Whoa, there's a surprise. Cubs with a giant payroll and a lousy team. Almost spooky....

Yeah, just like RL, they can't keep their pitching staff healthy for a whole season.

He's been playing RF and spot starts on 3B and 1B. He's getting less playing time now that his ratings are declining and Gerut was at RF.

This season things have changed a bit.

I purchased 6.5 about a month ago, after OOTP2006 came out.

So...yes.

P Chris Lambert will come up from AAA and complete the pitching staff to start the 2009 season. Chris is a 26yr old pitcher from Boston. His ratings are (stuff - 13, control - 12, movement - 13) and his velocity is 89-92.

He started 9 games in the majors last year:

and the rest of his time has been in the minors:

Our bullpen remains untouched for the start of the 2009 season.

MR Kiko Calero (2008) 79 g, 6-5, 3.47, 6 sv
MR Josh Hancock (2008) 23 g, 0-1, 4.55
MR Sean Tracey (2008) 55 g, 3-4, 5.71, 3 sv
MR Jake Woods (2008) 63 g, 2-1, 5.31, 2 sv

SU Brad Thompson (2008) 89 g, 5-2, 4.25, 10 sv

CL Chad Cordero (2008) 59 g, 6-6, 3.88, 36 sv, 6 bs (85.7%)

We'll see how big of an impact losing Carpenter is, but I'm not too worried right now.

Trade with Los Angeles (A) :
Los Angeles (A) gets :
LF Jody Gerut
We get :
RF Cody Johnson

After looking at our AAA team, the Memphis Redbirds, prospect 1B Victor Hicks caught my eye and my mind started working.

Hicks was drafted in the 9th round, 265th overall in 2006. Definitly our best hitter in AAA last year with 35 hr, 108 rbi, and hit 0.336. Some really great numbers for this 24yr old ballplayer.

It was time for Victor's shot at the big league level. Victor would play 1B and Pujols would go into LF. Something would have to give and I decided to trade RF Jody Gerut. Jody Gerut played well for us and I was happy with his play, but I felt Victor was ready. Victor has played for 6 different teams and LAA would be his 7th.

I thought Victor Hicks had a monster year in AAA last year.. then the Angels GM faxes over RF Cody Johnson's minor league stats.

Wow, 68 hr - 134 rbi - 0.337 - and an OPS of 1.184? Are you kidding me? His ratings are not eye popping (10 contact, 12 gap, 19 power, 12 disipline, 8 avoid k's), but seems like he's coming of age in the minors. I'll start him in AAA and go from there.

He was the 11th overall pick in 2006.

Gerut shores up the Angels OF, but is more of an insurance player than an everyday player for them at this point in time.

Chicago could definitly challenge for the top spot in the central division this year. They have a solid pitching staff and a good lineup. The only question is, can they stay realitivly healthy?

The division gets tighter with the Reds this year. They've made some good moves and have some young talent thrown in the mix as well. Closer Ryan Wagner was 2nd in saves last year with 38.

Jason Bay had a monsterous year, but Pittsburgh is still not as deep in hitting or pitching as St. Louis, Chicago, or Cincinnati. They could still surprise us, but I don't look for them to be in the hunt after the all star break.

The Brewers finished last in 2008 and this year doesn't look much different unfortunetly for the Brew Crew. They've added some pop, but pitching is what will do them in this year.

Should be a fun season between the Cardinals, Cubs, and the Reds as they battle for the division, but I still think we are too deep.

Trade with San Francisco :
San Francisco gets :
P Jake Woods
We get :
P Armando Benitez

As the 2009 season went into full swing, I wanted a setup man for Cordero as Thompson just wasn't getting it done. Woods was part of the 2008 WS Champion Cardinals, but with lefty Sean Tracey doing well, lefty Jake Woods was trade bait. Benitez is an experienced veteran who still seems to have some gas left in his tank.. at least we hope he has another year.

1B Victor Hicks was not getting it done, batting 0.171 with 1 hr and 5 rbi, so we sent him down and brought up 20yr old fenom, Cody Johnson. Cody was hitting 0.333 with 14 hr and 28 rbi in just 26 games for the Memphis Redbirds.

He will play RF, Pujols back to 1B, and Gomes moves to LF. This kid has unreal minor league stats:

New York, Cleveland, and Los Angeles all lead in the AL.

Atlanta, Cincinnati, and San Diego in the NL.

Trades of note:

Trade between Detroit and Oakland :
Oakland gets :
RF Magglio Ordonez
Detroit gets :
CF Javier Herrera
P Anibal Sanchez

New York (A) gets :
2B Junior Spivey
Washington gets :
1B Gary Sedlak
RF Estee Harris
P Gerald Kittredge

Cincinnati gets :
1B Alex Gordon
C Roger Cazares
SS George Gaier
Kansas City gets :
P Brad Penny

Interesting trade for KC and Cincy. KC bolsters their pitching staff with a bonafide ace, so who did they get in return?

1B Alex Gordon was an all star last year and hit 0.311 with 37 hr and 124 rbi. The other two are minor league fillers.. but KC had a stud 1B in AAA they could now play and Cincy brought up a good pitching prospect to fill Penny's hole.

New York (A) gets :
LF Shannon Stewart
Baltimore gets :
C Orlando Camacho
3B Bill Holmes
SS William Lynn

SP Anthony Reyes went down with a strained rotator cuff and will be out for 4-5 weeks.

1B Albert Pujols was also injured for two weeks.

June ends in an 8-0 butt whoopin by Brad Penny and the KC Royals.

We are 6 games out as July is upon us. We need to stay close until Reyes gets back or we might need to make a deal for some starting pitching.

Chao Wu and Mark Kiger are really doing well so far this year and Chao has dethroned Yadier Molina from the Catcher slot.

Our starting pitching has been a disappointment so far this year and Anthony Reyes can't come back too soon.

Now that was stupid.

With 4 games left until the all star break, I decide I need to replace rookie RF Cody Johnson as he's hitting 0.209 in 51 games started. I look around at the bench players and nothing appeals to me. John Gall is logical, but I shop him around to see what I can get.

Trade with Kansas City :
Kansas City gets :
RF John Gall
We get :
LF James Shanks

Similar players, but Shanks is much better in the field. I make the trade a little too quick as Gall is rated 6/6 for local popularity and is well known around the league. Our fans are not happy at all and our fan interest drops big time.

Oh well, I guess Shanks will have to win them back.

SP Livan Hernandez has been floating around on waivers since 2008 and I decide to take a chance on him as our 5th starter in the rotation. He wasn't doing bad this year, nor did he do bad last year.. and he can be an innings eater.

We are unbeaten with newcomer Shanks in the lineup and are currently on a 6 game winning streak. Livan also pitched a great game in his Cardinal debut - 7 IP, 1 ER, 4 H, 4 K, 3 BB - to improve to 5-3.

Trade with Kansas City :
Kansas City gets :
RF John Gall
We get :
LF James Shanks

Our fans are not happy at all and our fan interest drops big time.

Oh well, I guess Shanks will have to win them back.

BOO!!
