just because there are turnovers doesn't mean it isn't exciting.

Geez- it's insane how badly we've played this half with regards to sloppiness. So many turnovers and missed shots right next to the basket.

Man, Kansas has much better talent and depth then UCLA but that was a hella fun first half to watch. I've never seen so many teams this year miss so many easy and open shots then UCLA's opponents...

I see what you're saying but... people that make unbelieveably stupid mistakes that affect thousands of people usually lose their jobs. And if I make mistakes at work my bosses don't chalk it up to "hey he's human," they start thinking about finding someone better. Officiating is definitely very difficult, and I think we all understand that an official is going to make more mistakes during a game than an equivalently skilled brain surgeon might make during an operation (there are just too many things moving at very high speeds), but that's not a bulletproof vest, if they blow something, they should be called on it. That being said, I've actually moved to the opinion that you simply don't call a travel like that in that situation. You can step and lift your pivot to vault into a shot, and with that perspective the call moves from bad to borderline in my mind after watching more replays (especially at game speed). I see the arguments both ways, and would rather the officials let the outcome of a play decide crucial situations like that rather than make a game-changing close call. But I'm an alum, totally biased, and am seriously hoping to log in tomorrow night to read Radii's enraged rantings. |

Kansas is a more talented team then UCLA is so if UCLA loses it won't be so bad but I'll be sad. Then I'll have to root against are the Ducks and the Heels. Didn't you guys remember when Memphis lost to UCLA last year? Give GE a break though, the guy didn't want to move from Memphis a few years ago because of his love for the team. |

Maybe I'll get bitched at for this, but as a Memphis fan, I saw that they played those last several minutes like they were out of it. Down by a few points with 2:00 or 3:00 or whenever Oden had 4 fouls, they stopped going at him. Douglas-Roberts takes a dumb 5th foul when his man already had him beaten to the basket. Just let him have the layup or let Dozier commit the foul. Don't reach in badly to take your 5th. It's dumb.
I know Oden is a tough defensive player, but they had him in foul trouble and didn't take advantage of it. I don't care who has to drive the lane against him. Just go at him. If he blocks a shot or two, fine, but eventually, he's going to get that last foul or stop being aggressive. Oden wasn't scoring all the points for Ohio State, but he was making it hard for the Tigers to get rebounds. It's a disgrace that Memphis didn't even try to foul him out of the game after he picked up his 4th. It's an absolute disgrace. Overall, give the Buckeyes credit for making their free throws. Conley has been lights out from the line in the tournament, and he was under 70% in the regular season. He's playing really well. As far as "fairness" with the free throws goes, I didn't see Ohio State players doing all the reaching in that the Tigers were doing. Maybe OSU was setting illegal screens (I really don't know), but the refs weren't calling fouls on screens. They were calling reaches and hacks, and OSU just wasn't doing much of that in the last several minutes of the game. The officials are under no obligation to make sure that both teams shoot a similar number of free throws. If they're going to make a particular call on one end of the floor, then yes, they should make it on the other end. If one team is just committing more fouls than the other, though, where's the beef?

I'll say one thing, Afflalo has a really nice touch.

Also, to be fair, a lot of that sloppiness we have has to do with those quick hands underneath. We keep trying to force it inside and getting it knocked away or stolen.

To encapsulate the previous comment (about UCLA) with a little more exposition- the speed and defense of the Bruins won the day. We didn't utilize our depth advantage and just played sloppy- missing easy shots and turning the ball over. Also, the complete lack of 3 point attempts is baffling as your guys did a great job of clogging up the middle to create said turnovers so we should have taken what was given. This definitely wasn't one of those "we beat ourselves" games- we could have done things differently and maybe the game would have played out differently- but you guys played great and beat us.
I dunno if you guys have enough offense to win it all as it seems like the Afflalo show with some Collison mixed in but that defense is phenomenal- it's not just one or two guys but everyone is just blazing quick, especially hands. Not only that but this is one of the strongest fields, particularly after the first weekend, in recent years- I really wanted to win it this year because whoever wins this will have beaten the best. Also, if I'm allowed to make a little niggling complaint- why again did we have to play UCLA in San Jose? I know it's a good 5 hours away from LA but I'd love to see us in St Louis or Oklahoma City or Dallas- some equivalent. I realize we got the lowest #1 but shouldn't Georgetown have been shipped out here and UCLA shipped out to Jersey to better protect the #1's? SI

You don't ship the best team from the West out of the West. You would have been better off rooting for Kansas to get a 2 seed and have it a lesser two seed as the seeding guys thought Kansas was the 4th best team and UCLA was the 5th. |

And, man, that shot at 5 minutes left was killer. I thought we had a good chance for a comeback after Robinson got us within 5 but man, the entire shot clock and then draining the three...

To add...
I think the main reason they gave Kansas the 1 seed was because they knew UCLA would have the advantage and theoretically the #1 seed has a much easier path |

(Obviously, this is a moot point and goes back to my original complaints about the bracket in the selection show thread about this being the worst job of the last 5 years or so... EDIT: It's basically something for me to talk about since Kansas is gone and until opening day next week) UCLA didn't get a #1 seed so they don't deserve to get home court against the #1. The committee has said the regional names are names only- they don't have too much of a bearing on who goes where. Just look at how Florida, the #1, got sent to the Midwest instead of South or East, closer to them. SI

You can then Nitpick that UCLA should have been the #1 seed over Kansas. But again, Kansas was deemed the weakest of the top seeds. It's not fair to award the other three teams with the "best" 2 seed |
