I hope we're charging a late entry fee for all the bandwagoners.

BTW, has anyone ever been to Shockinaw, Michigan? Seems to be getting a lot of press these last two days.

CNN:

Washington Post is reporting that intelligence believed Saddam and one or both of his sons were in the bunker the U.S. bombed in the opening night. Nothing too surprising, but at least it's a "confirmation" of what many had thought.

edit: here's the link:
Hussein's fate still uncertain

To follow up on Airhog's post, the Wash Post article talks about the mistress as well, and it mentions that they think Hussein may have at least been injured because " medical attention was urgently summoned on his behalf."

Two things:

ABC News is reporting that sources saw Saddam Hussein being carried out of that bunker on a hospital gurney with an oxygen mask on.

BBC News also reporting that B-52 bombers are taking off from RAF bases in England.

No word on whether or not they'll pay a stop at Andy M's house.

From the Secretary of Defense:

SUBJECT: MESSAGE TO TROOPS

1. ON MONDAY NIGHT, MARCH 17, PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH, OUR
COMMANDER IN CHIEF, DELIVERED AN ULTIMATUM TO SADDAM HUSSEIN: TO
LEAVE IRAQ WITHIN 48 HOURS. REFUSAL TO DO SO WILL RESULT IN MILITARY
CONFLICT. AND IF IT COMES TO WAR, THE PRESIDENT MADE CLEAR, SADDAM
HUSSEIN'S REGIME WILL BE REMOVED FROM POWER, THE IRAQI PEOPLE WILL
BE LIBERATED, AND WE WILL BEGIN DISARMING IRAQ OF ITS WEAPONS OF MASS
DESTRUCTION.

2. YOU ARE THE MEN AND WOMEN WHO WILL DELIVER ON THE PRESIDENT'S
PLEDGE. AND TODAY, AS YOU AND COALITION FORCES BEGIN TO FULFILL
YOUR MISSION, KNOW THAT YOU WILL CARRY THE THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS OF
THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WITH YOU INTO BATTLE.

3. I FULLY RECOGNIZE THAT LIVES ARE AT STAKE-AMERICAN, COALITION,
AND IRAQI; MILITARY AND CIVILIAN. WAR IS A LAST RESORT, TO BE
UNDERTAKEN ONLY AFTER EVERY OTHER ALTERNATIVE HAS BEEN TRIED.

4. FOR TWELVE YEARS, THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY SOUGHT TO DISARM
IRAQ PEACEFULLY. WE HAVE TRIED ECONOMIC SANCTIONS, INSPECTIONS, AND
DIPLOMACY-ALL HAVE FAILED. THE IRAQI REGIME REPEATEDLY REFUSED TO
DISARM.

5. AS THE PRESIDENT SAID, THE IRAQI REGIME IS A GRAVE AND GATHERING
DANGER. WITH EACH PASSING DAY, SADDAM HUSSEIN ADVANCES HIS ARSENAL
OF WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION, AND COULD PASS THEM ALONG TO
TERRORISTS. IF HE IS ALLOWED TO DO SO, THE RESULT COULD BE THE
DEATHS NOT OF 3,000 PEOPLE, AS ON SEPTEMBER 11TH, BUT 30,000 OR
300,000 OR MORE.

6. OUR RESPONSIBILITY - YOUR MISSION - IS TO PREVENT THAT FROM
HAPPENING AND ELIMINATE THE IRAQI REGIME AS A THREAT.

7. YOU ARE THE BEST LED, BEST TRAINED, STRONGEST, AND MOST CAPABLE
MILITARY IN THE WORLD. I HAVE FULL CONFIDENCE IN YOUR ABILITY, YOUR
COURAGE AND YOUR DEDICATION TO OUR COUNTRY.

8. AS YOU EMBARK ON THIS MISSION, KNOW THAT YOU ARE NOT ALONE. OUR
COALITION INCLUDES DOZENS OF COUNTRIES THAT ARE HELPING IN A VARIETY
OF WAYS. YOU WILL FIGHT ALONGSIDE THE FORCES OF SUCH STALWART
FRIENDS AS AUSTRALIA, GREAT BRITAIN AND MANY OTHERS.

9. YOU MAY FACE GREAT CHALLENGES AND DANGERS. WARS HAVE THEIR
SURPRISES.

10. THE MOST DIFFICULT STEP A PRESIDENT CAN MAKE IS THE DECISION TO
SEND THE ARMED FORCES OF OUR NATION INTO BATTLE.

11. WHEN I RETURNED TO THE PENTAGON AFTER SERVING HERE A QUARTER
CENTURY AGO, I WROTE A SERIES OF GUIDELINES TO HELP GUIDE MY THINKING
REGARDING THE USE OF FORCE. THEY INCLUDED THESE QUESTIONS:
-IS THERE A GOOD REASON TO GO TO WAR?
-HAVE WE ENGAGED ALL INSTRUMENTS OF NATIONAL POWER IN SEARCH OF
A PEACEFUL SOLUTION?
-IS THE OBJECTIVE ACHIEVABLE?
-HAVE WE SET FORTH CLEAR GOALS?
-DOES THE OBJECTIVE MERIT RISKING AMERICAN LIVES?
-HAVE WE MADE AVAILABLE ALL THE RESOURCES AND MILITARY
CAPABILITIES NEEDED TO ACHIEVE VICTORY?
-HAVE WE INVESTED THE EFFORT AND POLITICAL CAPITAL TO EXPLAIN
THE NEED FOR ACTION AND TO MARSHAL AND SUSTAIN PUBLIC SUPPORT?
-HAVE WE BEEN HONEST-WITH OURSELVES AND THE WORLD-ABOUT THE
RISKS OF ACTION, BUT ALSO ABOUT THE LESS OBVIOUS RISKS OF
INACTION?

12. THE PRESIDENT HAS MADE THE CASE FOR IRAQ CLEAR. HE HAS SET
FORTH WHAT IS AT STAKE, AND INVESTED THE DIPLOMATIC AND POLITICAL
EFFORT NEEDED TO EXHAUST ALL OPTIONS SHORT OF WAR. WE ARE AT THE
POINT AT WHICH THE RISK OF NOT ACTING IS TOO GREAT TO WAIT LONGER.
THE ANSWERS ARE CLEAR. IT IS ESSENTIAL TO WORLD PEACE AND OUR
SECURITY THAT WE ACT AGAINST THE REGIME OF SADDAM HUSSEIN.

13. AS YOU PREPARE -- KNOW THAT THIS WAR IS NECESSARY, IT IS JUST,
AND THAT YOU HAVE THE RESOURCES AND COMMITMENT YOU NEED TO ACHIEVE
VICTORY.

14. YOU HAVE THE STRONG SUPPORT OF YOUR COMMANDER IN CHIEF, THE
CONGRESS AND OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.

15. I THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO FOR OUR COUNTRY. I RECOGNIZE THE
SACRIFICES YOUR FAMILIES ARE MAKING, AND THANK THEM, TOO. MAY GOD
BLESS YOU, AND KEEP YOU, AND GUIDE YOU IN THE DAYS AHEAD.

AP was reporting US officials as saying massive air campaign was "imminent". Considering between 8 and 14 B-52 bombers took off from England earlier today, I expect it to start sometime between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Eastern time.

Just saw an interesting discussion of the French/US/British dynamic. Apparently Chirac and Blair got into a shouting match yesterday, and France seems to be hardening its stance on Iraq rather than softening it in light of the Scud missile discovery, etc.

The discussion about why France is acting the way it is turned to an interview of Saddam at the end of the first Gulf War, when Saddam said that he felt betrayed by the French and that if France ever went against Iraq again, he would make known to the world the many French ties to Iraq, potentially illegal or just more substantive than anyone has been led to believe.

Would make sense.

NEW YORK TIMES REPORTER DEXTER FILKINS, REPORTING FROM LIBERATED IRAQI VILLAGE: Iraqis shouting, crying and clapping for coalition forces, but are VERY fearful that Saddam's rule will return. So many soldiers surrendering that coalition forces have just taken their guns and told them to go home.

You know that the Communists did the same thing to deserting nationals during Chinese fighting during the 30's. I don't mean to imply we're communists, just thought the instances of good faith is cool, nice to see our soldiers have been trained very well. anyway, back to real news.
