I would like a son named "William" that goes by "Will." But you can't force the shortening of it. I could just do "Will", but "William" is somewhat of a family name. But, as stated above, I don't even know if I'll have any kids.

In all seriousness I tend to like ambiguous names, like Kelly. I dated a girl named Blake and thought that was kind of a cool chick name, and I have a good friend named Cheyenne, and that's a guy. So you see what I'm getting at.
Then again, I also have entertained naming my kid Ace. So take it at face value. |

My wife mentioned the "J,K,L,M" thing too. Then she proposed Kelsey or some such name. Now that I say it out loud doesnt seem as bad.

Funny, my wife and I named our daughter Emma 2 years ago and then found out it was the most popular name for a girl. Oddly enough, our choice for a boy's name would've been Jacob. Neither of us did any "research" into picking names guess it was a subcounscious thing...mind you Jacob is more for my dad...he goes by Jack but my brother and I call him Jake.
Our second one is due tomorrow and Jacob is still the front runner for a boy but we haven't even spoken about a girl's name...guess we should get on that. My wife likes the "unique" names and I'm more of a traditionalist (or don't want the kid to have worry about telling people how to spell her name her whole life) so we'll be butting heads. Some of her favs from last time: Sadie and Selia |

Oh...I'd love to name a son, if we ever have one, Seamus but the wife absolutely vetoed that one despite being half Irish. BOO!!!!

I like traditional names as well, but more along the lines of unique-traditional (if that makes any sense). Example: Alexander is traditional but I have never personally met anyone with that name. Ever. I agree with you about the spelling of names too. Karen = Caren???? Poor kid will always have to say "No, it is spelled with a C"....

I love Sadie! That is getting added to the baby name list...it's classic, timeless and sounds good on a little girl or an adult.

There are people who named their kids Espn, after the network...how about naming a boy Fofc? Not sure how you would pronounce that but it would be cool

Mine is also fairly common and is not in the Top 100, I guess enough people named their daughter Julie in the 1970's that it's going to take awhile to become popular again...

I like Julie and would add it to the list except it's an ex's name...wouldn't feel right. Just like Jamie is a favorite of mine for a boy but my wife had an ex with the same name so it's automatically off the list, too. |

It's a good name...there are so many Julie's out there, and my middle name is Ann, which was also really popular. But I'm actually named after my paternal grandfather (Julius) and my maternal great-grandmother (Anna Maria). I know how you feel with the ex's, I love the name Michael, but dated a guy named Michael and think of him whenever I hear the name, couldn't name a son that for that reason alone... |

I dunno what you would name the kid if it's a boy, though.

My daughter is Quintana (pronounce it in Spanish), Quinn for short. If we have another (which I doubt) and it was a boy, it would probably be Santana.

Helena and Scott. Or Sidney for a neutral gender name.
Jaxon? Ryker? Nevaeh? These are top 100? Or be like me and threaten to name my kids Amber and Porter if we ever had any.

Actually, one of the more interesting parts in Freakonomics is the one about baby names. If he's right, there are going to be a bunch of screwed up kids names out there in the next 20 years. The basic theory is that the names of the rich now are the popular names of the "common people" next generation. SI

When I was 5 and hated my name because of how unusual it was, if you told me that 20 years later it would be considered one of the most popular names in the country or it would be recommended by posters on a text sim message board, my 5 year old self would've called you fucking crazy. And MikeVic has once again freaked me out. |

Nevaeh is Heaven spelled backwards...I just heard about it a week or so ago, but that is the latest name crazy down here. Aiden is also very popular, as is the "classics" like Emma, Grace, Sophie, etc... I prefer the more unusual, but not strange names. I don't want my kid to to be one of 2 or 3 kids in his class with the same name. BTW, I actually know someone who had identical twin boys and named them Hunter and Fisher. True story. Each name on it's own is fine, but together...not so much. |

If we end up having twins, we will have enough children to put together a basketball team (minus the bench - 6th man award irrelevant). I am waiting for the day that we can all take turns saying goodnight to each other and turn off lights (aka the Waltons). Come to think of it, I never liked that show. Or the Brady Bunch. What was I talking about again?

Here's the summary: http://www.slate.com/id/2116505/#sb2116512 I think the Internet may end up being a great equalizer here, especially that baby name popularity tracker. I don't know if you'll be able to accurately predict based on history, now that everyone planning to have a baby knows that naming your kid something like Amber is dooming them to life as a pornstar or drug mule. Maybe the next generation of porn stars will have names like Clementine and Agatha. Last edited by Desnudo : 06-23-2008 at 11:52 AM. |

Update:
My wife went to the doctor yesterday and we have our first ultrasound pictures. Even after the 4th child, those pictures are still pretty cool. Due date is January 14. My wife really likes the name Emily if we have a girl, and for a boys name, well..... We agree on Roman. Yes, Roman. I actually knew a guy named Roman once (he was much older though and not from the U.S.). I tried for Hancock but the wife wasn't buying it.
