For those not in the know, Kevin Joyce came to my Luton Town team as a product of our youth system at the beginning of the 2005-06 season. He was 15 year old at the time, thus not available to play in league play. I kept playing him in with our U18 and reserve squad, hoping nobody would notice him, since his contract could not be protected until he'd turn 17. He was eventually free transferred to (read "was stolen by") Sheffield United, then in the English Championship. You can click on the thumbnails below to see his current player profile and seasonal stats.

He's still with Sheffield United but they've moved on to the Premiership. First thing I saww when I looked at his profile is his new value, $3.4M No way I could afford that, at least not for now, and I doubt Sheffield would let him go below that...

Funny thing when I read daedalus's post and started up the game, I immediatly asked my scout for his opiniong on Joyce, here's what he came back with:

He is indeed a special specimen. I don't see amazing skills in there, other than obvious physical qualities, yet he is delivering the goods like crazy... oh well, I'll keep on sulking his departure from Luton

**special note**
I've been thinking about a way to show my starting lineups for my matches, without having to write down too much. I came up with the idea of using the "print to web" feature within FM2005. I will use it for the first time today. Players in light gray are the starters. The next group a bit darker is the subs and the last group is the non selected players that are members of the Senior squad, either because they're injured or simply not selected for the match. In the future, I may tick off the "show unavailable" box so that it would not show the injured players (too injured to play) but for now I'll leave them in there if only so you can see who could have been playing, had they been in shape. Gray shading isn't necessary though, as it's fairly easy to see who's doing what, only by looking at the "Pkd" column. I think it will give nice information like player's morale, recent form, season appearances, goals, and average rating. Remember that this picture is taken before I get to the match and, because of that, will always present the players' condition to be a good 4-5% lower than their gametime condition will be, as they will have rested a little more while getting to the game. Also note that the table you'll see below always starts from the right to the left. It's fairly obvious when you see DR and DL, but for the DC, MC, and FC, the first name is on the right, the next one to his left, etc. For example, in the match below, Lee Mansell is the right MC, and Iván Kaviedes is the right striker. Let me know what you think about it!

We play Bristol Rovers in the 3rd round of the League Cup, on their pitch. They are currently in 4th position in League Two, but they won in an impressive manner against Premiership side Southampton, 3-0, in the 2nd round of the League Cup. We definitely can't be overconfident.

Jamie Young gets the start at keeper for Chris Day, following Day's rating of 5 in our most recent match. Lee Mansell also gets one of his rare start, while Gino Padula will fill in at left winger. I'll reevaluate his condition at the half and see if he can keep on going or not. Mansell getting the start is mostly in order to give Nigel Quashie a breather, as our next match, league match this one, is only in three days, on the 25th. For the same reason, Steve Brooker will sit this one out completely.

We start with a roar as Iván Kaviedes takes the opening kickoff from Andrew Johnson and dribbles it to their penalty box, unchallenged. He passes the ball to Lee Mansell who scores, only 45 seconds into the match. Ben Watson curls one in from a distance, only 13 minutes later. That makes it 2-0 for us, we will never look back. Final score: 2-0

We pulled back at the half, after outshooting them 15 to 3 (9 to 1 on target) in the first half, the game ends with us ousthooting them 17 to 7 (10 to 2 on target). Possession was fairly even, but we kept pushing them back.

Iván Kaviedes earns Man of the Match honors with a rating of 8 and 5 key passes.

We recieve $52,000 for the win.

Following the match, I get the news that Mathew Sadler, who's been complaining about his playing time with the senior squad, is now content with his role. He has seen more playing time with the starting eleven, due to an injury to Gino Padula. Good to see him happy, and frankly, we'll need him happy, as the next news I learn isn't very good. I hear that Padula, who's only coming back from 2 weeks off due to injury, just strained his groin in training and will miss another two weeks. Darn!

The 4th round draw for the League Cup happens. Woah, won't be many easy match from now on. We draw Liverpool, on their pitch. Liverpool is currenlty 4th in the Premiership. The match will be played on November 5, 2008.

**Jamie Young is with us on a season long loan.

If you add all the players' wages, plus those you don't see (reserve only players and U18 squad) we come up to $179k in total wages. The Team Board has been griping to me that the wages are too high. Why? Cause they set the budget at $130k, heh

This is the one thing I found the toughest when you demote, your budget gets slashed and you have to either live with being over budget end hope to win (as we're doing now, how could they really complain at this point?) or make cuts and risk losing players that could be very useful if/when you promote back up. For us, the wage budget was at $150k when we were in the Championship, they slashed it to $120k for the start of the season and upped it to $130k after I sold a veteran. They are now restricting wages on any new contract, but the way I see it, there is only one veteran with whom it could cause some trouble: Martin Rowlands. While I like him, the possibility of getting 2.8M+ for him, while unloading a big wage, is a bit tempting. Especially if Matt Cross can hold his own and be our starting right winger right now, and for many seasons in the future. Other than Rowlands, there is not really one player I would see as unreplaceable. I'd like to keep Scott Donnelly, only because he'll probably come cheap, as for the other, I'm pretty sure I could find cheaper replacements...

I've not had many bidding wars on my players, to be honest. At least not in the last few seasons. The only time I've put players on the transfer list, it was because they really were not needed by our team, and I figure they were not needed by other teams, as I had to unload them at very low price only to get rid of them without buying back their contract (i.e. release them on a free). I did that for a player named Kevin Gallen that I don't think you've seen mention about in here. A 33yo striker with 1 for pace, even though he had decent skills overall, was not going to cut it for me. On top of it, he wanted me to increase his current $8,500 weekly wage to something like $22,000 or about, something crazy. When at QPR, his value was at $10k. I listed him with an asking price of $6k, only because I wanted somebody to take care of that 8.2k per week for a backup that wasn't gonna see the field anytime soon. I got three bids, two for $4k, one for $6k. I accepted all three and he signed with the $6k one... Go figure, he's now a starter at his new team, in the Championship and is now valued at 90k.

Because of the reasons why I tend to list players, I don'r reject many offers, as I'm often only happy to get rid of the guy. But I've had occasions, when at Luton, where I rejected an offer and upped the offer in the counter, to a value much higher, but to a point where the player had already been in the past (Kevin Nicholls is an example) and the other team had accepted my upped offer.

When I tried signing Ben Watson last season, before I offered him a contract straight up, I had long talks with Crystal Palace, where he was. They had listed him at 2M but when I offered them just that, they tried to play hardball with me and were asking 1.5M up front and another 2M over the next 18 months for a total of 3.5M!!! We went back and forth until the transfer deadline happened. They were still asking between 3.5 and 3.9M on every counteroffer... At the time, Watson was valued at an even 4M. As you can see, he is still valued at 2.2M, despite us being in League One and not in the Premiership...

We play Southend at home. They are currently in 10th place with 18 points, to our 1st place and 29 points. Martin Rowlands to give us a 1-0 lead. It took two consecutive corners and lots of pressure to score that one. He will eventually have to go off, injured, in the 42nd minute. Matt Cross takes his place then. We dominate them in the first half, not allowing them one shot on target, and only one shot overall.

In the 59th minute, Matt Cross gets injured and has to go off too! Marcus Bignot comes in at right wing. He's more of a fullback/wingback than an attacking winger, so I take off the up arrow on him. Only 5 minutes later, he fires a long cross, all accross the field to Lee Cook in the penalty box. Cook scores the 2-0 goal.

Marc Bircham will add a third goal to our lead thanks to a late penalty kick.

Final Score: 3-0

Lee Cook is the Man of the Match with a goal and 8 runs past opponents. We outshot them 12 to 1 (5 to none on target), not allowing them one shot in the second half. The 60% ball control we had is another sign of our dominance in this game.
We're keeping our cushion on top at 7 points, but there are 4 teams at 7 points behind us.

Martin Rowlands suffered some strained ankle ligaments and will miss 2 weeks, darn! One good news though is that Matt Cross comes out of this game okay and won't miss any time.

For the first time that I can remember, absolutely everybody on the senior squad has superb morale. There's usually a backup or two that is at something lower than superb, but now, they're all very happy

Seeing how we are getting injuries after injuries, I decide to place and avdert for a physio. I currently have only 2 physios on staff...

Lee Cook is named on the League One Team of the Week.

The FA Cup round 1 draw is announced. We will play Moor Green, an English Conference North side, at Loftus Road no less. I pity them, honestly...

The Team Board is now delighted with my managerial performance for the club. The fans are delighted as well, life is good

Lee Cook, our backup left winger of all things, is named the League One Player of the Month for October. In four appearances in October, he received form ratings of 9-7-7-8 while scoring a goal and assisting on two others. Fun to note that Jim Paterson, our usual starting left winger, won the same award in August.

17yo centreback Darren Evans comes in 2nd for Young Player of the Month. Evans, who's replacing Danny Shittu in the starting lineup, started the month with three 8 performance before "slowing" down and ending it with two more 7's...

I come in 3rd for Manager of the Month. Almost bummed about it

The three finalists for goal of the month are all QPR goals, that's one thing, but they're all FROM THE SAME GAME!!! The were all taken from our 7-2 drubbing of Oldham, when I told you that we were scoring from all kinds of ways. All three are bending shots. #1 is Steve Brooker's second goal of the game, while #2 and #3 are Nigel Quashie's two goals. Nice

If there's any interest, I could save the game and make it available. Let me know.

We play Watford at home. They're currenlty in 3rd, one of the 4 teams 7 points behind us. When we get to the game, they show a 3-5-2 formation that has the wingers very heavily involved with the defense (long down arrows).

Turns out to be a defensive battle. We are controlling the ball but we just can't fire anything to their goal. Shots are 4-2 (0-0 on target) for us at the half. They are indeed keeping a lot of people back.

Five minutes into the second half, they have 11 men in the box, damn that's hermetic! The half goes on and while we're getting chances, even hitting the crossbar in the 93rd minute, we can't convert and they "win" a draw. They definitely played not to lose.

We outshot them 13 to 3 (6 to 0 on target). I did put in my two strong strikers (Kaviedes and Brooker) together on the picth in the second half and the muscles paid off in scoring chances. Too bad we couldn't convert any.

As would be expected from a match like that, their keeper is named Man of the Match.

We're now 5 points ahead of the 2nd place teams.

He has all the skills I typically look for from my defenders. Very good positioning and anticipation and pretty good marking. The tackling is a bit low but, for a fullback, good enough for me. That combination of workrate and stamina is huge (is he listed as a "tireless defender" in the game?). Heading might be a bit low for upper-tier centreback but the huge jumping counters that and is more than sufficient for a fullback.

You can always keep an eye on him, his contract is bound to come loose soon and Sheffield probably won't stay in the premiership anyhow.

I don't remember how he's listed in the game but I think I remember that it was something unflattering like "unambitious" or something like that. Maybe you're right about his skills though. At least for now, looks like his mental and physical skills more than compensate for some lower technical qualities. I kind of find it hard to get excited about a guy who has 8's and 9's in most technical skills I look for in a defender (heading & tackling namely) and for a fullback (crossing & passing).

I will indeed always keep him on my shortlist, maybe I'll sign him on a Bosman in 6 years, when he'll turn 24

Time for the 4th round of the League Cup. We play Liverpool, on their pitch. They are currently 4th in the Premiership. This game is the most overmatched I've ever seen one of my teams be. The oddsmakers favor Liverpool heavily with odds of winning at 1-6, while our odds of winning are at 10-1.

My scout had reported that they played a 4-2-3-1, but this had not prepared me to the shock of seeing this formation on the field. Look at this:

I'll readily admit I don't have that much experience scouting professional football teams, but that formation kind of scared me a little...

They manhandle us early on and we're down 0-2 after only 24 minutes of play. I tweak our formation a little, but we're not doing much better, if only contain them a bit better during the second half, but it may also be becuse they pulled back a little.

Final score: 0-2

They outshot us 11 to 2 ( 7 to 2 on target) and they had the ball 57% of the time.

Following the nice award and all, Lee Cook pulls a stinker and is rated at 5 for his performance. I guess the whole team got a bit overwhelmed at first and we never recovered.

Ironically QPR and another well known team to me were the last two teams below the Championship still alive in the League Cup. The other team: Luton. They lost to Manchester City, also 0-2.

I can't help but say a big WOW at the gate receipts though! That crowd of 32029, sure did bring some nice money in our coffer. Look at this table of the Club incomes as of November 5, right after the Liverpool match:
ItemThis MonthLast MonthThis SeasonLast Season
Gate Receipts$1,094,484$746,015$4,984,042$11,048,865

Players Sold$0$5,998$145,995$2,734,884
Prize Money$0$53,400$128,160$35,600
Investments$0$0$0$0
Interest$2,684$11,292$78,740$337,509
Other$7,787$10,699$128,088$232,407

Overall$1,129,878$1,074,950$9,235,147$19,964,912

Again, wow!!! Over a million in gate receipts only 5 days into the month. I know we played at home on the 1st, but still this Cup match sure has brought in nice money. I am all surprised and everything mostly because this is the first very big match I have played in a Cup of any sort. I used to bow out pretty early in all seasons in the past...

Our next match is our FA Cup Round 1 match against Moor Green, in only 3 days.

For some reason that I can't explain, I saved a copy of the league table after our Liverpool match, even though we didn't play in the league. Anyway, while I have it, why not use it

We play Moor Green at home for the 1st round of the FA Cup. Kinda weird when I look at the odds for this match. As much as were the underdogs against Liverpool, we're clearcut favorites in this one. Odds for us to win are at 1-20, Moor Green's odds are at 30-1...

Kavi and Bircham are both out on international duty, both playing friendlies today. More importantly, they will also miss our league match on the 12th with world cup qualifying matches, meaning I'll have to try and keep a middie and a striker fresh for the 12th. That and the fact that Andrew Johnson is getting a bit tired of running around on the field. After seeing my scout's report qualifying Moor Green as a "mediocre" side, I decide to start many subs for this match. I basically tell Lee Mansell and Jamie Cureton that they'll play the whole 90 minutes, no matter what. You drop down, we plug you with an I.V. and put you back in I know Mansell should be able to handle it, but Cureton, I'm not so sure... Keeping him on the field should allow Andrew Johnson to rest for the whole match.

I'm also starting Nathan Jameson at right winger, trying to keep Matt Cross fresh for the league match.

Cureton is so happy to be playing, he scores our first goal in the 24th minute. It will only get worse for Moor Green from there. We win it 4-0 on a goal from Lee Mansell, top corner from 25 yards out in the 42nd minute, and a pair of goals from Steve Brooker, the second of which a screamer from 35 yards out in the 50th minute. From then on, we pulled back and closed the game.

Final Score: 4-0

We outshot them 14 to 1, 5 to none on target. Lee Cook is named Man of the Match with 3 assists. He recovered pretty well from his bad performance against Liverpool.
While Lee Mansell finished the game in reasonable condition, Jamie Cureton was drained. He finished the game at 46% in condition.

We get $24,000 for the win.

Millwall put in a bid for Matt Cross. They've been interested in him for over a month now and nothing prepared me for the crazy bid they put in. Matt is currently valued at $1.1M. He's young and hopefully will be at QPR for many seasons. They put in a bid for $0. I go: Whisky... Tango... Foxtrot!!! I reject the offer immediatly and then realize why they made that bid. Transfer status for Cross was set at "unlisted for transfer" but he had an asking price of $0!!! Good thing it wasn't set to "accept any offer over $0" Darn it, I'll go and check every players one by one...

The FA Cup round 2 draw happens. We will play AFC Bournemouth on their pitch on November 29. They are currently in 5th place so that should be a tight match. I also see that the match will be on TV. WOOHOO!!! Our first match on TV of the season

That's the personality part. There is a comment right above that listed as "Description" that describe players and their playing style. You'll see something like "Flamboyant winger", "Explosive striker", "Worldclass midfielder" or, if they are young and have a high enough talent and reputation, "Wonderkid". Using examples that I know of, Robert Pires, Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira and Jose Antonio Reyes, respectively. At least in the demo's data. Apparently, the game starts out with very few "Worldclass" classification.

Oh yeah, you're right! Just like Iván Kaviedes is a Flamboyant Striker and both Darren Ward and Danny Shittu are Experienced Centrebacks... It's also pretty useful when trying to determine where to play a D/DM kind of player. Reading something like "experienced fullback" kind of seals the deal.

I'll have to look for his description next time I load up the game...

Honestly, I can't comment. We're now in 2008 (in my career) but I couldn't even name you one member of the 2004-05 Liverpool side

I did know Diego and Gerrard though, and I think I saw Gerrard as part of Liverpool when they were on TV on a Saturday morning a couple of weeks ago

Matty and I are often watching the Premiership on Saturday mornings

Gerrard is their big gun, at the moment. Kirkland and Hyypia are both also on the squad. Kirkland is suppose to be one of the pretenders to England's number 1 jersey. Hyypia must be 90 or something by now in your game (heh, okies, probably 35 or so). Garcia and Josemi are new arrivals Liverpool this year. Don't remember for sure but I think Chevanton is one of their kiddies.

If I remember right, Diego is plying his trade for Porto at the moment. D'allesandro was a captain at River Plate at 20 (an insanely impressive feat, given their stature) before moving onto Germany fairly cheaply (for his talent level). Kuffour is a veteran centreback, currently playing in Germany. Benedict Vilakazi seems to be one of those superstar-in-the-making-to-get-on-the-cheap (the new Tonton!). Don't know much about him in real life. The leftback, I'm guessing, is Diego Placente. I think he plays in Germany as well but it's been awhile since I tinkered with the demo. (Man, did they ever raided Bundesliga.)

okay, the Gerrard part is about the only thing I knew about that team And you know what, this is the amazing thing about FM (and CM before that) it doesn't take anything away from my enjoyment of the game. I play with real names but it's about the same as playing with a fictional environment

hehe, sitting in the living room with kiddo playing in front of the TV, tune in to the local Fox Sports World affiliate (called CTV SportsNet) and they usually have the Premiership on Saturday mornings. In fact, today they had a triple header, kicking off with the Southampton vs Arsenal match, currently playing (since you mentionned them )...

oh, and you know a funny thing I saw while watching part or that Southampton/Arsenal match? At one point, there was a bit of a scuffle and Van Persie got sent off for a second yellow. Players were going a bit crazy and I see Thierry Henry with his arm around the neck/shoulders of a Southampton player. When that player turned around, I thought I had seen Quashie as being his name... Nigel Quashie, my current team captain???

A quick search on the net gave me his ESPNsoccernet player profile:
http://soccernet.espn.go.com/player?id=5362&cc=5901

He is indeed the same Quashie I know First thing they say in there is this:
Quote:
Quashie earned a reputation as a quality midfielder after beginning his career in London with Queens Park Rangers.

hehehe

Just found it funny, it's probably just me though

I also saw that he was sold in August 1998 by the Rangers. I guess I'll have to look how he got back to QPR in the game

Before I get to even think about tactics for our match against Wycombe, I see that their manager, Nigel Clough, went to the media, saying that we have to win to keep our hope for promotion alive. He went on to say that I should not expect any favors from his side as they expect to keep all the points for them and that he won't lose any sleep if it harms QPR's chances of bringing Championship football at Loftus Road.

hum, say what? Here he is, managing a relegation battler side, currently in 17th position, and he's trying to scare me?

Some players (Matthew Rose and Nigel Quashie) react to his comments and are determined to prove him wrong and help the team get promoted.

I reply that we will definitely get promoted. In the London's Evening Standard, it comes out as me being extremely positive about my team's chances and that I found it amusing that Clough believed the club could fall short of their ambition...

Enough talking, now on to the match...

As I said, we play Wycombe, on their pitch. They are currently in 17th position. Bircham and Kavi are still away on international duty, but that was known in advance. Martin Rowlands gets the start, his first in a while. I have also moved Jim Paterson and Gino Padula to the reserves squad in order for them to regain some sort of match fitness before I throw them in there. Their replacements, respectively Lee Cook and Mathew Sandler, have done really well in their absence.

The first half goes without a goal, and honestly, not many chances. We shot 4 times and they shot twice, but we're the only ones to register one on target, and that was just that, one shot.

I tweak our tactics a bit for the second half and while it pays off in scoreing chances, we can't convert.

Final score: 0-0.

I hate 0-0 draws. We got 12 shots total, 6 on target, which is a nice improvement in the second half. They finished with 3 shots, one on target. The Man of the Match award goes to their keeper for his second half work, mostly.

Ben Watson had a good game for us, getting a rating of 8 while connecting on 38 of his 46 passes, 5 of them key passes. We now have a 3 points lead atop the league table.

We play Stockport on their pitch. They are currently 20th in the league table.

The first goes scoreless despite both teams getting plenty of scoring chances. They outshot us in the half 10 to 8, but both teams had 2 on target.

Andrew Johnson scores his 5th of the season following a long goal kick from Chris Day that was just flicked on by Nigel Quashie. Steve Brooker will score twice in that second half, both goals coming before and after the sole Stockport goal. Johnson worked pretty hard to make that second goal of Brooker happen.

Final Score: 3-1

Darren Ward is named Man of the Match winning 12 of 17 headers, 5 of them key headers. We had 8 other players with ratings of 8.

They outshot us on overall shots, 17 to 14, but our shots were better quality shots, as we outshot them on target, 7 to 4. Possession was fairly even, with them winning it with 51%.

With that win, we increase our lead back to our 5 points cushion.

Andrew Johnson twisted his knee in the win and will miss a week.

To try and prevent training injuries, I have hired two more physios in Karl Nixon and Peter Cox, two pretty obscure physios, but with great skills in what they have to do. Hopefully, their hiring will help cut down the number of injuries.

We play Wrexham at home. They're currently in 23rd position.
As I start setting my starting eleven, I hear that Darren Ward hurt his heel in the morning trainins session. hrm, that's a curveball... He's only at 85% going heading to the stadium, I replace him with Matthew Rose but will keep him on the bench in case I need some defensive help later in the game. Rose is described as an experienced centre-back, despite me playing him mostly at right full-back...

Kavi is still away on international duty, playing for Ecuador in their World Cup Qualifier. Andrew Johnson is still Injured, which takes away two of my 4 regular options at striker, and Cureton is only a backup in my eyes. I go to my ace, Matt Cross to fill the hole.

Rowlands and Paterson are back on the wings.

That combination, from one wing to the other pays soon enough, as Jim Paterson crosses one all the way from the left to the right, leading to Martin Rowlands alone in the box. He scores in the 18th minute. Matt Cross scores our second goal on another play started by a Jim Paterson pass to Steve Brooker who centered it to Cross. Before the half was over, Steve Brooker scored his 10th goal of the season on a great center from, you guessed it, Jim Paterson. It's the Jim Paterson show, ladies and gentlemen!!!

The second half goes without much fanfare, as we pulled back a little. Still we outshot them so much that while we got 20 shots (9 on target, we don't allow them even one shot!!!

Final Score: 3-0

Jim Paterson gets the Man of the Match with a perfect 10 in one half of work. He had 2 assists, but clearly was part of our three goals. He also had 6 runs past opponents before being pulled out due to his lack of match fitnes (not bad huh?). We had 5 other players with ratings of 8.
Our lead atop the league table is still 5 points.

Mathew Sadler hurt his foot in the game and will miss a week.

Apparently, the game starts out with very few "Worldclass" classification.

I went and checked out Joyce's description and he's only described as a "defender", nothing more...

I was curious and went through each and everyone of my players see who's special and what not Here's what I found:

Ben Watson: cultured midfielder (he's 23yo, fwiw)
Chris Day: experienced goalkeeper
Danny Shittu: strong centre-back
Darren Ward: strong centre-back
Gino Padula: experienced full-back
Iván Kaviedes: experienced striker
Jamie Cureton: experienced striker
Marc Bricham: tenacious midfielder (with personality=driven)
Marcus Bignot: experienced full-back
Matt Cross: winger (simply winger, but personality=unsporting)
Matthew Rose: experienced centre-back...

Pretty interesting that both my starting centre-back (at least when Big Dan is healthy) are noted as being strong centre-backs. Must be intimidating for opposing strikers to venture in the middle of our defense

Kavi used to be a flamboyant strijer, I guess he's aged and matured, I liked flamboyant better though

Matt Cross's personality is interesting. Unsporting... I guess that's why he gets diving yellows every once in a while

We play Barnsley on their pitch. They are currently 8th. They play a diamondshaped 4-1-2-1-2 formation. Hopefully, our wings should have room.

Well, we do put some pressure, but the first half ends scoreless. We outshot them 7 to 4, 4 to 1 on target.

They score the lone goal of the game in the 53rd minute, following a Chris Day save of a free kick.

Final Score: 0-1

We outshot them 13 to 9, 8 to 4 on target but they came away with the 3 points... As is often the case when we lose, their keeper was named Man of the Match.

Our lead atop the table shrinks from 5 to 2 points. We will finally catch a break to let our players rest, as our next match is only in 8 days, on the 30th. We've had a pretty busy month of November so far, with matches on the 1st, 5th, 8th, 12th, 15th, 18th, and 22nd. That's 7 matches in 22 days for those of you scoring at home... We will play Bournemouth for our 2nd round FA Cup match on the 30th.

November 25, 2008
Millwall comes back with an offer for Matt Cross. They are offering $600k up front plus $44k after 10 league goals, and a player exchange of Wayne Andrews. Andrews is a crappy AM/F C that I would have no use for. I reject the offer, telling Millwal that Cross is a hot prospect for the future.

I offer to loan left/center defender Matthew Bates from Middlesbrough. We had him on a loan at the end of last season/start of this season. They rejected our renewal of loan at the beginning of the season. This time, I offer to pay $550 of Bates' weekly wage.

Middlesbrough accept the next day, now waiting to see if Bates will want to come.

Darren Evans sprained his wrist in training. He will mis a week.

We play AFC Bournemouth on their pitch. They are currently 3rd in League One, only 5 points behind us. This is a round 2 FA Cup match.

I hate myself for that game. Our only game on TV of the season and I don't even pay attention to either the pre or the post match TV analysis! ARRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!! oh well...

They just played on the 25th, while we last played on the 22nd. They lost in PK on the 25th in the quarter final of the LDV Vans Trophy cup.

Andrew Johnson is still too unfit to take part in this match. I even send him with the reserves so he can play a match or two before jumping in with the starting eleven. Matt Cross keeps in filling in for him.

Matt Cross gives us a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute with a strike from 30 yards out. The half ends and everything looks in control for us. We're outshooting them 9 to 6 so far, 5 to 1 on target.

I don't really know how, but it all unravelled pretty badly in the second half. We first let them do all they wanted in our penalty box, that was one goal, 1-1, on only their second shot on target of the game.

From there, Chris Day went from a rating of 7 at the half, to a 6 after their second goal (1-2) to a 5 at the end of the game, after he'd let a third goal in... They definitely kicked our butts in the second half.

Final Score: 1-3

In the end, they outshot us 15 to 14, although we beat them on target 8 to 5. With that, we're out of the FA Cup, I'm pretty pissed about it, even though my focus remains on winning the League, I felt like we should have won that one.

I'm so pissed at Day for sucking like that that I yank him for our next match, no matter who we'll be playing. Jamie Young will get the start...

Matthew Bates accepts to come on loan with us. The loan is good until the end of the season. His arrival will give us depth at the centre-back position, while he can also help on the left full-back position. When he was with us earlier this season, he played in 3 competitive matches, averaging a 7.33 form rating over that span.

While our lead was cut a little, we are stil sitting on top and very much in command of our own destiny.
Darren Ward comes in second for the League One Player of the Month award. He played in 6 matches in the month, but only 3 of them in league play. He received form ratings of 7, 8, and 9 in league play this month.

Darren Evans comes in second for the League One Young Player of the Month award. That's pretty good for a kid I was only hoping would not make too many mistakes in replacement of Danny "Big Dan" Shittu. He had 5 league appearances and pulled form ratings of 7, 7, 8, 8, and 8. Pretty nice.

While marveling over Evans' amazing 7.63 form rating over 8 league appearances since taking over for Shittu, I realize that the kid is only 17, so I go and take a look at when and how he got with the team. Darn! He got with the team through the youth system only in 2007, presumably in the offseason between the 2006-07 and the 2007-08 season, at age 16... HE'S A REGEN!!! Or so I'd think, anybody can confirm?

Anyway, the following thumbnails are his player profile and history/career stats page. He's already a pretty good player, I will have to make sure we keep him for a long time.

Another player that came to my mind at that moment is my other good kid, Matt Cross, who's averaging for ratings of 7.31 over 16 league appearances, at the age of 18. Matt is another product of QPR's youth system in the same offseason that produced saw Evans promote. So he was 17 when he got to the team, another REGEN!!! Woah, I don't know what's in the water at Loftus Road, but I'll have some of it

Below are thumbnails of his player profile and history/carrer stats page.

Can't wait to see what kind of youth pulls (sorry, HT habit ) we'll get once the game is fully patched

I was not even mentionned in the top 3 managers of the month. I was getting used to being part of the group. I guess we'll have to work harder...

We play Chesterfield at home. They are currently 24th, last in the league. They are described as relegation battlers and just about everybody on their roster is showing very poor morale. We need to win this one and bounce back to our winning ways.

As promised, Jamie Young starts in the nets. I hope not to regret this move later.

Kavi bends one from 30 yards out to give us a 1-0 lead in the 44th minute. They've played it very defensively so far. We've shot 8 times already, 4 times on target, while they've not shot once.

Interesting tidbit following Kavi's goal. Chesterfield is currently in a streak fo 25 games without a win. Losing today would make it 26 in a row.

Kinda weird to say that patience led us to our second goal, mostly because it happened before the first minute of the second half was even over. It was indeed one full minute of only QPR players touching the ball mostly on the left side, ending with a Mathew Sadler center that's headed in by Matt Cross. They had 9 players in the box, no matter we had to move the ball before we went for the kill...

Jim Paterson scored after picking up a deflected shot from Nigel Quashie. Up 3-0. And it was gonna get worse for Chesterfield, when Jim Paterson and Mathew Sadler teamed up on the left to control the playing field. Martin Rowlands (don't ask me what he was doing on the left) finally centered a perfect ball to Steve Brooker who converted it for the 4-0 goal.

Final Score: 4-0

We blanked 'em on all fronts as we didn't even allow them to try a shot toward the goal. We had 19 shots, 10 of them on target.

Jim Paterson is the Man of the Match with a perfect 10 rating. He had a goal and 7 runs past opponents.

Jamie Young ends the match with a 7, not bad. We had two players with 9's. Mathew Sadler was one of them, proving that our left side had a heck of a game. Five other players had ratings of 8...

As a result of the great game, we put four players on the League One Team of the Week: Mathew Sadler, Matt Cross, Jim Paterson, and Martin Rowlands.

Nice bounce back there, FM.
I'm finally caught up on the dynasty...I learned my lesson, don't avoid reading forums for an entire weekend again!!! By the by, I like the "print to web" format that you're using to show the lineups, very convenient.
Is having 2 regens on your team an odd occurrance?

Let's hope your next promotion run doesn't end as sadly as it did with the Hatters...

hahaha Good thing is I still have quite a bit of reporting to do, so it's a much better thing that you got caught up Monday at noon, as opposed as say Monday at 6pm

I also like using the "print to web" feature. Kind of too bad it doesn't work for in-game stats, would make even reporting about games even easier and would give even more depth to the experience I'd think...

The question should probably be "Is having 2 good regens on your team an odd occurance?"

There are plenty of regens on my team. In fact, how I think it is, any new youth player is a regen. You get new youth players in your U18 squad in the offseason, around mid-June or about. I received a bunch of them. In fact I reported about the Luton ones I had received in the other dynasty. But other than Kevin Joyce who had some sort of potential, all the other were not too impressive. So while I have plenty of regens on the team, they're pretty much all crappy players. These two kids, Cross and Evans, have great potential and are already worth 1.1M and 750k respectively... That's what striked me as almost weird, that with the known bug about regens not being very good, or lacking in technical and mental skills, these two seem to have pretty much everything they need where they need it to be effective on the pitch.

I'd simply hope for the team to promote this season, then be able to stick in the Championship and build from there. Simply not to demote after one season would be a great step forward. This team should be able to hang in there with Championship caliber teams. This is a more complete team than the Luton team I had when I promoted out of the playoffs and a 6th position...

Glad you enjoy the read

Some League One matches are played, but for some reason, we're not part of them. Possibly a Cup match for one of our opponents forced this one to be rescheduled.

Watford lost, so we now have a 2 points lead, with a game on hand. The table for the top 6 teams looks like this now:

Looking at the players whose contracts will run out at the end of this season, I remind myself that it may be time to shop Martin Rowlands around, since I think we could use the money from transferring him out and Matt Cross is clearly ready to take over the right wing spot.

I offer him around without transfer listing him. I'm asking for $2.4M while he is valued at $2.8M.

A shocker comes through the media wire: JOYCE TO QUIT SHEFF UTD!!! Wow, Kevin Joyce as apparently told the press that he feels the need to leave the club if he is to further his career. Woah, unambitious they say? I don't think so...

Crystal Palace are the only one to put in a bid for Martin Rowlands. They are only offering $1.55M though. I counter with a $2.2M offer...

We play Rushden at home. They are currently in 17th place.

As I look over my roster, something kinda weird catches my eyes: my loan players have a case of dropping morale!!! Look at Jamie Young and Matthew Bates. Both players had superb morale after our 4-0 win against Chesterfield. Now, one week later, while every other player has retained his superb morale, these two have dropped not only to "very good" or "good", but all the way to "okay", which is the midpoint... Weird...

Anyway, Chris Day is back in the nets. Hopefully this one game break will have helped him pull it all back together. With the wave of injuries finally receding, we have a couple of good players that are not only not starting, they're not even selected... Guys like Lee Cook now find themselves playing the reserves, waiting their turn to perform with the senior squad. Gino Padula will also be moved to the reserve squad. Lee Mansell is already there and playing pretty well by the way. He should be ready to take over, in case one of the three monster middie (Quashie, Watson, Bircham) would suffer an injury.

Rushden last played on the 9th, we only played on the 6th.

We get an early lead after Andrew Jonhson is pushed in their penalty box, PENALTY!!! Kavi puts it in for his 5th of the season. The Iván Kaviedes show continues and in the 43rd minute, he does it all. He dribbles some, holds up play a little and finally sets up Ben Watson with a perfect center. Watson scores from the edge of the box for the 2-0 goal. We are simply dominating them in this first half. Look at the possession chart, we're in white...

That's 64% possession...

They get one sent off on a second yellow in the 66th minute. That, combined to us pulling back to protect our lead means they will never even get close to our goal.

Final Score: 2-0

Even better, for the second game in a row, we've not allowed one shot, off target or on target, NOT ONE! We shot 16 times ourselves, 3 times on target.

Ben Watson is named Man of the Match. He scored once and completed 41 of 52 passes, 6 of them key passes.

Looking at some other players who did well on our team, my eyes go wide when I see the stats for Darren Evans and Mathew Sadler. Evans, who played the left centre-back position, completed 60 of 71 passes, while Sadler, who was the left full-back, completed 78 of 94 passes with 17 interceptions!!! I guess they exchanged many short ones between them two

Watford won their game, so we still only have 2 points on them, with still a game on hand.

I got a weird tidbit through the media grapevine the day following our last match. The news was titled "Bignot past his best" and had this in it:

Quote:
Bignot past his best
A press campaign is building up in England against Queens Park Rangers' Marcus Bignot based on the notion that he is too old to be playing football at this level"
That's it. Err, say that again?!? Bignot, now 34 and who has been transfer listed since the start of the season, has recently played at right full-back for us, and fairly well I would say. He's averaging 7.25 in form rating in league play so far. I'd say he's holding his own... Very weird that an anti-old footballers association is keeping old people from playing football if they want to...

Among other news, Crystal Palace withdraw their offer for Martin Rowlands. Millwall now appears interested. I offer him to them, now asking for $2.2M for him.

We play Colchester on their pitch. They're currently in 13th position. There's only 2 matches being played in League One today, so we're in fact playing the game we have on hand over Watford.

I start Matt Cross for Martin Rowlands, and I also give the start to Matthew Bates over Darren Evans. The morale of loaned players keeps on dropping...

Colchester plays a 4-3-3 formation, giving me flashbacks of my time at Luton Town...

The first half ends scoreless, despite both teams getting a good number of shots. We outshot them 9 to 7, but both teams are tied at 2 on target.

Bates is the only player with a rating of 6 at the half and he's completed only 10 of his 20 passes so far. I don't like that out of one of my centre-backs, so I pull him and put Darren Evans in the game.

In the 53rd minute, Mathew Sadler gets dispossessed of the ball and is get slightly injured in the process. While he lies on the ground, they score the go ahead goal. 13 minutes later, while we're putting a lot of pressure on their defensive line, they play the long counter attack and they catch our back 4 napping. Down 0-2! Darren Evans is rated at 5 for form, darn it!

We get one back in a weird succession of events. We are awarded a penalty in the 82nd minute. Steve Brooker takes it, but kicks it right to the keeper who blocks it. On the run for the loose ball that follows, Andrew Johnson is pushed and we get another penalty!!! This time, Martin Rowlands puts it in, but it's too little too late.

Final Score: 1-2

As it often happens when we lose, the Man of the Match is their goalkeeper with a perfect rating of 10.

Darren Evans finished the game as our only player with a rating of 6.

We fail to increase our lead atop the league table. We're still 2 points ahead of Watford.

Millwall offers a lowball offer for Rowlands. They are offering $1.3M. This is not very good. I counter with an offer of $1.3M now, and 900k over the next 12 months.

We play AFC Bournemouth on their pitch. They're currently in 5th place. I can still taste the bitterness of our defeat to their hands in round 2 of the FA Cup a few weeks ago...

This match makes it two in three days for us, but not for them... That being said, their starting keeper is injured and will not play.

The first half ends scoreless, but we are dominating the game. We're outshooting them 9 to 1, 3 to none on target. However, we're missing too many chances and that makes me nervous...

In the 62nd minute, Kavi launches a fabulous dipping/bending kind of shot from 20 yards out. Their keeper is mesmerized by it and we're up 1-0! We'll hold on and add one from Matt Cross, three minutes into injury time...

Final Score: 2-0

Now, this is what I like! We outshot them 12 to 6, 6 to 1 on target.

Nigel Quashie is named Man of the Match with a rating of 9. He completed 40 of 48 passes, 5 of them key passes. He also won 5 of 6 tackles. We had 6 other players with ratings of 8.

Matt Cross will miss one match, as he just picked up his 5th yellow of the season.

Watford also won, so we remain ahead by only 2 points.

Millwall withdraw their bid for Martin Rowlands. I decide to offer him around one more time, seeing how he's about to become eligible to be signed as a Bosman and I fear that people will jump on him. I may be wrong on that, bu I don't want to risk it... I'm asking $2.2M for him this time around. He's still valued at $2.8M.

Crystal Palace comes back with an offer valued at $1.95M. Well, we're getting somewhere. That's a better offer than the last time. I counter with an offer asking for $1.95M up front and 200k after he'll have scored 10 league goals...

We play MK Dons at home. They're currently in 8th place.

Matt Cross is banned for this match.

We're only 82 seconds into the match when Martin Rowlands curls a perfect center that meets with Kavi's head. The angle is perfect, we're up 1-0. Andrew Johnson will add another one 25 minutes later, on a pass from Jim Paterson.

The half, and the game will end on that 2-0 score.

Final Score: 2-0

We outshot them 18 to 5, 7 to 1 on target. I'd say we're back to our dominating ways Even better, they had only 2 shots (none on target) at the half, we pulled back in the second half.

Watford finally lose one and we gain 3 points on them. We now have a 5 points cushion on top. We don't have a game until January 7...

Crystal Palace replies to our counter-offer with a final, non negotiable offer. It will be $1.95M or it's not going to happen, at least not for now. I take it, half expecting a backlash from the fans... Rowlands is now allowed to negotiate a contract with Crystal Palace.

In the meantime, Darren Ward is named on the League One Team of the Week.

Rowlands agrees to a contract with Crystal Palace on December 31st. This tidbit shows up in the papers...

Quote:
Crystal Palace 'too good to turn down' says Rowlands
Followin his $1.95M move from Q.P.R. to Crystal Palace, Martin Rowlands has said that the opportunity to come to Selhurst Park was too good to turn down and that he was looking forward to the new challenge.

The ex-Rs attacking midfielder admitted that not every fan would understand his reasons for leaving but hoped they would still find it in their hearts to give him a round of applause next time he returns to Loftus Road.
Following the transfer, we now have $1,683,365 available as transfer budget. I guess some of the transfer was used to repay the Ben Watson move. I also see that the wage budget has been upped, as it happens sometimes after a transfer. We're now allowed $140k in wages, and with the departure of Rowlands, our wage total stands at $160,582. We're still above, but I'm gambling on us going back up to the Championship, thus getting an increase in the budget...

Now, I can only hope that 18yo Matt Cross is ready to shoulder the load at right winger on a full time basis...

This 160k in transfer budget will also have to be used intelligently, most probably on younger players, with possibly lower wages, but tons of potential...

The board is again delighted with my work as manager of the club. Even better news, the fans have not voiced any disagreement over my selling of Martin Rowlands, despite him being the Supporters' Player of the Year in 2007-08.

Incidentally, Matt Cross, Rowlands' replacement at right wing, wins the award for Young Player of the Month. He pulled ratings of 9, 6, 8, and 8 over the 4 leagues games in December, with 2 goals and 2 assists.

I win the Manager of the Month award after leading the team to 4 wins over the last 5 matches. Even better, while our loss was a 1-2 loss, all of our wins have been clean sheets. I find that impressive

Iván Kaviedes has 2 of the 3 goals nominated for Goal of the Month in League One. He has the #1 and #3 goals. The goal of the month is a neat bending shot in our 4-0 win over Chesterfield on December 6, while the #3 goal of last month is his crazy dipping/bending shot in our 2-0 win on December 20.

Among other news, I see that Danny Shittu is apparently 2 weeks away from resuming training. That's good news, although I must say that the two Darrens (Evans and Ward) have played solidly in his absence.

Well . . . if Joyce is ready to move on up, then it's time he comes to the Rs!

As you said, pretty much everybody new is going to be a regen. But you probably did get one of the very good regens in Evans and a good one in Cross (ie, regen'ed from very good players). I think Evans is going to be one heck of a centreback when he grows up.

hehe, I'm not so sure he'd see that as a move up though, ungrateful, unambitious bastage...

Evans is already a very good centre-back, or at least he plays well in the system I have. He'll most probably alternate with Shittu and Ward once Big Dan comes back from surgery. I can't wait to see if the patch will have any effect on these two, hopefully they could get some small boost from it and I'd be golden

About Watson, I have no clue. I thought culture went with age, I guess not

I get the news that Bristol C have made a $360k bid for Kevin Foley. I'm very tempted to put a very similar bid, now that I have some transfer money to play with, but I decide against it. His current salary, already at $8k/week for a 24yo is one thing, but the main thing is that, while he is still listed as a D/DM R, he is now decribed as a winger. I don't need a right winger, I need a right full back. And come to think of it, he was getting better form ratings when played as a wingback, as opposed to the times I played him as a straight full back. I also would hate to get him, pay reasonable to high wages for him, then play him at full back for half a season, only to see him get unhappy because he feels he's not being played in his strongest position.

I'm definitely scouring the transfer market though. I'll find a right full back at some point. I'm also thinking about saving some money to put in a bid for Matthew Bates once his loan is over. I like that kid and he could double as backup left full back and centre-back.

Marc Bircham is called up by Team Canada coach Frank Yallop to be part of his squad for the upcoming North American Gold Cup. This may throw a wrench in our midfield, meaning we may have to resort to using Lee Mansell and Nathan Jameson a bit more as inner middies with the starting eleven.

I also get this tidbit of news regarding the departure of Martin Rowlands to Crystal Palace:
Quote:
Fans understand Rowlands' decision to move
Fans of Q.P.R. are thought to be upset but sympathetic that Martin Rowlands felt the need to complete a move to Crystal Palace this week.

Twenty-nine year-old Rowlands was a firm favourite with the Q.P.R. faithful and several supporters have already said that they would welcome the attacking midfielder back with open arms should he ever decide to return.
I feel better about it now. I had the feeling the fans could start hating me for that move...

Among other news, we hear that Barnsley are among the clubs said to be chasing highly rated Q.P.R. youngster Darren Evans.

I decide to issue a "hands off" warning. Darren will too much of a star for us that I'm indeed not ready to let him go.

The next day, Evans can be quoted as saying he is happy at the club despite the transfer speculations. He is happy to remain at Loftus Road for the foreseeable future. Sure, for a 17yo, this "foreseeable future" may well be 6 to 9 months down the road, but I'm happy with his commitment to the team.

We play Hereford at home in what could be called the first match of the post-Rowlands era Matt Cross has been the starter before, when Rowlands was hurt, so it's not really uncharted territory. I feel confident about the team, will feel even better when I'll have spend some of that transfer money to build us some depth and maybe find a starter or two (two is a big stretch though).

Hereford is currently in 20th place.

This game is a story of domination and lucky breaks, all for us. It started with an own goal by one of their defenders in the 2nd minute and went our way for the rest of the game. Kavi scored on a penalty kick in the 60th minute, after Matt Cross got bodychecked in the box. Other scorers were Andrew Johnson twice (14', 82') and Marc Bircham on a hard long shot in the 65th minute. They scored a lucky goal in the 70th minute on a free kick that got deflected through our defensive wall.

Final Score: 5-1

We outshot them 16 to 4, 7 to 2 on target, and we controlled the ball 58% of the time.

Bircham is named Man of the Match with a perfect 10 game. He completed 49 of 52 passes, for a very good 94%, with 7 of them being key passes. Andrew Johnson had a 9 for form after scoring 2 goals. Every starter but Chris Day got rated at 8, with Day coming in at 7.

Watford also won, so our lead remains at 5 points.

Next up: my return to Kenilworth Road, where my Rangers will play the Hatters on January 10th.

PS: don't hold your breath though (not sure any of you would think about holding their breath, just saying in case there would be ), I won't play this one until maybe tonight. Was too late when I got to that point last night and I didn't want to rush through my comeback game

I learn that Kevin Foley has agreed to a contract with Bristol C. They got him for a transfer fee of $360k, which would not have been a problem to me, but they will be paying him $11,000 per week, which would have hurt us very, very much. Oh well...

It's my long awaited return to Kenilworth Road today, where my Rangers will play the Hatters. Luton is currently in a very good 7th place, wow. Weird thing though, they never signed a manager to take my place, could this be a bug???

While we played only three days ago, on the 7th, they last played 9 days ago, on the 1st. This is even more evident when you look at the condition some of my players are in. Granted, the 89% of Andrew Johnson will get to about 94% by gametime, but still, it's kind of low... This will be a hard one for us.

I think about putting Steve Brooker in for Iván Kaviedes, but Kavi's been hot lately, and I can't keep him out of a game at Kenilworth Road... I even think about playing Lee Mansell, but he played with the reserves two days ago and his condition is not better than any of my big three middies.

Danny Shittu is inching closer and closer to a return to the field.

We are evens favorite for this match.

Not much happens for most of the first half, but it's a very hard fought game. Possession is pretty even and both teams get about the same number of scoring chances. Lee Morris scores on a pass from Jacob Burns (what, he can be "not" injured sometimes!?!) in the 41st minute and 0-1 is the first half score. They outshot us 9 to 7, but both teams got 3 on target. Possession is an even 50-50 split.

We put much more pressure on them in the second half, despite us being much lower in condition than them. We finally tie the game up in the 87th minute on a Steve Brooker goal following a long pass from Matthew Bates on the left.

Final Score: 1-1

We clawed our way back to a draw. In a way I would have wanted to have the win so much, but I'm satisfied with the draw. Overall possession for the match comes to 53% in our favor, meaning we controlled the ball 56% of the second half, not bad. We also outshot them 13 to 11, 6 to 3 on target. This means we allowed them only 2 shots off target in the second half, pretty good. Jacob Burns is named Man of the Match with a rating of 9. I honestly tell ya, I don't think I've ever seen him match fit long enough to see good performances from him. It's a bit frustrating to see him perform well now that I'm out of the way...

Matthew Bates got a form rating of 8 for us, completing 46 of 54 passes. I'm liking him more and more and I'm thinking I'll definitely save some of my transfer budget to make a bid for him once his loan is over.

My head physio reports to me that Andrew Johnson and Darren Evans are both in need of a rest. For Darren Evans, I've got Danny Shittu coming back, and Mathew Sadler, coming off a minor injury, who should be able to play left full-back so Matthew Bates can play some centre-back too. For Andrew Johnson, who is my shifty striker, I don't have a replacement that I'm comfortable with, now that Matt Cross is the starting right winger. Sure I could play both Steve Brooker and Iván Kaviedes together, but their both too much on the same mold, strong, good header, but really pacey kind of strikers. Brooker (pace=9) isn't as bad as Kavi (pace=4) but still not what I'd want from a striker... With Jamie Cureton as my next backup at the striker position, this just popped on top of my shopping list: shifty striker.

The good news is we don't play for another 7 days. Next match on January 17.

Silly injuries! I hope those get better in your week off.

On a random side-note, did you ever figure out why the players you had on loan (I think that was their status) were having poor morale/morale drops?

Frankly, I've been very lucky with injuries lately *knock on wood*, but now that I've mentionned it, I'm sure I'll have an insane rash of bad injuries, like a bad case of terpkristinitis

The two INJ tags we can see on the Luton match are both oranges one, meaning they're within a week of coming back and both players are available to train. In fact, in my training schedules, I think I only have one player on the resting schedule because of injury. Shittu and Sadler are on it, but they could be training. I'm only holding them off... They should both be ready, if not match fit, for our next match. Sadler will most certainly play/start, while I may send Shittu with the reserves for a week or two, or use him as an off the bench player before I start him...

About the morales issue, I seriously have no clue. I'll probably ask the question in the General Discussion forum, hope Marc Vaughan has some dark side explanation about this I would think it could be because they are simply on loan and they don't feel part of the team. Kinda weird because it never striked me before...

I have taken things very, very slowly last night, especially in terms of advancing through days of playing . The date is January 10, I have some transfer budget I'd like to spend and some holes I'd like to fill. Among those holes, I feel that the two most glaring ones are right full back and striker. At right full back, I've been playing oldies Matthew Rose and Marcus Bignot. While they've been efficient, they are getting up there in age (Rose is 33, Bignot is 34) and their contracts are both up in June. I don't expect to sign them back, so signing a right full back is in order. With Andrew Johnson getting tired and all, and Kavi getting a bit old (31 now) and losing pace by the day (he's now at 4 in pace) I'll be looking for a striker, possibly one with a bit more pace...

All that shopping and the fact that I just installed the patch, led me to taking it easy on the "continue" button Speaking of the patch, I've taken a "picture" of my team on January 10 pre-patch, another picture post-patch, and a picture as of January 22. I'm in the process of doing some statistical analysis about who move and how, but I won't report on it immediately...

I'll try to date the actions as they took place...

January 11, 2009
I make an offer to a free agent D/DM RC named Jamie McUnnie. He's asking for $6800 per week, I offer him 5000 per week. This is more a fishing trip than a real solid offer, as I saw he's described as a winger, like Kevin Foley was, so...

Jim Paterson is named on the League One Team of the Week.

January 12, 2009
I often look at players who are formally transfer listed. There are bargains to be had in there sometimes, as often teams who want to get rid of a player they feel they don't need.

I feel I may have that kind of luck with a player named James Young, a right full back with some potential, currently with the Blackburn Reserves. They have listed him at 380k, but he's valued at over 1.5M. I offer to take him on loan for 3 months with a future fee at 360k. This means I could buy him during the loan for 360k, if I so would want to. They will reject this first offer and we'll start a dance of offers and rejections for a few days...

I also find a striker with some pretty neat skills, name is Jepp Lund Curth. He's from Denmark. He's 24yo and has all the good skills you require from a striker, while his main position is F C. I'd still play him as a striker anyway. He's valued at 170k and that is my first offer.

January 13, 2009
After Blackburn reject my second loan bid with a future fee for James Young, I decide to go conventional, that is a regular loan bid for three months. They accept to loan Young to us, we just have to wait to see if he accepts to come to us.

Jamie McUnnie accepts our offer, but I back out of the deal. In the last three days, I've found many more interesting players that I could sign to play right full back. Also, the "winger" mention kind of scared me away from him.

January 15, 2009
Our initial Curth bid is rejected, without a chance to negotiate. I offer them to buy him again, this time for 220k, or 50k more than the initial offer. (sorry, I forgot who he is playing for, it's not an English team though)

GREAT NEWS!!! Danny Shittu resumes full training after missing a little less than four months. WEEHEE!!!

While looking at the match report of the latest QPR U18 match, I see a potential star in the making. Right full back John Davies is showing some strong skills, some skills I don't think I've seen on him in the past. hmmm, could this be? Could the patch really be improving some of my youngsters???
To be continued...

I believe Curth is on Feyenoord (Dutch team).
