I enjoy playing basketball even though I suck at it. I usually play some one-on-one games with fellow FOFC'er Cuckoo at least once a week. If we happened on a pick up game, we'll try to join in, but we usually play three games of 21. I used to be really good at hitting the long jump shot, but I am very erratic now. It's nice to recapture the glory days when the basket seems twice its normal size and I can't miss. Of course, Cuckoo hates it when I'm in the "zone."

I am not entirely sure of the very first sporting event I attended, but I remember going to the old Grand Rapids Owls games in the late 1970's. They were in the (now defunct) International Hockey League, and the games were brutal. It was seriously like being at the filming of "Slapshot". I remember one game where a fan near us started throwing stuff over the glass at a player on the bench, so the player climbed over the glass and commenced beating on the fan. There were games when everyone on the ice was fighting, some of the fans were fighting, and some of the players were fighting the fans in the stands. Now that I look back, I am amazed that my mother allowed my dad to take me to those games. I am also amazed that there wasn't police involvement.

Today's Question:

Can members of the opposite sex have a close friendship without either of them wanting more?

I think so. My closest friends were guys in college and I don't think there was any sexual tension there.

Yes. A lot of people, of course, fool themselves into thinking that is what they have when they actually have sexual tension. But just because it isn't as common as people think does not mean that it does not exist.

No. But they may have a close friendship without regard to the sexual desires they may have.

From my experience the answer is no. The women that I have been friends with in the past always ended up wanting more, for better or for worse. If people of the opposite sex get along on a close basis, it is usually because they have things in common, including an attraction for each other or for the same type of person. This ultimately leads to more than just "friendship".

I would encourage (tax breaks and what not) fuel cell car manufacturing and hydrogen filling stations.

That and monorails! (ok, maybe not)

When we went to Vegas a few years ago, I went to the video poker machines almost the whole time. Something about poker at tables intimidated me.

My uncle's basketball game at Bayless High School in St. Louis, 1981. I was 4 years old. I stood up and clapped when anyone else clapped.

Major league sport would have been the Marlins at the Cardinals, 1993. 11-1 win if I'm not mistaken. Gilkey hit a leadoff homerun and Alicea had a grandslam. I believe Allen Watson was on the mound for the Redbirds that day.

I would play the blackjack tables. The last time I played in Vegas, I won $1600.

Either a craps table or blackjack. I don't find gambling as fun as I did 10 years ago. I don't know why.

I don't gamble on table games or slots. I'd rather bet on a game where, IMO, I have some knowledge about the subject instead of leaving it most to chance or the roll of dice.

Sports book is usually my first stop. Blackjack, Poker and random slots after that, depending on the group I'm with and how drunk I am.

I stayed at the MGM last time there and played that for awhile. I get that there's some sort of trick to beat it but I'm not sure what it is. Nice little time waster though.

Didn't think about Sports Books. I think the last 2 times I went, that'll all I bet on since I really don't consider the casino floor to be much fun, except as a spectator.

1) A brother (seven years older) and a sister (five years older)

2) I would say that we're pretty close. We all live in the DFW area (though my brother might not be after the DaMN gets done with their layoffs), are all passionate about UTEP sports, and we get extremely goofy when we all get together. We can't always hang out as often as we would like (I saw my sister on Friday for the first time since the 4th of July, and I haven't seen my bro in probably a couple of months), but we're always e-mailing back and forth and chatting on the UTEP boards...

1. I have a sister, 3 1/2 years younger than me.

2. We were always fairly close in the past, but have become really good friends since I moved back up to North Carolina at the start of this year. This has really been one of the most rewarding things about moving home.

I never noticed this thread before. Anyway, I'd really like to answer the first question about the first sporting event I attended. It was an exhibition between the Yankees and Blue Jays at the Louisiana Superdome, on March 27, 1983. I was 6 years old, and as I remember it, my dad got me pennants for both teams, which I put on my bedroom wall when I got home. I must have had those pennants up for two or three years, but I didn't care one bit about the American League. Even at age 6, I was a senior circuit guy. I didn't get to see a National League team play until 6 years later when the Giants played the A's in the Superdome. That's another story for another time (probably never), though.

1. I have four brothers. Ages are 42, 39, 38, and 30.

2. I'm closest to the second oldest. We have similar interests and philosophies. I'm fairly close to my other three brothers, but we live a fair distance (45 miles), so I don't see them as often.

Two cats, a ten year old orange and white tabby, and a four year old grey and white tabby. The older one is cool and mellow, while the younger one is a spazz.

And yes, they're both shedding like crazy right now.

I don't think I have one. I enjoy the team events and I enjoy a lot of the individual stuff. I'm just not a huge Olympics fan in general, they've lost the luster they used to hold.
