I don't hate him (although he sweats like a pig on stage), I just think he was taken way way too high, ie. Andre Ware Edit: Also, his best work has been in movies especially in non-comedy roles. Last edited by Ramzavail : 01-04-2006 at 02:50 PM. |

Carlin was an obvious choice, but to me he fits into a category of comedians -- Richard Pryor is in that group to, along with two others I expect to be selected at some point -- that rely too much on shock value and breaking tabboos for the humor. I'll admit I favor comedians who work a bit cleaner, although I'm sure I'll end up with one or two comedians who know how to drop a good f-bomb. |

Although I can see where you're coming from, I think the majority of people know him from his sitcom. I, for one, don't find his stand-up nearly as funny as his show. We'll see how it works out. I have a lot of stand-up guys in mind.

I'm a huge Seinfeld fan both sitcom and standup, so I'm bias, but lets be honest, he's great pick no matter where you pick him however you only get one sitcom pick (I think thats right) and he's the Babe Ruth of the field.
Edit: Wishes he was in this draft now Last edited by Ramzavail : 01-04-2006 at 03:00 PM. |

With three picks to go, I feel really good about who is left on the board.

The commissioner will soon be stepping to the podium to announce our first trade.
kcchief is sending his first round pick and 10th round to Maple Leafs for his second round pick and sixth round pick. Discuss. |

That's what I was thinking, and why I had him #1 on my board for sitcom actor. He's much more valuable there than in stand up. There are lots of great stand up comedians to choose from, but the crowd is thin for truely great sitcom stars. |

Hicks was taken too early. No doubt that he was funny enough to be a first-rounder, but he would probably still be on the board in the second or third round.. Just my 2 cents.....

eh - I think Cheers was better than Seinfeld, so I would have gone bold with Ted Danson in round 2 or 3 as my sitcom pick.

I agree, I mean pshh, I've never even heard him on XM Comedy. Great trade for MapleLeaf, I just hope he's looking at who I am thinking about and then, he's the steal of the draft. Last edited by Ramzavail : 01-04-2006 at 03:17 PM. |

Yeah--there were two guys who could have gone #1, IMO, and one of them is still on the board.

I'm not sure I have a good enough feel for this draft to know whether moving up is a good choice. It's very possible I just traded up to get a guy who would have been there for me in the second round. That said, I'm a believer in value-based drafting.
While there are some big names still available who would make excellent choices, I think there's only category in this draft that has a clear-cut, no-questions-asked leader. Ask a comedian for the name of the greatest standup performer or sitcom actor ever and they'll argue all night. But in this category, there's no debate. With pick 1.7, the Maple Leafs take talkshow host Johnny Carson.

I would have no problem taking Robin Williams at 2 as a stand-up as well. I almost went for another person, but I never really got into him. I've decided that this is all going to be my personal preference, and damn the masses!

Hope is a very good pick.
Chaplin... wow, he never even occurred to me, but it's a very strong pick. "Inspired" is actually a good description, agreed here. As we hit the end of the day, remember to send in advance picks. I don't pick again until round three, so I'm a good person to send your picks to -- I can't steal them for a while yet.

Thanks for the kind words about Chaplin. I was amazed that he fell to #9. I would have probably taken him at #1 overall.

I think it's more about recognition as opposed to actually being funny. I've watched a few of his films on AMC, and they really weren't that funny. They were probably hilarious back 80 years ago, but I don't think they've aged well.

Johnny Carson was my clear #1 had I been in this because of how far above everyone else he is. Charlie Chaplin was on my board as a sleeper. My #1 standup is still out there though. I was hoping he'd slip to round 2 ro 3, so I'll be interested to see when he gets taken.

Okay, with pick 1.10 I will take Bill Cosby (standup).
He could fit in at a number of spots, notably at the sitcom or movie position, but his best work has been in clean standup. He will anchor the team. |

As good as Carson is. There is at least one other in that category that is in the same league. That person will be a good value for someone.

Alright, this is tough since I do not have another pick for 18 more spots and I have my eye on three people, but with pick 2.1 I will take Rodney Dangerfield (standup).
Legendary standup comedian with a few notable movie roles. He gets some respect here. (edited to bold the pick) Last edited by Swaggs : 01-04-2006 at 05:03 PM. |

I think Cosby in standup is huge mistake. He is a sitcom pioneer and as good as his standup is, he is a clossal in that field. In terms of relative worth, as much as I love his standup (own all standup that's on CD) I would have slotted him in sitcom.
