Playoffs quarterfinals

Today we have four exciting matchups:
#3 Wisconsin (12-1) vs #5 Tulane (12-0)(-2)
Lonnie Abrams leads the Badgers' #2-ranked rushing attack with 1496 yds to counter the aerial attack of the Green Wave, who has two QBs, Rob Kelly (out with a broken jaw) and Nicky Pride, who has combined for 4397 yds passing and 50 TDs. Edge: Wisconsin.

#4 UCLA (12-0)(-6) vs #7 Air Force (11-2)
The Bruins has the top pass defense in the nation and has a very competent RB in Johnnie Crassweller who has run for 1388 yds and 21 TDs. The Falcons, with their Wing-T formation, boast with the top running offense in the nation and two (2) 1000-yd rushers, led by the 1671 yds gained by Phil Maher. Edge: Air Force.

#1 Boston College (12-0)(-6) vs #16 South Florida (11-2)
One of the top defenses in the nation belongs to the BC Eagles who has a deep team with no apparent weaknesses on either side of the ball. The UCF Bulls have a nice balance on offense but doesn't seem to have the defensive strength neccessary. Edge: Boston College.

and the one we all been waiting for:

#12 Indiana (11-1) vs #2 Vanderbilt (13-0)(-6) on TV3.

The Commodores has the #2 passing offense and the #2 rushing defense, but that plays to our strength: the passing combo of Bertram and Vallery and the 5th-ranked pass defense. Our course, it could be a long day if we can't pressure their QB Charlie Whitfield, who has 4303 yds and 43 TDs.

Vandy receives the ball on the opening kickoff and returns it to their 37, and goes down to our 34 before Toombs sacks Whitfield to set up a 3rd and 14. Dorrough defends the pass on 4th down and they kick a FG to go ahead 0-3. We gain a first down but stalls after a sack. Vandy moves quickly with medium-length passes and scores after a 3-minute drive on a 22-yd TD pass to Reed. 0-10, Commodores, at 5:13 in the first quarter. It's raining today, and the slippery ball escapes Kaplan's hands for a fumble, and Vandy recovers on our 27. They turn the ball over on downs, however, as Bergmann stopped their receiver a yard short on 4th down. Vallery starts to get a rhythm in his passes, and moves the chains while spreading the ball around - to about five or six different receivers already. Then he sees a break in coverage and lets go deep towards Bertram - but it's a little off and is intercepted by Vanderbilt's Corbett, who returns the ball - 75 yds for a touchdown! 0-17, Vanderbilt!

They kick a FG on their next drive for 0-20 at 10:57 in the 2nd quarter. Crane gets a 43-yd return on the kickoff and we get some hope as Vallery completes a 17-yd pass to Kaplan, moving past midfield. Seven plays later, we get six points as Vallery completes a 7-yd pass to Rhodes! 7-20. Three minutes before halftime we get a big play from the defense, a fumble is forced, and recovered by Crane on the Vandy 32-yd line. Unfortunately, we didn't gain any ground and Cash missed the 45-yd FG attempt. The Commodores squeeze in an additional FG with 27 seconds to spare in the first half. 7-23. At halftime, we have 9 first downs, 10 rushing yds and 141 passing yds while our opponents has 11 first downs, 12 rushing yds and 157 passing yds. Statistically close, in other words, but Vandy has had all the lucky breaks so far.

Bertram gains 39 yds on the kickoff to open the second half, but we don't get anywhere and punt. On their first play, Whitfield completes a 61-yd TD pass to Sherman and we're down 7-30. Vallery goes in, determined to do something, and finds Rhodes for 37 yds. Confidently, he takes a second snap and drills a 26-yd TD pass, to Rhodes, again. 14-30, Vandy, at 11:53 in the 3rd quarter. Vandy goes for 3 downs and a punt as Horoszowski personally wrecked all three snaps. Vallery once again comes out smoking and completes three straight passes before the fourth goes awry and is intercepted in the end zone. The Commodores seems to establish a running offense to control the clock - but fails as we stop them rather quickly. A short punt is fielded at our 46 - and Vallery goes deep for Bertram, and gains 45 yds on the play. 1st down on their 9-yd line. RB Eugene England runs in for the score, and we're only eight points down, 22-30 at 4:31 in the 3rd quarter.

Vandy gets some offense going and finishes a 10-play, 81-yd drive with a 5-yd TD pass for 22-37. At 11:50 in the fourth another Vallery pass is picked off and returned for a score, which set us back even further, 22-44. Field goal, Commodores. 22-47. Our chances are slipping away. Final score: 22-50.

1Q: 10:56 VAND - Lester Reilly 38 field goal.
1Q: 05:13 VAND - Richie Reed 22 pass from Charlie Whitfield.
2Q: 14:10 VAND - Billy Corbett 75 interception return.

Playoff final

#3 Wisconsin (14-1) vs #1 Vanderbilt (15-0)(-3)

UW won in 2034, 2036 and 2038, Vanderbilt won in 2037.

UW's QB Brady has the second highest rating with 182.3, Vanderbilt's Whitfield is 5th with 169.9. UW's Abrams is fifth in rushing with 109.2 yds/game, and Vanderbilt's Andersen is 3rd in receiving yardage. The Badgers' CB Vickers leads the nation in interceptions with 12, with 201 return yards and 3 scores.

UW's Brady passed for 303 yds, 3 TDs, 2 ints.
Vanderbilt's Lynn passed for 346 yds, 3 TDs, 1 int. His WR, Reed, caught 10 passes for 183 yds and 3 TDs.
Final result: Vanderbilt 46, Wisconsin 44.

In the Heisman voting, I gladly cast vote for the WR from the Indiana Hoosiers, Herb Bertram! He was behind a QB from Army at first, but got a whole slew of votes toward the end, and got a total of 113 votes, two more than Nicky Hagen, Army. Congratulations!

No surprise for the Vandy loss ! They have always been a strong team in TCY. And seeing them beat Wisconsin for the National title is another "confirmation" (is that proper US english ?).

But great, great year by WR Herb Bertram !!!

He was contacted on Week 3 of season 2036 by 3ric. Visited us in Week 8. But committed only on week 15... A great 3ric recruit !
-----
WR Herb Bertram, Bryant, AR, #229 (#16 WR), 86+, 12 ath prep. Fit score 89.
$$Bertram, Herb 86+ 4 3 Acad*/Dist Committed *
$$Bertram, Herb WR 6-2 174 AR 229 16 1 1
$$Bertram, Herb WR 6-2 174 AR 229 Bryant
-----
He was then redshirted by me at the start of the 2037 season (I was already very excited about this prospect => you can check the 2037 report where we also lost to Vandy in the semis while they went to win it all).
-----
At the start of 2038, Herb Bertram requested more free time for playing Quake 6 on their Pentium8-equipped VR handhelds. (Hey, it's the future!). We said, no way, you gotta focus on playing some damn good football ! He was already slotted as our top receiver in his first football season.
In his first game ever for us, he posted 7 recs for 178 yards and 3 TDs. Being the target of our super stud QB Vallery helped him a lot too of course. His first season stats : 57 recs, 1116 yards, 13 TDs. Breaking a team yardage record for a single season. He was also Big 10 first teamer.
Here was comment at the time : "If he stays healthy, he'll break every IU receiving record left."
------
In 2039, Bertram was sidelined several weeks due to a stretched knee ligament. He finished with only 399 yards and 4 TDs on only 22 catches.
------
In 2040, well, 3ric told you the story. He broke tons of records helping us move deep into the playoffs while also winning our first ever Heisman Trophy !

The 1709 yds receving is not only a new Big 10 season record, but it got into as #19 on the top 20 all-time season yardage by a WR.

His career passing rating was 158.5, with a 166.4 rating in 2038.

Well, maybe....

Outstanding season, 3ric. Can we get a summary of the final recruiting results? That seems to have been a weakness lately. For a team that finishes ranked almost every year, it seems like we should be hauling in some blue chips more frequently than we do, or is it just me?
