Hmmmmm...
What am I to make of a 35-year-old catcher who is overall one-star, potential of 4 stars? Does that mean that he used to be good, and that maybe he can re-claim his old self if he gets lucky, or is this a quirk or bug?

It means he was once good, but at that age he is very very unlikely to get better again. In the development engine, actualy ratings drop first, and the talent follows when the hitter ages. Sometimes this results in situations you describe. I'm toying with the thought to adjust this, so if the player > 30 years, and his talent is bigger than his actual rating, just set the talent to the actual rating when displayed. OK. He used to be a stud. He actually hit 41 homers at age 22, and had seven straight seasons of 33 or more homers. One thing I don't like: draft position is no longer near the top of the "SION" player card (which mirrors the HTML player cards from 6.x). I have to go to the bottom of that card to see when a guy was drafted.

ARGUMENT FOR LEAVING IT: When taking over a new team, or looking at team that's not mine, it's kind of cool to have a very quick way to see who used to be good. ARGUMENT FOR TAKING IT OUT: It is contrary to what we're used to seeing in text sims. If you're going to create a new word processor, you use Ctrl-B for boldface, Ctrl-I for italics, and Ctrl-U for underlining. You don't want to force people to learn a whole new system. (Tangent: This is one thing that doomed Empire Earth II. As important as hotkeys are to playing that game well, why in the WORLD did they change virtually EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM between EE1 and EE2.)

Yup. This is EXACTLY what I wanted:
That's big for me. I asked for this years ago for every text sim. Glad to see people are finally starting to take notice on the right-click thing. Notice the "ben batting ratings" down in the lower left. It was very easy to set up this view for exactly the ratings I want to see. I'd think this screen will be where I spend the majority of my time, and I like it so far.

I'll have to second Ben's thoughts. It's counterintuitive to have a 35 year old who is a 1-star with 4-star potential. I think by that time, the scouts realize he's a Geronimo Gil and not a Lance Parrish.

Is there a reason that some players don't have pics? Did I do something wrong?
By the way, I'm surprised to say that the facegen stuff REALLY adds a lot. It's great to see 60-year-old managers look like they are 60.

All players in the FA pool are 40 or under, with two exceptions. There are two MRs, aged 61 and 63.
Markus, is this a bug, or a feature?

Ah...this'll probably help track this down: both of these old farts were released at the very beginning of the sim, in 2007, and never played in a game at any level. I reckon they're still hoping for the big break.

Are you kidding, Shihi Murata is the feel-good story of the year! Why, the stories he tells about doing things "old school" are worth his salary alone.
Ask him about the time he and Shoji worked as bailiffs on the People's Court.

Gotta run some errands, but the early verdict is that it is much easier to get around in than the last version. At least I'll be able to give this one a chance. I have some down/alone time this afternoon. I'll try to dig in a little more deeply by truly running the team for a full season, then starting looking more in-depth at stats, AI, and the like.

I posted this on the TRTR #8 thread, but I thought I'd post it here since you're here, Markus:
The blogger mentions resting your 35-year old centerfielder on a cold, April night - is there really a greater propensity for injury when it's raining and cold?

Forgive my ignorance, but do we know how the "Personality" section of the ratings is supposed to work? Some, like Loyalty and Greed, are obvious. However, what about "Work Ethic", "Intelligence" and "Leader Ability." Have these been explained?

Work ethink & intelligence are used in the player development & aging code. A player with a high work ethic rating is more likely to develop faster and age slower and than one with a low work ethic rating. Intelligence is similar, though not used in aging, but rather when the player develops. Leader ability... used in a weird formula to calculate team chemistry, which has a very small effect on team performance. (Switch off personality ratings if you don't like this ) |

5th round pick. Ends up breaking the 100SB barrier at default stat settings...

Oh, I have NO problem with it. It's a positive, as far as I'm concerned. If I end up playing this game seriously, I'll certainly tinker around with stats anyway, but seeing a 100-SB season at default settings takes me back to the good ol' days that I prefer to model anyway. I especially need to do something about the CG record being only 8. Ugh. Carlton did 8 or more 17 times in a row. Perry finished 10 in the NL at age 40. Buncha young wimps today.

I kind of like it this way to see how good a player used to be. One way you could look at it, would be to have the second Star rating listed as Peak rating instead of potential and maybe throw in an arrow to show if he is progressing or declining. This way we could see what prospects could become and also what Veterans once were....or if they lived up to their peak potential ever. Just a thought. Just stopped my sim because of the first head scratcher trade that I've noticed:
The Padres (who were running a bit low on money so that might be a factor) traded a 32 year old Ryan Howard (he went there as a FA a year prior) who had hit 50 plus homers each of the last 6 years and was on pace for another 50 homer season, a weak MR, a good prospect at 3B, and a poor prospect at 1B, AND 3 million dollars for Brad Penny. Penny is 35, his ratings are in decline (still good - Stuff is 51, movement of 55, and Control of 74,) but he has always been a .500 pitcher in this career. Seems like they gave up a heavy price for an older pitcher and SD doesn't have a 1B in the wings to produce Howard's type of numbers. Hmmm.. maybe a never mind. I decided to finish out the season before I posted. Brad Penny went 12-6 for the Padres the rest of the way. Their prospect (who replaced Howard at 1B) who didn't look that good to me (I have scouts off) hit .252 with 12 homers and 47 RBI's the rest of the year and most importantly they won 100 games and made the playoffs.

Dola -
The following year, Brad Penny was an important pitcher that went 15-9 for a World Championship Padres team that went 103-59 overall. That prospect that I thought looked poor hit .313-31-107. |

I started a sim last night at about 11PM and opened it up at about 7:30 my time. The league was in 2054. (I started at 2007)
Not a bad clip IMHO. Just make sure you turn off all reporting and picture gens and it flies at a pretty good clip. (I actually had some almanac functions on, I"m going to try another run today with none of those on) I noticed a couple of troublesome things, but I need to run again because I stupidly deleted the test league. (yes, I'm an idiot) The career HR leader hit 853. He was a monster, who won 6 MVP awards and slugged over 40 HR 10 consecutive years. (career high was 58) As a 25 year old, with 2x 40HR seasons already under his belt, he was shipped, along with 3 million dollars for a 31 year old SP. The pitcher was solid, but we aren't talking Pedro Martinez or Greg Maddux solid. If I had to use real a real world example it'd be like if the Cardinals traded King Albert for Bronson Arroyo. Even in your example above, Eaglesfan27, there is no way a guy who hit 50HR for six straight years gets dealt for a 35 year old pitcher. I don't care how Penny finished the year out. This isn't like the Tigers trading an unproven Smoltz for an aging Alexander. This is a proven MVP candidate being shipped for an aging third starter. Still, this is very much an improved game. The waivers work better, the player development seems to be solid and it flies when you set it up right. I need to run a 75 to 100 year test league and sift through the stuff so I can get examples for Markus and post them to the correct forum. It's early. . . but as of now, this went from a "maybe" to an "automatic" purchase. I have four days to change my mind. |

Remember that this player could have been very mad and demanded a trade. This happens sometimes. I mean, the Red Sox tried to ship Ramirez (a future HoF member still in his prime) more than once

Another thing, trading is still being tweaked. In the beta, SP were a bit undervalued, and the preview build has a tweak included. Maybe that went too far so that SP are a bit overvalued now. Let's keep an eye on that

I'm using the same setup. A real life MLB league with full minors and I'm also very impressed with the speed. With the current clip and the almanac features off, I figure I will get through at least 100 years today and will examine stats this evening. I also agree with the trade still being questionable. I actually looked to see if Howard was demanding a trade, and I didn't see that in the news item (I do see it with plenty of other players) but maybe he was mad at the time and not quite to that point. Shrug. So far, it is the only head scratcher I've seen and I've frequently been stopping to look at trades. I'm now going to go play the 360 for a few hours and just let this run.

If you run a league overnight with the almanac off, can you run it later and get everything that you would get if you ran the almanac after every season?

The trade AI is very complex. It doesn't simply compare players. It evaluates the entire roster, including the minor league system, in several different ways before and after a potential trade, and then weighting the results. And it does not make any trades just for the sake of making a trade, so in some way they always make sense. |
