JULY 5TH: Stars (34-52) Vs Dodgers (52-31)
Belcher got knocked around again. Who the hell would want to trade for him at this point for god sakes. Karros had a homer and 3 RBI, Piazza had 3 hits. Final Score: Dodgers 9 Stars 2 JULY 6TH: Stars (34-53) Vs Dodgers (53-31) Nolan pitched an awesome game and we went to the ninth tied at 3 when Gary Varsho hit a gapper that took a weird bounce off our center field fence and he came all the way around for a thrilling game winning inside the park homer. Final Score: Stars 4 Dodgers 3 JULY 7TH: Stars (35-53) Vs Dodgers (53-32) Heading into the all star break Donovan Osborne got destroyed, giving up 8 runs in 3 innings. Eric Davis homered, Karros had 4 RBI and Offerman had 4 hits as our we just looked abysmal. Final Score: Dodgers 13 Stars 1 |

After weeks of speculation, a surprise team comes up with the right deal to land Belcher. Willie Greene is a good young hitting prospect. We immediately switch him to RF and send him to A. Once again we had to give up a middling prospect in Jones but the $300,000 they sent helps us a lot. |

June Report Card
Record: 35-54, 6th Place, 20.5 Games Back Code:
Not much of note here that hasn't been said before. McReynolds is hitting but not for power, Gomez has shown some pop but is clearly not an everyday players. Spiers has been a revelation and is someone I hope will be a major building block for us. Code:
Well our pitching had a shitty June, but to be fair we played a lot of games against some good teams. Finances We're now $2 Million in the hole with $2.6 Million in cash left. We should be ok the rest of the way though, especially if we move Bud Black before the trade deadline. Summary Over the next couple of months we'll see about some of our young pitching. Steve Cook or Hideo Nomo are next in line at AAA when we trade Bud Black and both will likely be in our starting rotation next season. With Weathers and Milt Hill I think we have a couple of solid bullpen pieces for the future so I'm hoping they show me something over the rest of the year. Offensively I don't have much hope. I'm pretty sure I know what Gomez, Naehring and Chamberlain are and that's nothing more than bench players so we have some major retooling to do in the offseason. |

JULY 20TH
Curt Young has a sore shoulder and will go on the DL. Steve Cook gets his shot at being in the rotation. JULY 27TH: Trade Code:
Pennington is a hard throwing lefty who we'll send to AAA until September and Goodwin is a speedy light hitting centerfielder who we hope we can try and grow, he'll go to A. The money they threw in is a major bonus. Paul Abbott will move into the starting rotation and Willie Banks gets called back up to be our long reliever. AUGUST 1ST Nolan Ryan has a groin injury and will go on the DL. Curt Youngs return from the DL will coincide with Ryans next start so that works out good. Around The League Some very interesting trades in July. The Padres sent Tony Gwynn to the White Sox for Maglio Ordonez, the deal made sense for both team but Padres fans were heartbroken. The Giants got Frank Viola from the Red Sox for 3 prospects including SP Shawn Estes. Rick Sutcliff went from Washington to the Yankees for a couple of prospects. The Braves, trying to get back in the NL West race sent Jermaine Dye and Javy Lopez to Kansas City for David Cone. The Giants countered by getting Bobby Bonilla from the Mets for a package that included SP Russ Ortiz. Bonds and Bonilla together again, heh. The Phillies acquired Todd Stotelmyer from Toronto for 3 prospects and The Reds got Bob Tewksbury from Washington. |

AUGUST 24TH
We've lost 22 games in a row. For the love of Pete. Nolan Ryan comes off the DL and takes Curt Youngs spot in the rotation. Brad Pennington gets called up and takes Scott Ruskins spot as our short lefty. Donovan Osborne and Steve Cooke have been HORRENDOUS. SEPTEMBER 1ST No More dicking around, Todd Helton will be our 1st basemen for the final month. He's killing it at AAA and there isn't any point in leaving him there. Hideo Nomo will replace Donovan Osborne in our rotation. Osborne has been dreadful. Around The League The Cardinals lead the Pirates by 3 games in the NL East while the Dodgers hold a 2.5 game lead on the Giants. The Orioles are clinging to a 2 game lead over the Yankees. |

Don Pall and Brad Pennington are both shut down with minor arm fatigue. SEPTEMBER 21ST Todd Helton is hitting .338. That'll do. Around The League The Phillies have moved into 1st place but only 1.5 games separate them from Pittsburgh and St. Louis. The Dodgers have a 2.5 game lead on the Giants. 1993 Season Report Card
Record: 56-106, 7th Place, 45 Games Back Code:
Code:
Finances We ended up losing $3.1 Million on the year and have $2.5 Million in cash going into next season. Our average attendance was only 6,239 which is obviously abysmal. ESPN has done so many stories on the failure of baseball in Oklahoma City that there is already widespread talk of us moving. Summary Looking back on things I went through the expansion draft way too quickly with the mindset of grabbing veterans and dealing them off, I think I did a very poor job of assembling this team from the get go. That being said, I have a lot of leeway this offseason. On the offensive side of things I have Goodwin, McReynolds, Spiers and Helton all set as starters for next season so that's a big plus. What I need to do is surround them with better players as well as a better bench. There is some offensive talent in our minor league system but guys like Matsui, Tejada and Glanville are at least another year away I think. On the pitching side, Alex Fernandez is not an ace but he's a solid arm. Nomo looked real good in his audition and he has a spot in the rotation sewn up. After that there's some room to work. Cook and Osborne are possible but they both struggled. A guy like Abbott could get a shot and who knows if Nolan wants to come back. Our pen was bad but I think we have some competent arms that if we use them right we can get some solid production out of the pen. Down in the minors guys like Aaron Sele and Joey Hamilton will probably not be ready next season but who knows. Last edited by Suicane75 : 06-07-2011 at 01:49 AM. |

1994 OFFSEASON
Retirement: SP Nolan Ryan. I would have liked to have him back for one more year but he was done. Retirement: RF Gary Varsho. He wouldn't have been back anyway. Expiring Contract: RF Dan Pasqua is willing to take a $120K salary cut for a 3 year deal. Thanks but no thanks. You and your .188 average can high tail it out of town. Arbitration: 2B Tim Naehring is an interesting case. He wants $660K, I'm thinking about half that but if I lose I'm gonna owe him way more than I want to pay. Still he's young and did come on over the 2nd half of the season. Worse comes to worse I can try and get something for him. We offer $350K which was probably too low and he wins arbitration and a salary of $660K for the year. Expiring Contract: RF Dave Clark is willing to take a pay cut but I got no interest in keeping him. He's gone. Arbitration: SS Eric Yelding is a speedy guy but he's a light hitter and his defense is really not that great. I don't even let it get to arbitration as I release him. Expiring Contract: C Steve Lake did a good job for us as our backup catcher but I'm not interested in having him back even if he is willing to take a pay cut. He's gone. Arbitration: 3B Leo Gomez is up next. He's asking for way less money than I expected, just $400K. He's a guy whose very usefull against lefties but despite his power is not an every day third basemen. Still, just like Naehring I can probably move him if I lose the arbitration case. I'll offer $300K and see what happens. We won the case and have him locked in for the year at $300K. Arbitration: RP Scott Ruskin. We have a ton of arms in the pen including some lefties. I really liked the way Scott pitched early in the year but he's clearly not a go to type of short lefty reliever so we decline to even go to arbitration and instead release him. |

I'd had feelers out on Naehring ever since he won arbitration and the Dodgers were really coming hard after him. In the end I'm quite happy with the haul we got for him. Young will be our everyday second basemen. He's a slap hitter with a good eye and lots of speed, something I really want at the top of my lineup. He's adequate at second base but Naehring was no better. Dave Hansen is someone who can hit righties and if we keep Gomez is the perfect platoon mate. At any rate I have him penciled in as our starting 3B. He's not great but he's a solid body. Carlos Hernandez can hit lefties and play defense, which makes him the perfect backup catcher. Bournigal will compete for a bench start but at worst he's good, cheap filler down in AAA which is what Pye and Bush are. Trade: Code:
We gave up a lot in this deal to get Reynolds I admit. But his skill set is one that superceeds his ratings in our opinion. He's got good control, mixes his pitches and has a full season under his belt. We think we have a very competent starter here. Of the guys we gave up, Osborne was a lost cause as far as we were concerned. Quirico has a chance to be good but he's never gonna be a high level pitcher. Weathers became expendable when Chris Bushing started to blossom and Butch Henry was just dreadful last year. Like I said, it's a haul we gave up but I like slotting Reynolds in with Fernandez and Nomo. Trade: Code:
Well this was certainly a biggie. The haul we took in here was as much about saving money as it was getting talent but there is definately some talent here. First off Womack is exactly the kind of guy we like, he's a speedster. He has played some right field and we'll use him there from the get go. Next is Kevin Young, he compliments Hansen perfectly from the left side and while he doesn't have near the power Gomez does I like him just as much. John Hope is a kid who has some upside and could compete for a rotation spot. Trade: Code:
I was very tentative about this deal. Nagy was left open in the expansion draft, then traded to the Yankees and now the Yankees are offering him up to get an old pitcher and a troubled slugger. On the other hand he's pitched great wherever he's gone, is young and fits in with the kind of staff I want to grow. Neel has a lot of talent but he's a bit of a dick with a shady personal life. Maybe that's why Steinbrenner wanted him. Free Agent Signing: 2B Scott Fletcher to a 2 year deal worth $280K per year. Fletcher can back up at SS & 2B. Trade: Code:
I was actually dangling Banks out there in search of a lefty arm or two to put in AAA but when the Cardinals offered Jordan I couldn't decline. This gives us a glut of outfielders but that's a problem i'll gladly deal with. |

1994 Oklahoma City Stars Season Preview
Lineup Code:
God am I ever happier with this lineup compared to last years. We lack power for sure but we did last season as well so I can't bitch about it. What we do have is a ton of speed up top and some solid guys in the heart of the order that we hope can run produce. I'm not pleased with Heltons ratings but his actual numbers suggest he'll hit as I expect so i'm not gonna worry too much out of the gate. Young and Goodwin obviously need to get on base and i'm pretty confident that my 3-4-5 guys will be able to produce. The bottom of the order isn't a dead zone like last year so I think we should be able to score some runs. The other bonus we have is flexibility. Womack can play SS, Spiers can play 3B, Jordan can play every OF spot and 1B if needed. Our bench will see a good deal of time on the field and that will hopefully keep everyone nice and fresh. The biggest thing is I'm excited to play with this team. Pitching Staff Code:
Obviously the acquisition of Reynolds and Nagy were huge. Along with Fernandez and Nomo I'm expecting my starters to be strong. Steve Cook is a wild card but I have 2 really good prospects at AAA in Hamilton & Sele so we have some room to work. The pen is a major question mark. I traded a lot of guys who had good ratings but hadn't produced. Pall and Hill both were solid at the back of the pen last year and I hope they can reproduce that this year. Pennington is a lefty specialist who looks good. John Hope has always been a start but the lack of stuff from Chris Bushing in spring training forced me to move hope to the pen. He's got good stuff but i'm just not sure. Moeller is a giant question mark, he's only here because he's a lefty, something we should have addressed better in the offseason. We're devoid of left handed arms in our system. Abbott is a strong piece, he'll get a lot of work and will be counted on much more than his long reliever role indicates. Minor Leagues Code:
On the offensive side of things Glanville is still developing and is a ways away. Willie Greene will start at AA but he's close to being ready for the majors, it's just a question of making room. Tejada and Matsui will likely see AA at some point this season as they both have ratings beyond their years. Tatis and Drew will start the season in rookie ball but should move up to A ball somewhere around mid season. Pitching wise the only real big prospects we have are Hamilton and Sele, both guys are close to being all they'll be and the AAA seasoning will hopefully help them. Either one of them could start for us at some point this season if it comes down to it. The guys in rookie ball are still a long ways away. Finances Farm System: $6,000,000 (1st) Scouting: $6,000,000 (1st) Medical Staff: $4,500,000 (1st) Payroll: $7,300,000 Payroll Budget: $4,400,000 Cash: $3,300,000 Once again I'm not shy about throwing a lot of money into my scouting & medical budget. We need our youngsters to develop, that's imperative if we want to build anything. Obviously we're going to lose money, but if we can keep our heads above water I'll be ok with it. I've got focus on winning with this team and if I do that the fans will come out and maybe we can keep the losses at a minimum. Last edited by Suicane75 : 06-07-2011 at 03:22 PM. |

Monday April 1st: Off Day
Tuesday April 2nd: Stars (0-0) Vs Padres (0-0) Certainly not the best start to the season. Alex Fernandez only went five innings, giving up five runs despite striking out 9. Abbott and Hope were solid in relief. McGriff and Shipley each had 3 hits for the Padres while Canseco homered. We didn't do a whole lot on offense off of Jim Deshaies. Oh well, can't win em all. We had 9,000 people show up. Final Score: Padres 6 Stars 2 Wednesday April 3rd: Stars (0-1) Vs Padres (1-0) Hideo Nomo was dealing today. He went 7 strong innings and left down 2-1. In the bottom of the ninth Kevin McReynolds would double and score to tie it up. From there both bullpens were awesome as the game went to the 14th inning. Dennis Moeller, in his 2nd inning of work allowed a solo HR to Gary Sheffield. In the bottom of the frame we got runners at 1st and 3rd with 2 hout but Eric Young flied out to end the game. It's a very tough loss but we pitched our hearts out. Kevin McReynolds had 3 hits and Eric Young had 2 hits and stole his second base in as many games. Attendance was down to $6,300. Final Score: Padres 3 Stars 2 (14 Innings) Thursday April 4th: Stars (0-2) Vs Padres (2-0) Charles Nagy gave up five runs in the first 3 innings thanks to shitty pitching and shitty defense, 3 errors worth. We scraped to get back into it but they pulled away in the late innings. I'm not pleased. Brian Jordan had a pinch hit homer and Womack had 2 RBI but we've played badly in all facets of the game so far. Sheffield had 4 hits and McGriff had 3 hits and an RBI. Friday April 5th: Stars (0-3) At Giants (1-2)
Now this is more like it. We jumped out early and stayed ahead all day. We knocked out 19 hits and scored 11 times. Helton, McReynolds and Hansen all homered. Spiers, McReynolds and Hansen all had 3 hits as we romped. Shane Reynolds gave up 5 runs in 6 innings, not sharp but it's ok. Hope pitched the last 3 innings to give us our first win of the year. Final Score: Stars 11 Giants 6 Already $80,000 in the hole this year we had to lower our budgets greatly or we had no shot at making it through the season. Our Farm & Scouting budgets was reduced to $4,500,000 each, making them 4th and 7th respectively. Our medical was reduced to $3,000,000 which puts us 5th. These reductions ought to keep us from going broke. Saturday April 6th: Stars (1-3) At Giants (1-3) Steve Cook was good, going 7 innings and allowing just 3 runs, all on solo shots from Clark, Bonds and Dave Martinez. We trailed 3-2 going into the ninth but were able to tie it up. Matt Williams however would hit a one out single through a drawn in infield with the bases loaded in the 10th to win it for them. A tough loss. Dave Hansen had 2 hits. Final Score: Giants 4 Stars 3 (10 Innings) Sunday April 7th: Stars (1-4) At Giants (2-3) Alex Fernandez pitched seven strong innings but left down 3-0. Our pen would give up 3 more in the eighth and by the time Dave Hansen hit a 3 run homer it was too late. Bill Swift pretty much dominated us today as we continue to suck. Tuesday April 9th: Stars (1-5) At Braves (5-1)
Nomo fell behind early when he allowed a 3 run homer to Chipper Jones in the first inning. Hideo would settle down though and go 6 innings, only giving up another Jones homer as he left down 4-2 to Tom Glavine. Our pen would hold them but we just couldn't get anything off of Glavine as we lose yet another game. Final Score: Braves 4 Stars 2 Wednesday April 10th: Stars (1-6) At Braves (6-1) Kevin McReynolds got us ahead early with a 2 run double in the first inning. Nagy would leave six innings up 3-2 but our pen would allow them to tie it in the seventh. They would go on to win it in the bottom of the 11th on a Damon Barryhill base hit with the sacks loaded. Eff me. Justice had 4 hits for them and Palmeiro had a homer. Nothing to note from our friggin offense cause it effin sucks. Final Score: Braves 4 Stars 3 (11 Innings) After the game we find out that Don Pall broke his wrist on a ball off of Lemke that hit him. He's out a month. We call up RP Andy Cook and hand the closers role over to Milt Hill although god knows when the hell we'll actually need a game closed out. Thursday April 11th: Stars (1-7) At Braves (7-1) Helton went 3-5 with 4 RBI, Eric Young added a 2 run homer and Shane Reynolds threw 7 innings of 1 run ball as we get a much needed win. Final Score: Stars 8 Braves 1 Last edited by Suicane75 : 06-08-2011 at 06:13 AM. |

Friday April 12th: Stars (2-7) Vs Reds (3-6)
Cook allowed back to back jacks to Kevin Mitchell and Reggie Sanders in the third to put them up 3-1. We would come roaring back to take a 7-3 lead off of Curt Lyons. Cook went into the 7th and our pen held on. Helton was 4-5 with a homer and 3 RBI. Brian Jordan had a 2 run single and Eusebio added 2 hits and 2 RBI. Two wins in a row, break out the champagne. Attendance was only 6,000. Final Score: Stars 9 Reds 5 Saturday April 13th: Stars (3-7) Vs Reds (3-7) Alex Fernandez was dealing into the seventh when he gave up 2 runs to tie it. It went to extra innings and our pen was awesome, getting it to the 11th when Scott Fletcher legged out an infield hit with 2 outs allowing the winning run to score! McReynolds homered. Final Score: Stars 3 Reds 2 Sunday April 14th: Stars (4-7) Vs Reds (3-8) It was gopher ball Sunday as the Reds blasted Hideo Nomo to the tune of 8 runs in 5 innings. Samuel, Fexlix Jose, Kevin Mitchell and Regie Sanders all went yard. We got 3 hits from Goodwin and homers from Helton & McReynolds but they never let us get close. Final Score: Reds 10 Stars 5 |

Monday April 15th: Stars (4-8) Vs Astros (8-4)
We went back and forth with the Astros early but Nagy settled down while we just kept pounding Butch Henry and then Roger Mason. When the dust cleared we pumped out 10 hits and 9 runs en route to victory. Carlos Hernandez had 2 hits and 3 RBI. Eric Young had 2 hits, 2 RBI and a steal. Nagy went 5.2 and gave up 4 runs but our pen did a fine job. [b]Final Score: Stars 9 Astros 4/[b] Tuesday April 16th: Stars (5-8) Vs Astros (8-5) Shane Reynolds got blasted for 6 first inning runs and 10 total in just 4 innings of work. What's worse is that his opponent Rafael Quirico, the guy we traded for him. Bichette had 4 hits, Luis Gonzalez had 3 hits and 3 RBI and Taubansee homered. Oh well, ya can't win em all. A 2 run Kevin McReynolds homer was our only offense. Final Score: Astros 10 Stars 2 Wednesday April 17th: Stars (5-9) Vs Astros (9-5) Backed by a homer and 3 RBI from Helton, Steve Cook went 6 strong innings leaving up 5-1. Friday April 19th: Stars (6-9) At Braves (10-6)
Alex Fernandez was wild, 6 walks, but left after 5 up 2-1 against Tom Glavine. We got a huge insurance run in the eigth that we ended up needing and Milt Hill closed it out for a very nice win. Our bullpen has been fantastic. Helton had 2 RBI and Eric Young had 2 hits and a steal. Final Score: Stars 3 Braves 2 Saturday April 20th: Stars (7-9) At Braves (10-7) Nomo gave up 3 runs in the first two innings but settled down and we finally got to John Smoltz for 4 runs in the sixth to go up 5-3. Tony Eusebio would homer in the eighth and our pen once again closed things out. Deion and Blauser homered for them. We are rolling and have a chance to be .500 for the first time ever tomorrow. Final Score: Stars 7 Braves 4 Sunday April 21st: Stars (8-9) At Braves (10-8) Nagy went 6 strong innings and left tied against David Come 2-2. The game would go all the way to the 12th when Paul Abbott would deliver a bases loaded walk to Ryan Klesko. I cannot complain though, this team has played so well and that bullpen has been so strong, you just can't win em all. Spiers and Helton had 2 hits and an RBI a piece. Tuesday April 23rd: Stars (8-10) At Astros (11-8)
Shane Reynolds rebounded big time from his shelacking at the hands of the Astros in his last start. He went into the 8th and left with a 5-3 lead. Milt Hill closed out the ninth for the win. Spiers had 2 RBI and we stole 4 bases off of Daryl Kile. Final Score: Stars 5 Astros 3 Wednesday April 24th: Stars (9-10) At Astros (11-9) Steve Cook gave up a couple of early homers to Steve Finley and Luis Gonzalez but we broke through for 6 runs in the 5th inning and Cook left up 9-3. Our pen closed it out and we move to .500 for the first time in team history. Goodwin had 4 hits and 3 steals. Eusebio had 3 RBI. Final Score: Stars 9 Astros 3 Thursday April 25th: Stars (10-10) At Astros (11-10) Alex Fernandez pitched 7 brilliant innings and left up 2-1. Despite walking the first two batters in the bottom of the ninth, Milt Hill got out of it to record the save and push us over .500 and sweep the Astros. What a streak we're on. Brian Jordan had 2 hits, including a home run. Final Score: Stars 2 Astros 1 As we head home we're one of 6 teams in the NL West all within 1.5 games of each other. The Dodgers are in first so it's conceivable that at some point this weekend we could be in first friggin place. It'll be interesting to see what our attendance is like tomorrow night. |

Friday April 26th: Stars (11-10) Vs Dodgers (13-10)
No struggled early and we trailed 4-0 at one point but in the 6th inning we broke through against Ramon Martinez, scoring 7 times to go up 8-4. Our pen closed it out and we finish the day .5 games out of first place. Eric Young was 4-4 with 3 RBI and 3 SB. Eusebio and Womack had 2 hits a piece and we stole a total of 9 bases on the day. Wallach had a 2 run homer for them. Attendance was over 9,000. Final Score: Stars 9 Dodgers 4 Saturday April 27th: Stars (12-10) Vs Dodgers (13-11) We jumped all over Erik Hanson early and while he scuffled through five innings, Nagy left with a 6-2 lead. Our bullpen threw 4 innings of one run ball and we win again! With the Reds losing today we stand alone in first place, half a game ahead of the Reds and Astros. McReynolds had 3 hits and 3 RBI while Eusebio had 3 hits and 3 runs scored. Attendance today was again over 9,000. Final Score: Stars 10 Dodgers 3 Sunday April 28th: Stars (13-10) Vs Dodgers (13-12) Shane Reynolds did a fine job, going six innings and giving up just 3 runs but Pedro Martinez was dealing. He threw a 3 hit shutout to finally silence our bats and get out of town avoiding the sweep. Strawberry homered and Offerman and Harris had 2 hits a piece. We came close but still havn't cracked 10,000 in attendance. Tough crowd. We're now in a 3 way tie for first with the Giants and Dodgers and the Giants are heading into town. Fans better show up. Tuesday April 30th: Stars (13-11) Vs Giants (13-11)
Steve Cook struggled through 6 innings and left down 4-3 thanks mostly to two homers given up to Barry Bonds. Our pen kept it there but we couldn't scrape another run out and Rod Beck closed us down in the ninth. A tough loss. Eric Young was 3-4. Attendance was down to 7,500. For the love of Sally. Final Score: Giants 4 Stars 3 Wednesday May 1st: Stars (13-12) Vs Giants (14-11) Fernandez got tagged for 3 first inning runs, 2 of which came on a Wil Clark homer. He would get tagged for 3 more in the fifth and leave down 6-0. Abbott and Cook got beat up in relief and they romped as we dropped our 3rd straight game. Julio Franco and Wil Clark had 4 hits a piece and Matt Williams had 4 RBI. Final Score: Giants 11 Stars 4 Thursday May 2nd: Stars (13-13) Vs Giants (15-11) Nomo gave up two 2nd inning runs but settled down to pitch 7 strong innings and left up 5-2. Our pen did it's job and Milt Hill got a 4 out save as we salvaged the final game of the series with a win off of Osvaldo Fernandez. Final Score: Stars 5 Giants 3 |

Summary: It would of been hard to ask for better out of the first month of the season. My bullpen has been amazing even with Abbotts struggles and Nomo and Reynolds each had a start that really affected their ERA but overall i'm pleased with them. On offense it's about as expected. Wish Spiers were hitting better but Helton is doing as expected. The bench is not hitting as well as I'd hoped but I can't complain. |

Thanks much. Yeah, salary had to come down or I would been done quick. I hope the Tejada move pans out, so far his power hasn't come to fruition but i've got my finger crossed. |

Friday May 3rd: Stars (14-13) At Padres (11-17)
A 3 run double from Jose Canseco in the first inning off of Nagy put them out in front. We would scrape back and Nagy would leave having gone 5.2 innings with the score tied at 4. Our pen would keep the game tied into the bottom of the 12th when the won it. A tough loss but Abbott and Hope pitched well in relief, our offense just couldn't back them up. Spiers and Jordan each had 3 hits. Bip Roberts went 3-5 with 4 steals for those jerks. Final Score: Padres 5 Stars 4 (12 Innings) Saturday May 4th: Stars (14-14) At Padres (12-17) Shane Reynolds gave up 4 runs in 7 innings and Jim Deshaies shut us out on 4 hits as we looked lifeless again. Our bats really need to wake up. Wes Chamberlain had 2 hits. Final Score: Padres 4 Stars 0 Sunday May 5th: Stars (14-15) At Padres (13-17) Steve Cook struck out 9 over 8 innings of shutout ball. Bill Spiers hit a 3 run inside the park homer in the 6th and Helton added 3 hits as we salvage a game from the series and head home with a 15-15 record. Final Score: Stars 4 Padres 0 |

Monday May 6th: Stars (15-15) Vs Pirates (16-15)
Alex Fernandez gave up 8 runs over 6.2 innings of work. Denny Neagle and Alejandro Pena combined to hold us to 3 runs as we dropped the series opener. Orlando Merced went 3-5 with a homer and Lance Parish and Jeff King each had 2 RBI. Bill Spiers had 2 RBI. Attendance was 7,700. Final Score: Pirates 8 Stars 3 Tuesday May 7th: Stars (15-16) Vs Pirates (17-15) Down 3-1 in the 7th to some douche goozle named Sean Lawrence we finally broke through, scoring 4 runs, 2 of which came on an Eric Young homer. Up 6-3 in the ninth Milt Hill would get the save for a nice win. McReynolds homered and Carlos Hernandez had 2 hits. Nomo went 7 strong innings for the win. Final Score: Stars 6 Pirates 3 Wednesday May 8th: Stars (16-16) Vs Pirates (17-16) Charles Nagy left after 7 innings up 5-2 vs John Lieber. Friday May 10th: Stars (18-16) At Braves (15-19)
Steve Cook scattered 7 hits over 7 innings and left tied 2-2 with Greg Maddux. Abbott and Moeller would give up 3 eighth inning runs though. We would score 2 in the top of the ninth but came up just short. Spiers and Hulse each had 2 RBI. Blauser homered for them and Klesko had 2 RBI. Final Score: Braves 5 Stars 4 Don Pall is ready to come off of the DL. Even though Andy Cook has a 1.35 ERA he's the guy that has to go back down to AAA. Pall will step back into the closers role with Milt Hill returning to his setup role. Saturday May 11th: Stars (18-17) At Braves (16-19) Alex Fernandez struggled again, going just 4 innings and giving up 7 runs. Our pen would get blasted for 6 more runs and Steve Avery tossed a 3 hit shutout as the stomped us into the ground. Justice and Palmeiro had 3 hits and 2 RBI a piece. Chipper Jones homered. Final Score: Braves 13 Stars 0 Sunday May 12th: Stars (18-18) At Braves (17-19) Nomo would only go 5 innings having given up 6 runs, 4 earned but left tied at 6-6. They would get a run in the bottom of the 6th and their pen would make it stand as they sweep us and send us under .500 on the year. Palmeiro homered and Blauser had 2 RBI for them. Eric Young had a 3 run double and Spiers had 3 hits. Final Score: Braves 7 Stars 6 Monday May 13th: Off Day |

Tuesday May 14th: Stars (18-19) Vs Giants (21-15)
Nagy threw 7 good innings but left down 3-1 vs Osvaldo Fernandez. Rod Beck would close us out in the ninth as our slide continues. McReynolds had 2 hits and an RBI. Matt Nokes homered for them. Final Score: Giants 4 Stars 2 Wednesday May 15th: Stars (18-20) Vs Giants (22-15) Shane Reynolds threw 7 strong innings and we got to Dave Burba en route to a much needed vicory. Eusebio had 2 hits and 3 RBI to pace us. Final Score: Stars 6 Giants 2 Thursday May 16th: Stars (19-20) Vs Giants (22-16) Steve Cook would leave after 5 down 2-0. Down 2-1 in the bottom of the ninth a two out RBI single by Hulse would tie it. Milt Hill would give up 3 runs in the 11th but we would pull within one in the bottom of the frame with Hulse again at bat. This time he would line out to center to end the game and send us to a very tough defeat. Womack had 3 hits and an RBI, Helton had 2 hits. Final Score: Giants 5 Stars 4 (11 Innings) Don Pall has an elbow strain. It shouldn't keep him out more than a week but with the way Andy Cook pitched I have no problem putting Pall back on the DL rather than pitch short for the next week. |

Friday May 17th: Stars (19-21) At Dodgers (20-21)
Alex Fernandez went 5.2 and left down 2-0 as Erik Hanson was dealing. Their pen would continue to shut us down as we were held to 3 hits, once again looking listless. Final Score: Dodgers 3 Stars 0 Saturday May 18th: Stars (19-22) At Dodgers (21-21) Nomo left after 5 innings having given up 6 runs, mostly due to the long ball. Their pen made the lead hold and despite out hitting them 14-11 we lost yet again. Hulse had 3 hits and 2 steals in a spot start. Piazza, Wallach and Strawberry homered for them. Final Score: Dodgers 7 Stars 3 Dave Hansen is only hitting .229 so for the next few games at least Spiers will move to 3B and Scott Fletcher will play SS. Sunday May 19th: Stars (19-23) At Dodgers (22-21) Nagy would go 7.1 and leave up 7-1 against Tom Candiotti. Abbott would get the final 5 outs as we salvage a win in the series finale. Helton was 3-5 with 4 RBI, Spiers had 3 hits and Young was 2-4 with 2 steals. Monday May 20th: Off Day |

Tuesday May 21st: Stars (20-23) Vs Braves (21-22)
We had a 3-2 lead on Greg Maddux going into the seventh but Reynolds labored and then Pennington and Cook allowed 2 runs to score. Their pen would close us down as we lose a game where we had Maddux on the ropes and let them get back ahead. I blame myself for leaving Reynolds in too long. McReynolds had a homer and 3 RBI for us. Blauser homered for them. Final Score: Braves 4 Stars 3 Wednesday May 22nd: Stars (20-24) Vs Braves (22-22) The long ball killed Steve Cooke today as he left after just 4.2 having given up 8 runs, all from homers by Deion, Chipper, Palmeiro and Charlie friggin O'Brien. We could never get in striking distance after that and despite out hitting them 13-7 we lost handily. That's what happens when you give up 4 dingers. Helton was 3-5. Final Score: Braves 8 Stars 4 Thurday May 23rd: Stars (20-25) Vs Braves (23-22) Welp. Alex Fernandez threw 6 strong innings but was bettered by Tom Glavine who threw a 2 hit shutout and the Braves leave town with a sweep. We're regressing to the mean. We had a whopping 5,700 people come watch us. Final Score: Braves 1 Stars 0 |

Nomo gave up 5 runs in 6 innings and Jim Deshaies pitched the 2nd straight shutout against us as the free fall continues. Stan Javier had 2 hits and Sheffield had 2 RBI. Final Score: Padres 7 Stars 0 Our lineup needs a spark. Womack is moving to SS, Spiers to 3B and Brian Jordan will get a shot in RF on an everyday basis. Saturday May 25th: Stars (20-27) At Padres (22-25) Well the offense woke up, unfortunately our pitching didn't hold up their end. Nagy gave up 6 runs in 5 innings and left down 6-3. We closed the gap but came up just short for another loss. Jordan went 3-5 with 3 RBI and Goodwin had 3 hits. Canseco and Bill Doran homered for the Padres. Final Score: Padres 7 Stars 6 Sunday May 26th: Stars (20-28) At Padres (23-25) Ughh, Reynolds left after just 5 down 3-1. We rallied to tie it in the top of the eighth but they Santiago singled home Canseco in the bottom of the inning and then Otsuka closed the door on us. We're just playing like shit right now. Womack had 3 hits for us. Canseco went 2-3 with a HR for them. Final Score: Padres 5 Stars 4 |

We lead 5-2 going into the bottom of the sixth inning against Greg Hibbard but Cooke, Cook and Hope imploded allowing a five spot. Their pen closed us down the rest of the way and the losses keep piling up. Eric Young and McReynolds had 3 hits each. Eduardo Zambrano was 2-4 with a homer and 3 RBI for the Cubs. Final Score: Cubs 7 Stars 4 Tuesday May 28th: Stars (20-30) At Cubs (21-29) Alex Fernandez left after five with it tied 2-2 but we got a run and our pen pitched 4 shutout innings to FINALLY!! get us a win. Finances: -$370,000 Code:
Obviously Helton had a rough month. Spiers is doing better but I expected a little more out of him. Womack is coming around so that's nice. Eusebio went into the shitter faster than a microwave cheeseburger. Jordan isn't hitting a lick, Hulse may get some outfield time sooner rather than later. Code:
Cooke has had his struggles this month that's for sure. Nagy continues to be our best overall starter. Nomo and Reynolds have numbers inflated by really bad starts but yeah, as a whole we havn't been near as good i'd hoped. Fernandez has been a major disappointment. The pen though, the pen has been the best part of the team and I was not expecting that. In the minors, Matsui and Tejada have both been promoted to AA. Drew and Tatis have moved up to A ball. It won't be long before Willie Greene is in AAA. On the pitching side, Joey Hamilton is dominating AAA and i hesitate to call him an ace but he's looking really good. |

Chicago leads Texas by 1.5 games in the AL West. Don Mattingly is having a resurgance. He leads the majors with a .404 average. Dante Bichette leads the NL at .371. Jim Thome still leads the majors with 22 homers and 53 RBI. Canseco, Reggie Sanders and Pedro Munoz are next but a ways off the pace. Ray Lankfords 50 RBI lead the NL. Dave Stieb of the White Sox and Jimmy Key of the Yankees are tied for the league lead in wins with 9. The Cardinals Jack McDowell leads the NL with 8. Randy Johnson, 95. And Curt Schilling, 92. Lead their respective leagues in K's by a good margin. The only trade of the season so far saw the Yankees send a package that included Hensely Meulens & Jim Abbott to the Royals for Tom Gordon. Saturday June 1st: Stars (23-31) Vs Astros (33-21) Shane Reynolds went 5.2, scattered 13 hits and left down 5-4. We would take the lead in the bottom of the eighth on a pinch hit Dave Hansen homer. Monday June 3rd: Stars (23-33) Vs Braves (29-26)
Nomo went just 5 innings and left down 4-2 against Tom Glavine. Our pen would allow a few more runs but it didn't matter cause we just couldn't do a thing vs Glavine & Mercker. Chamberlain had 3 hits, McReynolds homered. Chipper had 3 hits for them and Damon Berryhill homered. Final Score: Braves 7 Stars 2 Tuesday June 4th: Stars (23-34) Vs Braves (30-26) Nagy pitched 7 brilliant shutout innings and left up 2-0 vs Maddux. Moeller gave up a run in the eighth but Pall closed it out for the win. Nice. Goodwin was 3-4 with a steal and Womack had 2 steals. Final Score: Stars 2 Braves 1 After the game we make a roster move. We sign RF Rob Deer, who was just released by Oakland, to a 1 year deal worth $280K. Deer gives us a legit power bat against lefties, he can play LF, RF or 1B. We send 3B Dave Hansen down to AAA. Wednesday June 5th: Stars (24-34) Vs Braves (30-27) Shane Reynolds went 7.2 really strong innings, striking out 10 and giving up only a 2 run homer to Palmeiro and leaving with a 4-2 lead. Round 1: SP Javier Vazquez, 17 years old. 64/90. We very much debated taking Michael Young here but we just couldn't pass up the arm. His endurance is high and he has 4 pitches he throws well. Not a great year to have the first pick but he should develop into a front line starter. Round 2: LF Carlos Lee, 17 years old. 59/80. A good left fielder who can do everything well, projects right now to a solid 5 tool player although maybe not outstanding in any one area. Round 3: RF Juan Encarnacion, 18 years old, 56/81. Speedy player who may never develop power but should mature into a decent hitter. Round 4: SP Nate Teut. Left handed with high endurance. Out of high school. Clearly will need a lot of development time but I couldn't pass up a lefty arm like this. Round 5: CF Scott Podsednik, 18 years old, 53/81. Left handed speedster will be converted to CF. Round 6: Eric Eckenstahler, 17 years old. 47/82. Another lefty high schooler, this time a reliever. Again, it'll take a while but the potential is there.
