Not only have these games been close, it seems to me the quality of play is much better than in recent years. I think part of that is the new NBA rule.

Oden has also played most of the year with his off hand. Oden will be the better NBA player. There's a guy with Durant's skill set in every draft, guys with Oden's size and skills are rare. |

Why try a 3-pointer there? That makes no sense.

Rebounds and ball control, something USC couldn't do in the second half last week. Looks like GT might take this.

Daivd himself couldn't have programmed a collapse at the end such as UNC's.

Crap, I didn't want any part of Georgetown on Saturday after the beating they gave OSU last year. Once Georgetown went to the match up zone, UNC got nothing down the stretch.

So, I guess UCLA and Georgetown are both our final 4 underdogs! Good to see some small schools stick it to the big boys!

Good lord, did you actually watch the game? Memphis was 0-14 on 3-pointers, and missed like 15 layups that game. Memphis was getting good looks last year, they didn't fall. This year, they were just plain outmatched. |

Oden has a combination of strength and speed that is pretty unique amongst bigs, and it's those two traits that usually seperate the good bigs from the mediocre. I'm sure it'll take a season or two, but I fully expect Oden to be a very solid NBA player. As for Durant, no doubt he'll be a very good player, but I consider it less likely that he'll wind up being the kind of guy you can build a team around. He's less of a risk to be sure, but who would you prefer on your team; Tim Duncan or Mello? There's no garauntee that either player will reach the heights of those two players, but there's a fair chance that both will come close, and I'd take Duncan anyday of the week.

I'm no NBA guru by any means, in fact I can't stand the NBA. That being said, you might be right, but I'd take Durant on my college team before Oden anyday of the week. I do think Durant will make a bigger impact than Oden right off the bat in the NBA though. If Oden stays another year, that would only help him, imo. |

Just got back from UNC-Gtown, still don't really know how we won that game. It seemed like the Tarheels had an answer every time we made a run, but we stuck around, and found a way to tie it up at the end. The overtime was just a deflated UNC team that started chucking bad jumpers when they got down. Incredible game as a fan though, one of those ones where you dip into a little bit of despair and then your team finds a way to make you believe again.
Great game though, and UNC is a great team. Hopefully they don't lose a bunch of guys, they're fun to watch. |

It's a tough call IMO. Skill-wise, no question that Durant tops Oden, but man, Oden's presence is hard to formulate. When he's in the game he opens it up for everybody else in a way that Durant, as good as he is, doesn't. Having said that, if I'm a college coach I'd still take Durant, but I think it's much closer than their stats dictate.

You have to give their D some credit. I've only seen them play once this season - their Sweet 16 win over Pitt - but, assuming that game was business as usual for them, they pressure teams all game and throw them out of their offensive rhythm. They have strong defenders at guard and on the wings, and don't give up very much in the half-court set, though they struggled a little with their transition D. They also did a pretty tremendous job on Gray in the post, doubling him immediately after about 10 mins in and forcing him in to some bad passes. As long as they can also put points on the board, which seems to be the problem for this Bruins team when Afflalo isn't knocking them down, then UCLA don't need much luck. Still, I think Florida will have too much firepower for UCLA. The dual-post threats for the Gators will be too tough to lock down on, and will probably lead to that bloody Lee Humphrey getting way too many good looks. If they do make it through however, I'll be putting my money on UCLA over either Ohio State or Georgetown.

Re: UNC meltdown...
I'm not sure I've ever seen anything like that. Seemed like they scored about 4 points in the last 10 minutes of regulation, and gave up, what, 14 straight in the first 4+ minutes of OT? Credit to the Hoya D, certainly, but it looked to me like the Heels turned JV alluvasudden. Drives were stolen, jumpers were short, the defense was sloppy, wow. I think maybe they packed their bags for Atlanta after playing 30 minutes, and got flat out embarassed.

UNC was average in a half court set most of the season. Georgetown was able to stop them from running and played great D and UNC didn't have an answer. Its hard to be upset about an elite 8 appearance, but the run *really* shouldn't have ended there. Kudos to Georgetown.

Only one team was higher than a 4 seed in the NCAA tournament in the conference. Going into the season the ACC was supposed to be UNC, Duke, and everyone else. It turned into UNC and everyone else, except UNC had virtually no upperclass leadership and was prone to upsets so really didn't pull away like they could have given their talent level. They struggled a ton in games where they had to play half court offense, and struggled even more in close games. Given that in its best years the ACC has 3 teams competing for 1 seeds, and most years there are 3 teams seeded 3 or better, I thikn its fair to say the ACC as a whole has been completely underwhelming the entire season. |

On the rumor mill: Heath out at Arkansas and Gillespie will be hired this week. Not sure the validity on it, but the Hog and Aggie boards are buzzing.

The ACC sold its basketball soul in order to make a football motivated expansion. It is reaping what it sowed.

What hasn't seemed to matter? In no way are you talking about this season are you? That Mizzou roster sucks and Anderson did much better than I expected him to. Weber on the other hand came into a great team and yes they made the dance this year, but who does he have coming in to bring this team back to greatness? I like Weber, but for some reason he's not getting the recruits. Last edited by MizzouRah : 03-26-2007 at 08:55 AM. |

Um, they won 20 games this year in less-than-desirable circumstances. Agreed, not '04-esque in any manner, but it's hard to argue against Weber's track record, IMO. 'Course, I'm in the minority and most every other Illini fan wants his head, so who knows.

dola btw, this is patently untrue everyone is piling on because of the Gordon fiasco, but Bruce actually has a fairly good class coming in. I think expectations of top 5 classes every season following the title game run were unreasonable...
