Odds are that he had used steroids, but odds are also that they didn't contribute to his death.

Also, "kimmy gibler" and steroids only had 572 matches, so I think the speculation around her is unfounded.

Seriously,

At least quit defaming the man until the results come out. I can't believe the douchebaggery going on in this thread. He's not even buried yet and people are accusing him of something of which they have no information.

Of everyone who has posted in this thread I am the only one who knew him personally and I would be suprised if it turned out that he had used banned substances. So until you have proof that he did shut the hell up.

If you're a pro athlete, people will assume you're on steroids, period. Not just Adams, anyone. That's the fault of the players' unions that fight meaningful drug testing, not anyone else. The unions could wipe virtually wipe out drug use and promote the safety of its members but that's never been a priority.

Definitely premature (and really, against liklihood) to drag his name through the mud, but questions can be fairly asked when it's a pro athlete, just like if it's a rock star or an actor.

And, he drops dead at the old age of 26, from health reasons that scream STEROIDS!

You'd have to be living under a rock or on another planet not to know about the growing controversy over steroids and the dangers of steroid use. Steroids virtually ended the careers and the lives of some great athletes. And yet in spite of all the warnings and the positive proof of harmful and even deadly side effects, steroid use continues at an alarming rate. Well, maybe we need just one more wake up call to the dangers of steroids. But instead of boring you with some dull facts and figures, maybe a true story will knock some sense into those who are using steroids for the purpose of getting that "edge" that so many look for when competing in sports activities.

Two years ago, one of my best friend's kids was a promising and up and coming football star. This kid was naturally big to begin with. At only 17 years of age he was over 6 feet and 220 pounds. Certainly he was big and strong enough to make it. He sure as heck had the talent. Well, it seems that his size wasn't big enough for him. So he got his hands on some anadrol, which is an anabolic steroid. He did not get it legally, which is a crime in itself. Just a first time offense can land you in jail for up to a year with a $1,000 fine. Well, this kid wasn't lucky enough to land in jail. He ended up dead from heart failure.

This was not some sick kid with a heart condition. This was a health and strong 17 year old who ended up dead from a heart attack because he took steroids. If this sounds cold and direct, I hope so.

Many years ago, back in the 70s, there was a program called "Scared Straight" This was a program that took inner city kids to maximum security prisons to see how horrible prison life was. It was an attempt to keep these kids from turning to a life of crime. Well, we need something similar with steroid use because the problem is out of control. My friend's kid is dead. There's still hope for yours.
For those who need the technical specifications of the dangers of steroids, how about just a few for starters?

Men who take steroids actually develop breasts. When they get an erection it is very painful and their testicles shrink. Their sperm count can go down to the point where they become sterile. Many also become impotent. I won't even go into the horrors that face women as it sickens me to even think about them, not the least of which is they grow beards and have their menstrual cycles totally screwed up.

But the worst part of taking steroids is that ultimately they cause an enlarged heart and heart attacks.
They run the risk of liver damage or liver cancer and many go into what is called "roid rage" where they have uncontrollable fits and can become dangerously violent. The younger you are when you take steroids, the worse it is.

I could go on, but I'm sure you've gotten a pretty grim and ugly picture of the consequences of steroid use. So if you're taking steroids, or know anybody who is, it's time to put a stop to it as soon as possible.

I know my friend wishes he had done the same for his kid.

I wonder if the struggles of being a top 5 pick, then not producing (13.5 sacks in 3 years) might lead someone to do something they ordinarily wouldn't. But until there is some sort of proof, I'd be more inclined that it was merely a genetic defect.

Here is a really good piece on athletes and enlarged hearts. They naturally have enlarged hearts because they train much more.

I think it's pretty douchy to come into a thread where a couple of guys personally knew the deceased and are clearly torn up about it and start making pretty baseless and circumstancial accusations. Let the guy RIP and let people pay their respects FFS.

Report: Toxicology tests find no additional factors in Gaines Adams' death

The State Law Enforcement Division found in toxicology tests that no additional factors contributed to the death of former Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Chicago Bears defensive end Gaines Adams, the Greenville News reports.

Adams, 26, died of cardiac arrest due to an enlarged heart on Jan. 17. The test results don't change the cause of death, Greenwood County's chief deputy coroner told the newspaper.

Dola, original article from Greenville News. It seems there will be a review but it looks like they're convinced of the results.

The State Law Enforcement Division found in toxicology tests that no additional factors contributed to the death of Chicago Bears defensive end Gaines Adams, Greenwood County’s chief deputy coroner told The Greenville News .

Adams, 26, died of a cardiac arrest due to an enlarged heart Jan. 17 at Self Regional Hospital in Greenwood, Greenwood County Coroner James T. Coursey said earlier. The test results don’t change the cause of his death, Chief Deputy Coroner Marcia Kelley-Clark told The News .

Details of the SLED report, however, haven’t been released pending a review by Dr. Brett Woodard, the Anderson pathologist who did Adams’ autopsy, Kelley-Clark said.

“His family has not been made aware of everything that is on the report,” she said.

The Greenwood native was an All-American at Clemson University, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers made him the fourth player chosen in the 2007 draft. He was traded to the Bears in October.

Greenwood County Sheriff Tony Davis said his office doesn’t expect to receive the results of the toxicology tests. He said the Sheriff’s Office hasn’t opened a new investigation into Adams’ death.

Jennifer Timmons, a SLED spokeswoman, said the report has been completed and referred questions to the coroner’s office. Woodard couldn’t be reached for comment.
