TSN is reporting that Canucks defenseman Luc Bourdon was killed in a motorcycle accident in New Brunswick this morning. He was 21. What a terrible tragedy.

Everything Old, New Again

PITTSBURGH-One of the worst kept secrets in hockey is expected to become public in the next few days as Barry Melrose returns from TV exile to take over the coaching reins of the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Melrose, who last coached in the NHL with the Los Angeles Kings 13 years ago, is expected to get the Tampa job, replacing John Tortorella, who has yet to be replaced or reassigned.

It's believed new Tampa owner Oren Koules is the driving force behind the hiring of Melrose, who led the Los Angeles Kings to the the 1993 Stanley Cup final against Montreal. In recent years, the Kelvington, Sask. native has been a featured analyst on ESPN.

Koules, once partnered with former Columbus president Doug MacLean to buy the Lightning before that collaboration broke up, is looking for a marquee name to help sell and market the club in central Florida. Tampa, which won the 2004 Stanley Cup, missed the playoffs this year.

Melrose's hiring will surprise many NHL watchers, as will his salary, expected to be about $2 million per season. Melrose was a defenceman in the Maple Leafs organization from 1980-83, and coached the Medicine Hat Tigers to the 1988 Memorial Cup.

The Lightning traded away Brad Richards late last season, but still have stars Vinny Lecavalier, Martin St. Louis and Dan Boyle under contract. The Bolts own the No. 1 pick in next month's NHL entry draft and are expected to select Sarnia junior forward Steven Stamkos.

Melrose's last two seasons with L.A. saw the club finish out of post-season play. Since ESPN lost rights to broadcast NHL games, Melrose has been an analyst on ESPN and a frequent contributor to ESPN.com.

XXXXXXXXXX

A number of media commentators are raising a fuss over the reluctance of Pittsburgh Penguins owner Mario Lemieux to comment publicly on his team's performance in this year's playoffs.

Some have claimed Lemieux hasn't spoken publicly since March, 2007, but he actually gave an interview to The Star on April 16 after the Penguins eliminated the Ottawa Senators. Since then, Lemieux has declined to be interviewed, citing his belief that the focus should be on his team and star centre Sidney Crosby.

So NOW can we re-vote the NHL draft and give my selection of Barry Melrose as coach some justice???

What a game that was. Osgood put together one of the finer performances I've seen in net in the NHL. Red Wings win after a rare defensive letdown by the Pens in their own zone to open the 3rd.

Good game. For some reason, I just can't get into the NBC/Versus broadcasts. Hopefully the NHL gets a better television contract. I wonder if they make any money off the NBC deal. I don't know what the production costs for a game is (I wonder how it compares to a NFL or ABC college football production), but the advertising has to be low.

I agree, although I have to admit that I really like Mike Emrick.

Big thumbs up to the Wings. The Pens had every chance to control that game-- coming off Weds win, scoring first-- but couldn't bury the Wings.

Then the 5-3, and they couldn't capitalize (don't even ask about the 4th PP when they couldn't even get setup!). Sad part of the 5-3, the call against Lilja was the weakest of all the interference calls that could have been made, all series, against either team.

Anyway, trying to find a silver lining here...maybe Malkin is costing himself some money. Lots of guys have good regular seasons. And he was great the 1st 10 games of the playoffs. But average through the balance of the Flyers series, and a no show in the SCF. I have to think there is some sort of injury involved, but I guess we'll find out within the week.

Also, Pascal (Pasquale if you're Edzo) Dupuis is costing himself too. No one is expecting him to be a 30+ goal guy, but he's probably had the best chances of any forward, both teams, in the SCF. I can think of at least 5 point blank chances he hasn't coverted.

Yeah, I really thought the Wings would be in trouble after that first goal. Great hands by Hossa there. The Wings battled back very well. Osgood was stellar on a number of saves.

Also, unless your Sidney Crosby, you can't say enough about Zetterberg's work on that 5-on-3. It was astoundingly good. If the Wings win the Cup, that could be the sequence that cements him for the Con Smythe.

I agree, but Crosby sold it very well. A superb dive on that play.

Hopefully the Wings can take care of business on Monday. That'd be nice.

I've been on the Pens (and their fan's) case before about complaining about interference, but last night the Wings got away with quite a few interference calls where they would lay out a Pen player no where near the puck.

One thing I've learned from this series: Crosby is a little rat turd. He's very good, but he's a little turd. Watching him play, and reading his press clips just makes me want to pimp slap him.

Wow, really? I am saying this as a Pens fan, he's done much MUCH worse than that. I really think he was just attempting to jump around Lilja, and Lilja caught enough of him for the call to be made. I don't even think that should have been called.

Crosby uses that move (jump-stop? I don't know what you want to call it) pretty often to go around the defender skating past him.

Based on? Because he isn't saying "we have no chance, just give the damn trophy to Detroit right now" ? I don't know what he's said that has been that bad--unless it's that he doesn't say anything flashy and all his answers are by the book.

Pens have recalled Alex Goligoski from their AHL club. Most likely, Kris Letang will not be in Detroit, he's attending Luc Bourdon's funeral.

Most likely he doesn't play, and WBS doesn't play game 3 of the Calder finals until Weds.

Sami Kapanen has retired from the NHL. He is a guy I have the utmost respect for. Back in 2004 he willingly played defense for the Flyers when they were decimated by injuries. He is a total team player and a great guy all around.

That being said, I hope they put his $1.25 million they save to good use and sign Umberger.

I think it is more where Pittsburgh turned it off after the 1st. They seemed to be more concerned with protecting their 2 goal lead than winning the game. They are not the same team that we saw in the 1st period.

that was 19 minutes and 30 seconds of some of the most dominant hockey ive seen in a looong time from any team. detroit looked like they were playing a different sport than pitt.

props to pitt for not giving up, but this sure looks like inevitability.

I'm not a big hockey fan, but for my money a last-second game-tying goal in hockey is as exciting as it gets in sports. Better than a game-winning goal because of the empty net strategy and the fact that the team is fighting for their life. Add in the fact that it's not only the playoffs but the Stanley Cup Finals and that was good stuff.
