The thing I have learned about this game is that you have to be able to check in at least 3-4 times a day or you find yourself in trouble quickly. That is what killed me. I committed to a path that led to stronger winds farther south, and then couldn't get online for about 24 hrs. I think my boat was stalled for 12 to 16 of those. I missed the window of wind and have been fighting to catch up ever since.
It will be disappointing not to be able to finish this leg before the deadline. |

with only a few hours until leg 1 is shut off, chesapeake has made a heck of a comeback and our boats are now neck and neck. He was some 200km behind me at some point but he's now only 7 km behind...
Leg 1 closes at 4pm eastern no matter where you are and leg 2 will start off from Cape Town with your boat on autopilot on Saturday at 7am eastern. FM

Somehow I managed to stay right on the edge of the stronger winds and work more directly towards Cape Town while you had to angle south in weaker winds. Just like in real sailing, the wind gods hold your fate in their puckish little hands.

well said. I have put a tiny bit of distance between, but I'm going toward weaker winds, again... Been a fun game so far, probably enhanced by the fact that there's a group of 6-7 people playing it here at work on the Volvo Employee version, people who usually never play this kind of thing so they're all super enthusiastic. Hoped to make the Top-20000 but will be a few miles short.
Whats the strategy for the second stage? The real boats will go south to catch the strong winds. |

Darn you! You're stealing my wind! I feel like a NASCAR driver on the last lap who can see the checkered flag, but he's stuck behind someone he just can't get around. |

I can't catch him, though. We're going the same speed and the clock runs out shortly. Sucks to be me!

you wanna see a case of "sucks to be me"? take a look at the first attached pic, from the Volvo Employee game. My boat is one at the bottom, pink trail. The top one is another fellow, whom I added as a friend a little while ago, and that I was also leading by some distance at some point. He is now leading me by about 1.5km. Our distance to finish are off by 2 km but the distance between me and him is marked as 1km, so I assume it's 1.5 km. We were going in the exact same wind, going the exact same speed. As you can see in the zoomed out pict, we're a bit below Cape Town in latitude so I just changed my direction to go a tiny bit more to the North in hope that I'll be able to get closer to Capte Town that way, who knows. I'm now going at 32.8 km/h while he's going at 34.7. FM

I've gone back to the straighter, faster course. We shall see...

Is there any way to change the colors of your boat at this point?

nope, it's not possible anymore...
Ended up unable to catch him by surprise in any way, finished the leg 1km behind him. FM

I decided to give it another go. We'll see if I remember to check on it.

God damn!
Note to self: Do NOT go toward the spots where the wind is swirling and then suddenly stops. Man, oh, man. I was running so well, even almost catching up to Frogman, and then I just suddenly died. I have lost over 10,000 spots in like 2 days now. Sad A learning process for sure

LOL! Been there, done that, in the Vendée Globe. Last Thursday, as I was cruising in 147th place out of abotu 100,000, I came to see some sort of whirlwind type thing ahead of me. Didn't see it far enough in advance and even though I tried to avoid it, it swallowed me. Three days later, I was down to 20,000th. Gah...
Going well in both Volvo races. I'm 157th out of 2500 in the employee only race and have been slowly working my way up in the non-employee race. Kinda fun... FM
