 71-56. Camara with a career high 24 points and 10 boards. He shot 9 of 18. Detrick was our 2nd leading scorer with 8 points. He also led the team with 6 assists. Didlake was 0 of 7. I'm promoting Detrick to starter. He is showing explosive growth according to our coaches. It looks like he might live up to the potential that our staff thought he had.

Feb 13 -

This will be a very tough game at Arizona (16-8.) We are 17-7.

Detrick responds to the change in role with a career high 18 points and 7 assists! He also had 5 boards as he led us to an upset win 91-72!

Mendoza also had 18 off the bench. He also had 5 boards and 4 assists as he shot 6 of 10 and 3 of 6 from the arc.

Camara, Blizzard, and McCurry each had 10-12 points.

We travel to Oregon which will be a very tough game. They are 17-7.

We lose 82-56. Detrick led our team with 10 points and 5 assists on 3 of 6 shooting. Mendoza fouled out in just 20 minutes. Blizzard and McCurry with 9 points each. That loss makes 20 regular season wins very unlikely.

Feb 27 -

Today we play at Cal. They are 20-6 and are 21st in the polls.

We lose 88-70.

Boxley led the team with 13 points in 18 minutes off the bench. Detrick with 7 points and 4 asists. Blizzard was 0 of 5. Mendoza was 2 of 8.

Mar 6 -

We are 18-11. Our last conference game is against Stanford at home. They are 21-9 and 25th in the polls. They beat us again, this time 74-56. Camara led our team with 20 points and 12 boards.

I'm going to sim the conference tourney as well. This team isn't going anywhere this year, but next year should be a different story (or so I hope.)

A winnable opening round game against Oregon State (10-20.)

They upset us badly. 77-50. Blizzzard was 0 of 6. Mendoza was 2 of 9. Camara had 15 points and 7 boards. Detrick wiwht 3 points and 3 assists. He was 0 of 6.

There is no drama this year. I know this team isn't going to the Big Dance. I imagine we'll make the NIT.

Still, here is an abbreviated look at the NCAA Tourney Selection Show:

The #1's:

Pittsburgh (29-4), Xavier (30-3), LSU (30-3 ; darn, I'm competing with them for that PF), Rutgers (29-5.)

Cal is a 6 seed in the East. Wake Forest is a #2 seed in the East. Good to see my old team doing well.

Surprised to see Georgia Tech down at a 8 seed.

Stanford is a 6 seed in the South.

UCLA got a 8 seed in the Midwest after winning the Pac-10 Tourney. They are 21-13.

Washington (21-10) is a 9 seed in the West.

SEC and Big 12 have 7 teams in the tourney.

ACC has 6. A-10 and Pac-10 have 5. Big East and MWC have 4. Big Ten has 2.

We didn't even get invited to the NIT.

Definitely a rebuilding year.

Good news is that the administration believes in me. They just chose to renew my contract for 3 more years.

Arizona's coach retired and Arizona is offering me their job. I turn them down as well as Syracuse and Oregon State (their coaches also retired.)

McCurry was 3rd with his 8.5 ppg.

Boxley with 7.3 ppg and 3.0 rpg.

Blizzard with 6.9 ppg, 3.9 rpg, and 0.3 apg. He shot 37% on the year.

Didlake with 6.4 ppg, 4 apg, and 1 spg in 22 mpg. He shot 33% from the floor.

Enzweiler with 5.3 ppg, 5.1 ppg, and 1 bpg.

Now, let's hope I can turn this recruiting around and get some good pieces..

Absolutely brutal 1st day after the recruiting window opened. Valencia chose LSU over us and every single one of our other targets signed with other schools. We have 4 scholarships to hand out and we need to pick up the scraps now. Of course, sometimes there are some good scraps out there..

Our only target who didn't sign with anyone is a slow SG from Las Vegas named Fendi Bradford. He was really just a last option desperate backup plan and I don't think I even want to sign him unless I strike out these next few weeks. His only other option is UTEP.

One option out there is SF Branden Pait from Dallas, TX. I don't know much about him except that he averaged 11.4 ppg and 6.9 rpg in the ABL. He is a 4 star SF who is ranked 95th overall and 17th among SF's and he is interested in entering into the mix at USC. I offer him a scholarship and start recruiting him.

I also offer blindly to 4 star JC FR Gaston Randolph. He is from LA and is very interested in USC. I don't know almost anything about him except he is supposed to be a very good shooter. I have my assistant start breaking down everything about his game.

A week later:

Gaston rebuffs me for SDSU

I'm looking into Lyle Morales from Melbourne, FL. My staff is split on him. Some of them think he is a very athletic PG. Others think he is slow and isn't that good. He is a 3 star player who is ranked 401st overall, so he probably is slow and not that good..

3rd week:

Recruiting isn't going too well, so we take a huge flyer on Dusan Radenovic. He is a 3 star 6'5 205 pound SG from Serbia. I have very little idea what to expect from him.

4th week:

Radenovic jumps at our scholarship offer and signs almost immediately after being offered.

We also got Branden Pait. He'll enter the crowded mix at SF. He is 6'6 201. As mentioned, he is the 95th player overall and is a 4 star player. After looking at him more closely, our staff likes his potential and thinks he is going to be a good 3 point shooter right away. His defense will be his biggest question mark.

I still have 2 scholarships that I need to decide what to do with..

There aren't many good options out there, but I decide to go for potentially complimentary players and take another big flier..

We offer Sead Novakovic a 5'10 163 pound 4 star PG from Montengero who had offers from Notre Dame and Virginia Tech. I know nothing about him except our staff thinks he is a defensive stud from the tape they've seen.

I also offer Friedrich Lang, a 3 star SG from Little Rock, AR. He is ranked 142nd overall. He is 6'5 208 and is reportedly slow, but our staff thinks he has good potential to develop.

Both of those players accept our scholarship offers as the recruiting period ends.

Our class ranked 31st. Not a great class, but hopefully there will be 1 or 2 gems in there. We signed 3 4 star players and 2 3 star players.

The top 10 classes:

1. Pittsburgh - 3 5 star players.
2. FSU
3. Boston College
4. Villanova
5. Oregon
6. Washington
7. Florida
8. Georgia Tech
9. Stanford
10. Texas A&M

Hate seeing 3 Pac-10 Rivals up there.

A look at our roster at the beginning of the new year:

JR PG Armond Didlake - 6'1 180. Rated 81 overall. He's really improved his speed and athleticism in the offseason and is a much better player than he was last year. He's still only an average outside shooter and is a mediocre defender.

JR PG Steffan Detrick - 6'1 178. Rated 78 overall. He's an excellent outside shooter. He has better defense than Didlake but isn't as fast. However, he has improved and has good speed. He isn't as good of a passer.

FR PG Sead Novakovic - 5'11 170. Rated 70 overall. Could be a wasted scholarship. Our staff doesn't like his potential. However, for a freshman he is a good defender with excellent speed. Not much of an outside shooter. Worst passer of the 3.

SO SG Calvin McCurry is the undisputed starter. 6'4 227. Rated 81 overall. He has improved his athleticism this year and is really a standout in most areas. He's also improved his midrange jump shot. Defense still needs some work.

FR SG Friedrich Lang may play some minutes this year, or I might redshirt him and go with a SF at the backup SG position (more likely the more I think about it.) 6'5 210. Rated 73 overall. Not as bad speed as I thought he would be, he's average in that area. He is a phenomenal dunker with a great vertical. Could be valuable in a few years.

FR SG Dusan Radenovic - 6'5 212. Rated 66 overall. Could be a waste of a scholarship or might be a decent role player in a few years. Staff thinks he has potential. Unfortunately, he doesn't do anything well right now and he is below average in most areas. Will be redshirted.

JR SF Jon Paul Blizzard will continue to try to hold off Mendoza. 6'7 238, 85 overall rating. He's worked hard and his game is improving in many phases, but his outside shot is questionable and that could cost him to lose his starting job on this team. Great low post defender for a SF.

SO SF Brady Mendoza - 6'7 246, 81 overall rating. He isn't the defender that Blizzard is, but he is a much better midrange shooter. He just needs to remember that he isn't a very good 3 point shooter.. yet.

RS FR Kareem Humphrey - 6'8 205, 77 overall. His 3 point shooting will definitely put him in the mix for minutes. May play some backup SG as he has the best speed of the 3 SF's and his length could create some real nightmares. He is the 2nd best 3 point shooter in practice behind Detrick. The question is how will he do in actual games?

FR Branden Pait - 6'6 203. Rated 76 overall. I'm very pleased with him in the early practices. He is the 2nd best shooter among the SF's from the arc, but doesn't have Mendoza's midrange game. His defense needs a lot of work, but he could be very good. I'll probably redshirt him.

JR PF Robin Boxley has always been in my doghouse a bit due to his short size and light weight frame. However, he somehow grew an inch and has put on a few more pounds. He is now 6'7 205. He has worked hard and is tied for the highest overall rating at 85. Despite his size, he has great technique as a shot blocker with amazing vertical. With his vertical, he is the best dunker on my team. He has good speed for a PF and is a surprisingly effective rebounder. Also, he is the 3rd best 3 point shooter that I plan on playing. I may hold off on my plan of starting Enzweiler at PF and let Boxley start. He has earned it.

We have no other formal PF's on the roster except for a walk-on who is rated 56 and will never see the floor.

SO C Willis Enzweiler - 6'8 281, rated 79 overall. He hasn't developed an inside offensive game like I would like. Not a scoring threat, but a solid low post defender who is beomcing a very good shot blocker. Good speed for his size. Despite that, he might have hard time holding off Moye..

FR C Percy Moye - 7'0 223, rated 76 overall. Our staff likes his potential. He's already got a better inside offensive game than Enzweiler. He is a strong dunker. Defensively, he is a bit behind Enzweiler, but not by much. Stamina is a major concern. Speed is also a concern. Whoever doesn't start will backup both at PF and C which I think Enzweiler would be more able to do..

We don't have any scholarships available. Of course, I'll be busy recruiting tons of juniors for the following year, but this should free up some time for my staff to focus on developing the current roster.

Nov 10, 2027 -

We start the year off against Tulsa. They have a roster strength of 79. Ours is at 89. My starting 5 (which again has horrible team unity): Detrick, McCurry, Mendoza, Boxley, and Moye.

15 minute mark - McCurry is hustling all over the court and is a bit tired. Time for Humphrey to come in and add some offense. We are down 9-5.

13:20 - Didlake and Enzweiler come in at PG and C. Moye needs the break. Down 13-11.

10:28 - Humphrey hits his 1st 3! Mendoza is tired. Blizzard comes in. Down 22-17.

7:42 - Detrick and McCurry come back into the game. Down 24-21.

4:30 - Mendoza comes back into the game. We are up 34-32.

Halftime - Down 45-43. Our defense was horrible, but some nice offense today. Then again, we should be able to beat this team handily. I tell the guys to start playing tighter defense on their 2 main outside shooters.

Cassler has 16, mostly against Boxley. We'll see if Boxley can do a better job of stopping his jumper in the 2nd half.

Detrick leads our team with 10 points and 3 assists. Mendoza is 0 of 4

9 minutes - Mendoza will get a break. We are tied at 67.

4:30 - We are up 72-71. Time to get Detrick back in there, his outside shooting opens up the drive and kick game.

Seconds after coming in, Detrick buries a 3.

3:20 - It's tied at 75. I decide to get Mendoza back in for Blizzard who is struggling worse between the 2. Our starting 5 will finish this out..

McCurry has an open 3 rim out. A bit later, he misses a breakaway dunk. Down 77-75 with 2:30 left.

Detrick has the ball stolen. They turn it into a fastbreak dunk.

Mendoza with a nice post up move is fouled. He makes both FT's. Down 79-77 with 2 minutes to go.

Cassler goes right over Boxley down low. Cassler has 28 points and is shooting 83%.

Mendoza nails a quick 3! Down 81-80.

Mendoza with a block down low! That starts the fastbreak, McCurry is fouled. He makes both FT's! 82-81 lead with 1:17 left.

McCurry with a steal! He passes it to Detrick who passes it back to him for a slam dunk!

They try a quick pass into the post.. move by Cassler, Moye with the help.. he blocks the shot. Moye with a great debut!

We work the clock down to 5.. Mendoza shoots over his man.. and misses. They attempt a quick 3.. it misses, but they get the board. We foul inside. They hit both FT's. 84-83 with 13 seconds left.

An advantage of Detrick over Didlake is that Detrick is a much better shooter. He is fouled with 11 seconds left.. he misses both FT's! But, Moye gets the offensive board! He is fouled.

Moye hits 1 of 2. With 3 seconds left, they go for the 3 to win.. it bounces out. Taylor, their center, gets called for over the back. Moye was the one who was fouled..he misses the first.. but makes the 2nd. 86-83 lead with 1 second left.

The desperation 3 misses.

We win the game 86-83. Tougher than expected, but still a satisfying win.

Detrick wins player of the game. He had 15 points, 7 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, and 3 turnovers. He shot 4 of 10, 3 of 5 from the arc, and 4 of 6 from the line. He played 30 minutes.

Didlake with 1 point sna 2 assists in 10 minutes. He shot 0 of 4.

McCurry with 16 points, 2 boards, 1 assist, and 1 steal. He shot 3 of 12, 2 of 5, and 8 of 8. He played 25 minutes.

Hmphrey with 12 points, 3 boards, and 2 turnovers in his 15 minutes of backup SG work. He played credible defense as well.

Mendoza bounces back from a very rough start to finish with 15 points, 2 boards, 1 assist, and 1 steal. He shot 4 of 12, 2 of 2, and 5 of 6. He played 28 minutes.

Blizzard with 2 points, 1 board, and 1 assist in 12 minutes.

Boxley with 7 points, 6 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block in 30 minutes. He was dominated by Cassler on the other end though.

Moye with the debut of the night! 12 points, 13 boards, 3 assists, and 4 blocks! He didn't look slow at all tonight. He shot 5 of 5 and was 2 of 4 from the line. His only blemish was 3 turnovers.

Enzweeiler with 6 points, 3 boards, and 1 assist in 20 minutes. He shot 1 of 5.

Back to the plan of playing 1 and then simming 1.

Nov 23, 2027 -

Today, we host Drexel. They are 3-1, but their roster strength is only a 71.

We win the game 76-58.

Boxley with 22 points, 6 boards, and 2 blocks.

Detrick with 11 points and 5 assists. McCurry with 4 points, 5 boards, and 4 assists.

Mendoza and Blizzard each had 11 points. Moye with 6 points, 6 boards, and 2 blocks.

Our next game is 1 day later at Hawaii. The guys deserve a bit of beach time, but first we'll have to take care of a solid Hawaii team. They are 1-3, but they have a 79 roster strength. They have a good SR SG who is very fast and will be a test for McCurry as well as a talented but undersized center who is 6'7 231. I'm looking forward to seeing how Moye does against him. The rest of their roster is in the mid 60's or lower.

15 minutes - Up 10-8.

14:23 - Enzweiler in to give Moye a short break.

12:03 - Both sides exchanging a few 3's. We are tied at 18. We bring in Humphrey and Blizzard.

10:02 - Didlake comes in and Moye returns. Up 24-21.

6:10 - They are on a 8-0 run. We are down 29-25. I bring back all of my starters. We are turning it over far too much.

4:13 - They score 14 unanswered before Moye uses a nice post move to score from 4 feet. Down 35-27.

We finish the half strong.

Halftime - Down 37-34.

Moye is leading our team with 8 points and 8 boards.

Their SG is the player of the half with 11 points and 3 steals.

15:39 - Moye is tired. We are down 45-39. Enzweiler comes in for Moye.

11:30 - Entire 2nd unit (only 9 deep) is in with Moye coming back at center. We are down 54-47.

7:51 - Humphrey hits a 3 to give us the lead, 59-56.

5:02 - Boxley in for Enzweiler. We are up 65-62.

2:46 - They take a 68-67 lead. I get the rest of my starters back into the game.

Detrick hits a 3 to give us back the lead.

Good defense/bad offense the rest of the way. 35 seconds left when Moye gets a rebound and is fouled. He misses both FT's.

They run the clock down to 4 seconds.. they get an open 3... and miss it. Moye with the rebound and he quickly passes it to Detrick who is fouled.

He hits the 1st and misses the 2nd. The 3/4 of the court 3 misses.

We win the game 71-68.

Moye is the player of the game with 12 points, 13 boards, and 1 block. He shot 6 of 8 from the floor and 0 of 4 from the line.

Detrick with 13 points and 2 assists. He shot 3 of 10.

McCurry with 5 points and 1 board. He shot 0 of 7 from the field.

Mendoza with 10 points, 4 boards, 4 assists. He shot 4 of 10 and 2 of 2 from the arc.

Boxley with 10 points, 4 boards, 2 assists, 4 steals, and a block. He shot 2 of 5 and was 6 of 7 from the line.

Blizzard with 4 points off the bench. He shot 1 of 5.

Didlake led the bench with 6 points and 3 assists.

We don't have any scholarships available, but a bit of recruiting news:

The #2 player in the nation (#1 PG) is from Reno, NV and he chose Stanford. Great, I'll have to face him for 4 years after Shumate goes pro.

The #1 player in the nation, a PF from Cincinnati, chose to go to West Virginia. They are building a powerhouse there.

Oregon got the #8 player in the country, a PF from Portland Oregon.

Xavier has already signed 2 guys in the top 20. LSU has as well.

Nov 29, 2027 -

We host Rhode Island. They are 4-3 with a roster strength of 80.

We beat them 64-58. Detrick led the team with 13 points and 5 assists. Balanced scoring otherwise. Mendoza, Boxley, Moye each with 7 points. Enzweiler, Humphrey, and Blizzard each with 6 off the bench.

Boxley and Moye each sprained their wrists in the game. They will be day to day for 2 weeks.

Our next game is 2 days later and it is hosting Jackson State. They are 3-6. Their roster strength is 70. Their SG and SF are decent, but the rest of the team is rated in the 60's or 50's.

Just curious, why did you max out the scholarships last year at the end for questionable quality rather than saving 1-2 for this year? Was it an option to roll a scholarship or two over a season?

18:06 - Detrick has picked up 2 fouls, but I'm leaving him in for now. Tied at 2.

13:05 - Moye gets a break. We are down 9-4!

10:45 - I bring in the n2d unit with Boxley staying at PF. We are down 13-4.

Didlake takes over! First, he hits a 3. Then, he steals and dunks it. Then, he blocks a shot and gets the carom and has another fastbreak dunk! With just under 9 minutes left, we are tied at 13.

7:52 - Boxley picks up his 3rd foul. He is tired. We are down 17-13. I bring back Moye with Enzweiler sliding to PF.

3:25 - Down 27-22, I bring back all of my starters except Detrick. Didlake is playing out of his mind right now, so I'm riding him for a while.

Halftime: Down 33-27. This team just doesn't have enough consistency - it's going to prevent us from doing much unless we can pull it together.

Didlake leads our team with 13 points. He is constantly getting into the lane. He also has 2 assists. He's tired now, and we'll go to our starters for the 2nd half's beginning.

15:49 - Boxley picks up his 4th foul, but I'm keeping him in the game because it is Moye who needs a break right now. We are down 39-33.

10:47 - We are down 51-46. Our defense has been atrocious. I'm going to Didlake, Humphrey, Blizzard, Enzweiler, and Moye.

Didlake is instant offense/defense again! 2 quick steals, 2 quick fastbreak dunks! He hits another jumper to put us up 52-51.

6:01 - Didlake and Humphrey are the offense right now. We are up 58-54.

3:21 - Up 64-58. Mendoza and McCurry come back. Didlake will get to finish this out unless he fouls out.

3:10 - Moye fouls out. Boxley will return to the game.

Our offense explodes in the last 3 minutes. Didlake with a few nice assists got McCurry going.

We win the game 76-63.

Shouldn't have been that close most of the game, but at least we finished strong. Didlake made a strong statement to be put back as a starter. If he can repeat today's performance in 1 or 2 more games, he'll be the starter again.

Didlake was the player of the game with 21 points, 5 assists, 2 boards, 3 steals, 1 block, and 1 turnover. He did all of this in 22 minutes off the bench. He shot 6 of 8, 1 of 2, and 8 of 12 from the line.

Detrick against the same guy was 1 of 5. He had 4 points, 1 assist, 1 steal, and 1 turnover. He just couldn't blow by his defender like Didlake did.

McCurry with 14 points, 2 boards, and 1 assist. He shot 6 of 11, 2 of 3, and 0 of 0.

Mendoza with 10 points, 2 boards, 2 assists, and 5 steals. He shot 2 of 9, 1 of 3, and 5 of 8.

Boxley with 3 points, 2 boards, 2 assists, and 2 steals. He shot 1 of 5.

Moye with 6 points, 9 boards, and a block. He shot 3 of 5.

Humphrey with 8 points on 3 of 4 shooting.

Enzweiler with 8 points and 9 boards in 29 minutes off the bench.

Blizzard only scored 2 points. He was 0 of 3 from the floor.

It was an option and it was just a horrible tactical mistake that I regret.

Our next game is at Missouri. They are 3-3, but they are a very talented team with a roster strength of 87.

We fight hard, but lose the game 76-73.

Mendoza led the team with 15 points. He also had 6 boards and 2 assists. He shot 5 of 11 for the game.

Detrick with 14 points and 4 assists. He shot 5 of 6.

Didlake with 10 points and 2 assists off the bench in only 16 minutes.

Our next game is against Winston-Salem State. They are 2-8. Their roster strength is 70. They don't have any quality starters. I'll play them tomorrow.

16:01 - McCurry picks up his 2nd foul but will remain in the game for now. Tied at 3.

9:50 - Up 17-10 as I bring in the 2nd unit.

6:02 - Humphrey's shot isn't falling. I decide to go with Blizzard at SG and get Mendoza back in. Up 22-16.

We have a 6 minute stretch where I feel like my team is finally clicking, even though it is against a weak opponent it is good to see.

Halftime: Up 39-22.

McCurry is the player of the half with 8 points and 1 assist.

Blizzard and Didlake with 6 points. Detrick, Boxley, and Moye with 5 each.

14 minute mark - Detrick is driving at will now. Our defense had a 2 minute lapse that was horrible but has otherwise been great. We lead 60-30 as Detrick is getting everyone involved but McCurry is the man on fire. I'm seeing that he is a very streaky shooter.

9 minutes - Time to pull the starters. We are up 70-34.

Due to the short bench (which is from a few redshirts) and the desire to try to keep them under 50, I keep Moye in with the bench. During this stretch, Moye starts taking some 12-16 footers when he is open and he makes 3 in a row. If he can do that consistently, our offense will be much better.

We win the game 90-50.

Moye is the player of the game. He had 19 points, 6 boards, and 2 blocks. He shot 6 of 7 from the floor and 7 of 12 from the line.

Detrick with 9 points, 8 assists, 4 steals, and 5 turnovers. He shot 4 of 6. He played 20 minutes.

Didlake with 9 points, 6 assists, 3 steals, and 1 turnover. He shot 2 of 3. He also played 20 minutes.

McCurry with 17 points, 2 boards, and 2 assists. He shot 6 of 9, 2 of 4, and 3 of 4.

Mendoza with 7 points, 7 boards, 3 assists, and 6 steals. He shot 2 of 7.

Blizzard with 8 points, 2 boards, 2 assists, and 2 steals. He shot 4 of 6.

Enzweiler with 4 points, 6 boards, 1 assist, and 1 steal. He shot 1 of 2.

Humphrey with 6 points and a board. He shot 2 of 5.

Dec 20, 2027 -

Next up is hosting San Francisco. They are 4-7 and have a roster strength of 79.

We win the game 66-59, but suffer a costly injury as Didlake suffers a severe ankle sprain. He is out 3-4 weeks and will miss the first few weeks of conference play.

Blizzard lead the team with 15 points and 6 boards in 20 minutes off the bench.

McCurry and Boxley each had 12.

I hate to do it, but I'm going to pull Novakovic's redshirt and play him at the backup PG for the next few weeks. My assistant lets me know that this would prevent me from redshirting him again in the future, but I have to do it.

Dec 24, 2027 -

Tonight, we play in the first game of the Golden Bear Classic. Our fist ooponent is Pacific. They are 4-7 and their roster strength is a 74.

Their only quality starters is JR PF Drew Dasilva who is 6'10 216 and is rated 78 overall. Their center is 6'10 250 and is rated 70 overall. The rest of the starters are in the mid 60's. The bench is in the 50's.

14:00 - Our offense is really clicking. Guys are running the plays much more efficiently lately. I give Moye a short break. We are up 13-6.

9:02 - I get Moye back into the game. We are up 23-17.

7:30 - Moye picks up a 2nd foul. He'll get another break. We are up 25-20. My entire 2nd unit comes into the game.

Halftime: We are up 39-31.

Their SF torched Blizzard/Mendoza for 15 points.

McCurry is our player of the half. He has 11 points on 4 of 6 shooting.

Boxley and Blizzard with 7 at the half.

11:41 - They have closed within 3. 50-47. I call a timeout and yell at the guys to play some defense.

Mendoza drills a 3 out of the timeout.

Moye with a block that sets up a 2-1 fast break.. Detrick to Mendoza for an alley-oop dunk!

20 seconds later, their SF shoots yet another 3 on Mendoza who wasn't able to stay in front of him. 55-50.

7:52 - Their SF is a stone cold scorer. I'll have to take a closer look at his tape after the game to see what makes him so special. He has 30 and is keeping them in it. 58-52 lead as I rest all of my starters except Boxley for a few minutes..

3:55 - Blizzard just hit a huge 3. I bring back all of my starters except for Mendoza. I'm going to let Blizzard stay in as long as he is shooting well. 65-61 lead.

3:07 - Their SF hits a 3 to tie it at 66!

Blizzard responds with a nice post up basket and the foul. He misses the FT. At the other end, he plays good defense and forces a miss by their SF.

With 7 seconds left, McCurry with a crossover beats his man and gets into the lane for a foul. He hits both FT's then he steals the ball in the backcourt with our full court trap. He passes it to Detrick for a quick 12 footer that is good. We are up 72-66 with 1:04 to go.

They come down and set up a quick pick and roll. They pass out of that and find the SF in the corner. He shoots over Blizzard and makes the 3! He has 34 points now.

They foul Enzweiler down low. 39 seconds left. He makes both FT's.

Blizzard steals the pass heading towards their SF, he passes to Detrick who throws it back to Blizzard for a dunk! That helps finish off any momentum they may have had.

We win the game 78-69, but their SF Shimokawa is the player of the game (maybe the first time I've ever seen the game actually pick a player from the losing team, but it was certainly justified here.)

Shimokawa is a SR who is 6'7 222, so he had good size going for him. He has an insane vertical and nothing else that I see that would make him such a good shooter. I guess he was just on a hot streak tonight. Before this game, he was averaging 9.2 ppg and this is a new career high for him.

He finished with 34 points, 7 boards, 2 assists, and 2 steals. He shot 11 of 18, 7 of 10 from the arc, and 5 of 6 from the line.

McCurry led our team with 18 points and 1 steal. He shot 6 of 10, 3 of 5, and 3 of 3.

Detrick with 7 points, 6 assists, and 2 steals. He shot 2 of 5.

Mendoza with 12 points, 2 boards, and 2 assists. He shot 3 of 9.

Blizzard with 14 points and 3 boards off the bench. He shot 5 of 5 for the game including 2 of 2 from the arc.

Boxley with 9 points, 6 boards, and 4 steals. He shot 3 of 11.

Moye with 4 points, 8 boards, 3 assists, and 2 blocks. He shot 1 of 4.

Enzweiler with 7 points and 8 boards.
Humphrey with 5 points and 2 boards.

Novakovic wasn't terrible in his debut. He scored 2 points, 1 assist, and 1 turnover in 12 minutes. He didn't shoot from the floor at all.

1. Washington continues to stockpile talent. They have their strongest roster in a few years. They have bonafide stars starting at every position. Roster strengh of 95. They are 9-2. They blew their first game against CS Northridge and also lost to a very good Ohio State squad. They are 17th in the polls.

2. Oregon has a weak frontcourt, but they have stars at PG, SG, and SF and excellent depth. Their overall roster strength is 91. They are 11-1.

3. Stanford is starting 2 freshman, albeit very talented freshman, at PG and C. Mustafa Hull was one of the top 10 players in the nation last year and Stanford beat us in his recruitment. Still, he isn't quite as good as our veterans yet. Farley is the main superstar on their team. Overall roster strength of 90. They are 11-2.

4. California is 11-1 and is highest of the Pac-10 Teams in the poll at 7. They are weak at PG and SG, but they have a superstar at SF in Barry Esterkamp (who I recruited hard my first year here.) Overall roster strength of 89. Their center and PF are both very solid.

5. USC's roster strength is now 89. We are 9-1. Our staff believes Detrick is continuing to show rapid growth. With Didlake's injury, Detrick is our starter for the year unless he starts bombing badly. Didlake will be a great sub when he gets healthy. Humphrey is also showing excellent growth and will continue to get more minutes at SG/SF off the bench.

6. Arizona is in a bit of a rebuilding mode with a FR at PF (another very good PF who I went after) as well as sophomores at PG and SF. However, their have a lot of talent and they have a star center, Roger Clifford. Overall strength of 86. They are 8-4.

7. UCLA has been struggling a bit in recruiting. They are starting two freshman who are just average. Their SG and PF are both young but talented. Their junior center is their most reliable scorer early. Strength of 86. 7-5 record.

8. Arizona State has a very good player at SF in SR Ian Prince. They have a very good center and the rest of the starting 5 is just average at best. They are 10-2 thanks to an easy schedule. Strength of 84.

9. Things are bleak at Washington State. They are starting 4 seniors and none of them are that great. However, team unity should be good and they will win some games in the Pac-10 this year. 6-6 record so far. 83 roster strength.

10. Oregon State is building for the future. They have a freshman PG who has good potential but will struggle this year some. They are starting 2 sophomores at SG and SF and 2 juniors. This young team will struggle a bit. Strength of 81. Record of 6-4.

Washington is leading the conference in scoring (79 ppg), rebounding (35 rpg), assists (15 per game), and blocks per game (7.2.)

We are leading steals per game at 11.

Washington has the best overall player, SR PG Omar Davidson (who is projected to be the #1 pick in the draft next year at this point.) Obviously, he also is selected as the conference's best pro prospect. He is also the best play maker in the conference.

Washington also has the best shooter in the conference, SO SH Damir Boxley.

Oregon is believed to have the best freshman in the conference, SG Russ Grimes. He is from Seattle and I couldn't get him to come south. He is only averaging 5.1 ppg in limited minutes so far. He'd be starting for us if we had gotten him.

Arizona's Clifford is the best defender.

We start our Pac-10 schedule with what should be an easy game, Oregon State at our place. Their top player is SG Jerrold Kately and he is rated 80 overall and is 6'1 193. Freshman PG Jay Woodard is a very dangerous 3 point shooter who has nice size, 6'4 220. He is rated 75 overall. The rest of the team aren't that good offensively.

14:48 - We are up 12-8, but Moye just picked up his 2nd foul. He's going to need to play smart because we need him this game. Mendoza has come out on fire this game.

11:01 - Woodard is their main threat right now. He has 9, all on 3's. Mendoza is lighting it up for us. He has 12 already. We are up 21-17. I turn the game over to the 2nd unit for a few minutes.

8:38 - Boxley just picked up his 3rd foul. I've got a few guys in foul trouble. Hopefully, Moye and Enzweiler can go the rest of the half. We are up 25-22.

4:04 - Oregon State is on a 8-0 run and just took the lead on a 3. 31-30. I bring back all of my starters except for Boxley.

Mendoza picks up right where he left off and drills a 3.

Detrick picks up his 3rd foul with 1 minute left. I'm leaving him out there..

Halftime: We are up 37-35.

Mendoza is the player of the half with 20 points, 1 board, 1 assist, and 2 steals. Could this be his major breakout game?

18:20 - Moye picks up his 3rd foul. He'll remain in the game for now.

14:10 - A full fledged track meet has broken out today and our home crowd is loving it. We are up 57-46.

9:37 - I'll give my starters a break now that they have built up a nice lead. 63-46.

Boxley picks up his 4th foul seconds after entering the game.

4:36 - 67-53, I get my starters back in except for Boxley who is playing poorly and has 4 fouls. I use Mendoza at PF and Blizzard at SF.

We win the game 77-58.

Mendoza is the player of the game with 31 points, 2 boards, 2 assists, 1 block, and 2 steals. He shot 11 of 19, 6 of 10, and 3 of 4. Hopefully, this can be the springboard to a strong showing in the 2nd half of the season.

Detrick with 12 points, 6 assists, 3 boards, and 3 steals. He also had 3 turnovers. He shot 3 of 11.

McCurry with 9 points, 2 boards, 1 assist, and 2 steals. He shot 2 of 10.

Boxley with 4 points and 6 boards.

Moye with 5 points, 12 boards, 2 assists, and 1 block.

Blizzard with 4 points and 2 assists in 20 minutes.

Enzweiler with 3 points, 5 boards, 2 assists, and 2 steals.

Humphrey with 7 points in just 12 minutes. He shot 3 of 5.

Novakovic with 2 points and 3 turnovers in 12 minutes. He had 0 assists.

Today we host ASU in what should be a good game. They are now 10-3 (0-1.)

A very disappointing upset. We lose 68-56.

Mendoza was great with 17 points, 6 boards, 2 assists, and a block.

Boxley was also great with 16 points, 5 boards, and 4 blocks.

However, no one else showed up and Detrick fouled out in 22 minutes. As a result we had to play Novakovic more and he was a disaster. He scored 0 points, 0 assists, and 3 turnovers in 20 minutes.

McCurry with 4 points on 2 of 10 shooting.

Blizzard with 4 points on 2 of 9 shooting.

Moye with 0 points and 5 boards. He shot 0 of 4.

Humphrey only took 2 shots in 12 minutes and missed them both.

Our next game will be a very difficult game at Oregon. They are now 13-1 and 13th in the polls. A look at their key players:

JR SF Hensley Stapley is 6'6 204 and is rated 88 overall. He is an excellent shooter and a good defender. He has great athleticism. He is averaging 10 ppg, 4 rpg, 2 apg, and 1.5 spg.

JR PG Sylvester Maye is 6'0 167 and is rated 87 overall. He is one of the top 2 shooters in the conference. A deadly 3 point shooter and he has elite speed, handle, and quickness. He is averaging 20.7 ppg, 4.4 apg, and 1 spg.

SO SG Clarke Lindeman is 6'8 206 and is rated 85 overall. The tall lanky shooter has a great stroke from the arc. He is also an excellent shot blocker for a SG. He has tremendous leaping ability. He is averaging 12.2 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 3.3 apg, 1.3 spg, and 1 bpg.

SO PF Mensah Norton is banged up but will play. He is 6'7 244 and is rated 78 overall. He is averaging 6.4 ppg and 3.6 rpg.

SO PF/C Rashon Hazel is 6'8 247 and is rated 79 overall. He is a very good post defender. He is averaging 7 ppg, 6 rpg, and 1 bpg.

The bench is led by JR PG Mitch McCleod. He is a 6'3 185 pound PG who is rated 86 overall. He has tremendous atheltic ability and is a decent shooter. He is averaging 9 ppg.

FR SG Russ Grimes is banged up but he'll still play. He is 6'4 206 and is rated 80 overall. He is very athletic and has a tremendous first step. He is averaging 5 ppg and 1.5 rpg.

The rest of their bench is all rated in the mid-high 70's.

14:26 - Mendoza with a drive into the lane draws a 2nd foul on Hazel. We are down 6-4. Our defense is flying all over the place.

10:48 - So much for the good defense. We are down 16-6. Stapley is drilling the 3's. I bring in a few bench players.

3:58 - Thanks in part to a very slowed down offense, our defense is playing it's best game, considering how talented they are offensively. Despite that, we are down 25-16. Detrick needs a break and this could get ugly at the point..

Wow. Novakovic was respectable including a steal and breakaway that he was fouled on. More importantly, McCurry got on one of his streaks.

Halftime: Down 28-26.

Maye is the player of the half with 8 points and 2 assists. Detrick is doing a great job containing him.

McCurry is the leading scorer in the game with 9 points.

Blizzard with 7. He'll get more minutes in the 2nd half if Mendoza doesn't sstart hitting his shots (he is 0 of 6 right now.)

19:10 - McCurry with a drive, a foul, and the basket. The 3 point play gives us our 1st lead of the game. 29-28.

17:29 - Mendoza draws a 3rd foul on Stapley. He hits the 1st, misses the 2nd, but Boxley gets the offensive board. Mendoza hits a 3 to put us up 33-32.

14:48 - McCurry with a brilliant drive, creating contact with the center, and hitting a circus shot after being fouled! He makes the FT to put us up 41-34! During this stretch, Detrick hit a 3 and Mendoza hit a 2.

11:14 - Mendoza hits a 3 to put us up by double digits! 50-39. This would be a great road upset for us...

Mendoza follows it with a steal and breakaway dunk!

After we get a stop, Mendoza pump fakes his man, drives by him and gets an uncontested tomahawk dunk!

8:58 - Mendoza draws a 4th foul on Stapley. Our ability to keep him in foul trouble has been crucial tonight. We are up 58-41 as Mendoza and McCurry have both been on fire.

7:43 - Mendoza and McCurry are both exhausted. I rest most of my starters. Still 58-41.

3:48 - Detrick, who I planned on playing the whole 2nd half just fouled out. They are charging back. 61-47.

2:31 - They cut the lead to 9. 63-54 after Stapley hits a pair of 3's. I get McCurry and Mendoza back into the game.

Immediately after coming into the game, McCurry hits a 3 with 5 seconds left on the shot clock.

Mendoza hits a 3 on our next possession and that seems to take any fight left out of them.

We pull off the huge upset, 69-54.

McCurry wins player of the game with 24 points, 2 boards, 2 assists, and 2 steals. He shot 6 of 11, 2 of 5, and 10 of 10.

Mendoza also had a huge game. 22 points, 2 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, and 1 block. He shot 8 of 15, 3 of 5, and 3 of 7.

McCurry held Lindeman to 1 of 8 shooting which is our biggest shock of the night. He physically owned him at the other end and was able to use his superior size/speed combination to drive into the lane a great deal.

Mendoza got Stapley into foul trouble which limited him to 16 minutes. Otherwise, I think they would have won the game. As it was, Stapley had 12 points on 5 of 6 shooting in his limited time on the floor.

Moye owned Hazel. Their top scorer off the bench was Grimes with 6 points.

Detrick only ahd 3 points, 2 boards, 2 assists, and 2 steals, but he played great defense on his man.

Boxley with 2 points, 5 boards, 2 assists, and a steal. He shot 0 of 4.

Moye with 4 points, 9 boards, and 2 blocks. He shot 2 of 6.

Blizzard with 7 points off the bench. Once Mendoza started getting off, it limited his minutes tonight.

Our next game is 2 days later at Washington State. Will the emotional win cause us to fall to this team that we should beat?

Nope. We beat them 79-62.

Detrick with 14 points and 3 assists. Blizzard led all scorers with 16 points and 6 boards in 22 minutes off the bench. McCurry and Blizzard each had 8. Moye with 9 points. Novakovic with 8 points and 2 assists in 12 minutes!

Jan 10, 2028 -

Didlake is now 100% and able to return to the lineup. Our next game is in 3 days hosting Cal. They are now 11-4 (0-3.)

Their offense revolves around SR SF Barry Esterkamp. He is 6'8 225 and is rated 87 overall. He is fast, strong, and is a good midrange shooter. He is averaging 13.4 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 1.2 apg, and 1.1 spg.

SR PF Antwcan Konare is 6'10 231 and is rated 82 overall. He should be a very difficult match for Boxley. He is averaging 9 ppg and 7 rpg.

JR C Ronald Hanson is 7'2 270 and is rated 80 overall. He'll be very tough for Moye to handle. He is a strong guy who has developed a nice post game. He is averaging 21 ppg, 6 rpg, and 1.3 bpg.

JR PG Andrea Ward is 6'0 192 and is rated 79 overall. He is a bit slow and doesn't have any great skills. He is averaging 6 ppg and 5 apg.

JR SG Darwin Hammond is 6'2 178 and is rated 78 overall. He is a decent shooter. McCurry should be able to beat off him off the dribble. He is averaging 6 ppg.

The bench is strongest at PF and C.

JR PF Salvador Weaver is 6'9 238 and is rated 81 overall. He is an excellent shot blocker. He is averaging 2 ppg and 1.4 bpg in just 12 mpg.

JR C Alexis Cole is 6'11 236 and is rated 79 overall. He is also a very good shot blocker. He is averaging 3.2 ppg and 1.3 bpg in 12 mpg.

14:19 - We are up 7-4. Boxley has 5 as he has hit a 3 and a 16 foot jumper.

9:06 - Tied at 12. I bring in the 2nd unit.

4:07 - Down 26-20, I get my starters back into the game.

Halftime: Down 34-28. We are shooting horrible from the perimeter. The only thing keeping us in it is our FT shooting.

Boxley leads our team with 7. Detrick, McCurry, and Enzweiler each have 4. Mendoza with a quiet first half.

McCurry hits a quick 3 to get the crowd going in the 2nd half.

Detrick is blowing by his man early. He beats his man and draws a 3rd foul on Hanson.

18:14 - Esterkamp with a great drive past Mendoza gets a 3rd foul on Boxley. We are down 40-38.

McCurry with another 3. This one gives us the lead.

McCurry with a drive draws a 3rd foul on Weaver.

11:08 - Tied at 55. Moye and McCurry have been our offense the last few minutes. Moye is exhausted now and needs a break.

10:01 - McCurry gets a 3rd foul on Kole.

7:59 - McCurry is very tired and will get a few minutes on the bench. We are tied at 59.

6:01 - A debacle of offensive rebounding allows them to get a point off a FT and then a 3 after a missed 3 attempt. We are down 66-62 and during the foul, Boxley fouled out of the game.

After we miss a shot by Blizzard, he makes a steal and sets up a fastbreak by Didlake who dunks it.

Blizzard with another steal, finds Humphrey in the corner, but he misses this 3 (he made one a few minutes ago.)

Moye with a block, sets up the fast break, Didlake to Humphrey who gets called for a charge on a dunk attempt!

After Hanson makes 1 of 2 FT's, Blizzard with an old fashioned 3 point play to tie it at 67.

Didlake gets into the lane and gets a 4th foul on Weaver. He makes 1 of 2 and I decide to get Detrick in ASAP.

3:56 - Humphrey with a nice drive gets a 5th foul on Konare. He hits both FT's to put us up 70-69.

Esterkamp with a 3 to give them the lead again. With 3:20 to go, I get McCurry and Mendoza back into the game.

With 2:08 to go, Mendoza with a nice post up move. We are down 74-72.

Mendoza with solid defense, Esterkamp shoots over him.. and misses. Enzweiler with the rebound.

McCurry beats his man off the dribble and draws a 4th foul on Cole. He makes both FT's to tie it at 74. 1:22 to go.

Mendoza tips a ball, everyone on our team scrambles for it, Esterkamp gets it and finds a wide open Ward for the basket. 76-74.

Detrick beats his man using a screen, drives into the lane, and is fouled. He makes both FT's. Tied at 76 with 58 seconds to go.

We set up one of our favorite plays, it gets McCurry the open 3 in the corner.. he shoots.. it rims out. They get the board.

They run the clock down.. Esterkamp shoots with 2 seconds left.. and misses the 16 footer. Mendoza with good defense. We are going to OT.

Detrick with a corner 3 on a great pass from Mendoza.

Mendoza steals a pass meant for Esterkamp and throws it ahead to Detrick who finishes the fastbreak with a layup.

Both sides miss baskets before Hanson scores. 81-78, we lead.

Mendoza misses a tough contested 14 footer. Esterkamp hits a 3 over him. 3 minutes left.

McCurry with another drive into the lane and he is fouled again. He may be my best player ever at generating contact. He makes both FT's.

BS Goaltending call on Moye. Tied at 83. 2 minutes to go.

Detrick finds Mendoza for an easy basket in the lane. Detrick with a steal, he passes it to Mendoza who has it stolen by Esterkamp. Ward with a 3 at the other end. Down 86-85.

Detrick runs the pick and roll with Moye.. Detrick hits the 16 footer.

Hammond with a 12 footer to give them the lead back. McCurry fakes out Hammond and gets into the lane where he is fouled. He makes both FT's. 89-88, we lead with 30 seconds left.

With 5 seconds left Esterkamp shoots over Mendoza.. and misses! Moye with the board! They foul Moye. He makes the 1st.. and the 2nd! 91-88.

Moye blocks the 3 at the top of the key to end the game!

We win the game 91-88. So much for a quick relaxing game before bed.

McCurry is the player of the game. He finished with 21 points, 5 boards, 3 assists, and 1 turnover. He shot 2 of 10, 2 of 8, and 15 of 16.

Detrick with 20 points, 5 assists, 2 boards, and 2 steals. He had 4 turnovers. He shot 4 of 4, 1 of 1, and 11 of 12.

Mendoza with 9 points, 3 boards, 1 assist, 3 steals, and 1 block. He shot 3 of 12, 0 of 4, and 3 of 3.

Boxley with 9 points, 3 boards, and 1 block.

Moye with 12 points, 8 boards, and a career high 6 blocks! He shot 4 of 8, 0 of 0, and 4 of 4.

Blizzard, Didlake, and Humphrey each had 5 points. Didlake with 1 assist in his 1st game back.

Today, we host the Bruins. They are 11-5. We better beat them..

We beat them 78-74.

Detrick with 9 points, 6 boards, 3 assists, and 4 turnovers.

McCurry with 12 points, 3 assists, and 1 block.

Mendoza with 1 point, 2 boards, and 3 assists. He shot 0 of 8.

Boxley with 13 points, 6 boards, and 2 blocks.

Moye with 9 points, 3 boards, and 1 steal.

Blizzard with 12 points and 5 boards off the bench.

Didlake with 11 points and 4 assists off the bench.

After the game, I find myself contemplating benching Detrick until I read the staff's report and they believe Detrick is showing the most explosive growth of anyone on the team again this year. They believe he has a chance next year to be the best shooter in the Pac-10 and one of the elite in the nation.

We are now 14-2 and we have cracked the polls. We are 18th in the media poll and 23rd in the coaches poll.

I broke out my computer and looked at an interesting feature - the top record holders for games in whcih I've coached. Some of the more interesting ones:

Sockwell had the most blocks in any one game at 7.

Hannan had the most points for me in a game, 43. He also had the highest scoring average in a season for me at 20.3. Most of my season record holders are by my Niagara players. That was a high flying offense.

Hannan has the most career points of any player I coachesd. He finished with 2684 points. He also made the most 3 pointers for me in a career, 263.

Hopefully, this squad can get some of their names up there before their careers are over

Our next game will be very difficult as we host Washington. They are 12-5 and 24th in the polls, but their talent level is insane.

One reason they have lost a few games and we have a chance is that their star starting PF, who is their 2nd best player with a rating of 89, is out with a strained achilles. However, their starting 5 is full of talent:

SR PG Omar Davidson is the best player in the Pac-10. He is 6'2 188 and is rated 90 overall. His only relative weakness is his 3 point shooting. He is averaging 14.2 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 5.4 apg, and 1.2 spg.

JR SG Pete Rios is 6'6 218 and is a silky smooth shooter with elite speed and quickness. He is averaging 14 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 1.9 apg, and 1.4 spg. He is rated 87 overall.

SR SF Devonne Barber is 6'8 234 and is rated 87 overall. He has elite speed as well and should give either of my SF's a great deal of difficulty. He is a superior defender and just an average offensive player. He is averaging 7.6 ppg, 6 rpg, 1.6 apg, 1 spg, and 1.1 bpg.

With the injury to Adams, their one weakness is at PF. They start SO PF Delbert Jahnke. He is 6'8 261 and is rated 81 overall. He is a rugged post player. He is averaging 6 ppg and 5 rpg.

SR C Zack Kole completes their incredible lineup. He is 7'2 285 and is rated 87 overall. He is slow, but that is the only true weakness to his game. Tremendous size makes up for his average post repertoire. He is a tremendous post defender. He is averaging 13 ppg, 7 rpg, and 2.2 bpg.

The bench is led by 3 guys who would start on most teams:

SR PG Alberto Ortega is 6'3 192 and is rated 83 overall. He is an excellent defender.

SO SG Damir Boxley is 6'3 221 and is rated 83 overall. He is one of the best 3 point shooters in the conference. If he continues to stay and improve, he will be extremely frightening in a year or two. As it is, he is averaging 10 ppg in only 16 mpg.

SO Mick Bradshaw is 6'8 238 and is rated 80 overall. He is a great energy/hustle guy.

14:54 - Mendoza with a steal, throws a great outlet to Detrick who dunks it and is fouled by Omar! That is Omar's 2nd and he leaves the game. Our chances to win just improved by a huge margin. We are up 11-7.

CRAP! Detrick hurt his ankle on the play. Our chances to win just went way down. Detrick had already hit a huge 3 to get us going. If he can't come back, Didlake is going to need to pick up a lot of minutes this game..

McCurry spins off his man, and draws a 2nd foul on Jahnke.

30 seconds later, Rios explodes by McCurry who just gets called for a reach-in as he tries to save the dunk. That is McCurry's 2nd. He'll get a breather with 13 minutes to go.

Humphrey hits a 3 right after coming into the game. At the other end, Humphrey with a block.

9:50 - We are up 19-13. Detrick has been cleared to return, but I'm going to go with Didlake as long as he doesn't need a break.

8:02 - Our shots are falling right now and theirs aren't. We are up 26-14.

4:45 - While Humphrey's offense has been very nice, Rios is lighting him up and he seems to have no chance to keep up with him. Time to get McCurry back into the game. We are up 33-31.

Blizzard is on a roll, but I want to get Mendoza back in. Mendoza will come in at PF.

Halftime: We are up 38-36.

Rios went off in the 1st half, once he got going against Humphrey. Rios with 18 points at the half.

Blizzard leads our team with 10 points. He is playing his best all around game. He'll start the 2nd half with Mendoza taking a seat on the bench for a bit. Didlake will start the 2nd half as he is definitely better than a hobbled Detrick.

15:02 - Rios is filthy. He's taking over the game in all phases, however, Blizzard is keeping us in it with timely 3's. We are down 49-44. Blizzard, Didlake, and Moye all need a break.

14:01 - Kole is hammering us down low. Boxley just picked up his 3rd foul.

13:12 - Boxley picks up his 4th foul, but I'm leaving him in. Moye and Blizzard still both need more time to rest.

11:46 - Omar has the last 5 points for them. Detrick just managed to get a 3rd foul on Omar. We are down 56-47.

Seconds later, Detrick buries a 3!

Rios responds with a 3 off a great screen. He has 25.

McCurry gets 2 fouls in a row on Rios. He now has 3 and will leave for a bit.

7:12 - Detrick with a pair of 3's to pull within 4, before their backup SF hits a 3. Down 64-57.

6:05 - Detrick is tired, McCurry is exhausted, Mendoza is very tired, and Boxley is exhausted. I go to my 2nd unit. Blizzard needs to pick up where he left off..

5:15 - Rios came back into the game and misses his first 3. However, he hits his next shot. We are down 68-62. I've got Blizzard on him with Humphrey guarding their SF, Barber.

4:33 - Didlake with a drive into the lane drawing the foul but he misses both FT's.

2:43 - Blizzard with a steal, passes to Didlake, who throws an alley-oop for Humphrey! Our crowd is going wild! Down 70-67.

Omar with a bad pass, we get the ball back!

Didlake in the lane, passes out to Humphrey for an open 3.. and he .. misses it. At the other end, Blizzard draws a charge on Rios! That is his 4th.

1:19: Humphrey misses another open 3. Very disappointing. They get a fastbreak going that Kole finishes with a huge dunk. 72-67.

I call a timeout and get Detrick, McCurry and Mendoza back in.

Mendoza misses an open 3.. Moye with the offensive board, he kicks it out to Detrick who finds Blizzard in the corner. He drills the 3! 42 seconds left.

With 14 seconds left, Rios off a screen nails the 16 footer. Sigh.

Detrick takes a quick 3 and misses it.

We lose the game 76-70. Good game against a great team, but a loss is always disappointing.

Rios is the player of the game with 32 points, 3 boards, 1 assist, 2 steals, and 2 blocks. He shot 8 of 12, 4 of 6, and 12 of 15.

Davidson with 6 points, 6 assists, and 4 turnovers. He shot 2 of 3.

Barber with 9 points, 3 boards, and 3 blocks. He shot 4 of 10.

Jahnke with 6 points and 7 boards.

Kole with 12 points, 18 boards, 4 assists, and 4 blocks. He shot 4 of 7 and 4 of 4 from the line.

Blizzard led our team with 20 points and 1 board. He shot 6 of 7, 4 of 4, and 4 of 4. I should have gotten him more shots, but he was just shooting when it was in the flow of the game.

Detrick with 12 points and 3 assists. He shot 4 of 8 in 15 minutes.

McCurry with 12 points, 3 boards, and 1 assist.

Mendoza with 4 points, 2 boards, and 2 assists. He shot 1 of 9. Time to face that he might not be starting material...

Boxley with 7 points, 5 boards, 5 assists, and a block.

Moye with 1 point, 11 boards, and 1 block. Not bad considering the competition.

Humphrey had 11 points on 4 of 10 shooting.

Didlake with 3 points and 1 assist in 25 minutes.

Enzweiler with 0 points, 7 boards, and a block. He played 23 minutes.

After the game, our staff and I talk about who has showed the most growth this year. Detrick is still showing off the chart explosive growth. I guess our staff is right about his "A" potential.

Blizzard is the player showing the next most growth and all of my staff believes he should be starting. I decide to listen to them and bench Mendoza.

Humphrey is showing the next highest level of growth. He could be a great scorer off the bench in the future.

If no one leaves early, my team could be really special next year.

Jan 24, 2028 -

Our next game is at Arizona and is definitely winnable. They are 10-9 as their young players continue to struggle.

6:48 - We are up 25-17. Time to get Detrick and Moye back into the game. I rest Blizzard, McCurry, and Boxley.

13 seconds - Holden hits a 3 to make it 63-62. Gulp.

I had never seen a guy gain 5 in overall rating in 1 year. Detrick has now done it. Furthermore, our staff swears his 3 point shooting is getting better very quickly. I really wish I could have gotten him as a freshman. Oh well, he is setting himself up for a monster senior year next year.

Our next game is hosting 8-13 Washington State. We better beat them.

We smoke them 100-73. Detrick with 20 points, 4 boards, 3 assists, and a steal. He shot 5 of 9, 4 of 6, and 6 of 6.

13:42 - This game is going much worse than the game in Eugene did. We can't get any calls. Stapley and Lindeman are killing us on the outside. Our shots aren't falling. We are down 19-5. I bring in Mendoza to try to give us a spark.

Our next game is at Cal. They are 16-7. We beat them 91-88 at home earlier in the year.

19:04 - Detrick has picked up 2 early fouls on Ward, their PG. They are up 2-0.

18:00 - The refs are calling this game VERY tight. Both teams already with 4 team fouls.

16:12 - Boxley picks up his 2nd foul. Enzweiler comes into the game.

13:35 - We are down 12-8. Blizzard just drew a 2nd foul on his defender but he is tired. I bring in Mendoza.

9:21 - Sloppy ball handling, turnovers, and fast break baskets abound for both sides. We are down 20-19. I go with this lineup now: Didlake, Humphrey, Blizzard, Mendoza, and Enzweiler.

5:25 - We are down 32-28 and Enzweiler is very tired. Moye returns to the game.

2:05 - Every one of my starters has 2 fouls. We are down 42-36.

Halftime: We are down 46-39. They are 20 of 25 from the FT line which is the difference in the game.

Hammond leads their team with 12 points, 3 boards, and 3 assists.

11:19 - We are collapsing inside and Hammond is nailing 3's. We are down 71-57 and Detrick just picked up his 4th.

With 8 minutes to go, Moye fouls out. It has become a full blown rout. We are down 80-59.

We are now 19-4 and 14th in the media poll. Today, we have our toughest game of the year as we travel to play Washington. They are 18-6 but are 5th in the media poll as everyone knows they are now healthy and one of the most talented teams in the nation. Their roster strength is now up to 96. Ours is up to 91.

We pull off the huge upset! 89-78. Rios, Kole, and Adams each got theirs as they had 21, 19, and 20 points respectively, but Detrick held Omar to 5 points and our guys held Barber to 0 points!

Every starter scored big for us.

Detrick with 10 points, 5 assists, 3 steals, and 1 turnover. He shot 3 of 7.

McCurry with 12 points, 5 boards, and 5 assists. He shot 4 of 9.

Didlake and Humphrey each had 5 points off the bench.

Great win for us. That boosts us to 12th in the media poll.

Our next game is hosting an Arizona team that is struggling. They are 15-12 and have been hit by a few injuries. If can contain their star Center Roger Clifford, it should be an easy win.

3:07 - We put Moye back into the game. We are up 60-59 after Blizzard dunked it on a fastbreak.

Robbins, their SG, hits a 3 and a 12 foot jumper for them. They are now up 65-61 with 2 minutes to go.

Detrick drives into the lane and draws a foul. He makes both FT's.

They miss a 3, but Clifford with a huge offensive putback dunk! I think he went over Boxley's back on that one, but it wasn't called.

Detrick misses a 3, but he gets a steal at the other end that starts our fastbreak. Blizzard to McCurry for the dunk. Down 67-65 with 47 seconds left.

Clifford with a nice move in the post gets an easy dunk. 69-65. Those were his first 4 points of the game.

McCurry misses a 3 and it looks like we are going to have a very disappointing loss as they hit 1 of 2 FT's.

We are now 21-5 and 11th in the media poll as we enter the final week of the regular season. Our last 2 games are very winnable - at Arizona State (16-12) and at Oregon State (9-17.)

13:51 - They are on a 6-0 run. We are down 11-8. Moye gets a short break.

11:32 - The run continues. I put in my 2nd unit. Down 15-8.

9:03 - The run continues I get Moye back in the game. Down 21-8.

7:45 - Mendoza with a steal, passes it to Didlake. Didlake with a breakaway dunk. 21-10.

Didlake is responsible for our next 6 points with another basket and 2 assists.

Humphrey with a pair of 3's. Down 30-22 with 4 minutes left.

We close within 6 before they go on another 10 run to end the half.

Halftime: Down 42-26 and I'm starting to think our lack of consistency is going to knock us out of the tourney very early.

Minter, their massive center, is the player of the half with 10 points, 10 boards, and 2 blocks.

Detrick, Blizzard, and Didlake each have 4 points. Humphrey with 10 points leads our team.

17:30 - Detrick with a pair of 3's to get us fired up, but Moye just picked up his 4th foul. Enzweiler comes in for him.

11:12 - Down 59-49. Blizzard is on fire now with back to back 3's. Didlake and Humphrey into the game.

7:02 - Blizzard picks up his 4th foul. He is exhausted. I bring in Mendoza. He has to give us a spark this game. Down 65-59.

4:00 - Down 73-66. Mendoza has 7 points, but the rest of the team isn't responding. I get some starters back into the game.

1:46 - McCurry with a big 3 to keep us in it. Down 79-73. We just can't seem to stop Minter from scoring. He has their last 8 points and I'm going to double him in the paint.

1:21 - McCurry with another quick 3 after Minter missed a shot! Down 79-76.

42 seconds left: Minter misses another shot. Mendoza is fouled at the other end. He makes both FT's. Down 79-78.

25 seconds left: We double Minter, but he splits it. Moye fouls him to prevent a dunk. Moye fouls out. Mi9nter makes both FT's.

8 seconds left: Detrick gets a good look at a 3.. and misses. They get the board. He tried to get it to McCurry, but they were covering him tight.

McCurry misses a quick 3 and that is the ball game.

We lose 82-78.

Minter was the player of the game with 27 points and 15 boards.

Blizzard led our team with 21 points, 3 boards, 2 assists, and 1 steal. He shot 6 of 10.

Detrick with 12 points, 9 assists, and 2 turnovers. He shot 3 of 10.

McCurry with 7 points, 3 boards, and 1 assist. He shot 2 of 8.

Boxley with 4 points and 7 boards.

Moye with 4 points and 9 boards.

Mendoza and Humphrey each had 12 points to lead the bench.

Part of why I sim 1 then play 1 is for stats to be more equalized with the sim engine. The other reason is for injuries to be more fair as I rarely if ever get serious injuries during my games. Well, in the last game of the year, we beat Oregon State but it was very costly as Blizzard broke his hand and will likely miss the entire post-season. Also, Novakovic broke his leg in the game and is definitely out for post-season.

We won the game 80-62. I need to get Mendoza's confidence back because he just became our starting SF again.

Moye with 18 points, 9 boards, and 3 blocks led the team.

Detrick with 13 points and 7 assists.

McCurry with 11 points and 4 assists.

Mendoza led the bench with 13 points and 6 boards.
