2004 First Round Games

Darn! I didn't have the Save All Boxscores selected, so for the first round of this years tournament I will be unable to give any game notes. They will be noted in round two games.

Code:
Game 1 #7 Oregon (10-1) vs #9 Louisiana State (9-2) The game lived up to it's two team's tight rankings as Oregon pulls off the 21-17 Win! Game 2 #10 Nebraska (10-2) vs #6 Texas A&M (10-1) Another good game against two evenly matched teams as Nebraska holds on for 24-17 Win! Game 3 #3 Miami of Florida (10-1) vs #12 Florida (9-2) This inter-state rivalry turned into a blood bath as Florida SQUEEKS out a 13-10 Win. Game 4 #13 Penn State (9-2) vs #44 Marshall (8-4) Marshall made a decent showing against the bigger conference foe, but in the end Penn State's depth of talent wins the day as State wins 37-18. Game 5 #14 Wisconsin (9-2) vs #38 Bloomington (9-2) The Solecismic Eight champions Bloomington were completely out of their league in the first year of the tournament as Wisconsin mauls them 55-0. Game 6 #15 Georgia (8-3) vs #33 Boise State (8-3) Another conference mismatch as Georgia destroys Boise State 51-14. Game 7 #16 Washington (8-3) vs #27 Notre Dame (7-4) First Upset of the tournament. Not the fact that Notre Dame won so much as how they won, Very Lopsided! 34-9 ND. Game 8 #18 Auburn (8-3) vs #22 Middle Tennessee State (10-1) Auburn completely dominates in this game 52-3!

So, there are the first round results. Nothing major, but the Notre Dame game kind of surprised me. On to Week 2!

Northwestern News

On the home front, TE Rich Belt was caught committing a serious violation of team rules. (Caught sneaking into the women's dorm after hours) He was suspended for the infraction. Rich started 10 of 11 games this season for the Wildcats with 10 catches for 114 yds.

2004 Sweet Sixteen

Code:
Game 1 #6 Oregon (11-1)(-13) vs #23 Texas Christian (9-2) Oregon 0 14 7 10 - 31 Texas Christian 3 0 0 0 - 3 Oregon uses a balanced attack to stymie TCU in the rain. The Ducks were in their element as they threw for 200+ yds and 2 TDs and ran for 200+ and 2 TDs. A complete game for Oregon. Game 2 #7 Nebraska (11-2)(-12) vs #12 Syracuse (10-1) Nebraska 3 3 0 9 - 15 Syracuse 7 10 0 0 - 17 The Orange Men take advantage of their 17 point first half lead and let their defense hold on for the upset victory! 4 Nebraska turnovers just too much to overcome. Game 3 #13 Wisconsin (10-2)(-3) vs #10 Utah (10-1) Wisconsin 10 0 3 0 - 13 Utah 0 14 0 10 - 24 In a sloppy game that had 6 INTs between the 2 teams, Utah raised it's game in the second half to prove to the nation that their #10 ranking isn't a fluke! Game 4 #9 Florida (10-2) vs #3 Tennessee (11-1)(-7) Florida 0 0 0 0 - 0 Tennessee 3 7 7 14 - 31 The Vols dominate both sides of the ball for a statement victory over fellow conference foe. Florida was never in this one folks. Game 5 #11 Penn State (10-2) vs #1 Southern California (11-0)(-9) Penn State 6 0 0 0 - 6 Southern California 0 7 17 13 - 37 Penn State scores early, but this one was all Trojans! Penn State never got the offense rolling, while USC was slow to get going they finally started hitting on all gears and rolled over the Nittany Lions! #1 Indeed! Game 6 #4 Oklahoma (10-2)(-2) vs #17 Georgia (9-3) Oklahoma 7 3 6 0 - 16 Georgia 7 7 0 3 - 17 In the best game of the day, Georgia uses a late 4th Quarter FG to pull off the upset victory that sends #4 Oklahoma home early. The stats between these two teams were as close as the score! Game 7 #8 Iowa (10-1) vs #21 Auburn (9-3)(-3) Iowa 0 7 7 10 - 24 Auburn 0 7 7 0 - 14 Iowa's WR James Hughes scores three TDs (Punt Return, End Around, Pass) in a closely fought game that saw the Hawkeyes win it in the 4th Quarter. A Late Auburn INT halted any comeback attempt. Game 8 #2 Florida State (10-1) (-3) vs #27 Notre Dame (8-4) Florida State 0 14 3 14 - 31 Notre Dame 0 0 3 7 - 10 Three INTs and 37 yds rushing on 32 carries does in the Irish as FSU wins in decisive manner.

2004 Quarterfinals!!

Code:
Game 1 #6 Iowa (11-1)(-2) vs #5 Oregon (12-1) Iowa 7 6 3 0 - 16 Oregon 7 3 14 0 - 24 Making the proper halftime adjustments on defense, Oregon shuts down Iowa in the second half! Iowa had a late shot at the victory, but on a 3rd and 10 at midfield, Iowa turned the ball over and Oregon ran the last 3 minutes off the clock to advance! Game 2 #2 Florida State (11-1)(-6) vs #7 Utah (11-1) Florida State 0 34 7 7 - 48 Utah 7 0 0 0 - 7 Neither team could run, but FSU threw for 434 yds and 5 TDs in a complete blowout. Utah had a good run and are thankful for a system that allowed them to lose on the field and not in the papers! Game 3 #9 Syracuse (11-1) vs #3 Tennessee (12-1)(-9) Syracuse 0 7 0 0 - 7 Tennessee 21 7 10 7 - 45 Can you believe that it was Tennessee and not Syracuse that had 5 turnovers? This game had the Vols toying with the Orange all day. The Vols were the Superior team. Game 4 #1 Southern California (12-0)(-6) vs #12 Georgia (10-3) Southern California 7 7 0 3 - 17 Georgia 0 3 7 0 - 10 In the game of the day, Georgia moved the ball to the 50 yardline with over a minute left when an errant pass found it's way into the hands of USC, who held on for the hard fought win! Great Game!!

2004 Semifinals

Code:
Game 1 #2 Florida State (12-1)(-1) vs #3 Tennessee (13-1) Florida State 14 0 7 15 - 36 Tennessee 0 24 3 17 - 44 FSU has 5 turnovers and in the end runs out of time as they score the final 15 points. Snow seemed to be the un-doing of the Seminoles. Tennessee capitalized on it's chances and are head to the National Title Game! Game 2 #5 Oregon (13-1) vs #1 Southern California (13-0)(-4) Oregon 0 10 0 0 - 10 Southern California 0 0 14 7 - 21 Oregon had to like their chances against the #1 team in the country as they led 10-0 at the half. Unfortunately for the Ducks, the Trojans remembered why they were ranked so high as they totally shut down the Oregon "O" in the second half holding them to 37 total yds on the half.

The 2004 National Title Game!!!

This is what it is all about! The whole nation has been watching for the past
several week to see if the cream really does rise to the top. And, in this year
at least, it seems to be the case!

Tennessee used a pounding running attack and a 'bend but don't break' defensive
approach to win the 2004 College Championship! Congratulations to the
true champion Volunteers!!!

Back To The Future 2005!!!

Start of a new season and the turning of a new leaf so to speak. As we look at the incoming freshman and our staff, we see the following needs for the new year and aims for recruiting.

STAFF! What can we say? We have fired the Syndicate Coordinator, Offensive Coordinator, Defensive Coordinator and the Mid-West Scout!
So, four positions will have to be filled.

PLAYERS! Incoming freshman are going to fill some holes with some immediate upgrades and some with potential. That said, we will be losing about 20 players at the end of the 2005 season, so we will not be able to completely fill our needs in recruiting. That said, there are some glaring needs!

QB seems to be a must. Shultz did not develope well and there isn't anything in the cupboard.

RB is ok, but the future is bleak! One RB would be a benefit.

WR is better, but one more upgrade would be very useful. That said, we could bypass this position for other dire needs.

C in a need.

G is a dire need. We will need 2 this year, and recruits are better than walkons!

T is a need.

P/K is a need next year, but will not be top priority. (Duh!)

DE is a DIRE need. We were unable to get one this past year and now we will need 2 this coming cycle.

DT would be a nicety.

ILB is a must. After this year the cupboard is bare.

So, as you can see, we are still in the position of filling needs at Northwestern. This could be a longer rebuilding effort than first expected.

2005 Roster Breakdown

While it doesn't look much better than the 2004 version, the 2005 Wildcats will be a somewhat different team than last year. With a new coaching staff and a few new faces, I would not count out a 3 win season,...... I wouldn't necessarily count it in though either!

Here we go........

Quarterbacks
Code:
Player # Pos Elig Current Estimate Future Estimate Helton, Walter 8 QB Sr 25 25 Andersen, Reggie 15 QB Sr* 28 43 Fulton, Earl 10 QB Jr* 20 20 Schultz, Bobby 2 QB So 14 55 Harris, Ted 19 QB Fr 11 33

Shultz will be the starter. Andersen was going to be his backup this season allowing us to redshirt freshman Ted Harris, but Andersen is suspended due to grades in the spring semester and will be ineligible for the year. Harris will be a backup. Help is need here!!

Running Backs
Code:
Lowe, Carlton 42 RB Jr 45 61 Curtis, Billy 40 RB Jr 36 52 Newcomb, Willie 35 RB Sr* 31 48 Read, Daniel 31 RB Jr* 46 73 Rawlins, Jimmy 36 FB So* 17 45 Doyle, Cornelius 49 FB Jr* 28 33 Gardner, Kim 41 FB Jr 28 47 Zaragoza, Charles 45 FB Fr 16 54 Pierce, Carl 48 FB* So 19 23

Read will be the starting RB going into the season with the hopes of sparking some form of running game. The Wildcats have yet to record a 100 yd rushing day for any of their backs, so hopefully that will change with Read. Read will be backed up by last years starter Lowe. Gardner will again start at FB and freshman Charles Zaragoza will be redshirted. We will be targeting a RB this year in recruiting.

Receivers
Code:
Harris, Byron 90 TE Jr* 14 32 Leech, Rex 95 TE Jr* 19 40 Flynn, D.J. 97 TE Jr 31 33 Phillips, Dwayne 89 TE Jr* 22 67 Belt, Rich 82 TE Sr 44 69 Giles, Robbie 83 WR Sr 23 23 Harwell, Bernard 6 WR So 22 31 Bryant, Martin 87 WR Sr* 24 24 Walton, Roman 81 WR So 20 25 Monroe, Brent 80 WR Sr 33 33 Moreland, Tommy 4 WR Fr 12 53 Reed, Kerry 7 WR Fr 15 48 Knight, Carlton 86 WR Fr 21 88 McKnight, Clyde 85 WR* So 17 20 Willett, Mitchell 88 WR* Sr* 20 34

Tight End is set with Belt as starter. Phillips is a capable backup, but TE is a need but may be overlooked in the recruiting cycle this year. WR got an upgrade this year with the addition of freshman Carlton Knight, who will start at flanker. Monroe will get the split end duties with the rest of the cast of millions providing support. Moreland and Reed will get a chance to develope this year as they will be redshirted. Also, Mitchell Willett is still recovering from a knee injury and will not be available this year. (I didn't have the heart to cut him)

Rose will start at center this year. Bell and Marshall will be the starting guards. Macri and Yocum will get the nod at the tackles. George Campbell get redshirted. The O-line will be the main concern going into the recruiting cycle. As it looks now, a center, 2 guards and another tackle are a definite need.

So that sums up the offense. We Need Help!

2005 Roster Breakdown - Defense

Now on to the defense......

Defensive Line
Code:
Schaeffer, Keith 78 DE Sr 41 57 Sanford, Gene 70 DE Sr 45 57 Pritchett, Dale 99 DE Sr 40 56 Grier, Les 75 DE* Sr* 3 31 Rogers, Vince 71 DE* Jr* 4 21 Peltier, Jackie 77 DE* So* 24 33 Rolfe, Nick 74 DT Sr 25 46 Lowe, Ellis 76 DT Fr 8 10 Covington, Russell 91 DT Fr 17 41 Beane, Jerry 96 DT* Sr* 17 24 Bandhauer, Dwight 79 DT* So 11 32
Schaeffer and Sanford will start at DE with Pritchett filling in and replacing Schaeffer on passing downs. True freshman Covington and Sr Rolfe will be the DTs. Just like on offense, the D-Line will be tageted heaving in recruiting with an emphasis on DE since most will be graduating at the end of the year.

Linebackers
Code:
Layton, Fred 92 ILB So 14 33 Ogden, Mack 94 ILB Sr 45 57 Bowen, Derek 58 ILB Sr 50 50 Browning, Clarence 59 ILB* So 23 41 Burks, Bryant 55 OLB Jr* 16 35 Bailey, Mitch 44 OLB Jr 34 53 Grayson, Carl 50 OLB Fr 21 100 Boatwright, Leon 93 OLB* Sr* 23 50
Bowen is our starting ILB with Ogden being a good fill-in. At OLB, Bailey and true freshman Carl Grayson will be starters. Grayson has the potential to be something special, barring injury. With both ILBs being seniors, ILB is a dire need and will be targeted.

Defensive Backs
Code:
Brown, Stephen 43 CB So 42 52 Newsome, Ralph 47 CB Fr 12 23 Schneider, Cary 26 CB Fr 12 45 Delgado, J.T. 21 CB Fr 17 90 Reel, Jorge 34 CB Fr 14 30 Cole, Rod 27 CB* So 14 49 Garner, Roman 29 CB* So 16 60 Conley, Roman 33 CB* Sr 6 19 Oliver, Jeremy 39 S Jr 35 35 Zellars, Arnold 37 S Sr 31 31 Wynn, Dwayne 46 S Fr 32 45 Perkins, Marco 38 S Fr 12 44 Henson, Ian 25 S Fr 18 57
Big Ten Freshman Defensive Player Of The Year - Stephen Brown will start at one corner with Garner starting at the other. Cole, returning from a knee injury will be a key player also and may take over should Garner stumble. True freshman Dwayne Wynn will start at strong safety with Oliver filling the free slot. CBs Delgado and Schneider, plus S Henson all get a year to develope.

Kickers
Code:
Matuatia, Aaron 3 P Sr 40 53 Terrell, Phil 18 P Sr 40 40 Timlin, Tyrell 16 P Sr 53 64 Montague, Skip 14 K Sr* 42 49 Preston, Wally 12 K Sr 58 69
As you can see, with both Timlin and Preston being seniors, we may be forced to go after a kicker, but he will be down on the list.

So, as you can see, we have a few new faces this year with new coordinators guiding them. I just want to see some improvement on both sides of the ball. And considering last seasons results, improvement won't take much.

Week 2 Game Report

Central Michigan (0-0) VS Northwestern (0-0)

The Northwestern Wildcats start the 2005 season with an altered roster and new coaches at the helm. Will this make a difference? Time will tell.

So how did this game go? The Wildcats start off with a big win at home!! We also accomplished a first as RB Read went over 100 yds rushing in a game,.... a first under present leadership. Let's hope we can build on this.

Week 3 Game Report

Duke (0-2) VS #47 Northwestern (1-0) (-6)

Northwestern plays a second week at home. It would be great to pull this one off........

We do, in a big way! Granted, the past 2 weeks are against very weak teams, but when you are rebuilding and recruiting against the big boys, every win counts!

RB Read has another big game as he goes over 200 yds rushing!!

Those are 2 nasty losses.

It still looks like the Wildcats are turning the corner. And there's no shame losing to Wisconsin and Michigan.

Yeah, and to be honest, I'll be happy with one more win this season. All we can do is to keep chipping away.

Ouch! We head into the Ohio State game without our starting QB and both of our starting OLBs! Not good at all! (Nothing new on the recruiting front.)

Week 7 Game Report

Northwestern (3-2) VS #28 Ohio State (3-2) (-14)

The Wildcats will be going with the true freshman QB Ted Harris and a pair of backup OLBs. This does not bode well. Not to mention Ohio State will be looking for payback after losing to the 'Cats last year in their only victory. Let's see how bad it can get.......

Bad! 28-0! Paybacks are a ...... well, you know! The freshman QB filled in ok for Schultz, but not good enough against a good team and stormy weather. RB Read just doesn't have room to run against good teams. All this equals the Wildcats 3rd loss in a row.
