Florida? Tallahasse and Tampa? If we're only counting LEGAL citizens them Miami shouldn't count.

California isn't necessarily out of it. Long Beach is big enough to possibly rival San Francisco, San Diego and Sacramento in population. You just wouldn't know it because it's trapped in the metropolis surrounding the #1 city.

I'm fairly certain that Wyoming with Casper and Cheyenne is a correct answer.
Alabama, I'm fairly certain that Birmingham would be a top city, striking that. I'm not for sure about Iowa, but Des Moines would be one, and I'm pretty sure that Davenport very well could be one. |

If you want to use the 2000 census as the standard, it's fine by me. I was just offering up the most recent numbers.
I'm pretty sure the puzzle was made using the 2000 number anyway. |

I'm guessing the last few may end up being those small New England states with smallish "biggest" cities. The only one I'll hazard a guess at is Rhode Island: Providence and Pawtucket?

According to something I found in the back of a tourist guide book for the South, the second largest population in Georgia is Columbus with 178k, then Savannah with 149k, then Augusta in 4th with 71k. This is 1990 figures, but Augusta must've got awfully big awfully quickly to be second now.
(n.b. I also found another state that had 1st and 2nd with the same letter in 1990, but since it's from a book, that's cheating so I'm not telling) (dola n.b. looking back Fritz has already mentioned the state as being in, but it's not on the final list so far) |

Virginia, no. Chesapeake City and Norfolk come before Richmond and Poanoke.
And South Carolina...looking back through the thread I forgot to add it the list (we determined before it was.) My bad. Washington - Seattle & Spokane Wyoming - Cheyenne & Casper Kentucky - Lexington & Louisville Wisconsin - Milwaukee & Madison Ohio - Cleveland & Columbus Pennsylvania - Philadelphia & Pittsburgh Geogia - Atlanta & Augusta Hawaii - Honolulu & Hilo South Carolina - Charleston & Columbia There we have it. |

Virginia Beach is the largest city in Virginia. More importantly, nobody calls Chesapeake "Chesapeake City."

As of 2002 Census Estimate:
GA: Atlanta and Augusta KY: Louisville and Lexington OH: Columbus and Cleveland PA: Philadelphia and Pittsburgh SC: Columbia and Charleston WI: Milwaukee and Madison WY: Cheyenne and Casper There is no incorporated population for Hilo (according to the Census website), though Hawaii County is treated as one unit and it is second to Honolulu in population. As noted earlier, Tacoma has passed Spokane in the last two years, removing Washington from the list, so technically, there's only eight. (Yes, it's a rather anal analysis, but I'm a geography buff.) |

The source that I saw was the "reader comments' section of Games magazine. (I have been accused of just typing out puzzles from Games before, but this is, I think, the first time I actually used one of their here)
The reader letter was pointing out that Augusta, GA is technically the second place city in Georgia, because it is formally listed as including an adjacent/surrounding county (Richland County?)-- thereby making it the ninth entry in their list. So, I can verify that as originally stated the puzzle said eight states, and then Games acknowledged that Georgia qualified as well. For what that's worth. (But I don't have the back copy to verify the other eight) |

Yep. Augusta and Richland County are considered one unit by the Census Bureau. It enables them to leap past Columbus for second place. Rather similar to Nashville/Davidson County in Tennessee.

not even close. Des Moines is by far the largest city in the state(400,000 or so), I think Ames is smaller than Iowa City(around 75,000)... if not than it's pretty close |

Like tucker, I can jump in and finalize the question about Iowa. NO.
Des Moines is Largest, followed by Cedar Rapids. The number 3 is over 100,000 less than the two big boys. And Ames (which I live not that far from), is a great town, but it's only about 60,000.
