One game in and aside from a few defensive plays, you can't tell me Hopper wouldn't be a better fit as a leadoff hitter. Frustrating as all hell.

Not to mention Votto sitting on the bench, not getting to play, and using Hopper as a PH in the 7th.

It's the first game guys. Hatteberg should be starting until Votto starts to show he can hit again. I can't say I'm sold on Patterson but let's wait and see first.

1 game, but the more I thought about it I just hate everything about it... because Patterson's career line:

.258 (BA) .298 (OBP)

Is significantly lower than Hopper's (in an albeit smaller sample size):

.332 .379
I just don't know what the signing accomplished at all.

Let's be honest. Hopper, Patterson, Freel -- it doesn't matter. Come June 1st, Bruce will be up and will be playing CF.

Yo Shortstuff, just want you to know that my chosen team for this season's OOTP5 career will be the Reds. I am planning on playing, as I typically do, historical starting in 1948 and hopefully go to 1972.

Almost said the same thing but if you think about all the variables, he may have a completely different Reds team by the time the 70's would roll around

When exactly is he going to show he can hit? He's not exactly in a platoon with Hatteberg, since they're both lefties. Hatteberg would be a great PH. Votto will not.

On the bright side, Reds Rocket has started blogging again: http://theredsrocket.blogspot.com/

Funny stuff - I particularly enjoyed his breakdown of the various positions based on how they could best benefit him personally.

Yeah, it only takes two seasons for everything to be really different. That's why it is so obsessive to me because even though I typically play around Golden Age, it's pretty much different each time. Historical replay holds no interest for me, unlike an alternate career using historical players.

I'm stopping at 1972 because that would be 25 seasons. That's how many lines I have available on my career log spreadsheet, plus there's a really nice 25-set 3-ring dividers. I'm anal like that and I pretty soon, I'm going to have to buy storage space for all my 3-ring binders of game logs.

Most overrated
2008: Juan Uribe, Chicago. I'm not sure anybody even thinks that highly of him, but apparently the White Sox do. They should have released him, but instead are starting him at second base. He has more than 3,000 career at-bats with an on-base percentage worse than .300. Only two other players still have a job after being that bad for that long: Alex Gonzalez and Corey Patterson.

Brantley, after Eddie hesitates on 3 straight bunt attempts and goes down 1-2 in the count. The following then ensues:

Brantley: If you want to bunt, take him out. He isn't clutch.
Thom: His numbers indicate otherwise
Brantley: This guy is not a clutch-
ball is pitched
Brantley: -player
ball leaves park

REDS WIN!!! 6-5! Eddie makes up for his terrible throw earlier!

By the by, anyone know whats up with the new FSN HD channell?

I think it started appearing on March 23, but since then it just says HD Promo all day long and I was anticipating watching the Reds/Cavs in HD-utopia and wondering when it'll actually kick in.

Fundamentally, he's all over the place both at the plate and in the field. He tends to get off balance forward on a lot of his swings which makes him a punch-and-judy hitter, when he even makes contact on those swings. In the field, he has a tendency to stay low ( crouched ) as he throws and as a result with "tilted shoulders" which causes him to throw off-balance. I saw it tonight on that ball he air-mailed past Bako.

All of that said, I think that there's more to him than his face and posture show. Last year he showed me that he makes adjustments so quickly that he even does it in the same at-bat. I think he's having to fight what "feels right" because he's so naturally gifted in favor of what the coaches tell him "is right" mechanically.

He'll never be a gold glover, but as far as I'm concerned, I hope that he is a Red for a long time, even if it means a switch to left field or first base. He should be a quality bat for some time to come, just so long as he's not asked to bunt with the game on the line. [grin]

I don't know but its unbelievable frustrating to watch all the games in HD and then to not see the Reds in HD. It's shameful.

That was an awesome exchange. I totally agreed with Thom Brennaman, and couldn't believe what Brantley was saying about Encarnacion not being clutch. The guy may make 3 throwing errors, but I don't think any Reds are better at getting a key hit in the late stages of a game. Brantley is an idiot.

So far, Davis pitched to our first 8 batters and Bako left the bases loaded with a groundout as we only got 2 runs - why is he starting two games in a row?

But Cueto's first 2 career big league innings, no hits 3 k's

For whatever reason Reds games are never on during the day ( obviously ratings, etc...) but they black the game out on mlb.com and the gameday package, so I can't even watch the games there.

Krivsky canned, that's too bad. He's done a lot of good things for us, IMHO.

Bring on Walt Jocketty, a man with a good track record.

All of Wayne's moves

  • 3-21-06: Acquired David Ross for Bobby Basham.
  • 4-7-06: Acquired Brandon Phillips for Jeff Stevens.
  • 5-26-06: Traded Cody Ross to Marlins for a player to be named later.
  • June '06: Selected Drew Stubbs eighth overall in draft.
  • 7-6-06: Acquired Eddie Guardado for Travis Chick.
  • 7-13-06: Acquired Gary Majewski, Bill Bray, Royce Clayton, Brendan Harris, and Daryl Thompson for Austin Kearns, Felipe Lopez, and Ryan Wagner.
  • 7-26-06: Signed Hatteberg to a one-year, $1.65MM extension.
  • 7-31-06: Acquired Rheal Cormier for Justin Germano.
  • 7-31-06: Acquired Kyle Lohse for Zach Ward.
  • 8-7-06: Acquired Ryan Franklin for a player to be named later.
  • 8-16-06: Acquired Scott Schoeneweis for a player to be named later.
  • 8-28-06: Signed Javier Valentin to a one-year, $1.325MM extension.
  • 9-25-06: Signed Juan Castro to a two-year, $2MM extension.
  • 11-20-06: Signed Alex Gonzalez to a three-year, $14MM contract.
  • 11-20-06: Signed Mike Stanton to a two-year, $5.5MM contract.
  • 11-20-06: Traded Jason LaRue to the Royals for a player to be named later.

  • 1-2-07: Traded Brendan Harris to Rays for cash.
  • 1-10-07: Acquired Jeff Keppinger for Russ Haltiwanger.

Krivsky made some great pickups from the trash heap, Phillips and Hamilton in particular, but he has more misses than hits. My guess is all the money going to Cormier, Stanton, Majewski, Patterson, Castro, Fogg, Freel and Gonzalez is what cost him his job. By my count that's somewhere around 17-20 million dollars going to players not on the team, backups and a shitty starter. A small market club won't win with that much wasted cash.

At the same time, I bet if you look around at most teams the hit/miss ratio is probably 1:3 too. I'll take Phillips/Hamilton-turned-Volquez type guys for a few blown contracts any time.

Or maybe I'm just spoiled because we used to have Bowden.

Here are the things that killed him:

1. Trade with the Nationals. What I thought was decent at the time has been a terrible trade.

2. Corey Patterson at 3 million when we already had two centerfielders who easily could product what Patterson has at the leadoff position. Not to mention Bruce.

3. Josh Fogg for a million.....what a joke.

4. Paying Stanton 3.5 million right now to sit at home

I really don't think his trading is what did him in, so much as some of the contracts he's made out.

It's obvious now that Jocketty wasn't there just to take over when something bad happened, but for him to have just long enough to get to know the organization and farm system. The slow start was just a convenient excuse to make the move.
