Well, look at it this way:
Czechs win - 6 points, 1 less spot in the next round.
Czechs lose - Ghana, Czech, Italy on 3 points. If we beat Italy, everything is almost even (depends on how much we beat Italy by to determine the goal difference). A tie v. Ghana and a strong win v. Italy (and an Italian Czech tie) could move us along
Czechs tie - We'd still have to at least tie Italy and hopefully beat Ghana by a lot and hope that the Czechs and Italians don't play to a tie.

The commentator just announced that the Ghanian forward plays for Serie B in Italy *sobs*.

Overly obvious statement:

Brent Musberger is a complete and utter shitbag of a commentator.

Please return to your earlier enjoyment.

Thank You.

DOLA: that being said I am VERY impressed with Ghana's play thus far. If their defense can stay solid they might stick a second one in and shock everyone with a win here.

Off the post PK for Ghana. Wow, that could have nailed the coffin.

Red card for Czechs... Wow, this team is imploding today.

Yeah I've been very underwhelmed by this ref, he's terribly inconsistant.

Terrible refereeing and the Ghana players following him around waving their hands and demanding a red card was classless.

The Czech are going to be without two starters due to cards and probably without Koller when they play Italy.

Actually, now that I think bout it - the red card wasn't the ref's discretion. If you think there is a foul by the last man (ie, the last obstacle between the player and the goalkeeper ), its an automatic red-card if it is a "goal-scoring" opportunity - which it clearly was. The foul call was shit - but the red card wasn't really a choice.

This is weird, I'm rooting for no more goals, but sort of rooting for Ghana to score because 2-0 is better than 1-1. Weird feeling.

The Czech goalie has saved this from being a blowout.

Eh, Ghana's dropping back 9 men at this point - I don't see the Czech's scoring without a little magic.

That last goal looked like all the players were in slow motion.

This is interesting. Assuming a US loss to Italy, the Czech's will have to go gung ho against a tight Italian defense because they are tied with Ghana in points - while Ghana gets the Americans.

The red card changed things though - the Czech's were forced to push people forward, down one man - and they got caught out. they haven't played well, but that was a huge factor .

If Ghana had any idea how to make a run they'd be up Argentina style.

Can these announcers stop talking about the US and goal differential. There is no way that the US is going to advance on G.D. They need a win over Italy.

I think they're taking a win into account. Of course it doesn't matter if they lose.

Are the Czechs going to be without all their strikers against Italy?

If the US can pull out a tie even, that would put them in a strong position.

I can live with that, but I'd prefer an all out attack. Drop Mastroeni for Johnson. A 1-0 win would be nice, but it doesn't really do a lot for us if it happens.

They keep reiterating the fact that no matter what happens today vs. Italy, the US will not be eliminated. Let's not sugar coat it. If we lose, we are done.

Italy with 9 pts, and USA/Ghana/Czech with 3, is a very possible outcome.

We would have to beat Ghana like 6-0 or something around there to advance.

I wonder if perhaps Johnson isn't 90 mins fit? Maybe Arena is thinking of bringing him in at the half?

Then obviously they're telling the truth. We can lose and still beat Ghana and hope to advance on goal difference. Wouldn't be the first time that's ever happened.

If you think we can beat Ghana 6-0, then more power to ya.

Only Argentina has scored that amount so far and I don't think we are Argentina.

Yeah, I think the announcers keep forgetting this when they say we need a win vs. Italy. I'd happily take a tie (obviously I'd prefer a win but...).

I'd say it's fair based on the card situation that Italy will beat the Czechs. Then if we beat Ghana, we'd be sitting on 4 points with Czechs and Ghana on 3 ... unless I'm missing something.

Rumor I heard was that South Africa won't be ready and Brazil is the backup plan.

Officially South Africa is more prepared than Germany was 4 years ago, so probably just a rumor. FIFA won't withdraw from South Africa unless they absolutely have to, that would be admitting they made a mistake and FIFA don't do that.
