Ursulo seems to be the luckiest horse at Almighty Farms. He has drawn a field of Nationals with ratings in the 60s and 70s, and no powerhouse opponent. He should win.

Hold gets a pretty good draw with all Nationals but no stud again. Most stats are in the 70s, but not too high. As for the handicapping, Hold is carrying 2kg. The rest have from 1 - 5kg extra. We've been burned by him alot in betting, so we go with a place bet, though he should win the race.

Tenor Docteur and Hold get out front with Tenor leading by 1 length down the back straight and Four Favorite is third. Tenor leads Hold by 3/4 in the final curve and leads by 1 over Four at the 500m mark. 400m to go and Kine bolts to the lead on Northern Season with Hold dropping to sixth. 300m more sees Kine still leading but Hold is on the move and the 2 are even at the 200m mark when Harris gives a pop to Hold and he moves to the front, leading by 2 with 100m more to go, Kine holding second. Hold breaks his drought and hangs on to win the race by 1/2 length.

---> Almighty Farms training facilities are closed due to icy conditions.

---> A horse named Elton John rose a level in his (or is it her?) rankings.

---> Update on our horses trying to get to International level:
  • Favorite is at $284k. Form is borderline at 95.7 .
  • Hold is at $225k. Form is borderline at 55.7 .
  • Ursulo is at $280k. His form rose to 68.1 .
---> Fame stays at 83 but we drop a spot to 23rd in the rankings for top stable.

---> Training facilities are back in business after an ice storm closed them down last week.

---> Lodeso has finally recovered from his illness. Unfortunately, his form is 33.6 , so probably he will be out 2 more weeks getting back in race shape.

--->Breeding season is upon us. We will be choosing studs as soon as possible for both Impressive Groomy and Fleur Des Poetes, either from our stock (Ursulo or Hold, though they may be too young?) or the listing of available studs given.

---> Fame stays at 83. We drop another spot to 24th out of 151 stables.

Just kidding, Almighty. Hope you enjoyed Vegas. Now that you have learned so much about horse racing, did you go visit the race and sports book at your casino?

I'm ready to get going again now. Thanks for stopping by (and keeping this dynasty off page 2).

I did stop by the race and sports book area...and was totally confused by all the numbers- a scary thought since I'm a HS math teacher. I was going to bet $100 on Kenny Rogers and the Rangers (only on Rogers' night, of course) and would have won the bet, but I wimped out.

On we go...

P.S.- thanks again to whomever gave Almighty Farms the 5* ratings. Not only is it a boost to the psyche, but it helps to find things when scrolling down the list.

This has got to be one of the worst fields we have ever seen. Countess Girl is the only entry with ratings over 30, and she is only in the 50s. Should be a cakewalk.

Artisanale is out very fast, to put it mildly, and leads by 5 into the first turn. Countess Girl has to be whipped already to catch up and is down by 1 length down the back stretch. Artisanale leads by 1 1/2 with 500m to go and just cruises in from there, winning by about 7 lengths.

Superman leads around the first turn as Ursulo has a terrible start and sits seventh. Superman mantains his lead until the 500m mark where Chateau Magesty takes over by a nose with Ursulo fifth. Miraculously, Chateau Magesty does NOT make another appearance. No real stud is entered. Hold, unfortunately, comes out of post position 14 while Favorite is out of box 2. Of course, that is a matter of how fast a start they get, but we would prefer a lower post # if we had our choice.

Alice Favorite moves out of gate #1 fast and takes the lead while Favorite is slower and drops behind Alice on the rail, pinned there by Savage France while Hold lingers in fifth on the outside. Down the back straight it's still Alice by 1/2 on Savage while Hold moves to third and Favorite is still in deep shit on the rail. 400m from the line, Alice leads Joyeuse Atique by 1/2 as Hold falls back. Joyeuse holds on to win by 3/4 as Hold falters in the final 50m and Favorite could never get out of traffic.

---> Just 2 more weeks until BL and the International crew get there first shot at stardom.

---> Apparently $300k is not the level to go up to Level I International as Ursulo passed the mark. It must be close though. Update on our horses trying to get to International level:

  • Favorite is at $290k. Form is borderline at 83.9 .
  • Hold is at $235k. Form is borderline at 49.0 .
  • Ursulo is at $303k. His form rose to 63.3 .

If it seems like less race call write-up, it is. We are trying to get on with the lesser races so we can get to the funner, more important ones. Hope that doesn't mess with any readers' fun.

Breeding:

With the coming of february, breeding season is upon us and, for the first time, Almighty Farms actually has some work to do. Both our broodmares, Impressive Groomy and Fleur Des Poetes, will be bred at this time.

As usual when doing something for the first time (and often everytime) with this game, one looks in the manual for assistance and finds...none. There is a total of 9 lines in the Reproduction section, which tells me to select a mare, select a stud, click validate and wait 11 months. So helpful.

It would have been nice if there was some way of garnering a bit of information about what kind of match will produce certain traits in the foal or if certain traits are dominant/recessive if coming from the male vs. female... that type of thing.

No such luck. We did, naturally, run several trials. Enough, in fact, to see no apparent correlation at all in any trait, in any way. It appears to be 100% luck, which is unfortunate. We mated our mares to several top studs a number of times and got results that, for example, had a discipline score of from 96.4 to 16.2- from the same pair (both of which had discipline of 65+).

So, with fingers crossed and tealeaves read, we proceed...

Breeding, Part II: The Deed Is Done

We have a choice of using one of our 2 males as stud or going externally.

Almighty Farms choices are Hold and Ursulo.

Externally, there are about 25 horses on the available stud list, ranging in fee from $1,018 to $67,238. Perusing the stats of these horses, we see only 4 worthy challengers for the job, plus our 2, for 6 potential mates:
  1. Hold- no covering fee. Age: 3. Major highpoint: Known quantity in starting statistics. Major drawback: Discipline score is extremely low.
  2. Ursulo- no covering fee. Age: 3. Major highpoint: Known quantity in starting statistics. Major drawback: Discipline score is low.
  3. Western Darkness- covering fee: $67,238. Age: 5. Major highpoint: Highest career gains in the game. Major drawback: Injuries score is low.
  4. Man Loss- covering fee: $45,531. Age: 8. Major highpoint: Excellent all-around ratings and highest discipline. Major drawback: Age.
  5. Harmonie Du conte- covering fee: $56,496. Age: 6. Major highpoint: 2nd highest career gains in the game. Major drawback: Injuries rating is very low.
  6. Courageous- covering fee: $48,543. Age: 5. Major highpoint: Not much we can see. Major drawback: Low injuries stat.
So, Almighty Farms studs have low discipline while the external studs have low injuries and are older. The reason we look at age is that these animals have run, according to the game, about 35 races. If a horse is, for example, 6 and has run 35 races, thats only 9/year. That leaves alot of time they could have trained, so we don't know how low their beggining ratings may have been.

With this in mind, we have chosen to breed both our mares, Impressive Groomy and Fleur Des Poetes, to our own stud, Ursulo. We feel that since we know exactly what stats Ursulo came into the world with, and given the fact we can find no pattern to go by, he is our best hope for a lucky/ schollarly choice.

Anyway, it is done now, and as it takes 11 months to find out if we did, in fact, get 1 or 2 or 0 good foals/colts (whichever), there is no turning back. Just a fingers crossed kind of a deal.

As far as naming the eventual younsters, well, unfortunately, the game makes you name them at conception, not at birth, so the 2 have been named already, also. They were named for the 2 FOFC members who have the most posts in the Almighty Farms 1,2 and 3 threads. A la FrogMan, I actually have an excel spreadsheet to track these posts so I know who is next in line for naming rights to our babes.

Be back in 11 months to give birthing details...

Game Notes: Jockey Salary

Just a note, if anyone pays close attention and wonders, the salary listed for a jockey for any particular race is the base salary they ask at all times. The actual salary we have to pay is increased by a fee or retainer (whatever you want to call it) based on, we suppose, the amount of the purse for the race.

For instance, you will see horses entered in a race later today (hopefully) with a purse of $1,800,000. The jockey salary may say about $2,300. The actual fee is more like $7,500, but I often forget to put it because it is not listed, but added when you approve, so I always put in the base salary asked.

Game Notes: Total Money Won

Another problem with the game is that it doesn't handle the cumulative prize money won, either by a single horse or a stable, properly. The columns for Total Gains and Yearly Gains are, in fact, different, but they don't make any sense.

For example, BL has not run a race yet this year but has year-to-date gains of $200k or whatever and total gains of $300k+. Likewise, the totals are not separated correctly in the gains for stables year-to-date, as Almighty Farms has won only a few $100k for the year, but it says $2 million+.

We will continue to publish the numbers when the game tells us stuff, but we cannot vouch for the accuracy of these notes, unfortunately.

you have some sort of higher power to have enough patience to continue this game....i am in awe of your ability to keep at it

(i was convinced this dynasty was doomed at the get go)

do you have to deal with constant crashes ? the game not only runs the same horses race after race but also crashes for me. i have never been able to get past this and just move on to something else

although i swear there is a good game in that mess somewhere i just can't seem to find it

condors, by luck or whatever, I have never had the game crash on me (knock on the proverbial wood).

As for the patience, I'd say it was more of a desire to see how things go, in terms of BL and her cohorts, in the Triple Crown and big money races, as well as how breeding works out. I am just, I suppose, still curious to see what happens.

When one does a nonparticipatory dynasty, there aren't a lot of people that post in it, and the post/view ratio sucks, so not that many even look in. You have to have some other reason to keep at it. I guess curiosity is mine.

Thanks for reading.

With her 95.9 discipline score, Artisanale can run several weeks in a row when available and be very competitive, especially at this level.

All entries are Level III except Artisanale and Zanzara Joy. Zanzara is a mystery as she was one of the good ones our first group went up against, yet here she is still Listed as a 3 year old. We must assume she was injured or sick for a very long time as her stats are all 80s, but with her 98.8 discipline, she should be the best horse around. As for handicaps, they range from 2-9kg added, with 0kg for Zanzara and Artisanale.

Zanzara takes the early lead by a neck over Artisanale with Tedynia Des Pricon 2 1/2 back. Artisanale takes the lead in the back straight and maintains a small lead until the 400m mark, when Escude decides it's time to move out and gives her a shot to the flanks. Off she goes and wins by 2 lengths over Zanzara.

Game Notes: Another Screwed Up Thing

Never really noticed, or looked, before, but we saw in this last race of Artisanale that 8 of the entries were actually OVER the alloted total gains interval to qualify for the race. In other words, they should have been to good to run, but the game let them in the race, anyway.

One more thing to overcome in a race.

Game Notes: Yeah, Another One

Getting close to the first big International race, we finally looked at it to enter our horses. Guess what, all these International races are for horses 3 years old and HIGHER. In other words, the International races, including the Triple Crown, are open to all older horses, not just 3 year olds.

In our first one soon, there are horses up to 10 years old running, which will give them a huge advantage as far as years of training. Damn.

---> We got tired at having to see the "lack of staff in assistants" every week so, since money is not a problem anytime this century, we went ahead and hired one:

  • Willie Veltroni, with organization 5, morale 52 and salary $346/week
---> Artisanale Pour L'Honneur (her full name) has moved to Level III due to her latest race gains.

---> This week is all steeplechases, so we get a breather and some needed conditioning/training.

---> Fame is 83 for the something or other week in a row, but we move back up into a tie for 23rd in the stable rankings.

---> Yea, baby, it's finally here. Let's do this.

---> Our planning dots, the way the game allows the owner of the stable some extra input, are now at 0. We are now at the point where it's all up to our staff to take care of all Almighty Farms operations.

---> Guess what? Fame is at 83. Rank is still tied for 23rd.

Those 10 yr. olds have no chance against BL. She will leave them all behind.

Big week, for the understatement of the year. I am now going to postulate that $303,600 is the amount needed to get to Level 1 International, so that's why Ursulo has $303k and isn't quite there.

I have a theory on the yearly $$ thing.

It may be that if it is, for example, March '04, that the game uses the time period from March '03 to March '04 as the year, instead of starting a new set of books at the end of year one they keep a rolling monthly total.

Just a theory.

Gents, that is an excellent theory. Thanks for thinking more clearly than I (even if it's wrong, and I don't think it is, it makes perfect sense the way this game is done).

This race has all National level horses. Stats are in the 60s and 70s, with some high 70s mixed in here and there. Hold is an enigma, almost always the top horse, statistically, in his races but, almost always once more, failing to live up to his billing. There comes a time, after lots of races, where we have to say Hold isn't just unlucky in post draws or whatever, but has some flaw to him.

Wall Street Bandit leaves the gate quickly and takes first with Hold a poor starting sixth. On the back straight, Order Race is in front of Wall Street by 1/2 with Hold fifth. 500m from the finish, Order leads Quick Honor by 1/2 as Hold falters. Just like the last race, this one is full of Level III Nationals with ratings in the 60s and 70s. Wall Street Bandit gets to run again, refreshed by his 15 minute rest, no doubt. Ursulo gets post position 9 while Favorite is unlucky to get the end of the row, #12.
