Eh, I wouldn't worry about it too much if I were you. Why trouble yourself with imagining it ... especially since it sucks FAR more than anything you can dream up.

1971 is such a great year. Too bad the poll doesn't reflect many of us cool people.

Just turned 32, but still part of the most voted group - I'm surprised: figured the average would be around 5 years less...

Actually, the average age is a year or two younger than I would have guessed, but then I suppose I should have suspected as much, given the trend in the last year or so towards silliness around here.

I turn 30 in January. I'm no longer even the youngest member of my department.

Guess I'm close to the top (or is it bottom) of this list at 53. Amazing to think that I've been playing these types of sports games since well before most of you -- and maybe even some of your parents -- were born. Heck, I've got three teenage children (oldest of whom is 18 and also plays FOF and other sports sims), have been married for 21 years, and have been a fairly successful antitrust lawyer for 24 years, and, through it all, have continued to play these games.
I began playing sports sims way back around 1965 with a table top game called Research Football, a simple (but fondly remembered) dice game with NFL player cards. It only cost $5 or $6 dollars, but to a young kid buying a game through the mails, it seemed like I was risking a fortune. Moved on to Strat-O-Matic Baseball, and after that at least one sports simulation game from just about every table top manufacturer (some of you might recall, BLM, Nagamco, APBA, SI, Avalon Hill, Turco boxing, etc.). I cannot think of any sports, and very few years where I didn't buy at least one game. I moved to computer games in the late 1980s or early 1990s beginning with Lance Haffner's baseball and hockey games, and a college basketball game that, I think, was called simply "Hoops." As I did with table top games, I later progressed through various manufacturers computer sims in a variety of sports. For what it is worth, my all time favorites are: in table top -- Statis Pro Baseball and a Sports Illustrated game called Pennant Race (probably because it was the first truly general manager oriented simulation I'd found); and in computer games -- FOF 2004. Anyway, thanks for letting me travel down a very long memory lane. |
