You really, really dislike Austria, huh? They keep getting screwed in all your examples!

woohoo, triple dola.

Quote:
Another example: Italy: A Ven - Tyr
Germany: A Mun support A Ven-Tyr
Austria: A Vie - Tyr

One other very basic thing that I think is probably important enough early in the game to point out here is the concept of cutting support.

Lets say Russia is in the mix too, not adjacent to Tyrolia, but, adjacent to Munich, and is allied with Austria and trying to help them out. We can add one more movement order here:

Italy: A Ven - Tyr
Germany: A Mun support A Ven-Tyr
Austria: A Vie - Tyr
Russia: A Sil-Mun

Now, russia is attacking munich. The army in Munich now must defend itself and can no longer offer support for the Italian move. This creates a giant stalemate where nothing changes at all for the four armies in question.

There's probably lots of other little nuances with moves that will come up, but that one is a very basic, key idea that goes along with describing unit support I think.

I had a long stretch where Italy/Austria/Turkey were my favorites to play, so that area is pretty much etched in my brain. I actually should go to a map or rulebook when answering questions!

Good point on cutting support. That is a key concept for the newer players.

This is a link to the other online rule book I found. It is not in color and is much faster to download and navigate. I believe this is from 1999, but I didn't see any differences between this and the 2008 book I linked to earlier.

I'll try to follow along even though I've never played.

Have any of you used one of the online sites like PHP Diplomacy or Play Diplomacy Online or World Leaders ? Would that be a good option for someone wanting to learn to play and perhaps get some friends together to play?

just a question about the turns, are we going to stick with a whole week for every turn after the first? or might we be shortening them up after the game gets going.

I would think that it would be best to keep a fair amount of time between turns. Maybe not a week, but no more than 2 turns a week because we need to have time to diplome.

Wheels, I haven't tried any of the sites you mentioned so can't comment on that. Feel free to PM me with any questions you have about what's going on and I'll be glad to answer the best I can.

If everyone wants to shorten up the turns at some point that's no problem, it's your guys game...I just want to make sure nobody feels too rushed with negotiations/real life.

Germany to Austria: Remember what happened to Ferdinand? You're next!

Is Italy serious about enjoying the French Riviera in Fall '01?

Russia and Turkey at each other's throats?

France to Germany: I'll be in the ENC by the end of the year.

I've always felt the opposite. There's a lot of fluff in the early turns and they could really go fairly quickly, but once the game gets going and each country has multiple fronts to worry about with multiple enemies, it never seems like there's enough time

Let's try this. Once I have received all orders for a turn, I will post that in thread and then give 12-24 hours for any sneaky revisions, then we'll adjudicate the turn.

Any objections?

Good job, guys -- almost all in now. Just for an FYI, it being one of the last days of summer here in Seattle I'm taking the sun-worshiping and ever-patient Ms.Path out for an outdoors date tonight but will adjudicate the turn after getting back.

Spring 1901 results

THE DAILY DIPLOMAT

END SPRING 1901

ITALY INVADES AUSTRIA!!

TYROLIA INVADED!

GREAT POWERS MANEUVER FOR POSITION.

ENGLAND & FRANCE RAPPORT?

RUSSIA TO SUMMER IN BLACK SEA.

(Switzerland) A nervous spring of sabre-rattling has continued to increase tensions throughout Europe, culminating in an Italian invasion of Tyrolia. It remains to be seen what repercussions are in store, or what Italy's intentions truly are.

Elsewhere, both Russia and England head towards Scandinavia, Germany moves into Denmark, Austria moves to Serbia and threatens Greece, as does Turkey with an excursion into Bulgaria. France and England go in different directions as France sets her sights on Iberia, while the Ionian Sea now is in control of the Italian Navy.

Diplomats continue to frantically try and prevent further spread of conflict, though it is rumored that some may not have entirely peaceful motives. Time will tell, however it is feared that peace will not be in the cards for Fall.

Cheers for initial moves!

That said, are we going to stick with a week between deadlines? Seems an awful long time - I'd prefer twice a week myself, which should be enough to allow negotiations, but not so long as to lose momentum.

I guess I'd be ok with twice a week, as long as neither deadline is on a weekend.

As I mentioned before, I'll leave official deadline as it is, but if I get all orders in earlier I'll give a 12 hour notice for revisions and then process.

Unless everyone posts they want it moved up, then no problem!

We'll make it official -- should we have the next deadline on Friday? Yea or nay.

THE DAILY DIPLOMAT

The only rapport between France and England is that they both understand what a "DMZ" is. Unlike some nations.

Austria's trust in Italy may be misplaced.

Refugees are already fleeing Rumania in advance of the upcoming conflict.

The Sunday deadline is fine for me, although I know there was some concern about weekends.

Very interesting movements... I'm shocked that Munich was left unprotected and neither France nor Italy took advantage, for one.
