Was the real concern really it being activated or when they decide to collide to particle beams? I'd assume it was the latter...

The actual colliding of particles will be during October, I believe.

But at least they were able to flip the switch and have a particle beam circumnavigate the entire LHC today.

I never quite understood why the media was latching onto today as "end of the world" day. Today was just shooting the particle beam in one direction- nothing exciting even happened. Now, when they start colliding stuff- that's when the fun begins with aliens, black holes, and time travelers.
