I would consider both Phoenix and Caulkin child actors.

Have you seen River Phoenix in "My own private idaho" ? That's not what I call a child actor.

Macaulay Culkin...that's pretty funny.

Aside from River Phoenix and a small handful of other folks, the pool for kid actors is pretty thin. And we've got twelve drafters.

I'd like to get started tomorrow.

How about a duel category for musical/child actor/actresses?

I understand, but you could make the arguement that he is best remembered (at least in some eyes) as that tough kid in Stand By Me. If the child actor category is going to cause any sort of contreversy then I guess we should elinimate it. Bah

Oh and about the child actor, I do think it's a bad idea since the draft pool is tiny (well at least when looking for good ones) can't think of more than 4-5 who would be decent in the list and the teams choosing them would become immediate contenders.

BTW : would Kirsten Dunst fit into the list ?

I disagree. The Child Actor category is one of the true tests of the true film buff. Will you waste an early pick to get a guarunteed winner, or do you have faith in your ability to find the rare gem and not get stuck with one of the Spy Kids?

LAST PICK? That's it, I quit.

At least this means I get back-to-back picks. Ben Afleck & Jennifer Lopez = dynamic duo.

LOL. I'd almost prefer your slot to mine. I'll get a "blue chip" at 1.2, but then it's the Bataan Death March until my next pick.

First pick. FIRST PICK ?!?

No pressure or anything. Yikes.

After reading the videogame charcacter draft debacle and waiting for GoldenScribeGuy's scathing comments, I'm not sure the first pick is a good thing.

Pick number one will be up shortly.

With the #1 pick in the AllTime Film Actors/Actresss draft is.....Actor (drama) - Corey Feldman.....not!

The actual pick is Director - Alfred Hitchcock.

A solid choice for #1. I don't think he would have been my #1 (and possibly not even my #1 director) but a good start to this draft I think.

Rear Window, Psycho, Vertigo, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Strangers on a Train etc.

I figure, with that resume and the fact that he is one of the most copied directors out there (Brian DePalma has made a career out of mimicing Hitchcock.), he made a solid choice a #1.

Plus, I can only think of a handful of possible directors I would pick, but have a long list in all the other categories.

Nice pick, Splits. It sets an early tone for the draft.

I really hate drafting this high (I know, cry me a river), but it sort of forces my hand. I have to close my eyes and pull the trigger on the actor who is considered by many to be the best ever. At the very least, he set the bar for all who follow.

Actor/Drama: Jimmy Stewart

NoMyths is on the clock.

Jimmy Stewart. Are you kidding me? Over Corey Feldman, What's wrong with you. You must be some kind of fool for picking him.

Sorry, just read most of the videogame character thread and I needed to vent.

Solid pick Coug. Definately in my top 3 for actors. There is a slim chance that my other actors will fall to the end of round 2. A very slim chance.

CW's Not As Scathing As GSG, But Still Possibly Brutal, Draft Analysis

1.1 - Alfred Hitchcock, SP
No arguments here. A truly legendary director, worthy of the #1 overall pick. A

1.2 Jimmy Stewart, WSUCougar
It's certainly not a bad pick. Not one I would have gone for, but JS is certainly a quality guy to have on your roster. Personally though, I think putting Stewart as the top actor of the draft is a smidge much. B-

1.3 - Jack Nicholson, NoMyths
My personal list of top 5 acting talent included good old Jack. He's a beast, and I have no problems with him going this early. A

1.4 - Katharine Hepburn, 3ric
Great actress, way too damn early to take her off the board. I would have bet money she'd be available to 3ric in the 2nd. On the plus side, she will likely be one of the best choices among the Actresses, but still. Way too friggen early to take her off the board. C

1.5 - Bing Crosby, oykib
Sorry man, but no. Fifth overall selection, and you went with an obscure great. Don't get me wrong, Crosby is above and beyond the top man for his category, but this is far too early to be taking him.D+

1.6 - Stanley Kubrik, Calis
50/50 on this one. Good director, probably among the top 5 I'd have listed. However, there are at least 2 directors still out there I'd choose over Kubrik.
Solid, but not excellent pick. B+

1.7

1.8 - Charlie Chaplin, Sloan
Hmm. For some reason, I just can't get excited about this pick. Don't get me wrong, CC is a very solid choice, but for director slot? I just...don't know. There are better directors out there. Chap is better suited for the Comedy role, as the throwback legend. B-

1.9 - Al Pacino, Shorty
I've been waiting for him to go for a few picks now. When I was kicking back thinking of actors I'd want, he was among the top of my picks. There is, however, one particular actor in the same slot who I'd take before Pacino, which is why I have to drop the grade slightly. Good pick, though. A-

1.10 - Robert Deniro, Barkeep
As much as I like Deniro, I don't think I'd take him right now. Not hugely overrated, but still, I think better value could have been had. A servicable pick, rather than a power pick. B

1.11 - Billy Wilder, ntndeacon
Top notch credentials, and bonus points for a pick I didn't expect (that still deserves going in round 1). I'm still looking for one, possibly two huge directors to go, and am very surprised neither of them have been taken, especially with this many directors being snagged. Matter of taste perhaps, but I feel there's a brighter star to be snapped up.B-

Well, well, well. Finally.

The perfect thread for someone with my expertise and exquisite taste.

GSGs analysis through Round 1 – Pick 10.

1.1 Alfred Hitchcock – Director (SplitPersonality1)
Hitchcock as #1 overall pick? A bit of a reach I think. Don’t get me wrong, he was a great director and was quite influential. However there are a couple of other directors that rank right up there. Also, if you can only think of a “handful” of directors, then you probably have no business being in this draft.

Also, the Corey Feldman bit wasn’t funny when 3ric mentioned him in post #79. Leave the humor to the professionals boys. Don’t quit your day jobs.

1.2 Jimmy Stewart – Best Actor – drama (WSUCougar)
Of all the thousands of dramatic actors that have been in film, you pick Jimmy Stewart. Hmmmm. You do realize that every comedian and impressionist in the last 50 years has mimicked his voice, right? Even Carrottop has done Jimmy Stewart. *shudder*.

He was a great actor of course, (he would make my top ten list), but maybe a bit of a stretch this early in the draft.

1.3 Jack Nicholson – Best Actor: Drama (NoMyths)
Where do I start……Whenever I get into a discussion with other people regarding the talents of modern Hollywood actors and actresses, I always get into a screaming match regarding the abilities of one guy..…you guessed it. Jack Nicholson. In my opinion, he is ......

Moderately over-rated!!!! (before I get slammed too hard, notice I did not say ‘highly’ overrated.)

He is a good actor. That’s it. Just good. He has been exceptional in a handful of roles, and has just gone through the motions in many more. Examples.

Jack Nicholson in “Cuckoo’s Nest” was simply amazing.
Jack Nicholson in “Batman” was simply average.
Jack Nicholson in “The Shining” was the highlight of the film (overrated film BTW)
Jack Nicholson in “The Witches of Eastwick” was dreadful. – granted, he didn’t have much to work with.
Jack Nicholson is “As Good As it Gets” was….well, I really didn’t care for the movie, so let’s just say I was less than impressed.

Nicholson is a good comedic actor, but not on my top ten. He is a good dramatic actor, but not on my top ten. I think that he is just too darned inconsistent to deserve the #3 pick overall. In a nutshell, I think you blew it NoMyths.

1.4 Katherine Hepburn – Best Actress: Romance (3ric)
I absolutely love Katherine Hepburn on film. She was an amazing talent, starring in more than 50 films spanning eight decades. Although I have not seen all of her movies, I can safely say that I have never seen her do poorly in a film. (Checking IMDB, I’ve seen more than twenty of them. Good grief, I think I need to get out more.)

However.

Best Actress: Romance ???

“The African Queen” could be considered a romance, I guess; and “The Rainmaker” definitely falls into that category. But, I guess, I tend to remember her for roles like Eleanor of Aquitaine in “Lion in Winter” and other dramatic roles in movies like “On Golden Pond” and “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner”.

I am agreeing with WSUCougar here. IMO, it’s a great pick; wrong category.

1.5 Bing Crosby – Musical (oykib)
[Question for Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon fans: Alfred Hitchcock to Bing Crosby]

I hate to disappoint Coffee Warlord in my role as an evil, mean, scathing critic, but I think this is an inspired pick. When I saw that the Musical category was going to be included, Bing’s name was the first that came to mind. In fact, without a lot of thought, it was the only name that came to my head.

The analogy to shortstops in baseball is quite apt. There are many good actor/actresses who have starred in musicals; but only one great one. I am curious to see what other names will get thrown out in this category.

Would I have picked him #5 overall? Probably not, but I really do like this selection.

[Answer: One Degree. Bing Crosby was an uncredited voice in the Alfred Hitchcock film “Rear Window”]

1.6 Stanley Kubrick – Director (Calis)
Personally, I think Kubrick is a very hit or miss director. For every “2001: A Space Odyssey” and “Full Metal Jacket” there is an “Eyes Wide Shut” and a “Killer’s Kiss”.

What, never heard of “Killer’s Kiss”. Here is the promotional tagline from this 1955 piece of craptaculousness.

“Her Soft Mouth Was the Road to Sin-Smeared Violence!”

Aargh. I’ve seen this film. It was very painful to watch. Film-noir at it’s worst.

Despite the comments above, I do think Kubrick was a very talented director. I just think that his “vision” didn’t always mesh with the rest of us. (In other words, I think he was a nut job. A very, very talented nutjob).

Is he in my top ten list of directors. Yes. Second-best overall. No. Should he have gone 6th in the draft. Heck no.

1.7 Harrison Ford – Actor: Action (Karim)
Harrison Ford is one of those guys that is comfortable in just about any setting. He excels as an action hero (Indiana Jones & Hans Solo) and does very well in dramas (“Witness”, “Clear & Present Danger” etc.). Personally, I think he was amazing in “Frantic”, and was the best thing about “Air Force One”. However, he needs to stay away from Romances. “Working Girl”, “Sabrina” and “Six Days & Seven Nights” were not very good.

Although a versatile actor, I do think he is at his best in action films. His turn as Richard Kimble in “The Fugitive” was excellent.

IMO, Harrison Ford is a decent pick in this category. He would not have been my first choice, and definitely not #7 overall, but I have him in my top ten for action heroes.

1.8 Charlie Chaplin – Director (Sloan)
I really want to like this pick. You are correct in every thing you say about Chaplin. He was an amazing individual that excelled in multiple areas. This pick shows me that you know your stuff when it comes to film history. However, you said it yourself:
Quote:

Which is why, you should have chosen him in the Actor: Comedy slot.

To use another baseball analogy; Babe Ruth was an excellent pitcher. He had a high win percentage and won a couple of World Series games. Some argue that he may have gotten into the Hall of Fame based on pitching alone. (debatable, but I digress). However, when stacked up against all-time pitchers, he is maybe top-100. Maybe. As a hitter of course, he is simply one of the best of all-time.

Charlie Chaplin as a comedic actor is easily a top 5 pick. As a director, while good, I think he gets a bit lost in the crowd.

[edit] Chaplin has been moved to the Actor: Comedy slot

Good move. Chaplin is easily a top 5 guy in this category. A true comedic genius is his or any other era.

1.9 Al Pacino –Actor: Drama (Shorty3281)
1972 - “The Godfather”, 1973 - “Serpico”, 1974 - “The Godfather – pt 2”, 1975 - “Dog Day Afternoon. Wow. Four years, four movies, four outstanding performances. His performance in “…And Justice For All” was as good as the previous films, but I don’t think he ever achieved that level of quality again and that was in 1979. He is still riding the wave from these movies and rightfully so.

Don’t get me wrong; he was very good in “Scarface”, “Carlito’s Way”, “Donnie Brasco” & “Heat”, but he has had a few misses along the way as well. (“Author, Author”, “The Devil’s Advocate” etc. What was his agent thinking?) In all fairness, the “misses” were more the fault of a bad script than Pacino’s acting ability.

Overall, a solid pick. There are a couple of actors that I would have picked ahead of him, but it is just a personal preference kind of thing; not a slam on this pick.

1.10 Robert DeNiro - Actor: Drama (Barkeep49)
I see a lot of parallels between Pacino & DeNiro.

Like Pacino, he had an amazing run of films in the seventies; “Mean Streets”, “Godfather – pt 2”, “Taxi Driver”, “Deer Hunter” & “Raging Bull”. And like Pacino, I think his performances in the last 20 years or so are not as good. Again, not bad, just not at the same stellar level. His role as Jake LaMotta in “Raging Bull” was simply awesome and I don’t think he will ever top it.

*Editorial side-comment: I don’t really know what to think of his recent roles in comedies. On the one hand, it is interesting and quite funny to see DeNiro in a comedy. On the other hand, he seems to be doing two-dimensional versions of his dramatic characters. It’s nice to see this other side of Robert DeNiro, but I hope that he sticks to drama, it is what he does best.*

You should be very familiar with these next sentences: Overall, a solid pick. There are a couple of actors that I would have picked ahead of him, but it is just a personal preference kind of thing; not a slam on this pick.

1.11 Billy Wilder – Director (Ntndeacon)
analysis to come

1.12 John Wayne – Actor: Action (Sun Tzu)

Boy, tough call between my top two choices. In the end, though, I have to go with the guy who made what I consider to be one of the handful of best films ever...so with the 3rd pick in the draft (for Actor (Drama)), I select: Jack Nicholson.

Forget the mugging of late. For Five Easy Pieces alone he should be cast in miniature bronze and distributed to schoolchildren. Throw in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Easy Rider, Chinatown, The Shining...and then consider that all of those films were made in an eleven year period. With fairly distinct early, middle, and late periods, Jack has been a complete actor, with the dramatic chops to pull off a Robert Dupea and the comedic timing to pull off a Melvin Udall. From sinister to heartbreaking, Nicholson is my choice to head up my filmmaking team.

How many rounds are we going? I.e. are we going to choose more than one person for each category (as I tend to think we should)?

Solid pick. As an aside, I thought his portrayals of The Joker in Batman and Colonel Jessup in A Few Good Men were great supporting roles.

I had only intended 10 rounds.

I would think we would only be picking one from each category.
