I must have pissed off the driving gods this morning. Get off the freeway for my exit to get to work and there is this huge line of traffic. Very unusual for that time of day. I finally get up about a half a mile and it appears that a Prius was killed while running a red light. So the cops have traffic diverted and it's bumper to bumper every which way. I'm about 3 cars back from the intersection and having to do a slight detour on the cross street.
I take the cross street and I go down a little bit and then do a u-turn. Takes maybe a minute. As I approach the intersection (where I now have to make a right instead of just going straight through like normal), the cops had reopened the intersection. DOH!!! If I had just waited one minute, I would have never of had to do the cross street and u-turn maneuver.

I avoid the "heel" part of a loaf of bread. And, I don't know why - it doesn't taste any different.

Texture, many don't like the crust, and it's got a lot more of it than any other piece. I love the heel on a good fresh-baked loaf. Off-the-shelf half-stale heavily-preserved loaves aren't nearly as good.

So there was a band in the late 90's/early 2000's...I can't remember the band but I can see the CD cover kinda in my head. It's a black cover with salmon or orange colored stars on it. It was alternative rock type music I think. Help me remember, please?
On a different note, I came to the realization yesterday that I am hurting myself when I shower. Have I mentioned back surgery sucks? /tk

Shouldn't even laptops be rather easy to get at least 6GB in them? 4GB was the standard when I got out of retail about 18 months so I haven't checked lately. W8 is suppose to be light, but I would still go above 4GB.

Should be plenty. If you're building a system you might want to go with more, but you shouldn't need to upgrade if you have 4. There's not a whole lot of need more than 4GB right now if doing design type work. For most desktop usage you probably won't see much if any a difference if you go with more. Gaming might see a benefit, but most games aren't going to use that much anyway. Last edited by mckerney : 11-18-2012 at 06:47 PM. |

I was thinking about the sheer number of election signs I am still driving by on the way to work this morning and how to deal with the problem. There's the "fine the campaign $X for signs left out" but I would think an opposing campaign would throw some signs out where no one would see them just to make the other guy pay. Heck, we already have a lot of funny business with campaign lawn signs. The best that I could come up with is that there needs to be a 5c deposit on signs like you see with coke cans in Iowa or other states. The campaign has to pay an extra nickel per sign, which makes them think twice about wasting signs, while there's an incentive to turn them back in. You couldn't redeem until after the election so no grabbing them early. But I'm sure some people would ignore that and just stash some signs. Still they're kindof large so it's not like you're going to clean out a huge space in your garage for signs when a trash can full of them is only worth like $2. SI

How about we just get rid of lawn signs altogether? Has anybody's vote or opinion ever been changed by the presence of a sign in their neighbor's lawn, in the history of recorded time? As far as I can tell, their REAL, modern purpose is just an exercise in ego for that particular homeowner, who gets to tell everybody who/what their voting for. I don't get 'em. They seem like relics from the pre-TV days of presidential pins, and barkers in straw hats when that kind of broad, generic promotion was necessary just to introduce your issue/name to the voting public, but whereas you never see anybody driving around in a representative's panel van with loudspeakers mounted on top anymore, you still get lawns packed full of signs every time election days roll around.

It's not signs on a neighbor's lawn, it's the ones in the medians and along the signs of roads that drive me nuts. At least a homeowner is responsible for the sign, while the others are just planted by folks who put them in then forget about them.

Wasn't there a book or at least a substantial article about how Rick Perry hired some economists who "moneyball'd" his governor races and one of the things that was out the window was the use of yard signs since it had a horrible ROI?
That said, if we're talking about Obama/Biden or Romney/Ryan signs late in the game, sure- everyone knows who they are and a yard sign will not change that one way or the other. But I think there is some herd mentality early that can be exploited: "I didn't think Newt Gingrich had a chance in the GOP primary but I saw a lot of yard signs so maybe he is electable after all". This would be in the basic vetting of getting enough support to be a viable candidate. Also, I was kindof disappointed when I looked at the election returns of some down ballot races in my county in Texas. You can see the number of straight ticket voters and it was substantial but nowhere near a majority. It was something like 30%, split 55% R and 45% D. If I were a good D running for a seat, that would give me some hope in that 70% were unspoken for and could be pretty easily convinced. However, when I looked at the actual returns, the variance in almost all of the races was 55-45. So, even the non straight ticket voters still voted for their party of choice in about 98% of cases and only about 2% of votes was really up for play, based on the variance of all of the races (judges, school board, water district, etc). Personally, I took a couple of hours the night before to research my down ballot races and pick the candidate who, in my mind, would be the best at that position as I feel the lower down on the ballot you get, the less of an impact party plays with your ability to do the job. It's not like views on abortion of the drainage commissioner for the county is going to influence his/her job in the way that a Presidential candidate's ability to appoint a Supreme Court justice can. But apparently, it really is all about the R or D next to your name right down to city dog catcher*, at least in this county. SI *no, we do not vote on that

In some of the more conservative forums I read, the polling before the election was all wrong because guys were talking about how they don't see any Obama signs in their area.

Similar to the yard signs, the signs posted just outside the polling places, and with them, the people at the door passing out pamphlets as I walk in the door.
Especially in the local races that I really have no clue who anyone is, if you hand me a piece of paper with your name on it as I'm walking in to vote, basically saying "Here moron, you probably showed up here not knowing who to vote for, so take this flyer, with my name at the top, surrounded by fireworks, and PICK ME!" (even if it is true!) I purposely don't vote for those people.

I hate going to a client with the premise I am "showing" them how to do something and it turns into a we want to add additional features meeting.
Chances are because it's programming, it is going to be taken out of their support hours and I do not have a chance to sell....

So with my busted-fingernail and freshly-trimmed nails I just discovered a new way to make the initial cut into a clementine that anyone can use to avoid having to dig in with their fingernail.
Use your teeth on the end with the "stem" to tug it out and open a nice little circular bit at the top there that you can then peel down from. Easy, and totally hassle and mess free. And if you happen to cut into the juice with your teeth, well it's easy to drink it down from there, versus having it squirt all over you.

My local paper's website went pay-only.....I never thought I'd bother with a pay news site, but, I'm already having withdrawals after like two days. It's the only place for the kind of local reporting it does, I read the blogs there, they cover the state and local governments. Shit. And $6/month seems a little high. Maybe I should suck it up and feel good about supporting local news or something.

A dude at work is trying to find out all the counties that are in Houston. I told him I'm pretty sure that cities are inside counties and not the other way around, but I've never been to Texas, so for all I know, sure, it could be different there. Wikipedia backs me up, saying that Houston is in Harris County, but he's still not convinced.
