Is it odd that he has been found guilty but gets to go back to his uncle's house until next month when they sentence him? Just seemed odd to me.

I'm more worried about a suicide risk-he broke down numerous times during the trial, not sure how emotionally stable he is right now. But yeah does seem odd that he's free basically until sentencing

Yeah. I mean, I can't say I wish death on the guy, but I get a bad feeling that he's going to see no jail time for murdering someone.

Out of prison, but still under house arrest for the remainder of the sentence.

Don't worry. That's around the same time that Reeva Steenkamp will be back from the dead.

Out after 10 months. Maybe I've lived too long in a fascist police state, but I'm floored how some other countries deal with violent criminals.

Not sure I see a problem here? The state no longer has to pay to incarcerate him and he is still, essentially, a prisoner. Pistorius is broke, can't have alcohol, drugs and, likely, firearms.

Yet the US has a higher murder rate than most industrialized nations. Maybe they're doing something right.

He only got convicted of negligent homicide. The equivalent of a hunting accident.

Who's doing something right, South Africa? Their murder rate is about 8 times that of the U.S.

What happens to someone who is under house arrest but can no longer afford to live in a house?

Probably goes back to the pen. But Pistorius will be staying with relatives.

I think South Africa "culpable homicide" is closer to a hunting accident (which some states might call "involuntary manslaughter") because the big thing the judge emphasized was that the government not only failed to prove intent to kill, but it failed to prove intent to shoot or harm her specifically. In other words, he didn't know it was her. So he was convicted for negligence, and for "acting too hastily."

Edit: I think he'd have a better chance of getting off entirely here because we have stronger self-defense law. Here, it's not about whether you actually needed to defend yourself, it's about what you sincerely and reasonably believed at the time. Even if it turns out your fear was completely misplaced and wrong. And I kind of wonder if he would have been charged even if the person he shot turned out to be an intruder. The judge's verdict comments seems to say he was negligent and acted too hastily and that he should have known that he was likely to kill ANYONE that was behind the door. Of course in a similar situation in the U.S., if this turned out to be an intruder, he'd definitely get off.

While I agree with the final result, wouldn't like that style of court system here.

The concept of a reverse appeals court where the prosecution can appeal for a better verdict definitely seems strange.

Why? It's not double jeopardy. Why shouldn't there be a chance for the law to be correctly applied, if there's a mistake, for both the defense and prosecution?
