Oh, that's right. Their lovely outfield with both Hidalgo and Everett

One of the worst trades in history...TB is still trying to recover.

Melvin Mora for Mike Bordick is getting to that level too...

Though with ESPN, you never have a clue what you are going to get.

Of course the funny part is in ESPN's stat listing of Hoffman, they do have his time as a Marlin. It would be cheap if they considered him with only the Padres, since he was traded as a rookie.

And he was only a Marlin because the Reds didn't protect him in the expansion draft.

I liked him, too. He also had one hell of a porno stash.

Protecting Richard Hidalgo wasn't the problem. Protecting Derek Bell was the problem.

I e-mailed the Astros as soon as that list went public. I was a little drunk (in college at the time) and was a little harsher than necessary. But I wasn't profane.

Anyway, I got a message back from the old [email protected] address that questioned my intelligence in suggesting that protecting Abreu would be wiser than protecting Bell. I made sure to save that message. I replied to it a few years later with the two word message "Good call."

Never got a response to that one.

They might not exactly have been protecting Hidalgo (he might not have been in the bigs yet) but I remember folks saying that Abreu was left unprotected because the Astros felt that Hidalgo had the brighter future.

Fuckers.
