No, you're missing one between then and now -- Ringleader of the Tormentors. You're pretty much right on about You Are The Quarry -- those are two of the top 3 or 4 songs on the album, and the rest is pretty good.

I came here to post that I've been rocking out to the The Airborne Toxic Event and the song "Sometime Around Midnight" It's not really indicative of their sound, their lead singer sounds totally different on every track, so it's hard to peg them, but this is a pretty great rock and roll song.

Sometime Around Midnight - The Airborne Toxic Event

Also checking out the new M. Ward album, of course.

Asobi Seksu released a new LP called Hush.

I'd never listened to them, despite all of the buzz they've gotten in recent years. But I think I'm a fan. I just tend to like Shoegaze tho.

I would like to add to those who've already mentioned it and heap additional praise on Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavillion.

I certifiably hated this band 6 years ago after hearing their first two albums, so if anyone else felt the same way, I encourage you to give them a second chance.

It's an album that really gets better on repeated listenings.

I'll have to check that out -- I like what I've heard by them on Pandora, I think.

Ducktails
http://www.myspace.com/ducktailss

Just copying a review because I cant describe them.

For an East Coast band, Ducktails sound pretty sun-drenched and Californian to me. Matt Mondanile is the man behind the nostalgic moniker and he seems to be a part of a new wave of artists digging a peculiar blend of early 90's culture, tropical influenced music, psychedelic guitars, and simplistic 4-track style recording techniques. There appears to be a healthy appreciation for kitsch in Mondanile's song craft and instrumentation, but he somehow is able to remain completely genuine and heartfelt- almost childlike at times. Most of these songs are little instrumental pop gems with sweet hooks that stick in your mind and minimal drum beats that feel oddly danceable. When vocals are present they are obscured in the mix and don't seem to be the main focus. Some of what's going on here is reminiscent of Ariel Pink- willfully lo-fi and confusing at times but always remaining in a pop-centric frame of mind. At times I'm also reminded of the mood of more recent Black Dice recording, only without the abstraction. It's hard to describe, but there's a really enjoyable warm mood about all of this, and it's not quite like anything I've heard before. It's a fun listen and a nice diversion from the dronier side of things. This is scheduled to be released by Tape Tecktoniks soon, but I've got the self released version for now which is the same as far as I know. 9/10 -- Charles Franklin

I can't rave enough about the new Neko Case album Middle Cyclone.

I've been listening to it pretty much exclusively for the last week, and I think it's going to settle in to being widely regarded as her best album yet.

She's labeled generally 'Alternative Country' and I guess it works well enough, she has a lot of country/folk sensibilities but I think approaches it with just more of a rock soul. I dunno, don't take my word, this album is picking up assloads of tremendous reviews.

here's the opening track from the album ("This Tornado Loves You") on youtube:

YouTube - This Tornado Loves You

(She's also a major player in the band The New Pornographers, who have released at least 2 of the better albums this decade).

edit: I listen to a lot of stuff, and I want to stress that I'm not just saying 'yeah, this is ok.' I'm saying this will easily be one of the best albums released all year, and you really need to hear it. Act now suckas.

Neko Case is great. I'd downloaded this to my Zune last week, but had only listened to it sparingly and was annoyed today when I was thinking of how I'm still listening to a lot of albums from last year.

But I listened to this today -- that song you posted is awesome -- and it's a definite worthwhile check out, he's right.

The Bird & The Bee - Ray Guns Are Not Just the Future came out in January and it's probably my favorite album of the year. It's got way more of a downtempo feel to it (think Sia & Zero 7) than their last LP, so I like it more. But it's really just absurd pop lyrics that they make work pretty well.

My two favorite tracks are the title track

Ray Gun - the bird and the bee

and Polite Dance Song

Bought Cursive's new "Mama, I'm Swollen" from the Saddle Creek website for $5 (this was a few days ago...went up one dollar each day until it hit it's final price of $10, which coincided with it's regular retail release date)

Cursive is one of my favorite bands, so I'm excited to check it out, dubious title aside.

'Love Letter To Japan' is one of the songs i've really enjoyed a lot this year. haven't checked out the album yet though.

Since this seems like the most appropriate place to bring it up, Neko Case's album managed to debut at #3 this week - only behind the new U2 and Taylor Swift (arguably this countries most popular artist of the last year).

So...it's good to see some degree of commercial success for a genuinely great artist, even if U2 literally sold 10 times as many copies in being #1 (they sold about 500K and she sold in the mid 40k range).

K'Naan is a Somali-turned-Canadian who has a similar style to Mos Def with more African influences for the beats - I guess M.I.A. would be the example there. ABC's is a nice, uplifting song, and I think it was included on Madden 2009 so maybe it's been heard by some. YouTube - K'naan - ABC's (Embedding disabled.)

And just for old-school tracks, Bone Thugs East 1999 remixed over the Exorcist theme, done to an Air Up There highlight video

1 mainstream rap song - Maino featuring Clearchannel's favorite artist in hip-hop right now, T-Pain (seriously, he and his autotone shit has produced/featured on like 18 Billboard top 10 hits in the past 2 years.) Maino is a Bed-Stuy based MC who was in jail for 10 years... and much as I like Southern rap, it's time to get some more Brooklyn rappers back in the playlists.

Jack White has formed another band, The Dead Weather, with the female lead singer from The Kills, the bassist from The Raconteurs, and a guitarist from Queens of the Stone Age. As for Mr. White, he's playing drums on the album, which is coming out in June. Being a fan of all these acts, I'm looking forward to it.

You can listen to a couple songs at hxxp://www.thedeadweather.com.

Speaking of supergroups, I caught Tinted Windows on DirecTV's 101 over the weekend. Adam Schlesinger on bass, James Iha on guitar, Bun E. Carlos on drums, and Taylor Hanson on vocals - great power-poppy sound and Hanson surprisingly works wonderfully with this mix.

As per usual, I'm not listening to anything new, but I've recently discovered Eloy, a 70s German group that changed their sound a bit over the years, but could be described in their peak as a sort of crazed mix of Yes and Pink Floyd. Good stuff.

Got to listen to Doves' new album Kingdom of Rust. Very good stuff. "The Outsiders" and "Compulsion" are a couple of standouts.

Peter Bjorn & John's new album, on the other hand... not so good.

I like the Raconteurs a lot more than I like the White Stripes, and this sounds like it will be right up my alley as well.

in related news, I am REALLY pumped for Streetsweeper - Tom Morello and Boots Riley. Sounds very promising: index

Lacuna Coil has an album out in a few weeks that I'm looking forward to, as well as Camera Obscura.

But in other news, I listened to Whole Wheat Bread's newest single of their recent album, Hearts of Hoodlums that they put out in January.

It's more polished than their first album. They're still punk, but the melodies are tighter, the songs are better and they just sound like a more complete band. They could very well be headed for "next best thing" status. The only bad thing is, they still sound "insert pop-punk band" here.

Bombs Away by Whole Wheat Bread from Fly South on Vimeo.

Other albums worth checking out are:

God Forbid - Earthsblood (Metal)
Mirah - (a)spera (singer-songwriter/indie/hard to classify)
Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit - (country rock) He used to be in the Drive-By Truckers.
Here We Go Magic - Here We Go Magic (Hard to define, really. But it's indie rock in a band, minimalist-ish coffee shop rock.)

Not to be confused with Marah, who don't have anything new out but you should still have Kids in Philly in your collection......hard knockin' Springsteen/Steve Earle type of group....

On a side note for Dark Cloud -- how in the hell do you get the time to check out all this stuff?? Ever since my work blocked streaming my new music discovery time has been cut waaaaaaaay down.

Hehe...

Some people watch TV shows, watch copious amounts of sports and all of that. I don't do any of that stuff, really. I don't really play many games, some text sims, but not all of the time.

But the one constant for me is music. And I like to have lots of it and it used to be a lot harder to find the stuff.

So because I work online, that probably makes it easier too.

fun. (Nate Ruess of The Format, plus Andrew Dost and Jack Antonoff) will be releasing their new LP on May 5. Can stream one of the new tracks on their MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/fun

Finally got to give Eleni Mandell's latest a thorough listen-to today, and I really like it. Great singer, strong lyrics, and her band is extremely tight. Little edgy at times, but the music never overshadows Mandell's voice or her lyrics. Here is the video from the title track:

U2 - No Line on the Horizon. I have long been a fan of Brian Eno and his ambient electronic music. A lot of that in this U2 album. There are a few tracks I could do without but most of them are very accessible and readily listenable the first time through. Been a long time since that happened. ABomb grew on me, All That You.. never caught on for me. I really love stuff like Moment of Surrender, Fez, White as Snow, Cedars of Lebanon and Breathe.

Since I have nothing else to do, here's my take on the first 3 months of music this year. I've highlighted the 3 albums I've enjoyed the most, and a bunch of songs that are also great. I've also provided youtube links for your added enjoyment.

ESSENTIAL ALBUM #1:

Neko Case - Middle Cyclone
I think this is pretty clearly her best album yet. I could honestly talk for hours about this album at this point, and will do so with anyone who engages me. I'll say simply that in my case the spin counts are speaking for themselves, 3 of these songs are now in my Top 40 played all-time in my iTunes. I see no way this isn't my #1 album of 2009.

"This Tornado Loves You"
"People Got A Lot Of Nerve"

ESSENTIAL ALBUM #2:

Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillion
The quintessential 'needs repeated listens' album. It took me about 5 listens to get on board with the single ('My Girls'), and the rest of the album followed suit. Hated this band 5-6 years ago, but this album is for real.

"My Girls"

INTERESTING ALBUM #1:

The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart
I kind of dismissed this on the first two listens, but after playing it again i went back to it a few more times. It's not groundbreaking, but it's good. I don't know that i'll be listening to it in 2030, but it's good enough for 09. Additionally, if you're anything like me, you may be able to guess what this album sounds like based entirely on it's cover art. I hit it with about 90% accuracy.

"Everything With You"

ADDITIONAL GREAT SONGS OF 09 SO FAR W/ YOUTUBE LINKAGE

Morrissey - "I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris"
The Bird And The Bee - "Love Letter To Japan"
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - "Zero"
Coconut Records - "Microphone"
Bat For Lashes - "Daniel"
Silversun Pickups - "Panic Switch"
Feist & Ben Gibbard - "Train Song" *
*it should be noted that this is a cover, not an original.

ct you really got me to give that Neko Case a second listen a few months and it's emerged as my fav LP of the year so far. So kudos for that. I love Middle Cyclone and Magpie to the Morning among others but those are my two favs. Also agree on cover art. You can pass by a lot of good albums by their cover, but the cover art on great albums is usually 9 times out of 10 spot on.

The new Peter Bjorn and John album (Living Thing) has been a surprise favorite. I'd never really listened to any of their stuff, but I'm loving it. Tracks like Living Thing, It Don't Move Me, Nothing To Worry About and Stay This Way are my favs.

The new Silversun Pickups album Swoon isn't bad. It took a second listen through before I decide that it was actually good and worth listening to a lot. Basically, it's Billy Corgan-esque rock that would've fit find the 1990s. But it's accessible and it works okay.

Bone Tired, a track from the new Gomez album (A New Tide) isn't bad, besides that I haven't gotten far with that one yet.

Man, I really don't like this album. And I really liked Writer's Block, their last mainstream release.

Just now picked up Fate by Dr. Dog from last summer... man, what an album. They are very "lo-fi" sounding, but the songs are top notch. The first 5 songs on the album especially.

Speaking of lo-fi, the song "Fangela" by Here We Go Magic is one of my favorite songs of the year so far. Right there behind "Brother Sport" from Animal Collective, "The Wanting Comes in Waves / Repaid" by The Decemberists, and "Love Letter to Japan" by The Bird and the Bee.

Also got a listen to Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix by Phoenix. Nice, bouncy, polished alt-rock album. I think that's not coming out for another month and a half though.

Have to give Neko Case another listen... I liked the first couple of songs I heard, but haven't given it my full attention yet.

I will disagree on "Compulsion" which I just feel is so out there for a doves song (much like "Highly Suspcious" by My Morning Jacket). In fact, the first half is just awesome, and the doves have always been somewhat experimental (the balls to start off Lost Souls with an instrumental). But "Compulsion" as some critics point out does sound much in the same vein as "Rapture" by Blondie.

That being said, "The Outsiders" is a good rocking song (though I'd agrue the point that it's harder in rocking than "Pounding", or "Darker" which I think the guy in popmatters.com alludes too). I really like "Jetstream" which also is a mix of the old doves style of atmospherics, but also pretty electronic-oriented (which is actually very old doves when they were sub-sub). It does seem like a song to fit "Blade Runner" which is what they were going for. "Kingdom of Rust" is heavy on the Western theme in Britian (..."fog coming off the moors") which seems just like some of their better songs of previous albums (the "Man who Told Everything" belongs in a film noir movie). I also like "10.03" with its move from slow (with I think I hear a little slide guitar) to explosion, to resolution, which I think is a great song to their collection.

"Lost Souls" and "Last Broadcast" are still albums I could put on and enjoy, "Lost Souls" which a friend of mine called too dark, does have that darkness but then a song like "Catch the Sun" can so brighten everything up. "Last Broadcast" is also an album which I've never been bored of (but I really enjoy the b-side "Far From Grace" which I think should've been on that album). Their third album had an even weaker 1st half and I just really didn't enjoy it as much.

I've seen a lot of critics compare them to Elbow who apparantly blew up last year with "Seldom Scene Kid" but I like the doves better because they're not pop, nor rock, nor electronic, they mesh it all in atmospherics which make the songs lush with sound, and yes they can be as my friend said "too dark" but the words, music and atmospherics tend to give a better image than any rock song that Elbow has done (I like Elbow but they are a rock band, I can't say that doves are).

Still I like "Kingdom of Rust", it'll be in my rotation for a while, because the doves love to put a lot into their songs, so every listen tends to add something, and that makes for an enjoyable relisten everytime you play it.

The New Death Cab EP is very good and a return to form after their last album.

The first single "1901" is brilliant for sure. Itīs just incredible powerfull, especially considering the instrumentation. Itīs like a good Rock Song, just without the guitar sound

@ samifan : I thought the last Album was brilliant. Different, but brilliant. Then again i found "Plans" to be even better. But still, there was a lot to like for me
Didnīt know about an EP, will definitely listen to it ASAP now.

Iīm at work with no Flash player installed, so no youtube links, but what iīve listened to a lot recently :

Decemberists - Hazards of Love

not easy to get into and lacking a Hit Song but still a great output. Itīs a "concept album", basically telling a great love story. Great female guest vocals !

White Lies - to loose my life

british band. Not exactly original, but very powerfull mix of driving instrumentation and dark lyrics.
Somewhat comparable to the Editors if anyone remembers them.

From Monument to Masses - On little known Frequencies

Great Postrock Band with another great album. A little less melodic than one might think, definitely more Sigur Ros than Explosion in the Sky.

I guess this should have gone in last year's thread, but I'm just over 7 songs through A Certain Feeling by Bodies of Water, and I'm really liking it.

oh and there was a great Compilation release named Dark Was The Night that basically features a lot the very best from the indie-pop and Rock sector (decemberists, arcade fire, my brightest diamond, iron&wine, bon iver etc) for a good cause (against HIV/Aids) on 2 CDs for regular price. All new recordings and not just re-releases or b-sides, often interesting compilations between artists.
cthomer5000 allready mentioned Feist&Ben Gibbard - Train Song from that one.
Hereīs the link for a tracklist : Dark Was The Night

You can listen to a couple songs at hxxp://www.thedeadweather.com.

Hollleeeeeee crap. I have not heard of this before, but I'm super excited for it now! When I heard The Kills - Midnight Boom, I liked it a lot and it made me think of The White Stripes and want to listen to them again... So those two together is super awesome!! I like Jack White, and I'm glad he's trying out drums!

He also was the drummer for The Go for a brief period of time....not to mention he taught Meg how to play drums (go ahead make your jokes about Meg's drumming ability)

Detox, you're a real enigma. Your hair is too ratty to to put in a faux hawk, but you do wear affliction t-shirts two sizes too small.

I'm kind of listening to Band of Horses again, but I'm a bit embarrassed by that. Don't know why.

Why be embarassed by that? Both albums are great. Last week i listened to the second album (Cease To Begin) at least 10 times. It's great.

No One's Gonna Love You / Detlef Schrempf is one of my all-time favorite back-to-back song pairings on any album.

Agreed ! And the opener Is There a Ghost is just incredibly beautiful.

Right now i am listening to a lot of instrumental stuff from classical music (Bachīs brandenburg concertos especially) to Post Rock. Saw This Will Destroy You live a couple days ago here in Germany. Very small gig, 75 people in a tiny, made the music even more intense than usually.

And iīm listening to the new Mono album Hymn To The Immortal Wind a lot, only released a couple weeks ago and has earned a lot of great reviews. And itīs epic. Itīs like Post-Rock meets classical Symphony meets Film scores with a 28 piece orchestra in the background. And the song structures are just incredible.

Mono - Ashes in the Snow

Mono - Follow the Map

(this ones shorter at 4 minutes )

Some new albums

Camera Obscura - My Maudlin Career
Richard Swift - The Atlantic Ocean
BLK JKS - Mystery
Sara Watkins (from Nickel Creek) has an eponymous debut LP out now too.
Like A Fox - Where's My Golden Arm?
Doves - Kingdom of Rust
Chester French - Love The Future
Lacuna Coil - Shallow Life
Ida Maria - Fortress 'round My Heart

I've fired up The Pains of Being Pure At Heart LP, because I hadn't listened to it when it came out.
